Oral cancer survivor here. Had it worse than Eddie as I had most of lower jaw replaced. Its beatable ... but you gotta clean up your act and be vigilant about your health. I'm one year cancer free.
I think people thought that it was Eddie doing those high harmonies. Michael's vocals were icing on the cake. They were one of the things that made VH sound like no other rock band.
...and to think that he wasn't paid adequately 😢. Van Helen's bros said that he didn't contribute anything to their songs & music. So, he was paid like session/hired bassist and not as one of the band's members...
Let's cut the BS as far as Michael being disrespected by the Van Halen brothers. Alex's net worth from the band is: 70 million. Michael's? 60 million. What are you kidding me???
I love the fact that when you listen to Eddie when he plays, it feels like he is alive at that moment. I am dead serious. Eddie lives on in his records.
Eddie is the reason I had to have a guitar . Heard that first album and was blown away . The date of Nov 2nd 1979 is when I started learning to play. Trying hard to play catch up to" Eddie ". which was impossible . Seen Van Halen on July 28 1981 in concert . Magical !!... I was wowwed to find out his birthday was one day before mine . In March of 2020 my thumb had turned black and they had to amputate it .For a guitar player it was devastating .My thumb was removed because it was cancer . The cancer " Melanoma " went to my brain and was diagnosed as stage 4 melanoma . When Eddie passed away in October . My heart sunk , Battling cancer myself I leaned into his vibe .I am still alive and even though I lost a thumb , I still play and when I play . I look up and think " You can see me playing now buddy .. How am I doing and hope to see you soon " Eddie was my guitarist and inspiration
🎸As one of Eddie Van Halen's biggest fans, I can't help but feel so sad about all of the health issues that he went through. I have never plugged this video online before, but I will now because I know it will help many people with their own personal health issues. Please search for "The Human Mold August 6, 2013" video on Google. I have had a project called the Neighborhood All-Stars for over twenty years in honor and in memory of Wayne Newton's late music teacher nicknamed Kimo. This project gives recognition to people doing positive things in the community and author Jose Antonio Jarimba from Portugal was my Neighborhood All-Star back then. Even though this is a video from over ten years ago, all of the things that Mr. Jarimba says about health related issues are still relevant today in 2024 and he is still helping people to heal successfully. In this TH-cam video, I introduce Mr. Jarimba and I close his speech and as you will see, I was just so proud to have him as my Neighborhood All-Star because he has helped so many people with their health issues including my own mother! Thank you for reading this comment. God bless you and your entire family. Long Live Eddie Van Halen!!! ❤ Sincerely, wishing all of you great health, Aleth Jimenez (Sponsor of the Neighborhood All-Stars) P.S. If you would like to nominate a future Neighborhood All-Star, this is my phone number: (956)278-9145 Please leave a voice message with your name and phone number and I will gladly return your call. ☎️

