Cleetus u prolly won't read this but here's some driving tips: trim down all the way to plane, full throttle to plane and let off once the bow falls, trim up about 4 seconds after plane for neutral trim, when you hit it it might start chime walking you need to steer the opposite direction of where the boat leans to balance the boat, its a game of balancing it on the pad( flat surface on the keel), if it progressively chime walks more and more then simply let off, readjust trim and try again, you wanna get the bow as high out of the water for max speed and minimum drag, you do that by raising the trim, and personally I would take off the Neutral safety switch which is two yellow wires with an orange or red line so you could shift with the motor off then start it in gear to minimize wear on the lower unit, most important thing is to make smooth and small adjustments when driving, don't jerk the wheel hard when balancing and don't let off too hard or the boat will kick the transom out to the right because of torque steer. Just tryna help you out I've owned a lot of 70+ boats and driven a lot and built a lot over at our shop.

Adjust the cables and and idle. Don’t, don’t get rid of the other prop before you try it. He said 68 mph with it. It will feel like Leroy launching. You need to find the max rpm suggested for the motor, when wide open if you can’t reach it, go a pitch lower in number. Example, 21 to a 19 and try again. The pitch is like gears. It’s number of turns per foot of travel through the water. So a 17 will spin faster, launch hard like 4.10 vs a 21 pitch being like 3.08 gears. 50 is fast on the water so 68…. I think you have them beat in anything with that extra prop on.
Usually we don’t adjust any of it we start in gear and shift with motor off. Don’t need to adjust anything. Even with the idle low, the higher pitch props push so much water it will blow the gears apart eventually
Since there are two man teams. You should do a race where you have to…. Back Truck, boat, and trailer down the ramp.. launch the boat… Park the truck… both men get in the boat…do a small circuit lap ending at the ramp…. Retrieve the boat with the truck and trailer… time stops when the boat is out of the water again. Teamwork and Operational skills test.
I like the idea of a Le Mans start kind of boat race BUT.... these are public boat ramps and they usually have a lot of 'no wake' zones where you can't go fast until you are out a bit more. IMHO Cleetus should get a tad more on that lower + trailer winch to patch up and reinforce a few real bad spots on that trailer like that middle that is almost cracked through and that loose bolt holding those rusty leaf springs. Yikes! A little welding would go a long way. That whole area looks really rotted out and a bit unsafe for the road. Would suck to see FlaminGO not even make it to the race due to the trailer literally breaking apart. Looking forward to see what the competition brings in the $2500 challenge.
You have a drain plug. 09:21, Below the "u" in transomtuffner. That is the drain for that upper area. The plug in there needs to be pulled out and put in the proper place in the bilge drain. Can't help on that trailer though!
It looks a little small, especially when you can see the other side coming through from the back of the boat.. On that same time stamp what is that black and red plug on top to the left?
This is the most Florida man thing I have ever seen. Buying the sketchiest pink boat on the sketchiest trailer from a sketchy local, and then immediately dumping it in the water and pinning it. Don't ever change
I did the same thing when I was like 17 didn't know to check the transom in it, engine never fell off had alot of good times in her but I ditched it about a year later
Sketchy is Florida's middle name & sometimes the best way to go to have a fun time.

Luckily a giraffe can see over the bow when you start :) Competition ideas: 1. Drag race (no brainer ;)) 2. Pull race (hook the boats together and see who pulls who) 3. Slalom course to see how nimble the boats are 4. Rescue mission. (Pull up a 50kg floaty thingie/doll/whatever from the water into the boat, fastest to return to shore wins) 5. Smoothness, plank with 5-6 glasses full off liquid. Run a set course, most liquid left and shortest time wins (or shortest time wins as long as X amount of liquid is left)

Exactly what I was thinking - shift cable is too much forward and not enough travel in reverse, lower idle speed. Time for McFarland welding to break out the MIG and stick some scrap metal onto that trailer as well!
Dude talks so fast and just spits out random information. At a minimum, I would put the whale find on the outboard. At least give you more controlled trim.
Two things: Boat motors have an ignition interrupt switch for shifting into gear, this thing is either not working or the shift cable has way to much play and you are getting into the power on the throttle cable before its in gear. Second, trim the motor all the way down before trying to plane the boat out. This is all about angle of attack between the hull and the motor. I have never seen a boat that was designed to not start with the motor full down. Trim out once plane.
There is nothing that fancy on that old motor. The shift/throttle cables are out of time with each other, out of adjustment in general, the base timing on the engine is wrong, the dogs are rounded over or the idle is just high. It usually goes something like the engine stalls when put into gear so people start jacking with shit and end up on just cranking the idle up and beating it to death. Old Merc v6's 78-95ish, you set base timing, then you set marks for ignition advance, then you adjust the shift cable so that at the point where it is engaged into gear matches ignition advance marks together. There should be zero throttle opening at the carbs at that point, only a few degrees of advance on timing to carry the load of idling in gear. If it wont idle in gear like that the carbs need to be cleaned or compression is low.

