    Filmmaker: Sanjiev Johal
2020 was the United States on a precipice. COVID-19 claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans; the racial justice movement ignited by the police murder of unarmed Black man, George Floyd, further divided a fractured nation; and Donald Trump's desperate last stand marked the death throes of an embattled, embittered presidency. 2020 lay bare the contradictions and conflict at the heart of the American project.
In The Big Picture: A Race for America, we tell the extraordinary story of a year in the life of the most powerful nation on earth struggling through a once-in-a-century global pandemic, and the continuing denial of equality and justice to people of colour. All seen and told through the prism of the last 100 years.
Reaching back over a century, this film outlines how the liberal order constructed by the industrial titans of the early 1900s - such as Andrew Carnegie and John D Rockefeller - and the philanthropic foundations they established, set in place a model of racial integration that put the preservation of the economy above the preservation of Black lives.
The rich, white men who made modern America created an order that protected the system that made them rich, and which keeps others like them rich to this day - a system with racial discrimination baked into it.
Philanthropy’s legacy has served the interests of US white elites, from both the left and the right, who use their wealth to maintain their privilege, or sometimes, to try and moderate its attendant effects. But philanthropic foundations, liberal and conservative alike, have little or no interest in affecting systemic transformation. The enduring modus operandi has been to preserve the system, occasionally offering subtle reform to a prevailing order that had its mask ripped off during the tumult of an incomparable year.
    00:00 Intro
01:54 Philanthropy, education & racial violence
18:34 White fear, Black power & liberal foundations
42:38 Rockefeller, Carnegie & the racial history of US healthcare
51:19 The rise of the new right
    01:21:30 Trump cuts a deal

I often see something like “why would this happen” or “i cant even imagine doing something like this” or “lets just get along” when at the time this stuff starts there’s always a justification people have (religious or ideological etc) or an economic insensitive (cheap labour etc), its how slavery started, and sense we have done barely anything to undo the damage of slavery and segregation its ramifications just keep coming up every year

Growing up in public school with both black and white and Asian students every one of us had the same opportunity. I dont really understand where this race thing is comming from. The one problem i see is the black community feeding their children this idea of racism. I never once growing up even thought other people were classified as race until a black kid claimed the race card. Its yhe black community that needs to wake up and see we all have the same opportunity in America. Stop breaking the law, work hard, and contribute to your community.

It’s not that simple, believe me. You don’t understand bc you don’t want to. Yes some people draw the race card for every and anything. And yes some use it as an excuse to just be lazy and non productive, but there’s definitely systemic racism. People will be looked over bc their name sounds Black. Or get an interview but then denied when they it’s realized that they’re Black , and given some poor explanation of the field is competitive when asked the reason for non selection 😂. If that’s the case, how did the resume earn the interview?

Then you also remove all non whites from history, lit class and libraries. Then you stand around repeating the lie everything is equal. When it is not.

I live in the Netherlands, and to be honest, there is almost no racism here. And even white people who are racist towards black/ Asian people, they are still polite to them when speaking directly to them. I do have to mention that people of color are not complaining as much over here. I guess that way they are easier integrated into our Dutch society. I get that in the US a lot of white people are still racist, but if your mindset is to think you are special, and you are different, and you talk yourself into thinking you are suffering, you will suffer. Black people over here feel like the white people. There are no boundaries between us. White people in the Netherlands think about making money to provide for themselves, and so do black people. Also, I think because over here people have been mixing for hundreds of years, skintone is nothing special anymore. Everybody is just a human at the end of the day.

Someone said that to end racism, start first by not making it out to be a massive issue.
You can only enforce equal opportunities and equal rights and equal treatment by passing laws.
You can't do anything more than that, you can't demonise one side and make the other side feel like they deserve to be held to different standards.
No one is to blame for the behaviour of others, and the best that can be expected is to give everyone the same chances, what individuals do with those chances and opportunities is up to them.

    • @ajsavage9585
      @ajsavage9585 ปีที่แล้ว

Racism is a taught belief like all religions. To end it is to educate and enforce law that make it a crime. One cannot be changed unless the ideology changes. If and like racism your ideology is based on a lie that you have excepted as truth you will live and teach the lie. If the lie benefits you and gives you power and control it’s easy to over look it and see it as normal.

This is beautifully said but unfortunately it is a big issue even in 2023 it’s sad when I was in preschool 5 years old a little white girl said “no offense but I just really hate black people” then again in 4th grade another white girl began yelling and screaming at me saying “your black your black your black” because she found out my grandfather was Native American … They are passing down racism and we are saying it doesn’t exist anymore is a problem. So this is easier said then done and it’s so sad to say. I didn’t get the “police talk” as we call it until 3rd grade.

Stop the cap. I don't know who said that first quote but that's utter bullshit. Racism is not just a petty issue. It's what keeps France from being a third world power. It's what keeps Afro As the permanent underclass of Amerikkka. It's already massive. It's just waiting for fools such as yourself to take it seriously.

We are all Human and there is no difference regardless of the color of skin that's attached to your body. God made us all equally, the Governments are the ones many moons ago that out us in categories just as you see on applications for loans or housing or jobs, even down to opening a bank account, they ask on everyone what race you are and honestly that shouldn't be. You please tell me what your skin color has to do with any application? I will tell you now it's so this government can use it as a tool to keep us separate. When you fill out applications for anything do not answer them questions instead mark it out where it says race and put in bold letters HUMAN. We can and should put a stop to any government, business or employer asking these irrelevant questions. We need to let them know we are the Human race nothing more or less and we are done with their bullshit, we are done with their lack of respect for anyone and we will not tolerate it any longer. The constitution says it all " We the people of the United States" it does not say we the white people or we the black people. It also says that this country is for the people by the people, if everyone would understand that we the people are the ones that are in control and they are our employer, we should never let them vote on laws, pay for themselves or actually vote to send money to other countries or to send our people to fight with out the people of this nation whom are the ones that control saying so. The voting system is so flawed and they use this to cheat because they believe they are the ones that make the rules, we can and should through everyone of them out of office and we should do it before they destroy what we have left, the only thing the American people have been doing is sitting back and letting these people do what they want and now look at what that is getting us, our country is on the verge of collapse and if it does it's because the people let it happen and we will have none to blame but ourselves. It's time to wake up and take our country back regardless of what these people say and if it takes fighting then that is what we will have to do. Back 100 yrs ago or so what is going on now would not be going on like it is today. Our great grandparent made sure of that and some gave their life to defend so we could remain free and we would be able to live more abundantly, somewhere along that path people became soft and decided to just let these people like we have to say take full control and we are losing our country be use if it. Take a stand now please, as we all need to come together for our grandchildren and great grandchildren because if we do not then they do not stand a chance in this world, remember this because if we don't do something now what our kids and grandkids will go through will be our fault, and even though we will not be here at the time they will look back and they will say our grandparent or mom and dad could have changed it all and we would not be going through what we are but they decided to be cowards and make us suffer. God bless and love to all and I pray this message sinks in and wakes you up. Think about the future for our offspring because what we do in our life will effect them 10 times fold of how we are being effected today.