Aw, he was second or third to the likes of Roy Clark's "Magulena"(spelling???). Type in Odd Couple, Roy Clark episode and get back to me. Oh my Eddie could rip a fret with his fingers, all in one place.... Roy's hand was moving so fast across ALL the frets, I couldn't FOLLOW it with the naked eye.
NEWSFLASH: Mike was the one who walked away from Van Halen not the other way around . Eddie and Alex made it clear either you are with us or you're with Sammy and Mike thought long and hard and decided to move on and chose Hagar. Only after Mike jumped ship did Alex and Eddie not treat him well , can't blame the VH brothers at all .
Mike's contribution to Van Halen was dismissed early on. Dave and Eddie both had it in for him. Reasoning from both centered on his lack of song-writing contribution. Nepotism LOOMS LARGE on that one. Alex also had nothing to contribute based in what Ed and Dave deemed as "writing" but Eddie had his brother's back. Leaving only Mike to suffer the slings and arrows. Hind-sight being 20/20 you might have expected Dave to be a little more supportive. We got to hear Dave when Mike was no longer there on that last re-union tour. It wasn't pretty. Ending the debate once and for all about how richly Mike deserved a full 1/4 of the band's "take". Mike wouldn't know loyalty until Sam stuck up for him and refused to come back without him in 2004. Anyone describing Wolfgang, as a replacement of Mike or holding him in contempt for him over it should really re-think that one. Wolfgang stepped into an open position. Mike was playing with the only person in Van Halen who'd always recognized his contribution. Given the CRAP deal he'd have no doubt been offered to play with Ed, Alex and Dave I really wonder if a deal could have been struck anyway that would see him leave Sam anyway. Mean-while Dave got a reality check on Mike's importance. One part in the backing vocal that was no longer there to prop him up and another a harsh reminder that life in Van Halen first time around meant he wasn't the only outsider. Dave made $$$ on that last tour but I bet there were plenty of times he must have wondered if life inside a 4 piece band with 3 family members who see you as the outsider was worth it.
@@herbcanter2114 you can blame them for screwing Mike out of a portion of his publishing.sammy talked about that in an interview. Eddie was a brilliant musician but he seemed like kind of a dick in a lot of ways.
I'm so lucky. I was there. I saw Van Halen open for Sabbath in Virginia in '78. Went out the next day and bought their album. Instantly they were my favorite band in the world. Their sophomore effort "Van Halen II" was the most anticipated album I've ever waited for in my life. The rest is history. RIP, Eddie!
Great Story👍 Seems like most of the comments are from IDIOTS who never got to witness the VH magic live & in person, I’m not one of them. Eddie was a GOD in the 80’s , these fools have noooooo idea what they missed! Long Live The Mighty VH. Thanks for the story. ROCK ON 🔥
Same, saw Van Halen open for Black Sabbath in 78 at the Spectrum in Philly then a year later they headlined at the same place, fn awesome both times nothing like it at the time.Unitl I saw Randy Rhoads with Ozzy, also fn awesome.
Saw that same tour in Chicago, at the International Ampitheatre. Eddie was doing summersaults, jumping from the speakers and just playing so fast and good!!! I remember thinking "these guys are so good, they deserve to be popular and famous!"
michael anthony was a quintessential part of van halen.......roth didnt have the range which is why they played in e flat instead of e standard and michael anthonys vocals saved the day........plus, he could have been a flashier player like a geddy lee but he played it and layed it down simple to give eddie the space to be the lead guitarist......totally unselfish bandmate......Gos bless Michael anthony.....saw VH at monsters of rock in august 88 and loved seeing the jack daniels bass up close and personal.......great band
Love Eddie but just can’t believe what they all did to Mike. I met Mike he’s the nicest guy . He’s a founding member and somehow holds no grudges. Glad I was there to see the rise of this great band.
Every time I think about him, see a video, hear one of his songs I am not only saddened deeply it also reminds me why I should never smoke again or drink for that matter. I've been sober since my cancer in 2019 just a few short months before his passing. I can no longer play guitar like I used to because of chemo & what it's done to my finger movement. RIP EVH & F CANCER
I did a couple of Videos about the reunion / Tribute Tour. Now Sam & Mike are doing one BUT Roth won't be a part of it. or wolf, Not sure if you know what happened, BUT it's irritating how things turned out
I met Eddie when I was living in a Sober living in 1991 in Burbank . He was in rehab on the third floor at Saint Joes Medical Center. When he took his 90 day chip at an NA meeting, I gave him a book called as Bill sees it.He gave me a big hug. After he got out of rehab, I saw him around at AA meetings. He sure remembered me. We smoked a few cigarettes a few times out in the back by ourselves. I guess it was my 15 minutes. I think he already had an operation for his tongue cancer. He told me that Valerie left him because he wouldn’t quit smoking anyway I gave him my number and told him if he wanted to go to a meeting with somebody just give me a call. The call never came. Meeting him was a highlight of my life. I’m just a garage musician, but I’ve always looked up to that man’s Musical gifts. I wish I could’ve helped him. I didn’t get sober until 2000’s ITS REALLY SIMPLE !!! How NOT EASY !!
AA has monopolized recovery, with the help from judges and courts. AA Does nothing to treat past trauma that caused the addiction, AA is all about time, how long your sober, and if u break down and have ONE bad day, you lose all your time and your shunned by the "fellowship", wich is a quasi Christian religion. So even If you went from drinking a liter of vodka daily, than stop drinking for 90 days and have a bad day , your still doing amazing. Being drunk once in 90 days is a amazing improvement from being drunk every day for 90 days .... I believe smart program should be used more, especially if you believe in science about addiction, and how childhood trauma is the catalyst to addiction and also adhd. AA is good 👍, but some ppl do commit su***de, after they have one relapse, one bad is OK!! Especially if you don't drink the next day and stay sober again for significant time. It's ok , we all have a bad day occasionally
Anytime you ingest ANYTHING for decades and abruptly stop ingesting it you’re body will rebel. Look at smokers/drinkers/whatever and you will see consistent illnesses of the same type. The only thing that’s 100% is death no matter how we live.
Denial isn't a river in Egypt--Eddie would have to admit he should have stopped smoling and lots of super talented and famous musicians have a big problem admitting they might be wrong about something (Prince, Michael Jackson come to mind) in other fields because they are great musicians
Eddie almost got it right. It was most likely the metal picks that gave him oral cancer, but not because of the electro-magnetic radiation they might have picked up. It was because those picks were made out of beryllium-copper, a very toxic metal know to be cancer causing. I used these picks for years because they had a great feel and if you put them in your mouth (as Eddie did) a green oxide would form that made the pick easier to hold. Unfortunately, doing that also released a toxic carcinogen into your mouth. I finally quit using them when I heard about Eddie's oral cancer, but I still have a few lying around as momentos. The picks were marketed under the name "Hot Licks" IIRC but I don't know if you can get them anymore because of the danger associated with them.
I still pinch myself in disbelief that Eddie Van Halen is gone still. A lot of people does not know it, but Gene Simmons was the one who found the band, and helped them get a record contract.
As the husband of an amazing Oncology nurse for 33 years (which eventually succumbed to a brain tumor at only 54 herself)...and seeing and hearing all the stories... I applaud your tenacity, and perseverance. It's not an easy thing to go through. God bless you on you journey into the future... and may you STAY cancer free forever!
Every Time I see Eddie Van Halen's picture or video tears come to my eyes. Every time I listen to Van Halen, my memories go back To one of the greatest guitars In the world. And Van Halen music. We All miss you EVH.