Whatever the challenge is,don't include stoping. The backwash on that boat is brutal. It'll sink in a minute. It's rated for an 85 and it's got that 175 on it.
You clearly know nothing about checkmates... these boats were way over built for the time. Also with a little transom bracing you could practically ha g anything off the back of these. Pretty sure this boat is 18ft and was rated at 185hp. I had an enchanter (20ft) with a 200hp and a predictor (16ft) also with a 200hp. (Was rated at 150hp). The backwash is only horrible because he got completely out of it and it's a low slung boat.
My family had a 16-foot hydrostream that had kind of the same problem, right when the backwash is about to the transom you just give it a blip of throttle to get in front of the wave, worked every time
Trim all the way down before trying to take off. Then give it all the throttle and trim up little by little until you feel the front lift. Be smooth with the counter steering. Trim down before just letting off the throttle. If the prop shaft is below the pad, there’s no need to run the chopper prop. Chopper prop is designed to run on the surface. You have the lower unit for it. Most importantly BE CAREFUL. That boat is no where near 700lbs. That motor is 300-350lbs.
I have a much simpler version. Throttle all the way out the hole then ease off the throttle. Your right about the weight which is why at lower throttle it rides so nose up.

It’s a 2 stroke out board only gauge for mtr would be water temp but they run on the edge of overheating normally and it has a alarm and safety shut down . I’m sure the oil injection has been removed if it hasn’t then that would be the first move I made and run premix so there would be no need for a oil level gauge but even if it is still oil injected it also has a low oil alarm and a safety shut off ( that both need to be wired through if it is removed ) so that would only leave a fuel gauge if it has a mounted onboard tank and obviously that’s not a needed gauge if you know what you are doing … so you sir are 100 precent correct start it and go no gauges are needed ! Did you here dude when Cleet first fired it ? He said it smokes some lmao yea it’s 2 stroke might want to know what you have before you take it out lol 😂 I’m sure Cleet knew !
That is a coned XR6 gearcase and most likely a 2.5L Mercury. You need to turn the engine off, shift three gear, start it and do engine cut offs for each shift.
@@timsorensen2085 that’s not how race boats work. This isn’t a cruiser. Go up to any real racer and tell him he needs to adjust his cables cause his junk won’t shift while running and they’ll laugh you out of the parking lot.
@@78freewheeler this is not a race engine. It's an off the shelf 175 Mariner. (Mercury). Shifting them in gear is totally normal and acceptable when cables are adjusted properly and components are working properly.
I feel like he also needs a hydraulic jackplate and a different lower unit gearing or a prop...seems like it has plenty of power for the prop once it's rolling though. Could just be motor height too.
10 days after he left - dude had nothing.. And was pissed he sold the boat. Crazy 10 days though. Basically seemed like one day, since there was no sleep in that time, naturally.
You guys did great Just get the shift linkage checked out on that big motor You might throw her in the water then spend a day repairing and welding up.some new steel on that trailer , everything here is fixable and not major so your fine , you did great When you gave her top speed it looked like she was easily doing 75mph or more That big v6 175 is a beast Mariner made good outboards back in the day What a beauty Now what you might consider is sanding her down and giving her a new gel coat and a better paint job A nicer color Fix that leaking transome You got a huge bow area I'm thinking cut it away and make her an open bowrider or you could raise up the bow nicely and make her into a cuddy cabin All in all that is one sweet ride

