    Singapore was lucky to have Mr.Lee to guide them during initial years. Today's countries are missing Politicians like Mr.Lee. Farsighted, fair, honest, he was one of a kind.

      @@earlysda Oh I believe even Jesus would have accepted him, for he never tried to force his belief onto people, he even made an example of a samaritan (a heretic) as a good moral action to be followed. I think most Christians and Muslims misinterpreted the message, it's not about spreading the practice of worship, it's about moral guidance and principles that need to be followed.

    What he said at @7:35 is a gem. Sensible, Sensitive but Firm government will ride this patch. Soft government trying to accommodate everybody will lead to a big mistake. Indian leaders, specially on the Center right & left, should listen this. He did not compromise with secularism, rather he became a stronger proponent of Secularism by treating everyone equally.

      Unfortunately caste system is there, but constitutional solution is also there. It has yielded results and we are moving in right direction not reached yet, but in right direction. Also caste/race discrimination is a global phenomenon across all cultures, Hindus are no different there.

    I'm from the UK this man is spot on with this ,live and let live,keep your own religious beliefs under the rule of a firm fair and seperate governance that gives no favour to any.Anyone who wants otherwise wants to enforce their beliefs on you.Those type of religious people just want their own religious dictatorship and are totally unfit for public office

      Every day you enact your worldview on other people by interacting with them. The only way to “live and let live” is to live on an island alone, then you truly can do whatever you want. Otherwise you have to have boundaries and rules of conduct if there was another person. Because both people can’t do what they want without infringing upon the other. The idea of a Christian proselytizing is similar to a mother who cares deeply for her son. If you love someone you will be angry when they do something stupid to hurt themselves, such as abusing opiates, etc. This is the same with Christianity. The Christian sees people living selfishly, and by that hurting others, themselves, and most importantly God who desires the best at all times for all people. And to live selfishly is stupid, and unreal. Because the Law of God is simply a description of reality. Yea verily if you jump off the roof a building you will become paste.

Its the standard operadi of old British and Jesuits forces when they took over a city or country, they sent in the missionaries. The end result is the destruction of all cultures and traditions. Christianity is at best a religion made in middle ages. 1000 years ago, you barely had handwriting and even calendar, let alone write the bible. U r a new kid on the block, just like Judaism and Islam.

      @@thealkymyst - You are right. Humans are not the Creator, so someone who thinks humans should be put before the Creator doesn't know the Creator. However, I think I understand what that person was trying to say, though, who said "place humanity foremost before any gods or religion." I think that person was trying to say a person shouldn't let their religion make them be hateful or cold towards others who have a different religion or who have no religion. The thing is, that's what Jesus taught. Jesus taught to even "Love your enemy" & even pray for your enemy. He taught love "others as yourself."

    Man this guy is good. Only someone with a deep understanding of society can be aware of things like this. I can see why he created such a successful non-democratic meritocratic capitalistic country. Sad that he is no longer here. You dont need a multiparty system like democracy to be successful just a great leader who is aware and who the people love.

People's Action Party has won every election from 1959 to today which is even stranger. No other party hs ever won since 1959. Why dont you go and read eedyt.

    This guy makes sense. There is a reason why we separate church and state. When one religion claims to have the only path to enlightenment, heaven, valhalla, etc. and that it is the only universal truth, it becomes a danger to others. This is why I left organized religion long ago. It's a crutch. Not the truth.

      These are Master/Slave religions - born when Kings ruled with an iron fist
      Ancient people living under these Kings/Dictators used them as a template for God
      Hence a King like God sitting on his throne in the Heavens
      Heaven is his Kingdom
      To please him one must get down on one's knees, beg, grovel, sing his praises, swear eternal loyalty & obedience
      And of course no King/Dictator would tolerate allegiance to another and so the hate and threats against all others
      Think of living in Russia under Putin or North Korea today!
      That was the life back than and the ancients came up with such Gods!
      What is frightening is to see today's best and brightest blindly following these primitive ideas of God

    For many people who ask what religion is Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, he has just mentioned it in this video. He is a Buddhist (around 4:09) who strongly support secularism, and takes a very practical approach on all religions.

      Actually that was and is Buddhismus. And you cannot actually consider it religion, but a specific, rather spiritual view. Compare with Abrahamic religions (pro and contra list). Lee Kaun Yew is the future. If there will be future.

    I am born in a Hindu family but had no specific interest in religions. I started my schooling in a convent, but after a while, I was put in a government school.
    Every day, after the National anthem was played I used to draw a cross on me. My friend a church-going Christian asked me which Church I go to. I told him I don't go to Church. He asked me why I draw a cross after the assembly. My reply was that I may be a Christian and I needed to check with my mother who was a Professor as she would probably know.
    It turned out that in the Convent I started drawing the cross after assembly, I used to draw the cross and my mother has seen me draw the cross even in temples.
    "Why didn't you tell me"? I asked.
    "Young children's minds should not be poisoned by these differences."
    From that day I had more respect for Hinduism.

