Thanks for writing. Indeed, never forgotten. Hopefully these videos play some tiny part in keeping his memory alive.
He the first guitarist to bring something very different to the rock guitar community since Hendrix. But even though the tapping technique was actually seen before by Steve Hackett and even Frank Zappa Eddie expanded on it and brought it out to the world and soon everyone wanted to sound like him. And now tapping has become a staple in guitar vocabulary, nearly every guitarist is doing it. He really sat down and made sacrifices to play on this level . But what a player he was!
Ed didn't use what he called hammer-ons as a trick . It becomes a part of his composing songs . He always tried to make a completely different song .
I was self taught but I watched the Eruption solo from LIVE WITHOUT A NET and helped me progress faster than any guitar books or a teacher!
Ed will miss you. Thank you for sharing your talents and heart for music.

You touched on something on Dave and Dave regarding Tonechaser that I’d given thought to as well. As fascinating as what Ed said off the record was, I can’t help but think we were hearing (reading) conversations we shouldn’t have heard.

Terrific documentary. Looking forward to all the other parts. VH were part of my childhood and got to see Eddie live at the CNE on the 1985 tour.
Thanks man, really glad to hear that. And I definitely envy you seeing them at that time - I'm from Ireland and the one and only time they played there was opening for Bon Jovi in 1995, and even that was before I was really into music. Really wish I could've seen peak VH live.

Been looking for a companion piece on Renoffs book, Van Halen Rising. There is talks of a movie, any involvement in that?

Thanks for the comments! Yeah this is sort of covering similar ground to Van Halen Rising, but more focused on Ed than the others of course. I'll also go further I hope, but these initial five parts are just covering the early years.
I heard the exciting news about the possibility of a film of course - the timing of that announcement and this series is entirely coincidental, and I don't think I'll have any involvement if it happens.
However, I do know the audio-visual material and interview sources as well as pretty much anyone (and can edit!), so they're welcome to get in touch if they read this 😁

Great little documentary series but one little point of criticism: the background music is mixed in too loud (louder than the narration) and therefore distracting. But thanks for making these!
Thanks for mentioning. I didn't think it was too loud personally (obviously!), but I'll keep it in mind. If you think it was an issue on the other episodes, then reply here and let me know.
@@iconsremembered yeah in the other episodes the background music is also a bit too loud compared to the narration in my opinion. But hey, if I'm the only one complaining, don't worry about it dude. You did a great job with the visuals, details etc.!
@@Tjoppy Thanks for the compliments! One other person mentioned the music on episode 4 I think, but that was more that they found it annoying, rather than the levels necessarily. I don't think it ever really overpowers the people speaking, but different opinions are available. I will keep it in mind if/when I do more and thanks for making your point in a decent way, rather than just saying it sucked 👍🏻

Say that EVH didn't invent tapping all you want... the bottom line is absolutely NO ONE was talking about it or it wasnt even on anyones radar until Eruption hit the scene.
Any rock guitar player from '78 on took something from EVH. If they deny it, they're either lying or dumb. That dude was in a league of his own until the day he died. No tribute show? Thank God for that formal interview.
He definitely influenced a lot of people, but no one really could sound like him fully. It's a terrible shame about the tribute show, but this is unfortunately the reality of VH - from about 1981 onwards, there was always dysfunction and probably always will be. But yes, if you mean the Smithsonian interview, then that truly was a gift in terms of getting to know EVH a bit better.

Did you get a cease and desist? There are more videos you must have produced. This is a fantastic doc series. But I fear you can’t post them because most likely Ed’s estate, most likely Al, doesn’t like anything that would put Ed in a negative light. I hope it’s not the case but I fear it is, happened with the 1984 doc. I’m really sorry. 😢❤️

Seriously, thanks for the kind words. I understand the point you're making, but a big difference between this and the 1984 doc (at least when that was in its original form) was that the VH music was included in that, whereas mine basically doesn't use it at all. While I am 'borrowing' from numerous sources for audio and photos etc, I don't think I'm taking anything that belongs to Van Halen the band.
Also, I wouldn't say I'm in any way portraying Ed in a negative light. Aside from mentioning him starting to drink at age 12, I think everything in these early episodes (including the fifth one, which comes out in a couple of days) is overwhelmingly positive.

Is there any proof that Edward could actually play classical piano and not just beginner kid pieces? There is no proof in his known playing as that's easy to figure out. To quit playing classical piano by 12...I've researched newspapers from Pasadena or winners of piano competitions, and there is nothing to say he won anything. Ed was a notorious liar and had created an exaggerated persona that many take as fact or never look to closely at. He had multiple stories for how he started drinking-dog went through the front screen and bit him so his dad gave him a drink for the pain and then there was his nerves before a show and his dad gave him alcohol. Two completely different stories, which neither being true. His tapping technique stories seem to be contradictory to others stories about it. I appreciate the work involved to do these videos but truth seems to be that Edward didnt even know Edward.
It's true that Ed did say a couple of contradictory things over the years. But that's also sort of normal sometimes for people in the public eye.
The piano competitions weren't just Pasadena - they were something called the Southern California Youth Festival. That information comes straight from an unheard interview with Alex Van Halen (some of which I've used in Part 3).
Edit - Alex definitely calls it the "Southern California Youth Festival", but Greg Renoff says it was the "Southwestern Youth Festival" that Ed competed in and won, which I think might be right, as that shows up more in searches.
Ed has won awards in those piano competitions . It's on record .
