- The Importance of Offensive Support in NFL Team Success
In the NFL, the quarterback position is often heralded as the most critical role on the field. However, the success of a quarterback-and by extension, the entire team-relies heavily on the quality of the offensive support surrounding them. This support includes run blocking, pass blocking, rushing, and receiving. The performance of these units can significantly influence a team's overall success, as evidenced by the varying fortunes of quarterbacks like Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, and Lamar Jackson.
The Role of the Offensive Line
Pass Blocking
The offensive line's ability to protect the quarterback is paramount. A strong pass-blocking unit provides the quarterback with the necessary time to make accurate throws and strategic decisions. For instance, the offensive line's performance is directly correlated with the quarterback's success, as seen in the case of Justin Herbert. Despite his talent, Herbert has struggled with a below-average offensive line, which has ranked 26th in offensive supporting casts since he was drafted in 2020. This lack of protection has often left him under pressure, leading to hurried throws and increased sack rates.
Conversely, quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, and Lamar Jackson have benefited from superior offensive supporting cast, ranked 8th in the league. This protection has allowed them to execute plays more effectively, contributing to their teams' offensive success and overall winning records.
Run Blocking
Run blocking is equally crucial as it opens lanes for running backs, creating a balanced offensive attack. A strong run-blocking unit can turn an average running back into a game-changer by providing the necessary gaps and lanes to exploit. This balance keeps defenses honest, preventing them from focusing solely on the passing game. Teams with effective run-blocking units can control the game's tempo, maintain possession, and wear down opposing defenses.
The Impact of Skill Positions
Rushing
A potent rushing attack can significantly impact a team's success. Teams that invest in their running game often find themselves in advantageous positions. For example, the resurgence of the running game in recent NFL seasons has shown that teams with strong rushing attacks can dominate time of possession and keep opposing defenses on their heels. The ability to run the ball effectively forces defenses to account for all gaps along the line, not just focus on the quarterback, thereby creating more opportunities for big plays in the passing game.
Receiving
The quality of a team's receiving corps also plays a vital role in a quarterback's success. Elite receivers can make contested catches, run precise routes, and create separation from defenders, making the quarterback's job easier. Teams with strong receiving units, like those supporting Mahomes, Hurts, and Jackson, have consistently performed well offensively. These quarterbacks can rely on their receivers to make plays, even under pressure, leading to higher completion rates and more explosive plays.
Case Studies: The Impact of Offensive Support
Justin Herbert
Since entering the league, Justin Herbert has demonstrated immense talent and potential. However, his performance has been hampered by a lackluster supporting cast. The Chargers' offensive line has struggled with pass protection, and their rushing attack has been inconsistent. Despite these challenges, Herbert has managed to put up impressive numbers, but the team's overall success has been limited. This highlights the importance of a strong supporting cast in maximizing a quarterback's potential and achieving team success.
Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, and Lamar Jackson
In contrast, Mahomes, Hurts, and Jackson have thrived with robust offensive support. Their teams have invested in solid offensive lines, effective rushing attacks, and talented receiving corps. This comprehensive support has allowed these quarterbacks to excel, leading their teams to playoff appearances and, in Mahomes' case, Super Bowl victories. The consistent performance of their supporting casts has been a key factor in their sustained success.
Conclusion
The success of an NFL team is intricately linked to the quality of its offensive support. While the quarterback is a critical component, the performance of the offensive line, running backs, and receivers plays an equally important role. Teams that invest in these areas create a conducive environment for their quarterbacks to thrive, leading to better overall performance and increased chances of success. The contrasting fortunes of quarterbacks like Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes underscore the significance of a strong supporting cast in achieving team success. As the NFL continues to evolve, the importance of comprehensive offensive support will remain a cornerstone of winning football. - กีฬา
I was wrong. He made the Pro Bowl in his second season, not his rookie season.
I just laugh when people say he's overrated. We know he's going to prove the haters wrong next season. BTW, great takes and new sub!
Bro got outplayed by a dude who threw 4 ints in a win or go home game
@@nextin_dabuilding2908 He did NOT get outplayed 🤣🤣
He absolutely did. Hence why he went home.@EverythingBoltzzz
Can you teach Acho how to understand this information?
He understands it. He's scamming. He's a grifter. He is full of 💩 and his going to get his 🥷 wake-up moment soon enough.
@@theboltdown5337yeah he’s a Chargers hater and total clown. 🤡
How many times has Herbert taken the lead in the 4th. Only to have the defense give up the lead soon after. Each of the past 4 years.
Many!
It goes back to at least when Tomlinson was rb maybe further back to the Coryell days. They always had a good team but I think its interventions that keep this team held back...