It‘s also the reason why homosapiens are able to win the compeition against other species. That’s because the strong have to care for the weak and to get the weak to become stronger thus improving the rest of the human race. Of course in extreme circumstances definitely is to give more resources to the strong, but in general circumstances it‘s the strong that have the responsibility to take care of the weak. Of course I am not talking about sharing resources equally here.

The important word here is might and genetics does change with time although it‘s much harder and if you talking about genetics what determines strong and weak is the context of the situation. Tutoring also ensures the strong continue to work harder and not rest on their laurels. Very seldom you have the strong maintain in a position of strength throughout the entireity of their lives same with the weak.       Believe me, if church and state unites, the church in charge will come up with some reason to persecute some poor minority believers. A Republic was set up in order to protect the minorities as equal.       I understand what you say. I went to Mecca 2 times myself, only after adulthood it becomes clearer that I can control & guide only myself. Ppl have various understandings on one particular sentence or strings of sentences; it is so easy to become fanatic and in THAT PROCESS, you'd ignore rationalism and hurt people left and right.     In India , all temples including Sikhs ,Jains ,Hindus, Buddhist r under govt control while church and mosques ,madrasas r free hence the result is that :
    1) after Govt of India , 2nd largest land owner is the Catholic and The 3rd largest is the Waqf board a Muslim personal law board
    2) the Muslims have their own personal shariah court and churches their own ..
    3) the land scam of the Churches is enormous with no transparency thus un-named cemeteries r rising 2 times the normal speed leading to massive problems in governance and causing constant friction while Hindus r not even allowed to do a small Yatra or a religious procession in Christian or Muslim dominated area .

The problem with this is the rise of extremist toxic Hindus (like terrorist ISIS in middle east) who wants pure Hindu state, they want Abrahamic religions to leave, they terrorize them by forming vigilante groups who "protects" cows and sacred animals but in reality uses it as a cover to beat and assault Muslims, christians and Jews. Most cases are of Muslims since they are the second largest minority. There is also the rise of Hindu priest who compel their fellow followers to "protect" their women by Isolating Anyone of Abrahamic faith, mostly Muslim again. They don't allow any of that group to marry one of their own. The entire case is dangerous and hate fueled bullying.

There were numerous talented and intelligent individuals who contributed to Singapore's economic success. While LKY possessed oratory skills, it was the collective efforts of others that allowed him to shine on the stage as a lawyer and politician. Propaganda strategically positioned him after he gradually removed the pioneers from power. His scheming and authoritarian rule are not something to take pride in. Don't live with your eyes closed.

      I lived in and around Singapore for about ten years, in the early seventies, I was a young anti authority Australian but made an exception for Mr Lee with, what I deemed to be, his draconian rules. With the Vietnam war so close and Singapore in need of direction, Mr Lee used what he called the Sledge Hammer effect. No Communism, that meant no long hair, no tattoos, no more rock music in night clubs. Tow Bombs were detonated after being discovered, one in top of a coconut tree and the other in a roadside gutter. There was a photo of the coconut tree blowing up, in the Straights times. Myself and friends believed that Mr Lee arranged for these bombs to be planted to give reason why Singaporeans should be concerned about communism. And the issue you with long hair and tattoos was, as I believed, to prevent Malaysian youth from being an influence on society. Wrong, I know, but I was and have always been sceptical of any authority. One amazing experience I had with Mr Lee's sledge hammer effect was when he announced that there would be no more honking of car horns and no more erratic driving on Singaporean roads. The following day I caught a taxi into the CBD, Orchard Rd and was in a state of shock. No honking of horns no indiscretions, no impatient passing and cutting in front of other drivers. This to me, was an indication of total respect for LKY.

    The dangers in principle are always the same no matter the form: What is the benefit of religion to people? To raise their standards as people. What is the danger of religion to people? To stop functioning as the preceding and/or to become a system of stagnation. What is the benefit of a given Political System to people? To aid their living and life chances. What is the danger of a political system: To corrupt them and or oppress them.

    Thanks for the video. It's scary how LKY nailed it when these comments were made decades ago. Religion is a sensitive issue and in this PC climate today his words would have been a no go.. looking at the comment thread here definitely scared me a little... "live and let live" is the most important thing, and on a larger scale the separation of religion and governance. Everyone can believe that their religion is the absolute truth but the problem comes when someone impose their religious beliefs to others or even persecutes others because something is wrong in their eyes. We see in many countries when religion gets mixed into politics it gets really ugly and the minorities who believe in another religion suffers... hopefully Singaporeans and Singapore can be sensible and can balance their religious beliefs with tolerance for others because no religion has the absolute claim to all the truth of the world... Peace

