I have owned GSD for 25 years. I have always been the leader, provided training, socialization and exercise. I love the breed and give my time to make sure I am a good leader. It isn’t difficult, it takes my time, attention and love. All dogs need a leader. My dogs don’t chase other dogs, cats, children, etc. I trained them to obey me. I am now 76, have a 2 year old male. I did train him personally and hired a professional. It was costly, but I use positive reenforcement and buy dogs from an excellent breeder. I get them at 8 weeks, chipped, and with early vaccines. He is very healthy, happy and protects me and my home.

ive had german shepherds for 25 years and the time you put into them pays off. Always reputable breeders and much exercise and now that im retired at 66 am with my 2 year old full time. she is a very smart girl but knows who is the leader. She is a true asset to breed but owners need to know what they are doing

I would apply your philosophy for all dogs. As long as we provide them a healthy lifestyle and meet the needs of that particular dog breed. I love GSDs. We rescue and alot of our dogs have been GSD mix. We even have a Border Collie Belgian Malinois. If we all put the effort into our dogs, we reap the rewards especially our dogs.

Our gsd died yesterday. I find them gentle loving dogs. I was raised to be the alpha female in the pack with our little Jack Russell Terriers. They didn't bark unless a stranger entered the backyard. Nor jump up on people or onto furniture. They did play a serious game of soccer and were happy to play tug of war with a blade of grass and a two year old.
Our gsd had two sisters, a ginger cat and a black and white cat. They were good friends. Working dogs need to use their brains.

MY GSD puppy is the most high energy, high reactivity and high prey drive dog I've ever owned. And I grew up with GSD's in the 70's.
For me, getting her to play nice with the cats was the most important training.
For the last year the cats have followed her around when I take her for walks.
    They LOVE her !!!!!!!!!!!!

My GSD was my best friend. I’d take him with me on road trips throughout the SW. he’d sit in the backseat of my pickup looking out the rear window. I kept it open enough for him to look out. I’d be going down the interstate and horns would honk behind me. Especially female drivers. Couldn’t figure it out until one day I watched in the rear view…Steiner was watching and women would wave at him…he actually flirted with them! He’d cock his head from side to side and make those GSD faces…I laughed so hard I almost wrecked. Einstein passed a few years ago…I miss him every day…❤

I'm glad that there are videos out there like this one. Too often, I run into people that got a husky or GSD or some other breed that requires a knowledgeable owner providing leadership, exercise, mental stimulation etc. and by the time they are 1 to 3, I find out for many reasons including aggression and reactivity that they turned them into a rescue, or now on some farm. Or the husky that people leave in a crate all day while they go to work. These kind of videos help educate people BEFORE they choose any breed. in the end, the dog suffers especially when people pick breeds for their "looks" or they seem them on TV series, or they like the idea of having a GSD (like owning a porsche).

I have had 5 GSD'S. Wonderful breed. They are a full time job. But if you can do it, it is so rewarding to have such an awesome friend! Gunner is 9 and slowing down. I would love to have a 6th one but age and health are now my concern. Life would really suck without a GSD.

I am 76 and on my 6th GSD. I am a widow, so he is my best friend and only 3 years old. I had a female too, she died of old age 4 weeks ago. I will always have a GSD, but in the future will get a retired breeding GSD at 5 years of age. She will already be trained and happy to be with me as her retired family I just love these guys. I leave my breeder to inherit my dog if the die.
Of course no appropriate family member. They do need a devoted owner. I am devoted.

My current GSD is 18 months old. Yes, he can be challenging at times but he is perfectly socialized and does NOT have a mean bone in his body. I made mistakes during his puppy months and so, sometimes he seems cautious around me. For the previous month, I've been back on track and aside from looking for other dogs to play with, he's just great!!! I refuse to use a prong or ecollar or choke collar - he has a flat collar and harnesses. For jumping and nipping which I wish he'd stop, I just starting using the "air compressed pet corrector" which gives off a loud hiss ( like Cesar Milan). It seems to be REALLY effective so we're on to something really excellent for the "worst" behaviour ( when he gets really excited, he jumps and "nips" people - he's TOO big for this so I have to put an end to it - and until I watched Will Atherton ( A FANTASTIC trainer in the UK and on TH-cam) I didn't know how "corrector" worked......I also follow many of Will Atherton's training advice - well worth it if you have a GSD and you need 'support!!"