Same here. I was lucky enough to crash a VH backyard party with my friends. We met these guys at a party in 1981 @ Belmont CA. They were THE cutting-edge Rock band in CALI with sounds and stage moves back then. Cool memories.
Each time I see Eddie Van Halen I think about how they ripped off their founding member Michael Anthony. That`s nothing less than pure greed. Totally unforgivable. What a terrible thing to do to your "friend."
I think Van Halen had big problems with alcohol & other substances possible ESPECIALLY Eddie but other bands did too. Particularly OZZY .....Ozzy Osbourne. I think in the 1970s after the counter culture failed revolution of the 60s Rock 'n Roll was seen as a LIFESTYLE as well as a type of music & the pressures of being on the road & the things which were offered to musicians was an irresistible temptation to them. Ozzy had to leave Sabbath in 1979 because he was so far gone on coke & booze that the band couldn't function & Tony,Geezer & Bill had to make a painful decision to move on without him. Ozzy of course claimed that ALL the band were caught in the trap. He said - 'When we started cutting the early Sabbath stuff & touring we were a ROCK band doing drugs....But by the time we were cutting Vol 4 in America we had become a DRUGS band doing Rock' 😕...I think different individuals handle things like alcohol & drugs differently depending on their individual personalities. For instance Geezer got clear & free from it much earlier and easier than Ozzie or Bill did. & it was the same with Eddie & Alex.....In the 1980s Alex was CRAZY doing it. But when Jan their Father passed away from alcohol complications Alex just walked away from it. But poor Edward kept getting stuck in it. Particularly after he heard he had that damn cancer. 🙁😔
I was a smoker I quit due to cancer in my family. My stepfather died from it. My mom died of a heart attack and smoked and I used to drink like crazy but I slow
@@wolkengeist4067 Cant blame them for selling it, EVERYONE KNOWS it’s bad for you, still the government makes billions from the taxes on it! We have to blame ourselves for getting addicted when we knew about it the whole time, just like alcohol, and narcotics, how many generations need to die earlier? Yeah, everyone dies, but I would not prefer to die of cancer; It’s horrible! On the other hand, my ex is dealing with brain cancer, and never smoked, drank, or took any drugs in her life! Yeah, there were times I really hated her, but that is all in the past, and I wouldn’t wish this on anybody!
How do you stab somebody in the back that's been there for 32 years? You don't care about them to begin with, that's how. I find the treatment of Michael the last straw for my love for Van Halen. I don't care that Eddie died. Shrug, and I won't care when Alex goes either.
Indeed. Eddie & Alex were close, naturally, there brothers. I think they didn't trust the others Dave, Sammy, Michael for a couple of natural reasons, brothers being a natural small part of it but for the one big reason, that made them act and take on this suspicious, mistrustful demeanor, that eventually graduated into a corporate greed like, heartless nasty deposition. I believe it was partly because of the way they were raised up, poor to start, people were prejudice, racist & discriminated against the Van Halen Family. So they move to America, the boys not able to speak English yet, suffered more discrimination, racism, prejudices etc... from their school mates. So, with no friends to be had or hangout with, the Van Halen boys had to lookout for each other and stay close not trusting anybody, especially kids their age, growing up during their youth. It probably traumatized them a trifle. Thus developing a blood is thicker than water demeanor between the two of them. Again, slowly developing that corporate greed like nasty deposition. It's just my theory of course.
Van Halen was the first band I saw in concert. They opened for the original Black Sabbath. Can't top that for a first concert!! Everyone was mesmerized by Eddie Van Halen on guitar!! When Sabbath came on stage the crowd started screaming "Halen Halen Halen!" It was a great concert and a great night. RIP Eddie Van Halen ❤
Dave is definitely an artist --- maybe he couldn't play guitar, but he was VERY artistic with his lyrics, his fashion, and his stagecraft --- his flying spin kicks were like poetry in motion
Understood but there are plenty of Showman-Musician combos that work great with no conflict. The problem is that Diamond Dave tends to be an A-hole and doesn't know how to play nice for too long. Ask Sammy Hagar.
@@chris7brook now days some people just can't seem to get the hole meaning of that ....help ya fellow man ....say something when it needs to be said no matter if you know them or not.....👍👍👍👍
Wow, I didn’t know how bad they treated Michael Anthony. This is so sad. He’s such a major part of Van Halen’s sound. It kind of overshadows everything else, now, and makes me not feel bad for the Van Halen brothers or David Lee Roth. Sammy Hagar is a hero for defending Michael Anthony. Good for him! 👍🏼
Eddie was full of crap about it too. Many of us have played in enough bands that we know how the chemistry generally goes - one or two people do most of the writing of the songs, the others make up their parts to go with it but otherwise don't contribute - AND THEREFORE STAY OUT OF THE WAY. That's EXACTLY what the ego's of the songwriter's want - let them have their way, their vision, they love when the band stays out of their way....Eddie got what he wanted and still complained.
I met all the guys from VanHalen (specifically Eddy and Dave) back in the 1970s before anyone knew them when they played at a local ballroom my girlfriend worked at on Thursday nights. We all used to hang out in the green room together. Some years later I had quit smoking and told Eddy one time talking to him that he should stop too. He didn't sadly. He loved smoking and drinking. Sad what happened to him later on, but he finally pulled out of it because of his son. That was the only thing that changed his life, but it was too late, the damage was done. We lost a great man way too early. Too many die from Drugs and alcohol. Several great losses in my lifetime. Hopefully, I won't see them for many years to come, but we will all be reunited someday. God bless them all. They gave so much to all of us here!
Eddie and Alex were on my Boyfriend Steve’s baseball team in late 70’s. I was the Official Scorer. Our teams name was L.S.D. The Long , Strong Devastators. We all grew up in Pasadena. Fun times. Party at Steve and Karen’s.
A very balanced doco. As a head and neck cancer surgeon, I've never seen tongue cancer caused by anything other than smoking, alcohol, recurrent trauma (chemical or physical), or betel nut juice. Eddie's lung cancer was a second primary, not a metastasis from his tongue. There's no way that was caused by a metal guitar pick!
I went to visit Eddie when he was just diagnosed he told me it was from holding the pick in his mouth. Pre 2017 he looked great he cruised in a blue classic convertible sports car. He always smiled and waved then he just disappeared from public. Sadly I didn't know how bad it was. I avoided the internet and media didn't carry his story. I played with him in his garage while he was in high-school and building the original Frankenstein. During the DLR era he invited me to play with them. RIP buddy.
The saddest part being that he essentially contributed towards his own death. But no matter how much of a fan that I am, he and his brother showed some disgraceful behaviour towards others for quite a long time, so damaged their reputations a long time before Eddies demise. Wolfgang, on the other hand, shows how mature he is and is a credit to his dad.
I'm not sure I would call him mature. I would call him feminine. he was mostly raised by his mother and his personality and attitudes sound just like her.
I think their addictions fucked-up their personalities. But they didn't invent smoking and drinking. Eddie's son is an amazing talent himself. But I'm serious when I say that he's gotten so fat that he can barely see his guitar and barely reach it. Food addiction? I can imagine what that must be like.
I'm 61 and every time one of my fav's passes it hits me hard like a sledge hammer. It's like I'm coming to grips with my own mortality. All these greats and their music was a big part of my life's story. It really does hurt.