      Strangely, the most persecuted groups in the world, are the true Christians. (there is a nominal group who are Christian in name only). It will continue to be persecuted and hounded, accused and matyred till the end of age. China is an example, but today, Christians exist in the millions. Today the news in Manipur, India is very sad. Many tribal groups who are mainly Christians had their churches and homes looted and burnt, with silent consent from the government. Is it in the news? No. And it's not for political but for religious reasons.
      The Myanmar tribal Christian groups are also suffering the same fate from the Junta. See the thousands of Myanmar refugees spilling into neighbouring countries - Malaysia, for example. If you have worked among the refugees, you can hear their sad tales. Malaysia is under constant threat of losing peace and harmony because of politicians using race and religion to get power. We too long for the tolerant, peaceful years of long ago that LKY speak about, where our friends were from all races and religions. We formed many happy relationships

    Often many people forget what it means to be secular. It doesn't mean to be irreligious and it doesn't mean to attack Abrahamic faiths specifically. The concept is perfectly used to keep religion and its values away from public policy and the development of a nation. Yet many who claim to be secular or against secularism fail to understand what it truly means. In the rise of Islamism, anti-religion, and Christian, Buddhist, and Hindu nationalism, a free society not dictated or influenced by a certain group of citizens at the expense of others are lost simply to words through the danger religious tribalism. This is what Singapore has beautifully and effectively been able to overcome. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew was truly, one of the greatest leaders in modern history.

    Wonderful observation about the tolerance inherent in Hinduism and Buddhism and how the steamrolling that Islam and Christianity do will destroy the peace on this world. Hats off to this great man.

    In my view Lee Kuan Yew is one of the greatest political leaders in the modern world.
    He kept a multi religious society secular, transformed it from a third world to a first world society. And all this in just a single generation

    Singapore was lucky to have Mr.Lee Kwan Yew to guide them during initial years and bloom in later years. He made sure Singapore remains in safe hands.

    Lee Kuan Yew was wrong about the Christians. The US constitution and Declaration of Independence were crafted and established upon Judeo Christian values (from the bible) as the bedrock, from which principles and belief systems are being derived through the founding fathers who were also religious people such as John Adams. One famous sentence of the Declaration stated... “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This is an appeal from the founding fathers to the God of the bible invoking a higher authority for their freedom and inalienable rights which the King of England had stepped out of his bounds of right to rule.
    What am I trying to bring across? Singapore, to a great extent, has imitated the West in establishing laws and governance of the country and with great success. This can only be attributed to also following the same fundamentals of the Judeo-Christian values. (An example is the death penalty. Buddhists place great emphasis on non-violence and compassion on all life so capital punishment is not condoned. However, the bible taught on capital punishment for heinous crimes ~ The punishment must fit the crime.) I hardly believe SG government's moral code is plucked from the sky or that the lawmakers derive their laws from Buddhist scriptural canon such as the Vinaya text, the sutras, the Tripitaka, Abhidhamma, the Digha Nikaya or the Pali Canon. Heaven forbids that they should start making laws drawn on "divine guidance" from the Buddhist tantric and apocryphal scriptures.
    Jesus said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” -Matthew 22:36-40
    "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you." -John 15:12.
    Christians are called to live a higher standard by Jesus, that we are to love one another just as He loved us. If you know how Jesus loved and that Christians are commanded to imitate him, then you will come to a conclusion that is there is absolutely no danger in Christianity.
    Even though Thomas Jefferson had defended separation of church and state, it really did not mean the church staying out of government but that the government should stay out of the church. A government that is influenced by Judeo-Christians values will go a long way in governing the country well.
    Unfortunately, Lee Kuan Yew is dead so there is no chance to let him know that he was wrong.

      Lee Kwan Yew was not wrong. Historical evidence proves he was right ( the Crusades in the Middle Age,the colonialism in the 19th and 20th centuries). And particularly look at what Jesus said in the Bible "To those enemies of mine who do not want me to be king over them, bring them here and kill them in front of me" (Luca 19-20)

    Believe it or not but when I grew up in Australia in the 70's Lee Kwan Yew was greatly admired as being way better than any of our own leaders.

    Christianity spread as the Spaniards landed on the shore brandishing swords and the holy cross in each hand shouting "In the name of Jesus we proclaim this land to be ours!" and soon began killing the unsuspecting natives who had gathered to see them arrive in curiousity. This happened in Africa, the Americas but not in India, China and other SE Asian nations, where the civilisations predate the Christian theological records.

      A study of secularism will quickly show that secularism is basically Western Christianity with the word "god" crossed out.
      Read "Dominion" by Tom Holland to understand what this means.

      @@redmatters9318 Well as an agnostic myself I can tell you your prediction is doomed to failure. Studies have shown that atheists can't bother themselves to have relationships, let alone babies. They have also shown that religion is in the genes. All atheism has done has separated the atheists from the religious and then made the atheists go extinct. We're seeing this all over the secular world - Japan and China particularly badly affected. Seems that atheism is the best thing that ever happened to religion.
      The future of humanity is a religious one, and probably quite a fundamentalist religious future at that.
