My hot take is that Carter's legacy is going to improve, at least in the eyes of the public, in the coming decades. With faith and trust in government institutions on the decline, politicians who hold true to their political and personal values are going to become more and more prized, in my view. Carter pretty much exemplifies that, and so I predict he'll be looked on more favorably for it down the line. My personal take on his legacy right now is that the guy was doing the best he could when he was dealt a bad hand. A lot of the stuff he gets flak for (gas prices, Iran Hostage Crisis, etc.) was stuff he really was trying on, and there was just no good short-term solution. RIP to a good man.
Born in Iran, I was a teenager during his presidency. He is the earliest president that I remember. I remember him as an honest and dignified man. And I think he and Obama are among the most intelligent, honest and polite presidents with great integrity, RIP❤
It's the struggle between character and charisma. In the US, we most often end up choosing the candidates with more charisma whether or not they also have good character. It happens in life with regular people as well. So many people choose friends poorly because they select for charisma first, and while there are people with both charisma and character, if someone is charismatic, many people don't seem to notice as easily what type of person they actually are. It's kind of sad, really.
Definitely a man whose Presidency has had a more positive reception since its ending than during its own time. His legacy will be surely largely judged by his actions post his holding of the office, which seems to have been one of the most successful of any President. I’m very happy for him that he got to live to see his Presidency be re-evaluated. Even as a non-American, it’s really hard not to respect his boundless optimism and quality of character. Seemingly the closest thing you ever got to having Mr. Rogers as the President. And maybe one of the last men actually worthy of the post, depending on your mileage.
I realized yesterday that, when Jimmy Carter was born in 1924, Robert Todd Lincoln would still be kicking around for a couple more years. It's nuts to me to think about how, for a brief time, Jimmy Carter existed in the same time as a man who was one of the last witnesses to Robert E. Lee's surrender to Ulysses S. Grant.
Carter was the first president I remember, and I hardly knew anything about his policies when I was a kid; growing up in a conservative state, mostly I only heard jokes about him from school classmates. One thing I do remember was his emphasis on reducing gasoline consumption, which was way ahead of societal trends - the country (and especially the oil industry) balked hard against any restrictions on driving and it would be decades before we accepted the need to reduce carbon emissions. Everything else I learned about his presidency came much later in life … primarily from your channel, Mr. Beat.

You should mention him supplying then bypassing congress to supply arms to Indonesia during its occupation of East Timor & that he increased aid to Israel dramatically which they used to invade Lebanon in 78 and 82.
One of my new interests is in the Carter-Callaway rivalry of the 1960s (especially the 1966 gubernatorial election), as Jimmy Carter and Bo Callaway (1937-2014) are interesting figures to compare. While The Carters’ presence in state politics dated back to James Sr.’s election to Sumter County in the House (he died six months in), the Callaways were prominent textile manufacturers up in LaGrange, and by the 1960s were operating the much-beloved Callaway Gardens in the area. Carter went to Annapolis and served in the Navy; Callaway went to West Point and fought in Korea. Carter stayed in the Democratic Party as it evolved and served in state politics, while Callaway became a Republican in 1964 and would be the first US Congressman from our state of that party since Reconstruction. The two had clashed enough that when Callaway decided to run for governor in 1966, Carter decided to run against him instead of for Congress as previously announced. While Callaway was the Republican nominee, Carter was placed as the moderate between Arnall and Maddox in the Democratic primary and lost to the latter. Callaway would end up being the Secretary of the Army from 1973-75. My mother got to meet both people, Callaway as a journalist and Carter when she and I both went to Plains to see him in 2016. If André Dutra ever makes a video on the early political career of Carter, the rivalry with Callaway ought to be mentioned.
Carter set the stage for practically everything of consequence Reagan did. From rolling back the new deal programs to the Contras, Carter was the embodiment of a rightward turn in American politics being cemented in the wake of Nixon.
He was definitely a better person then president. He did so much more and better out of the office then in the office. Building houses and helping people around the world.
You know having to have the flag at half mast to honor someone other than himself eduring his inauguration is going to get Trump pissed. It's one of those little petty things that will set a narcissist off
Reagan’s people were actively working against the hostages being brought home and made sure the Iranians waited to release them after Reagan took over. At least that’s what I’ve heard.
"He was president a long time ago" - thanks a lot Mr. Beat! I already know I'm old so I didn't need it to be drilled into my head! 🤣🤣🤣 I personally think Carter was president at a time when so much was going wrong in this country and there wasn't much he could have done. He had to deal with post Vietnam syndrome, the Nixon resignation, continued de-industrialization, oil crisis and stagflation. The hostage crisis was the final straw. The Camp David Accords were definitely the high point of his presidency. His legacy definitely improved over the years due to his work with Habitat for Humanity and other charitable organizations.
