Restoring a Race Boat for CHEAP! How to remove floor & stringer, Sleekcraft SST Sunday Update #2

  • Thank you for your support! The success of my last SST video was pretty unexpected, viewers like you helped pay for the fiberglass resin and lumber needed to support this project! Huge thank you!
    I picked up a crazy rare ultra high performance twin tunnel hull ModVP Sleekcraft SST for $500! This was one of sleek's fastest hulls ever, and was famous for racing in the ModVP series in 70s/80s/90s before it was banned for being too dangerous! This thing is going to need EVERYTHING, but I'll show you how you can tackle all these major repairs without spending a lot of cash.
    This video goes into more detail on removing the rest of the floor under the splashwell, removing the fuel tank, and removing the main stringer. I'll cover all the tips and tricks I use along the way; it's a messy job but it's not that hard to do, so feel free to follow along. Hopefully watching this will help convince people to tackle their own boat restorations; it's dirty work sometimes but it's not too complex or challenging, so please leave a message if you have any questions and I'll try to help.
    If you liked this video or learned something, please check out some of my other videos and stay tuned for updates to the SST project!
    Products used in this video; clicking them supports my channel but doesn't cost you a penny, cheers!

    I found a Allison craft years ago stripped down to the hull abandoned in the marsh land on Long Island ny. Hull was mint along with gel coat and transom. Damn I should’ve rebuilt it but towed it in and sold it for 500. It was same color and very similar looking to this gem your rebuilding.

      One time a police chase ended outside my apartment building, and I saw the perp ran off. The cops showed up a minute later, and from my window I told them which direction he ran off. About 30 minutes later I went outside to snap a photo from the end of the street, so I could share with my friends that I helped a police chase. I was then surrounded by cops, some with their weapons out and ordered to put my hands up. They tackled me to the ground and beat me for "resisting arrest", and then threw me in jail til 3am. My case was dropped when I went to see the DA.

    Looking forward to seeing how you go about replacing the transom. Made a 9hr round trip today to pick up a 77 Aristocrat. Ended up walking. He replaced the transom but did it completely wrong and didn't glass the inside, the wood wasn't cut right and the deck and stringer that he assured were solid were completely rotten. Overall there wasn't a single good thing about it other than being a Sleek

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you not even glass the inside after replacing it?! Makes no sense.

    • @SirrBassius
      @SirrBassius 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ADDvanced oh it was worse than just that. The splash well was cracked at the sides and in the middle where the engine almost broke off. The wood he used was 2 layers of 3/8" plywood that he just epoxied together, stuck in there and then glassed the back of the hull on. Which it also wasn't nearly the width of the boat. From my understanding he just used a chainsaw and cut the entire rear of the boat out. The boat also had standing water in it... took a pretty good number of pics of it

    My go-to for stringer removal is a sledge hammer. Your chick is the best! Lastly, Mark Weigl of Tuff Marine is a friend of mine and he showed me something I never knew about stringers. The glass does all the work and the wood is simply a form for it. The wood gets wet, freezes then cracks the glass. In his Tuff 21, he literally used a cardboard form and then layered bi-directional glass over it. It saves a lot of weight and it NEVER rots out and is every bit as strong. For anyone who thinks that is BS, go cut a Skater in half, you will not find anything but thin cardboard inside their stringers either.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not even sure I need a stringer, since this boat has those two tunnels, it's already pretty stiff.

    Please pronounce Porsche with two syllables. There's even a video from Porsche about how to pronounce the name correctly.

      I can't do it. I feel like I should be wearing a polo with a sweater wrapped around my neck when I say it like that. It makes me think of the dudes who play racquet ball or take badminton too seriously.

      @@ADDvanced Sure, but it's the correct pronunciation.

      It was super, super cool. From what I read, it was not the risk that wound up killing it; it was Mercury's policy back then of blueprinting engines for certain people, so it became a game of who you knew. These "production engines" would win so often/frequently that OMC dropped out completely. Idk how true all that is, this is just from reading message boards.