Need to adjust them shifter and throttle cables brother! Costs nothing and will save that lower unit. Don't be afraid to shift it into gear quickly. That's how they operate 👍 All of the advice on trim for launch is spot on 👌
A timed lap while pulling Squirrel and Alec in a tube, timed maneuverability at speed test with 10 seconds penalty if you hit the bouy, Party Barge...how many friends can fit on without falling off or sinking.
Cleet word of advice. If you want maximum top end. trim the bad boy up while boating until it starts to cavitate. Then bump her down slightly and you'll get maximum performance.
That was a pretty good deal; I don’t know about US prices but here in Greece, the motor alone would’ve been worth that amount. New gelcoat, interior refit, screen, new seats… for another 1000-1500 depending on how much you do yourself, I reckon you’d have a great fun boat on your hands. Mine looked like that when I bought it.
probably tuned/modified to race only, some of them simply disliked shifting into reverse if setup tight for best forward control. but who knows, it could just be an abortion. after hearing it more, something is very silly there, maybe the wrong control for it, bad control or shifter/throttle cables swapped?
Naw that’s how Mercury’s are they grind just have to shift fast the reason it is moving so fast just clutched in is because it has a big speed prop on it hence why it’s slow planing off . It’s not idled to high it’s just moving a ton of water put a power prop on it and it will move slow clutched in !
You can adjust the reverse and forward gear engagement from the motor, there is a proper process for it, shouldnt take you too long. Will help with the grinding of the gears.
That mariner is no joke they rip actually the setup isn’t bad. The hole shot and cavitation don’t sound horrible. It’s all throttle and trim. Don’t air her out too much. Get a hot foot 👌
yes, agreed, if you lack experience with a fast outboard motor boat itcan hurt you real fast, I've seen 18 ft bass boats trimmed out to high and blow over. once was in February and the water was damn cold, we all jumped in our boats to go to him and didn't trim the motor dawn and did like this boat of cletes, just poured the gas out the carbs in front

His tournament boat in '99 (I think) was a Bumblebee with a 200 FICHT on it and it's the only boat he's had try to come over on him from lifting so high. Hot foot saved him that day. Still the fastest boat he's ever run as his personal boat but the Bass Cat Cougar he's running now with the new 250 V8 Mercury is the second fastest he's had. I'm sure he's happy to not be getting passed nearly as much running the Bass Cat after running Ranger (mostly 520's) for 20 years. As a bass boat owner myself I cringe at how some run theirs and am glad I'm not riding with them driving like some of them do.

Could be a sweet little setup for 2500$ Defiantly need to adjust the shift and throttle cables, bleed the steering, and try trimming that motor all the way in before jumping on plane then trimming out as you increase in speed. The motor could prolly come down a couple holes on that manual jackplate as well
Cletus, you need to see a person that knows about outboard racing, these aren't jet boats, these boats will hurt you if you don't know what you are doing,let off the gas slow,with the prop torque sometimes they pitch sideways, trim it under when you take off, all the way on the throttle, it might cavitation a little but it will get on plane quicker, you have a boat that you need instruction on it
All boat motors smoke when you crank em! They’re all running on mixed fuel if there older engines like that one. It’s a V6, two stroke engine which they no longer make anymore. The new motors are 4 stroke and V8 if you buy a new mercury that’s big. Mariner and Mercury are the same thing basically! I actually like the 2 stroke, V6s myself but the EPA made these engine manufactures stop building engines in this configuration because of the unburnt fuel and emissions. The new 4 stroke, V8s are much heavier than the older 2 stroke, V6s. The older engines would jump of the hole much faster because they are so much lighter but the new engines do run much faster top end. Most of your drag boat racers still run the 2 stroke, V6 Mercury motor. However, everything will eventually go to the heavier 4 stroke, V8 because that’s all they make, the new motors last longer, and they’re making much more power now. Mercury has a 450 V8 now, heck they even have a 600 4 stroke, V12 now that weighs like 1600-1800 lbs if I remember correctly. Boat motors have evolved a lot over the past few years now that they have went to 4 stroke engines.
Most people would think about how much more money they could get for the boat, this man was simply thinking about how much meth he can get for 2500 and how quick he could get the money to do so.
Just a tip, I have had boats with similar hulls and speed and have had to add weight to the bow to prevent "Chine walking" before. Used a sand bag or 2, some of these boats have the fuel tank in the bow for this very reason
rarely would anyone add weight *especially at the bow*. adjust balance via setback and also different props produce different bow lift, etc. additionally, chine walk is all in the motor mounts, steering, and drivers ability. a boat must be well setup and learn to be flown.
@@SuperWaterskiboy Well obviously changing other dynamics of the boat would have some affect on chine walk, but for all practical purposes adding a little weight or shifting weight around is used in almost every Motorsport known to man. Even James has added weight to his car to prevent wheelies instead of going back and resetting up the car.