About Carter being born in a hospital, from what I know, at that time it was more of a sign of a working class upbringing than being rich. Back then hospitals were nasty disease ridden death traps so rich people would hire midwives and give birth at home while poor people who couldn’t afford that would go to the hospital instead
39:30 Mr. Beat is correct in his assessment that Joe Biden, similar to Jimmy Carter, did struggle with their communication abilities and their abilities to connect with the public on certain issues and that did play into how the public perceived him as president. I think he's being a little unfair and hyperbolic when he says Biden "can barely talk." Yes, Biden is not the world's greatest communicator and there are plenty of moments where he stuttered or mumbled his way through speaking, but Biden can hold his own from time to time. Look at his State of the Union address back on March 7th this year. He did so well that Republicans claimed his staff pumped him up with drugs before the speech.
well, this is debatable. People have their different opinions on Biden, and as someone who voted for Biden because I absolutely despise Trump...yeah, he isn't great at speaking. Sorry. But your opinion is valid as well. 🤷
Jimmy Carter's election was the first I remember from my childhood. I was 8 yrs old when he was elected. He is the only president I have gotten into an argument defending. I loved him. Jimmy Carter was too good for the USA, and the world paid for our rejection of him and his values.
I'm a year younger than Amy Carter, and I remember at 9 years old, being so excited about a girl about my age who was living in the White House. And she had the cutest kitty. Lol
From what I’ve heard about Jimmy Carter, he comes off as a George Bailey in a world of Mr. Potters (with one about to become president…again). Wish there were more like him.
A modern president that you can be proud of. A full life serving the public, we owed Mr. Carter, the up most respect for being a moral man with principles. What a legacy! What a life! RIP President Carter
Reagan's contribution to the release of the Iran hostages was being inaugurated, as the hostages were released that day. The Iranians had resolved noy to release the hostages until Carter was out of office. I became eligible to vote in 1967. Of any of my presidential votes, I'm proudest of the vote I cast for Jimmy Carter
I am old enough to know about those gas prices. Didn't drive til 1982, two yrs into Reagan's first term & after the Iran oil embargo gas was $1.25 doubled in two years and expensive for a high school graduate. Saudi did it in '73 & Iran did it in '79.
Reagan is why we have the worst wealth inequality in the world. Can't believe people still defend this man after the "trickle-down" still hasn't happened yet 😕
I really have respect and admiration due to his gentlemanly attitude and having tried so hard to improve the lives of those who have it worse than him in both the USA and around the world. Rest in peace Jimmy Carter, you've been a good man! 🇺🇸❤️🙌🔥
Can you please remake the video on how every president in american history died, including their last words? This time, include Jimmy Carter if we ever find out his last words or not.
@SplittTwig Trump mused during his first term of being "President for Life," and I'm down for that - like Harding, Harrison, or FDR. For him, it's either die in office, or sure die in confinement.
I remember when he took his vacation on a riverboat going down the Mississippi River. I tried to look up the itenary on the internet. But it looks like he never completed the journey.
I'm a strong advocate that we should immediately try federal officials for crimes against humanity upon leaving office; hold them accountable for the messed up stuff they pretty much all do (specifically the "I had a choice and did it anyway" stuff). Carter might be one of the few who wouldn't at least warrant life in prison, which somehow feels like a win.
Mr. Beat you pretty cool and all, but that singing reminds me of that episode from that Beetlejuice cartoon, where Prince Vince wanted to be the Prince of rock and roll😦
27:30 I will say about this, the 2020-2022 inflation statistically matches with the 70s inflation. The peak of the 70s inflation in fact matches perfectly with the 2022 peak. Now I didn't live through the 70s one but I did live through the 2020-2022 inflation though I do also live in a high cost of living state (ny) so it could be that certain states felt the 2020-2022 inflation more than others such as Nebraska.

I think Carter is way better than people admit. Reagan set the stage for massive wealth inequality. Carter appointed Volker, not Reagan
Carter set the stage for practically everything of consequence Reagan did. From rolling back the new deal programs to the Contras, Carter was the embodiment of a rightward turn in American politics being cemented in the wake of Nixon.
I don't think Jimmy would ever make it on my top ten presidents, but he'd definitely make the honourable mentions because he's just a cool dude.
Jimmy Carter was the best human being to serve as President of the United States.
He was definitely a better person then president. He did so much more and better out of the office then in the office. Building houses and helping people around the world.
You know having to have the flag at half mast to honor someone other than himself eduring his inauguration is going to get Trump pissed. It's one of those little petty things that will set a narcissist off
Great conversation about Jimmy Carter, Beat!
Aloha 😊🤙🏼👏🏼
Best man to ever hold the office of the presidency. May him and billy enjoy some cold ones for eternity.
Reagan’s people were actively working against the hostages being brought home and made sure the Iranians waited to release them after Reagan took over. At least that’s what I’ve heard.
Thank you. It was not right how this was swept under the rug here.
For those who want to look closer into it, John Connally was the name associated with it.