I understand totally. I am 72 years old and every time one of my rockers passes away, I cry like a baby. I have loved music since I was a little girl, and it plays a large part of my life. I was always in my bedroom listening and singing my heart out with the great groups for all my life. I lived during the greatest time for music. I am grateful for it all. Luckily I went to a lot of concerts. I never dreamed I would get to experience such a wonderful time.
Eddie Van Halen interview 1986 word for word.."Without Michael Anthony there is NO Van Halen." And then they had the audacity to cut him out of the royalties?????????????????? It was Michael Anthony's backing vocals that bailed out DLR's cliche ad lib glib singing and lyrics. If I was Mikey I would've walked and said "Good luck replacing me." Wolfie sure couldn't.
I firmly believe that THEY were simply following Eddie's lead on getting Wolfie in there, because that period of time was very short and out of the blue... I believe that Eddie was told he had the terminal cancer and his time was limited (which at the time was not shared with the others)... and I have no doubt that Eddie had always wanted to get Wolfie out there on stage with him at some point and so he had to make a move.... The excuses used for boot'n Michael never did add up or make sense... Eddie should have probably just laid it out there for Michael instead of making shit up and shit'n on him... In retrospect, and being the good man Michael IS, he does understand and does wish it would have been handled different, but understands and that's that.
WOW. I just lost allot of respect for these guys doing Michael like that! The bass player always gets shit on. Well unless you're Geddy Lee or Les Claypool. Not all but most bass players got the shaft in the world of Rock n Roll. But Michael was the MUCH bigger man in the end and I'm sure the other guys learned as they aged and grew a little wiser over time.... Hopefully. But I still lost ALLOT of respect for them. That was nothing short of Total BULLSHIT!!!
I’ll never be a snobby critical non-smoker. Quitting smoking, for me, was the HARDEST thing to quit. I quit two years and started again. It took three more miserable years of trying again, until I finally quit in December of 2003. Even today sometimes the only thing that keeps me from picking up again, is IM NOT QUITTING AGAIN! I’ll never criticize Eddie for not being able to stop. It’s really really hard for some of us, no matter how obvious the quitting should be . Rock in Peace Eddie 🎸
The problem is the excuse making. Addiction is hard to quit. However if you do want to quit you have to be able to at least admit to yourself that you do have an addiction. My parents went through this in the early 90s. My dad at that point was smoking two packs a day, my mom not so much. They enrolled in a stop smoking program. When the time came to stop smoking my dad was able to. My mom had much more trouble. She tried but would backslide. The difference between the two seems my dad knew it was an addiction but my mom never really faced it. My dad had other health problems and my mom would say that he didn’t have them before he stopped smoking (he did). My mom finally gave it up but chewed nicotine gum for the rest of her life.
I was one of the lucky people to see the OG lineup on their 1984 tour. Honestly, one of the best shows ever. The things Eddie was able to do with his guitar was to the point of insane. I personally would have to list him as the BEST guitarist ever and even though he's no longer with us nobody will ever take the #1 spot from him and growing up in the heavy metal/ hair band days I've been fortunate to see some of the greats. Rest in peace Eddie
I’ve been a Van Halen fan and particularly an EVH since high school in the early 80’s. When someone lives a life of nonstop partying and uses alcohol and drugs along with smoking 3 or 4 packs of cigarettes/day for 40 years and then says the cancer was because of a pick between his teeth, that’s pretty delusional as sad as it is to say
That was just his lie to himself/others for being too weak to stop. He probably didnt believe it himself. Or if he was so fucked up with all stuff taken yea maybe he got superstitious.
That's not delusional, because it wasn't in his lungs but on his tongue at the time... To Eddie, it made perfect sense... and he used several different type metal picks through the years, silver, stainless steel, copper, nickel, etc...... and I cannot imagine playing with a pick in my teeth without fcking with it with my tongue while it's there... and I have known way more people and seen way more people in my life who had cancer pop up and they had supposedly Gotten it all, only for it to come back within a few years with a vengeance and it kills them.... and several of those people had never smoked ANYTHING or even drank at all... My Grandma smoked from being an early teens until she was 92 years old and passed at 104... without a speck of cancer anywhere... then again she wasn't holding metal guitar picks in her teeth and chuggin Jack Daniels either.. Mom caught Dad smoking after they told him his cancer was inoperable and was mad at him and came to me about it.... I already knew that he kept sneakin smokes... I told her what he told ME when I mentioned it to him..... He said." They can't fix it.... so what difference will it make NOW? I'm not going to make myself miserable trying to quit a 67 year old habit that I enjoy while I'm dying... FCK that!".... so it doesn't get any more real than that....
Russian roulette seems like a good game for you since you have cyborg genetics. I can’t speak intelligently about guitar playing but I definitely can about the reality of disease process. Chronic Inflammation is the underlying cause of basically every major disease. If you think that because Eddie’s cancer expressed itself in his mouth and wasn’t spread throughout the rest of his body you don’t have a clue. Unfortunately The vaxxx bio weapon that Eddy took put the finishing touches on him. Maybe you’ve been double vaxxxxed and boosted and can’t think straight.
Addictions are so strong that you just make excuses. I dont think really believe themselves things like this but addiction has control over their sensible mind. Im sorry, sounds bad for your still living brother. May the force be with you.@imfree62
Sammy seems like a pure good business guy, and just a good guy period. Ha, I wrote this at the beginning and then I see Sammy taking up for Mike. Told ya, Hès a great Guy!
@Sjwolosz321 I feel you here my friend.. I'm Stage 4 lung cancer, they gave me 12-18 months, 8 months ago and the clock is ticking.. I've got all my family etc and I'm as comfortable as can be considering the situation.. I've stuck my head, hands and heart right in on my guitar though my friend and I'm just loving it.. I'm playing along to youtube vids and learning all of the songs and tunes that I've loved from my whole life from wherever I heard them and it's a right mish-mash of different stuff .. Rock, Jazz, Classical even TV themes bla bla.. I'll be leaving all my guitar parts of these songs recorded with a local recording guy who's a friend, where, for any musician who is interested can add their part to the recording, no matter their instrument.. Even if I don't get it all finished up, I'm having a wonderful time trying and it's all I have left as I live and love everything about Guitar and its music and I keep playing 🎸🔊
@Sjwolosz321.im so sorry on your news. Its good you have your most cherished family and friends around you when your time nears its end godbless you. 🙏🕊🕊🕊🕊🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🌈❤🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🐬🐬🐬🐬🕊🦋🕊🦋🕊❤🌹🕊🦋
If people are mired down in addictions and sickness a lot of the time they try to pull people into the undertow with them, whether they mean to or not. So that could be completely on point.
He had such an impact on my life, from being a little kid and hearing van halen for the first time and 40 years later im still listening to them every day. So sad nut so happy for all the amazong memories
Never forget hearing him play for the first time in 77 There was nothing else like it back then.....now everyone thinks they can play like him....nobody could play how he did
First time I heard MJ's Beat it... I heard the guitar solo and I jumped up... "WTF? That sounds like Eddie!" Id had only discovered Van Halen a few months before but damn... that guitar sound just sticks in your head. Even when you hear it on a pop album you know who's playing! Few years later I was told that yes indeed... it was Eddie! I knew it !!! I f'ing knew it!!! - I told my best friend who was into MJ! "See? My guitar god is soo good he played on your favorite pop singer's #1 album ! Ha!!!!"