When you take off be trimmed perfectly level, flor it and simultaneously trim out and turn right and then left slightly and it will plane out like a champ! Outboard drag boats are a blast! But launching out the hole is a technique

Two things: Boat motors have an ignition interrupt switch for shifting into gear, this thing is either not working or the shift cable has way to much play and you are getting into the power on the throttle cable before its in gear.
Second, trim the motor all the way down before trying to plane the boat out. This is all about angle of attack between the hull and the motor. I have never seen a boat that was designed to not start with the motor full down. Trim out once plane.
There is nothing that fancy on that old motor. The shift/throttle cables are out of time with each other, out of adjustment in general, the base timing on the engine is wrong, the dogs are rounded over or the idle is just high. It usually goes something like the engine stalls when put into gear so people start jacking with shit and end up on just cranking the idle up and beating it to death. Old Merc v6's 78-95ish, you set base timing, then you set marks for ignition advance, then you adjust the shift cable so that at the point where it is engaged into gear matches ignition advance marks together. There should be zero throttle opening at the carbs at that point, only a few degrees of advance on timing to carry the load of idling in gear. If it wont idle in gear like that the carbs need to be cleaned or compression is low.

You clearly know nothing about checkmates... these boats were way over built for the time. Also with a little transom bracing you could practically ha g anything off the back of these. Pretty sure this boat is 18ft and was rated at 185hp. I had an enchanter (20ft) with a 200hp and a predictor (16ft) also with a 200hp. (Was rated at 150hp). The backwash is only horrible because he got completely out of it and it's a low slung boat.
My family had a 16-foot hydrostream that had kind of the same problem, right when the backwash is about to the transom you just give it a blip of throttle to get in front of the wave, worked every time

Trim all the way down before trying to take off. Then give it all the throttle and trim up little by little until you feel the front lift. Be smooth with the counter steering. Trim down before just letting off the throttle. If the prop shaft is below the pad, there’s no need to run the chopper prop. Chopper prop is designed to run on the surface. You have the lower unit for it. Most importantly BE CAREFUL. That boat is no where near 700lbs. That motor is 300-350lbs.
I have a much simpler version. Throttle all the way out the hole then ease off the throttle. Your right about the weight which is why at lower throttle it rides so nose up.

It’s a 2 stroke out board only gauge for mtr would be water temp but they run on the edge of overheating normally and it has a alarm and safety shut down . I’m sure the oil injection has been removed if it hasn’t then that would be the first move I made and run premix so there would be no need for a oil level gauge but even if it is still oil injected it also has a low oil alarm and a safety shut off ( that both need to be wired through if it is removed ) so that would only leave a fuel gauge if it has a mounted onboard tank and obviously that’s not a needed gauge if you know what you are doing … so you sir are 100 precent correct start it and go no gauges are needed ! Did you here dude when Cleet first fired it ? He said it smokes some lmao yea it’s 2 stroke might want to know what you have before you take it out lol 😂 I’m sure Cleet knew !
That is a coned XR6 gearcase and most likely a 2.5L Mercury. You need to turn the engine off, shift three gear, start it and do engine cut offs for each shift.
Shift interrupter in the control box probably not working. It cuts spark for a second as the shift is made to make life easier on the lower unit.

@@78freewheeler this is not a race engine. It's an off the shelf 175 Mariner. (Mercury). Shifting them in gear is totally normal and acceptable when cables are adjusted properly and components are working properly.

Trim the motor all the way down when you're coming out of the hole and start trimming up when your about on plane.

I feel like he also needs a hydraulic jackplate and a different lower unit gearing or a prop...seems like it has plenty of power for the prop once it's rolling though. Could just be motor height too.

Everyone loves some racing videos. But these boat videos just hit a little different. Every video I watch on this channel is much worth my time of day.
Need to adjust them shifter and throttle cables brother! Costs nothing and will save that lower unit. Don't be afraid to shift it into gear quickly. That's how they operate 👍

Cleet word of advice. If you want maximum top end. trim the bad boy up while boating until it starts to cavitate. Then bump her down slightly and you'll get maximum performance.