Seems like I’ve heard about tactics like that in more recent political news somewhere…
"He was president a long time ago" - thanks a lot Mr. Beat! I already know I'm old so I didn't need it to be drilled into my head! 🤣🤣🤣
I personally think Carter was president at a time when so much was going wrong in this country and there wasn't much he could have done.
So, Jimmy Carter was a true Washington outsider.
39:30 Mr. Beat is correct in his assessment that Joe Biden, similar to Jimmy Carter, did struggle with their communication abilities and their abilities to connect with the public on certain issues and that did play into how the public perceived him as president. I think he's being a little unfair and hyperbolic when he says Biden "can barely talk."
Yes, Biden is not the world's greatest communicator and there are plenty of moments where he stuttered or mumbled his way through speaking, but Biden can hold his own from time to time.
Young Jimmy saved my city and thousands of lives from a nuclear disaster. RIP.
Cannot wait until i get up to reading about Carter.
A modern president that you can be proud of. A full life serving the public, we owed Mr. Carter, the up most respect for being a moral man with principles. What a legacy! What a life! RIP President Carter
0:40 and you _still_ are a young man. I'm nearly the same age, we're not old yet lol
Love andre!!!!
RIP Jimmy Carter a man of greatness
Rest in peace, President Carter. 🇺🇸. My condolences to his family.
Carter legacy is mostly positive for me, he definitely has a better reputation than Ronald Regan in my eyes.
Reagan is why we have the worst wealth inequality in the world. Can't believe people still defend this man after the "trickle-down" still hasn't happened yet 😕
Mr beat we need you in 2025
I really have respect and admiration due to his gentlemanly attitude and having tried so hard to improve the lives of those who have it worse than him in both the USA and around the world.
Rest in peace Jimmy Carter, you've been a good man! 🇺🇸❤️🙌🔥
Can you please remake the video on how every president in american history died, including their last words? This time, include Jimmy Carter if we ever find out his last words or not.
Yea I have friend who shared a bday with Carter ironically they passed a week apart.
I think how people rate President Carter says a lot about how they view The Office of The President, and what their role is in America
To quote agent K,
“He is not dead,
He just went home”.
Mr. Beat, I asked you a question around the end of the stream, do you know Phineas and Ferb yes or no?
Also, RIP Jimmy Carter, he had a great life.
I look forward to your summation on the legacy of Donald Trump, and I hope I don't have to wait long to see it.
Well. you’re gonna have to wait 4 years. Hopefully no more no less….
@SplittTwig Trump mused during his first term of being "President for Life," and I'm down for that - like Harding, Harrison, or FDR. For him, it's either die in office, or sure die in confinement.
I guess I’m the same age as Mr Beat’s parents 😊
I remember when he took his vacation on a riverboat going down the Mississippi River. I tried to look up the itenary on the internet. But it looks like he never completed the journey.
I'm a strong advocate that we should immediately try federal officials for crimes against humanity upon leaving office; hold them accountable for the messed up stuff they pretty much all do (specifically the "I had a choice and did it anyway" stuff). Carter might be one of the few who wouldn't at least warrant life in prison, which somehow feels like a win.
Holy crap, great to see you in the comments. I hope you've been well.
I worked at the Ford museum.
To those who have done so much for America and the world. Let us not forget them. Thank U for that 💚
Mr. Beat you pretty cool and all, but that singing reminds me of that episode from that Beetlejuice cartoon, where Prince Vince wanted to be the Prince of rock and roll😦
R.I.P Mr President
Rip Jimmy
2024 Presidential Election video?
Haircut? Employment?
Coming in February!
I hope u reach 10,000,000 subs by the end of 2025.
You should update how each presidents died.
I was going to say mrbeast love the background in your face cam
27:30 I will say about this, the 2020-2022 inflation statistically matches with the 70s inflation. The peak of the 70s inflation in fact matches perfectly with the 2022 peak. Now I didn't live through the 70s one but I did live through the 2020-2022 inflation though I do also live in a high cost of living state (ny) so it could be that certain states felt the 2020-2022 inflation more than others such as Nebraska.
🇦🇷 argentina....my country, my country!!!! Lol..... sad to be associated with inflation but...itrs true.
Great man who was ever President
A great man, an okay President, and an even greater humanitarian.
RIP Jimmy Carter
Amazing president actually if you look into it.
r.i.p. jimmy
He lived thru the Great Depression, WWII, the assassination of Kennedy, saw the first man walk on the moon, 9/11
But he never saw Ronaldo score a World Cup KO goal 🕊️
Oh yeah Tip O Neil the guy that originally sold out the dems and helped Reaganomics ……good job Tip
Just because you are pro-life, that does not mean that you have to ban abortions
1976 had been the first US presidental election I followed as an Austrian starting Gymnasium that year. The "weakness" is a product of GOP propaganda.
So did Jimmy Carter beat wherner von buran's Record?
One of the greatest Americans in history, but a mediocre president.
My thoughts on Jimmy Carter, he was a decent human being, just incompetent as a president.
Jimmy Carter was the best president of my lifetime, and an even greater post-president.