Van Halen’s first 5 albums shaped by teenage years and gave me much joy. I moved back to Texas when 1984 came out and moved on to King Diamond at that point. Yeh, it was a dark time.
well if it was a dark time, what were you Doing Listening to King Diamond for? LOL I got much Joy from listening to VH & many other bands. My Dark time didn't come until 1993 when things changed alot Musically
King diamond was definitely on another level of heavy metal! Loved it! And I enjoyed both singers with VH but I could not stand David Lee Roth! He just annoyed me with the EGO!! But they all rocked !!! Miss watching and hearing Eddie jam❤
I do have great love for Wolfgang Van Halen. As my own father was an alcoholic, and understand the son’s concern about his Dad! It’s a Hell of a family life! But it has been what you have dealt with your whole life, and don’t know anything else!
Yes indeed. My Uncle Ceri died in his 60s & he couldn't stop drinking & smoking either God love him.....These addictions are so hard to get free from............... Some people who haven't lived in families with alcoholics just don't realize. Wolfgang actually rescued his Father from alcohol at key moments when things were going badly. He was the person who gave Edward the incentive to break free because his love for his Son was even stronger than the pull of the alcohol.
Thank God 4 his mum I saw an interview with Valerie Where she was asked If there was a fire What would u grab She answered The pictures her little son made 4 her
One of my favorite VH songs is “ Im The One “, It really showcases Eddie’s guitar skills. I know there are a lot of other songs that do the same but “I’m The One “ is a very underrated and underplayed song. I
I'm just so grateful Eddie and by extension Van Halen's music and concerts, which I went to, were part of my life. From my early teens all the way into my early 50's, Van Halen music has always been part of my life. From Vinyl LPs, many which I destroyed from constant wear and tear, then cassette tapes in my car, which I easily destroyed many times over, then my cassette walkman, then CDs in my car and Discman and at home etc. I bought so many VH albums and never regretted a single purchase. Note: I never bought VH 3... lol So while i was very saddened to have lost EVH in the same year I lost another legendary musician, Neil Peart of Rush, I'm just very grateful I lived during the "golden age of modern rock" where I saw the rise and success of these legends of rock. Especially Eddie. So RIP EVH and thank you for shaping my music culture for over 4 decades! If it wasn't for you, and Neil Peart, I'd be listening to crappy disco. ugh...
I don’t need to say anything about Edward that hasn’t already been said. But in my opinion he’s the one and only. If you’re reading this then please listen to his son mammoth. I’m certain you will be blown away!
Yes it was I liked it better than Women and Children first I think Mean Street is one of their toughest if not toughest songs I rock it on the drums all the time
2008 he looked great. He burnt the candle at both ends and in the middle. Super Star Rock Star with loads of money and fame that had an addictive personality like a lot of people plus for him people would give him drugs just to be near the great EVH. Right or wrong he lived the life. My step father died of lung cancer and never smoked a day in his life, many young people get different forms of cancer it is a hateful disease. RIP EVH!
I kept playing one song from that album over and over... Guess which? yup... unchained I wore out my Vinyl LP and broke 2 cassettes by constantly playing it
Was he? He couldn't perform in front of people unless he was high. Is that happiness? :D Even at age 12, he told his father he was too nervous in front of people. His father handed him a beer and a cigarette to relax him. But eventually that wasn't strong enough.
Dave became someone so different than we thought he was from the early years. He was a hard rocker and wild and after 5 records they just went pop. Very bad for the hard rock fans that made them famous but financially going pop allowed them to reach a massive fan base and sold albums very well. Great business decision. The real heartache to us all is we only got 4 hard rock albums from VH. I wish they would have stuck to the VH I sound all the way. I think they still would have done very well
Totally agree!! The first 4 VH albums were solid creative hard rock. Eddie's guitar work was incredible! Eddie going to keyboards and Hagar replacing Roth made VH a pop rock band. I never was a Roth fan ever! Had Eddie been able to find a David King (Fastway) Lenny Wolf (Kingdom Come) or Jack Russell (Great White), VH would have been the Zeppelin of America.
Hard rock? ?? Yes like Could This Be Magic, Dancin' in the Streets, Happy Trails. Beautiful Girls , Big Bad Bill *atomic eyeroll* If Dildo Dave had his way , they would have just remade show tunes their whole career
@@eccrawford7759 Hagar's lyrics and pipes are legendary. If you analyze it, Eddie was already heading down another path. Hagar just wrote lyrics to Eddie's more mature compositions.
@@gansosmansos He’ll yeh it’s VH is hard rock. I’m talking with Dave. They played what they wanted so they also had fun tunes in there as well but just listen to the greatest songs. Eruption, Running with the devil, I’m the one, Tora Tora, everybody what’s some. VH is one of the wildest bands ever. Look at the stage show. They were also loud as hell. That’s hard rock
@@zackk695 "I don't know where you get your delusions, Laser Brain" - Princess Leia Organa 1984 was made BECAUSE Eddie was dismayed with Diver Down and Women and Children First. He wanted to do what HE wanted to do. Not cover tunes etc. He dragged Dildo Dave kicking and screaming to 1984.
I grew up with Eddie on Holliston Ave. in Pasadena back in the early 1970s. David Lee Roth used to date my sister’s best friend, who lived across the street from the Van Halen’s. Dave would show up at her house every day and lay back on his motorcycle in front of her house, waiting for her to get home from school. You could hear these guys practicing in their garage all the way down the street to my house (a block away). Believe it or not, I was never really into the band Van Halen at the time. My taste in music had gone a different direction back then. The best thing I remember about the Van Halen’s (being a kid at the time), is Eddie’s mom always gave out the best candy every Halloween to us trick-or-treaters. So, when I think of Eddie, I don’t think of him as some kind of rock star, I think of him as a childhood friend who I always used to pick on for going to PHS (Pasadena High School) because (as everyone knows) the best high school in Pasadena is BLAIR HIGH SCHOOL!!! Sorry Eddie - I guess I still can’t help myself!🤣
How can someone so gifted and smart about music be so dumb about smoking?? I'm a former smoker, quit over 40 years ago. It says on the box it will fuck you up......and you choose to ignore that?? WTF???
People forget Eddie was classically trained in music. He probably had a good handle on music theory before picking up the guitar. He said in an interview that he never "read the book" on how to play guitar but his abilities on the piano translated. People say he made everything up as he went but I don't think he did. I think he understood music theory and applied it. He just did it in a way that hadn't been done on the guitar before. I'm not taking anything away from him. Eddie changed our lives with 1984.
yeah exactly like Getty lee and Neil Peart in rush also highly technical musicians and even J Masics (Dinasaur jr) Took jazz drum classes before forming a band and eventually forming his more famous bands
He wouldn't have had a handle on music theory in order to have applied it because its theoretical abstractions would have been too difficult to comprehend at his age of 6-12 which was when he studied classical piano. If people want to read theory into his ear playing way of doing guitar later in order to teach others then that's fair enough. People have their own way of doing things & they should not be chastised ..Not me just me but law before mob.
@@walterevans2118 A 6 - 12 year old would understand basic music theory like chord structure. I'm not saying he was throwing in Modes into his guitar playing.