That was a pretty good deal; I don’t know about US prices but here in Greece, the motor alone would’ve been worth that amount. New gelcoat, interior refit, screen, new seats… for another 1000-1500 depending on how much you do yourself, I reckon you’d have a great fun boat on your hands. It's probably a completely wrong cable
probably tuned/modified to race only, some of them simply disliked shifting into reverse if setup tight for best forward control. but who knows, it could just be an abortion.
after hearing it more, something is very silly there, maybe the wrong control for it, bad control or shifter/throttle cables swapped?
Naw that’s how Mercury’s are they grind just have to shift fast the reason it is moving so fast just clutched in is because it has a big speed prop on it hence why it’s slow planing off . It’s not idled to high it’s just moving a ton of water put a power prop on it and it will move slow clutched in !

You kinda just have to bang it into reverse with a mercury, you can’t put it into reverse slow
You can adjust the reverse and forward gear engagement from the motor, there is a proper process for it, shouldnt take you too long. Will help with the grinding of the gears.

yes, agreed, if you lack experience with a fast outboard motor boat itcan hurt you real fast, I've seen 18 ft bass boats trimmed out to high and blow over. once was in February and the water was damn cold, we all jumped in our boats to go to him and didn't trim the motor dawn and did like this boat of cletes, just poured the gas out the carbs in front

His tournament boat in '99 (I think) was a Bumblebee with a 200 FICHT on it and it's the only boat he's had try to come over on him from lifting so high. Hot foot saved him that day. Still the fastest boat he's ever run as his personal boat but the Bass Cat Cougar he's running now with the new 250 V8 Mercury is the second fastest he's had. I'm sure he's happy to not be getting passed nearly as much running the Bass Cat after running Ranger (mostly 520's) for 20 years. As a bass boat owner myself I cringe at how some run theirs and am glad I'm not riding with them driving like some of them do.
100% gotta learn that trim. And a hot foot just might save your life one day.

Defiantly need to adjust the shift and throttle cables, bleed the steering, and try trimming that motor all the way in before jumping on plane then trimming out as you increase in speed. The motor could prolly come down a couple holes on that manual jackplate as well
Cletus, you need to see a person that knows about outboard racing, these aren't jet boats, these boats will hurt you if you don't know what you are doing,let off the gas slow,with the prop torque sometimes they pitch sideways, trim it under when you take off, all the way on the throttle, it might cavitation a little but it will get on plane quicker, you have a boat that you need instruction on it
All boat motors smoke when you crank em! They’re all running on mixed fuel if there older engines like that one. It’s a V6, two stroke engine which they no longer make anymore. The new motors are 4 stroke and V8 if you buy a new mercury that’s big. Mariner and Mercury are the same thing basically! I actually like the 2 stroke, V6s myself but the EPA made these engine manufactures stop building engines in this configuration because of the unburnt fuel and emissions. The new 4 stroke, V8s are much heavier than the older 2 stroke, V6s. The older engines would jump of the hole much faster because they are so much lighter but the new engines do run much faster top end. Most of your drag boat racers still run the 2 stroke, V6 Mercury motor. However, everything will eventually go to the heavier 4 stroke, V8 because that’s all they make, the new motors last longer, and they’re making much more power now. Mercury has a 450 V8 now, heck they even have a 600 4 stroke, V12 now that weighs like 1600-1800 lbs if I remember correctly. Boat motors have evolved a lot over the past few years now that they have went to 4 stroke engines.
Same with motorcycles and other powersports. The 2 strokes basically perform as well as 4 strokes with twice the displacement and weigh much less.
you can still buy 2t outboards.... epa never said you couldn't make and sell 2t it's just far easier to get the emission standards with 4t

Just a tip, I have had boats with similar hulls and speed and have had to add weight to the bow to prevent "Chine walking" before. Used a sand bag or 2, some of these boats have the fuel tank in the bow for this very reason
rarely would anyone add weight *especially at the bow*. adjust balance via setback and also different props produce different bow lift, etc. additionally, chine walk is all in the motor mounts, steering, and drivers ability. a boat must be well setup and learn to be flown.
@@SuperWaterskiboy Well obviously changing other dynamics of the boat would have some affect on chine walk, but for all practical purposes adding a little weight or shifting weight around is used in almost every Motorsport known to man.
Even James has added weight to his car to prevent wheelies instead of going back and resetting up the car.
V bottoms of that size are super sketchy above 70mph no matter what you do. They want to veer one way or another. Tunnel hull is best on smooth water.

When you take off be trimmed perfectly level, flor it and simultaneously trim out and turn right and then left slightly and it will plane out like a champ! Outboard drag boats are a blast! But launching out the hole is a technique