I had GSD, she was very protective of her pack (family). Her favorite encounters were with cats or small dogs. And all dogs/cats from our apartments building were her friends and were always protected (but sometimes chased).

In my experience for a GSD to thrive it needs 2 sniff walks a day, one in a big area where you run the legs off them and a further half hour of play round the house EG hiding things or yourself. An extra long sniff walk at the weekend is also good. I used to take mine to some dog friendly woods that were half an hour away by car or down by the river which was ten minutes to get into the countryside. If you do it right the dog will just want to sleep on you while you relax watching a film etc. I used to get mine well and truly conked out by about 8pm.

if you never had a dog before , GSD is not recommended, honestly. they need an experienced owner. I would go and talk to other owners, especially if you see a well behaved GSD. if you could reduce your hours a bit when you first get a dog Id say it’s doable but if at the beginning you are away from home for 8-9 hours straight it will be a lot for any dog to handle. can you leave work at lunchtime and go home? family/ friends or dog walker could help. if you get a puppy, having a cat won’t be a problem at all, they will be best friends. if you thinking of adopting, most likely you will never see the cat again. if you know what your doing, you can have three GSDs in a small flat, its all about taking them out to different parks etc. if you exercise and stimulate your dog enough, it will sleep like a baby, a lot. GSDs are not spaniels or border collies with unlimited energy. they are high energy but need proper rest afterwards. the first year, year and a half, will be challenging and require enormous commitment but its definitely doable!

  • @gregculverwell

I'm on my 5th GSD. I have never had a problem with them because I'm the boss.
One thing I learnt was that if you have a rule, you must never waver. The minute you relax a rule it's over - they know it's negotiable.l and will never respect it again.
The only one that was hard work in the beginning was my 4th one.
I bought him aged 6 months from a breeder @1/2 price when found him impossible to deal with. They had kept him to breed with because he was the pick of the litter
He was getting into fights with all the adult dogs and had a confrontation with the helper.
Really he was just so boisterous and completely fearless. In the beginning he would draw blood when I played with him.
I would just refuse to play and then shun him for an hour or so. He very quickly learnt that hurting me was a no no and was more careful.
Turned out to be the very best dog I've had.
He lived to 15. I still talk about him 8 years later.

When they eventually died 12 and 13.5yrs, i realised that i was too old to put that effort into training and socialisation, and walk that much again, so now i have a Pomeranian and a Jack Chi. @markgreenwell5830 to own a German Shepherd like any dog, you should research it first. Find out about the dog & then see if you have the time to put into it what you need too. I've had a few & although the traits are the same, personalities have been different. They've all tried to push the boundaries at some point but they learnt who was top dog. If you don't teach them that, then you will have problems as they get older & bigger.

Granda had a massive GS dog which he rescued from a breeder, absolutely without training. My mother went daily to feed it and it tried to attack her every time. It was super protective of granda and attacked anyone coming to the house except me. My mother asked why the bugger came to me tail wagging and friendly. I explained that shepherds are a pack animal and understand the alpha male. She didn’t understand so I explained that the first time he came charging out of his kennel all teeth and barking I simply stepped towards him screaming back and punched him on his forehead. Now it knocked him on his ass and he spent a few moments shaking his head and considering the situation. I stood over him staring at him until he stood up and I petted him. We were great friends and that tap on his head reset many years of neglect in his social skills. He still attacked everyone else 😂
I do not condone hitting animals but the situation required some instant therapy 😂