I love Eddie but as a doctor it's absolutely ludicrous for anyone to attribute the cause of his lung cancer to a metal pick and completely discount decades and decades of breathing in (to the lungs!) carcinogens that are widely known to cause lung cancer. Also, gamma knife surgery is done all over the United States, not just in Germany.

Ed lived his life to the fullest. I for 1, enjoy the music he left behind as it certainly plays a roll n keeping me young. Thanx Al, your not forgotten either. Van Halen 👍
Michael Anthony a great guitarist, a class act and a good man all around. I was his landscaper for a couple years. Had to be one of the most humble, mellow dudes Id ever met. Good family man, good heart, good green, good show.
Largely WELL RESEARCHED video. But with the title of the vid doesn't cut it... All in all, EDDIE VAN HALEN'S history was NOT 'tragic' .....His history was GLORIOUS.....Just LISTEN to his MUSIC....His INNOVATIONS , His PASSION. His LEGACY.
Yup. Whatever Edward’s human frailties and problems and sins, the man clearly LOVED playing music and entertaining people. If the number of “joyous hours Eddie Van Halen provided to the world’s music listeners” were tallied up, it would be a staggering figure.
@@reprintranch Edward changed the world of guitar playing and the way equipment is built & wrote GLORIOUS music but he made errors of judgement and was a fallible human being like the rest of us. He was not a demagogue,,,,he did not set out to make a mark on the world or wish to be 'a guitar hero' or things like that...That kind of happened but he never wanted it & it was something which other people collectively projected onto him.... I just think its important to remember Edward for all the GOOD things he did. & not to dwell on the negatives.
Despite those things there is undeniably a lot of tragedy as well. Eddie may have been a good person deep down but he certainly treated a lot of people very poorly at times, his band mates, his fans, his ex wife. Alcohol probably was the root cause of most of that which makes it even more tragic. He would still be here if he had cleaned up, which is also tragic. There are certainly many positive impacts he had on the guitar, music, and people but there is certainly a tragic story here, just as there is a triumphant history. Things are seldom black and white, and history is told from different perspectives, as it should be.
They're hoping to attract the viewership of the negativity junkies that inhabit a large portion of the internet - pretty much the same type of approach every television news network uses. They'll do anything for a buck. They don't care that they're contributing to the crumbling of our society. Really, how often does any news network report good news? We've got a sick society and these parasites are capitalizing on it by pandering to the sickest of the sick. They're amoral.
Michael mustve really wanted to be part of van halen to agree to those terms. I can understand the parting ways with Dave over egos and what ever other contributing factors, but Michael was there for the band, he was there for THEM. It's always sad to see a legend fall from grace. Being drunk on stage, not being able to preform well.
I grew up in 1980's and Van Helen was one of my favorite band. Now, I know the Eddie and Alex came from another country, so did I and the family. The early years were tough for an immigrant family.
Most people would have kicked the van halens asses and filed a lawsuit and talked crap but Mike just stayed loyal to his band mates and fans. He made a life long friend in Sammy who from what I hear is one of the most unselfish and giving people on the planet. Sammy is rich as sin too, so Mike is ok.
im young, i never saw the rise of van halen, but ive loved music my whole life, especially van halen, and listening to eddie play helped my through alot of my depression, the second i heard about his death, i was distrotten, i knew right then and there that i need to play guitar, now i cant stop playing, i have my own band, and i love music with everything i have, so i really need to thank eddie for everything. rest in piece, rock n roll legend and icon
I wish I had half the charisma that Sammy and Mikey had in that band they are so charismatic because to them it’s about the music and never the greedy side of fame and money. As for Diamond Dave he is so unique, smart and a party guy that how could you not be a fan of his! Now Ed and Alex especially Eddie is my guitar hero next to DimeBag Darrel
Dave is unique? And smart? Are we talking about the same Dave???? Dave was egotistical, obnoxious, always had to be the center of attention, couldn't sing worth s%^t! Had cliche lyrics for songs when he was insisting on doing his little dance cover songs.
I feel the same way about Wolfgang. He inherited his dad's talent but won't have a long career if he doesn't get his weight under control. I say this with all the respect intended. This isn't body shaming. I just want him to have a very long and heathy career.
Saw them in 1993 in outside arena in Phoenix. It was when Eddie still looked really good and they all sounded great! I was not a cannabis user at the time because I was 8 months pregnant but people were blazing all around me and I actually got dizzy from it lol. My good friend, who was a nurse, was with me and helped me get out of the smoke and sit on the grass. I was not about to miss them in concert even though I was so far along in my pregnancy. I use to tell my daughter, who was born just 3 weeks later, she may never see Van Halen but she certainly heard them live❤ One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Such a great memory 😊

