Rest in peace, Jimmy Carter. My grandparents and all of my mom’s family, except for my mom, decided/had to move from MN to Texas because of the inflation via Carter presidency. They were not wealthy, initially had a farm in ND, and once no longer affordable, grandpa started working “odd jobs” to pay the bills family of 5 kids in Whapeton, MN. That’s where my parents met, and my other Grandpa, denied him a loan (broker), because “why would you ask if you can’t even afford it, Ken?”. My grandfather was a faithful man to the end , never gave up on his family, and turned out okay. That was humiliating for my grandpa and to this day my mom won’t forget that. For James Earl Carter Jr.
a minute after midnight,
October 1st 2024,
President Jimmy Carter
today is 100 years old
in 1977, 47 years ago,
when he was 53 years old,
he became the 39th president of the USA,
the year before, in Memphis,
I wrote a collection of poems that, in 1977,
became my very first publication,
Bicentennial Blues
in 1976, when these poems were written,
the USA was celebrating
the 200 anniversary of their independence
and I was a student at Memphis State University
well, I dedicated that book to President Carter
and through US Ambassador to The Bahamas,
Bill Schwartz, I sent the president a copy
what a delight it was - what a pleasant surprise,
to receive a letter of appreciation, signed,
from the president himself
how considerate- how gracious he was…
I was 22 when those poems were written,
I am 70 years old now,
and I have recently published my 32nd book
a lot of water certainly has gone under the bridge
what a miracle it is that Jimmy Carter is still with us -
centenarian - how blessed he is - how pure in heart
well that letter he sent me, 46 years ago,
is in a frame, hanging upon a wall here in my house
wow, he has lived longer than Queen Elizabeth II,
longer than her husband, Prince Phillip -
longer than my best friend’s husband
who, in February, this year, died,
11 weeks shy of his 99th birthday
thanks be to God
for those people and for those things that last
my friend whose husband died earlier this year
and I, share a friendship which goes
all the way back to MSU, all the way
back to Memphis in the early 70s…
thanks be to God for the things which sustain -
for stability in our lives -
for the stability of the earth we are on,
that we rely upon
as steady and as stable as it is
in spite of its orbiting the sun
at 1,140 miles per minute, and spinning
upon its axis at 1,000 MPH…
all the whirling and whirling
that whirls us into being and whirls us out again
happy birthday, Mr. President,
who has been a witness and involved
in this human event for an entire century -
you are special indeed

Where's the USS Jimmy Carter aircraft carrier? USS Truman, USS Roosevelt, USS Washington, USS Truman, USS Ford, USS Reagan, USS Bush, USS John F. Kennedy, USS Eisenhower, USS Lincoln,...
but no USS Nixon, no USS Biden, no USS Clinton? No USS Obama?
No.... some POTUSs don't get a boat, even if they were in the Navy.
My grandpa became a trucker, and unfortunately this presidency is why I don’t get to spend valuable time with the people that I love so much, and could’ve grown so much from. Jimmy Carter was the president from hell, as I see it. I think he was an ignorant man with many “good” intentions. God bless them, and I pray for their place in heaven.
It was reported back in the summer that President Carter was fighting to live long enough to vote for Kamala. It had to be very disappointing that a twice impeached, convicted felon was reelected.
RIP
Trump2024!!!
@@DrewHanks2083Even in a moment of grief of a wonderful president cold blooded souls like you have to make political comments. Jimmy Carter did more good for America then Trump ever could dream of.
@@RamblinWreck-y9w trump is the Logan Paul of politics
@@EpicAndrew97 IDGAF if he's the Mike Tyson of politics. I'd take 50 Jimmy Carter's then 1 Donald Trump.
The work President Carter couldn't do in the White House, became a Better legacy of his lifetime after he left the White House. 💜
He came here to do what he was created to do and so... he did! Was he perfect as a president, no, but none of us are! He did much for many and gave of himself for others! Rest and peace to you, President Carter.
From Carter to Trump, what happened to America?
I'm glad that I'm not the Only one asking that same question. How did the United States of America became THIS divisive in the span of half a century?!?
right president at the wrong time
Just like Herbert Hoover
Can’t wait to see 60 minuets tonight as a fan of Carter
As a life-long Republican, I have nothing but the respect for President Carter.
Thank you for your service to America and to the world!
He wasnt at fault for the oil crisis, but americans didnt care and voted him out....
Jimmy Carter was one of the best presidents we’ve ever had. Considering the circumstances and his resistance to “nepotism” what other president can say that?
Congratulations to the interviewer who found a dozen different ways of asking "were you a bad president?"
I only came to know about this man’s legacy after him passing. It’s great to see the divided political spectrum sharing positive things about him. Looking forward to reading more about him. As an Irish person, he even made a difference in my country - along with so many others. What a positive person
So President Carter got a lot of work done in four years, geez... sound familiar?? President Biden got even more done in his time. Now President Carter's accomplishments were done before President Biden, but BOTH deserve kudos for helping Americans, not themselves. Unlike the orange buffoon.
I wish Luigi could’ve saved us from Trump tbh, we need VANCE, not TRUMP
Very humble down to earth full of love RIP President Jimmy Carter. His mother was a nurse in India and she loved India. President Carter had a good feeling for India too. Indians love president Carter. 🙏
Refreshing
A wonderful human being …both he and his wife. A life v well lived !
What a brave man, he had the character to raise his voice against things he thought were wrong, like the 2003 Irak War with his letter to UN and former president Bush.
He was so nice
R.I.P
Rest in Peace President Jimmy Carter your legacy will live on forever
Thanks, Good piece on arter.
God bless you Mr. Carter. What a passionate advocate for the people.
He was the last USA president who saw the downfalls of the Middle East countries royalties...
Jimmy Carter is what ALL politicians need to aspire to brand we private citizens need to follow his lead in regard to honesty, decency and humanitarian service
true humanitarian 🇺🇲🙏
Good man
Rest in Peace.
Jimmy Carter was cursed with a Oligarchy that hated him. They fought him every step of the way.
Jimmy Carter sounds a heck of a lot more articulate than Joe Biden has sounded these past 4 years. There’s not even a comparison… night and day difference…
What a great man!