Supporting cast , this is BASED off of the OFFENSE ? BUT, this goes much father then that ? Herbert's AVG DEFENSE is around RANKED # 26 in his NFL career . I'LL also point out he has had ONLY [ 3 ] 1, 000 yarders in his NFL career . Most of these OTHERS QB"S have had much more ! Burrow, Tua & Hurts have had 3 in just 1 year. All 3 of those QB"S have double what Herbert has had !I'll also point out Herbert has now had [ 4 ] OC & [ 3 ] HC in his 1st , 5 years in the NFL !
I'm pretty sure I talked about the defense and their one mini stretch of solid play getting them to the playoffs. Otherwise, the defense has been the Achilles Heel of this team for sure.
3 counting this yr he is great but when it counts n things go wrong he can't overcome nothing he shrinks in big spots unlike Trevor I'd take Trevor over Justin any day
The difference with burrow and Herbert is burrow actually has a defense to help him out. Chargers D has been bottom 3 the last 3 years
There is no doubt.
We know Justin is top notch. He landed with two bad coaches and seasons of injuries. Unfortunately the only thing that gets accolades is championships. Believe it or not I still think Justin has the potential to better than Mahamoes, even after 5 years in. I mean he's still only 26 years old.
I'll have to put together a video explaining why I believe that Herbert only had one bad coach.
@@theboltdown5337 Lynn wasn't a good headcoach either though, I'd like to hear how he only had 1 bad HC.
@blood_sausage9620 Lynn was an awesome coach. I'll make the video at some point.
@theboltdown5337 I'm not doubting he was a good coach, was he an awesome headcoach though?
Keep the great content brother. Great takes.
Will do. It's hard to get through all this hypothetical nonsense, like predicting wins and losses. So, it'll probably be slow until I can react to some reality.
Remember he only plays offense
And Brandon Staley and his fool hardy defense is out of here.
He wont be overated this season. You can take that to the bank.
Jherb was being USED AND ABUSED of his former HC OF RELYING ON HIM 80% OF THE GAME TO MAKE A PLAY WHICH ONLY EXPOSES him to get hit and pressured all game long, and with the stats not being as bad as it should with any other QB of being abused, JHerb is not over rated and saw too many passes that defy the physics of how the ball moves. Guy can throw the ball for 20 yards on target against 70mph winds like he did at DC a few years back of that awesome 15 yard 1rst down to Williams against the wind. The replay of that pass was amazing!!!!
You get it.
No quarterback does really good without a good running game alls I'm saying is as a charger fan we're putting the whole f****** league on notice
Yes. And only the fools aren't worried. Anyone who has been paying attention knows that even a bad quarterback will dominate you with a rushing attack. What will Herb do?
Everyone with a brain knows it was branden staley.
Yea. Retired NFL veterans were saying this in Staley's first year. "This guy doesn't know what he's doing!" They were right.
I appreciate everything that you have said about Trevor Lawrence a lot of idiots just really don’t do there research Thank you for being 💯💯💯💯💯 about TLaw
He's only overrated because he is a charger. There's maybe 5 teams in the league that wouldn't need herbert. Every other team would drop a bag on herb and drop there starter lmao
They'd give up the house.
To me it sounds like you are making the case of all qbs are overpaid because it truly takes a team to be successful.
I can certainly see where you're coming from, but if you put Alex Smith on the Chiefs, they're not beating the Ravens or Bills. The Chargers would be BLOWN OFF THE FIELD every time they play the Chiefs without Justin Herbert. You definitely need a complete team to have a realistic shot at the Super Bowl. That's what Harbaugh and Co are building in LA.
Mahomes is on there too? Acho ain't nothin but clickbait central anyhow.
True indeed. That dude will do and/or say anything to make a buck - while dancing.
So if we are taking the most successful qb versus the best qb those are so much team based. Great defenses shut down so many offenses late in games. So if your qb scored with 13 seconds left in the game that’s great last second drive. But your defense gave up a fg. That’s not on the qb. Sorry.
But only scoring one fg the whole second half is on ur qb
It’s all for attention. Pay it no mind
Listen to what Greg Roman said about him during OTAs.
I'll be happy when this team takes the field. They're working harder and smarter. I loved that video.
I really like him bunches but trevor is better in the big moment n thiers teams are close he had better weapons n much better line n def was close jaga had a better coach till this yr so i think both teams are very happy with thier guy
Pfft!
He is overrated. Not in the sense of he is a terrible player he’s a good starting qb. But lot of times he was ranked around 4-5 before last season I don’t think he proved enough for that. Regardless of teammates and coaching he hasn’t been the most clutch end of games.
What has Herbert done? He has won nothing. I hope under Harbaugh winnings Wil come
LOL.
Seriously STFU. Mahomes had a terrible offense but his defense won for him last year. You put mahomes on the chargers he does worse than herbert.
He's won nothing because his defense has let him down every year. Period. He done his job. Stats prove that. Meanwhile you have defense that couldn't stop a D1 offense.