Like it or not, Michael Anthony's harmonies ARE crucial to the sound of Van Halen records
Undeniable. His bass playing as well. Huge pocket. Always grooved.
I think people thought that it was Eddie doing those high harmonies.
Michael's vocals were icing on the cake. They were one of the things that made VH sound like no other rock band.
Im not sure who wouldn’t like it.
The one thing Roth era, Hagar era, cherone era fans all agree on
...and to think that he wasn't paid adequately 😢.
Van Helen's bros said that he didn't contribute anything to their songs & music. So, he was paid like session/hired bassist and not as one of the band's members...

Calm down, Skippy.
Wow I feel your pain hopefully you're doing good and keep on rocking that guitar
Wishing you are the inner strength the journey takes. Happy we all have Eddie.
I sure hope youve heard of fen-ben-dazole! If not, START LOOKING IT UP!

Sammy Hagar & Michael Anthony...two class acts! Can't wait to see them on tour this summer 🔥
The fact that Mike took that crap from the other 3 proves that he is a better man than I. I would have told them to take a long walk off a short pier.
NEWSFLASH: Mike was the one who walked away from Van Halen not the other way around . Eddie and Alex made it clear either you are with us or you're with Sammy and Mike thought long and hard and decided to move on and chose Hagar. Only after Mike jumped ship did Alex and Eddie not treat him well , can't blame the VH brothers at all .
but then you wouldn't have had Mikes money
We'll just have to take your word on that

