  • In this episode of Shooting & Country TV, gun tester, coach and Clay Shooter contributor Drennan Kenderdine reviews the Beretta A400 Xcel Sporting shotgun, putting it through its paces at Oakedge Shooting Ground in Staffordshire.
    Drennan starts by showing you exactly how to put the A400 Xcel together - very useful if you're new to semi-auto guns - and explains what the gun comes with, before taking it onto the ground and demonstrating how it performs.
    Being a semi-auto, he then puts a range of cartridges of different weights through the gun to ensure it cycles everything without a hitch, before shooting it on a selection of different clay targets to see how it handles.
    The full, technical review with more detail can be read in the first 2022 issue of Clay Shooter magazine, which will be available to pick up free in clay grounds and gun shops from February 23rd.
    UK distributer for Beretta: www.gmk.co.uk/
    Beretta A400 Xcel Sporting grey/ATS: £1,900 (without Kick-Off Stock), £1,950 (with Kick-Off stock)

    Why do you chamber a round and then rack the bolt again?

    • @ShootingCountryTV
      @ShootingCountryTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Reply Drennan: Racking the bolt comes from the days when I used to shoot a Remington 1100 back in the 80s and early 90s. Remies were notorious in the UK for the ejector claw breaking. By racking the bolt slightly you could visually see straight away if the ejector claw had broken, by it either grabbing the cartridge if all was well, or not if it had broken.
      Having spent so many years doing this, it's become a habit that I subconsciously still do all these years later! But you're quite right in that it's entirely unnecessary on this gun... it's just my own quirk and makes no difference to the brilliance of the Beretta A400. Thank you for your comment.

    Interesting. Among my over and unders I also have a Beretta UGB25Xcel which I love. I am always asked if it jams or doesn't cycle properly. The answer is no. I can and do use 24grm and 28grm shells and both work with ease. Given that Beretta have the mechanical parts for the UGB why haven't they put it all in a cheaper and lighter semi I wonder? The side loading, bottom ejection system is a thing of wonder and so much better for clay shooting.

    Hi,
    When you do your next semi auto review, can you please remind semi-auto shooters to pick up their cartridges when they spray them all around the shooting cage/position... This is an constant issue at shooting grounds and creates such time consuming work for ground staff.
    Cheers :-)

    Nice shooting man. I had a A400 and after 1oo rounds or so it began to jam. I always cleaned it after every shoot. 100 to 125 it would jam e wry so often. How this gun. Have they improved the gas system?

    What’s the bolt release made from? Looks like due to its length there’s quite a bit of leverage on the elbow of it! I’d be concerned about the longevity of it, not only in use but also when in a bag in the boot etc

      I have one, it’s high quality polymer with a metal backing, It works a hell of a lot better than the standard beretta button release, i don’t see a way it could break.

    Its wrong to lubricate the piston and use it without clean all the oil.The piston has to be dry for maximum reliability after a lot of shots

    I’ve the same model in the a400 blue Xcel sport there great guns But I think You overdone it with the oiling at the start there’s no need to put oil on the piston and I don’t understand why you pull the bolt handle back when the gun loaded a cartridge in the chamber unnecessarily

    • @ShootingCountryTV
      @ShootingCountryTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Reply from Drennan: I choose to spray a very light coating of oil onto the piston because it makes it easier to clean, and Beretta have confirmed the gun runs fine either dry or wet with a light coating of the correct oil. However, you must ensure if you do choose to oil the piston that it is only a light coating, as shown in this video.
      Racking the bolt comes from the days when I used to shoot a Remington 1100 back in the 80s and early 90s. Remies were notorious in the UK for the ejector claw breaking.
