Thank you. Just got a new German shephard. My last one ears stood up really quick.. this pup there still not up. He's 2 months. He did have one go up when he heard a bird in the backyard so your explanation definitely makes sense.
What worked for me right away was giving my gsd pup, soup bone broth everyday. Also I fed him a lot of raw meat along with his high quality kibble. But mainly the bone broth is what did the trick. Hes ears were fully up by 3 months.
My longcoat German shepherd puppies get a little chicken feed in their food daily till teething is over almost 1 year 7 months or so. And I also help them with a little tear mender glue on the side of each ear. (It's non toxic). I have been using these methods many years. It works also I put a little non color or flavor gelatin for 2 weeks.
@@wendymattyrivas7690 I bought tear mender glue on Amazon and the chicken also on Amazon chicken feed for chicks just a little in their dog once a day till ears stay up and strong ears.
I successfully splinted a WL Shepherd of mine who was born with a floppy slightly smaller deformed ear.I taped one of those squishy pink foam hair rollers starting when she was three months when I got her for a couple months. Her ear stood up but always was janky looking.RIP Heike.
Even if puppies share parents their phenotypic genes as individuals are different. Wide set ears for example need more muscle strength in order to stand than narrow set ears. Feed your puppy bones made from collagen instead of hide, that’ll supply the correct nutrition as well as muscle strength. You’ll also need to support the ear if its anatomy is not ideal. But doing «tendon exercises» is far from enough.
Sharon Sharon don't give up just yet. I have had some luck with older dogs by keeping things lively around them. You can also post that ear up and cross your fingers. But it's still early good luck
I have an 11 month old yorkie whose ears are floppy. One more than the other. Could you please reach out to Dr Schaffer to see if there is anything I could do to help get them to stand? Her floppy ears are cute, but I really would like to have them stand if there is a chance.
Haha I'm here for the same breed but mines a Yorkie cross with Shih tzu.Mine has one up and one down.Ive done the pink foam curler in one of my shepherds before which worked but these little ears are a whole different ballgame.I was reading about breathe right strips glued in and may try that as well.Mine looks wonky with the one down.
Very interesting! I cam across another video recently in which someone said that giving a puppy something that takes some work to chew also helps develop the muscles and tendons that hold up the ears. I wonder also if feeding collagen in some form helps too.
I adopted a malnourished cattle dog. He is approximately 18 months old. His ears don’t stand up one does every once in a while. Can I still do something to help him? He deserves his natural ears.
That's a tough one at that late age. There are surgical solutions but all I can think to do is show him lot & lots, &LOTS of new stuff everyday and he MIGHT get them up, sorry.
I always try to make a whistle or other different sound as I enter the room where we keep our pups. sudden sharp noises seem to always get those ears pricked and standing, let me know if that helps.
My pups are raised in my house with our family. They were socialized and had stimulation and were loved on all the time. we still had one puppy whose ears did not stand. it's any number of reasons why. but, I will say this. Stop tugging on the ears, it breaks down the cartilage. When we clean the ears we never tug on them.
My youngest is 5 months old, well socialized and teething with her adult teeth coming in nicely. Both her ears were up until 1 month ago, since then one of them has begun to flop and I am wondering, is there any truth to the idea that adding extra Collagen to her diet would help to strengthen her cartledge in the floppy ear? Thank you.
Rose, Thanks for the. question. No, there are a lot of people that think collagen or calcium will help, but there has never been any evidence showing that. All pups ears will flop when they begin teething due to the discomfort or of new. teeth breaking in. If your pups ears were standing before teething started you should have no problems when the process is over. Keep her involved and interested in new things and you should have no problems, Good luck
My long hair showline gsd just turned 1 year and has floppy ears he does stand them up but only when i am not around or when he is alone is there any hope or is it too late as i started applying glue and ear supports (he has big ears)
That's a tuff one. Best I can say for sure is it cab't hurt anything. I have seen earfs stand after one year, and I think, again think can't say for definite but stimulating them with new sights and sounds as well s posting the ears could do the trick. Most GSD are going to grow a little until at least 18 months. If you have growth then you should still have the potential for the ears to stand. Good luck.
Never too late a little tear mender glue on side ear glue fur together chicken feed in dog food or gelatin powder in dog food just a little for a few months!
Likely, but I have made some progress with with dogs as old as 11 months by splinting the ears. They make a light foam splint for shepherds ears that is simple to use. I will try to find the name to it and put a link up for you. No promies but we'll see what happens. Get that dog out to see the world, you might make a difference.
@@CappelCanine thank you so much. Trust me, this dog has been to puppy training for his first year and has a 1-1 with my trainer every week. I exposed him to pretty much everything from the age of 8 weeks old, so I’m perplexed as to why he has floppy ears? He started out in kibble and once that was gone he went straight on to raw food and he’s had bones regularly since then, so his jaw is strong from plenty of chewing.

I was told by my vet that when my boy is done teething his ears should start to come up. I give him a rawhide every day to chew on.
This makes perfect sense. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