I met Eddie when I was living in a Sober living in 1991 in Burbank . He was in rehab on the third floor at Saint Joes Medical Center. When he took his 90 day chip at an NA meeting, I gave him a book called as Bill sees it.He gave me a big hug. After he got out of rehab, I saw him
around at AA meetings.
I didn’t get sober until 2000’s
ITS REALLY SIMPLE !!! How
NOT EASY !!
Bro, you’re the luckiest person I’ve ever met. I’m gonna try to get you to millions of likes.
You are ?? Ok. I’m not sure what that means. But thank you.
Quitting drugs & alcohol is the easy part. Living without those vices, is the hard part.
I hope you're still recovering. I have been clean since 2004.
Congratulations. I am. I’m a little older now. I don’t see any benefit of drinking or using anymore. Life is hard enough. WITHOUT IT
AA has monopolized recovery, with the help from judges and courts. Being drunk once in 90 days is a amazing improvement from being drunk every day for 90 days
.... It's ok , we all have a bad day occasionally
a metal pick not the debauchary of heavy smoking, come on eddie
Probably both
EMF radiation ain't no joke and here we are bathing in it every day :(
Anytime you ingest ANYTHING for decades and abruptly stop ingesting it you’re body will rebel.
Because David knew him.
Everyone knows this...

As I said before, I’m a smoker and drinker, but when you ignore doctors recommendations, and only descend more into addictions, things will go bad!

David Lee Roth isn't an artist. He's a showman. Eddie was an artist. Hence, the conflict.
💯
Dave is definitely an artist --- maybe he couldn't play guitar, but he was VERY artistic with his lyrics, his fashion, and his stagecraft --- his flying spin kicks were like poetry in motion
Straight up!
DLR was a main writer, the force behind the marketing, so he's more than a showman.....but he indeed calls himself a master of ceremonies.
Understood but there are plenty of Showman-Musician combos that work great with no conflict. The problem is that Diamond Dave tends to be an A-hole and doesn't know how to play nice for too long. Ask Sammy Hagar.

absolute power corrupts, absolutely.

I just quit. 3 days so far!

Hpv??
I went to visit Eddie when he was just diagnosed he told me it was from holding the pick in his mouth. Pre 2017 he looked great he cruised in a blue classic convertible sports car. He always smiled and waved then he just disappeared from public. Sadly I didn't know how bad it was. I avoided the internet and media didn't carry his story. I played with him in his garage while he was in high-school and building the original Frankenstein. During the DLR era he invited me to play with them. RIP buddy.
Man, you knew Eddie?
Not just EVH had addictions most musicians did look at Ozzie for one
actually….. the credit goes to his Mom.

Can’t believe they did that to Michael Anthony!
I bet he could believe it!
@1956tojo You're completely wrong on timeline.
Yep see that tour at the Oakland Coliseum I think they opened for Talking Heads not quite sure though

Was he? He couldn't perform in front of people unless he was high. Is that happiness? :D
Even at age 12, he told his father he was too nervous in front of people.

Then back forward again to Maiden an etc. damn. 70s / 80s we’re amazing music. Got my first guitar age 12. 1982. Still the love of my life. Thank you Eddie & Randy.
after a few year gone and this still breaks my heart,in the same way when Steie Ray Vaughen died...DAMMMNN🎸🎸🎸
They would not have been as popular without DLR . Ya, he's a goof , but a hell of a Front man !
I don't know of a front man that was better than david
Dlr? It's his last name, it says It all
He’s not just Dutch! Never knew that. He is half Indonesian.

very refreshing in a vast sea of click bait. AI voiced, inaccurate crap from china, a respectful and well researched tribute like that blooms. Great work, I'm subscribing!
Well made docu thank you very much 😊! So sad this genius is gone...
That's damn straight!!! Far from tragic...other than him leaving us too soon...🤟🤟🤟
Being drunk on stage, not being able to preform well.
yeah, seems like Mike had no ti very little self respect
I grew up in 1980's and Van Helen was one of my favorite band. Now, I know the Eddie and Alex came from another country, so did I and the family. The early years were tough for an immigrant family.
2024, and this still brought me to tears 😭 We miss you, Edward. 🫡
Wow, good details, thank you. RIP Eddie, you're number 1 for me!
Great video! Very informative.
R.I.P. EVH
Thank you for posting this vedio. I pray for Eddie and his family.
im young, i never saw the rise of van halen, but ive loved music my whole life, especially van halen, and listening to eddie play helped my through alot of my depression, the second i heard about his death, i was distrotten, i knew right then and there that i need to play guitar, now i cant stop playing, i have my own band, and i love music with everything i have, so i really need to thank eddie for everything. rest in piece, rock n roll legend and icon
I can not like him. He sucks as a vocalist and as a lyricist.
He a cover-song squealer
Dave is unique? And smart? Are we talking about the same Dave???? Dave was egotistical, obnoxious, always had to be the center of attention, couldn't sing worth s%^t! Had cliche lyrics for songs when he was insisting on doing his little dance cover songs.

Amen
Lol, I so agree. When I read that, I was like, I can NOT like him. haha @@gansosmansos
@@eccrawford7759 Daves a closet gay needing attention by any means necessary, he is far too articulate to be a generic white boy hetero
I feel the same way about Wolfgang. He inherited his dad's talent but won't have a long career if he doesn't get his weight under control. I say this with all the respect intended. This isn't body shaming. I just want him to have a very long and heathy career.
Hell be on ozympic with the rest of the country within the next year
Eat something.
Like mother like son 😮
I remember when I spun the first album it was like getting hit with a ton of bricks. Van Halen. I can't believe they're gone
I still can’t believe EVH is gone reality hits me every once and while and it’s like wow! Eddie Van Halen died. The one and only true guitar hero.
I use to tell my daughter, who was born just 3 weeks later, she may never see Van Halen but she certainly heard them live❤
One of the best concerts I've ever been to. Such a great memory 😊