I've only seen video to 2:12 and it RINGS SPOT ON!
I brought home my German Shepherd/Golden Lab mix two years ago and she is everything I wanted in this mix; that I planned on bringing home for about 10-years before I considered myself "ready" for her. I bought a kennel 5 years before I saw a sign in front of an Arby's for G.S./Lab mix puppies. I was waiting for specifically this mix.
I had a black lab years ago, Tanner, who was awesome; but very difficult to keep "home!" I couldn't bring myself to have him neutered and paid the price - he broke a 1/2" cable once and was nearly impossible to keep from carousing the neighborhood looking to get laid. There was a sheep farmer about a mile from us and Tanner would get lose and go chase the sheep. Once he came home with a butt full of bird shot from his escapades. One time our house was broken into and cleaned out. I have no doubt that Tanner was helping them carry my stuff out. An air traffic controller at the time... When we came home from work, Tanner was locked in his pen in the back yard - apparently put their by the thieves just to get him out of the way. So... this time I got "Chewy" (Chewbacca - she sounds like the Star Wars critter when she want's my attention!), this time with the German Shepherd blood, hoping for better results if it happens again. It's questionable!!! She is very loving and a ham for attention from EVERYONE! Every time I take her out among the humans - EVERYONE comments on how beautiful she is. I'm a PROUD PAPA!!!
BUT... Intelligent, challenging, energetic are just some of her traits. As a 69y.o. retired, disabled vet (who was looking for a pup that would resurrect my former active life) I now have a HAND FULL!!! I take her out to play Frisbee every day just to run off her energy. Sadly, the as*holes that I got her from clearly abused her - I suspect that they slammed her tail and left front leg in a door as abuse due to her energy. She now has a limp on her front left leg and a curiously gimpy tail. When I first went to the "breeder," Chewy came right up to me and stuck her nose in mine - It seemed like an obvious choice. Wanting to have a dog to ride my bike with and explore the nature in Florida (a disgusting Sauna of a place!!!), it is typical of my luck to have another being to "care for!!!" that only wants, and wants, and wants - about every 10 or 15 minutes!
BTW: tRump is a SOCIOPATH AND HAS NO BUSINESS IN THE WHITE HOUSE OR ANYWHERE NEAR "LEADERSHIP!!!"
    Welcome to America!!!

It is very important to start training early. These dogs are incredibly smart. Start dog school/obedience training as a young pup aprox 12 weeks of age. You and dog together, in a group setting. Acclimate your pup to everything. Take your pup 5 new places a week, introduce it to all kinds of ppl and animals. If possible, see the parents for an idea of temperment and correct back and hips.
If you spend this time training, you will have the best dog anyone could ever ask for. My now 9 year old Female GSD is an everything dog, A dear friend, protects and is friends with all the other farm animals including the cats and chickens. She is excellent with special needs children and to visit nursing homes, to make old folks happy she is also an excellent watch dog.
You can teach these guys anything, Willow keeps the chickens out of the gardens, as they guy mentioned, these dogs want to have a job to be proud of in helping you. I wouldn't have any other kind of dog. A well trained GSD is the best all around dog in so many ways.

As a dog trainer for 42 + yrs I say the biggest reason most people can't handle G Shepherds or LG smart dogs is because they are irresponsible and uneducated. You have to know the history of the dog and be prepared to take on the challenges of what it takes to handle these majestic creatures.

Too many people don't think twice before getting a German Shepherd and they end up in animal shelters. It's criminal. I still love my German Shepherd deep in my heart, though he is gone now. If I could choose only one dog of the four I've owned in my whole life ( in my 70's now) I would choose him in a heartbeat.

I have 2 littermate males. They are 4 now. Their favorite game is "moon ball". They have these glow in the dark ball toys that we play catch and chase with. Then, afterwards they bring them in for some serious "chomps". Trained protection assets, but also the biggest goobers on the planet.

I've been a dog behaviorist and trainer for 40 years. I've owned 4 GSD along with other breeds and can say that most of these reasons can be said about all breeds of dogs. But yes.... The German Shepherd is not for just anyone. And if you are going to get a GSD, make sure you go to a proven, top breeder. Research pedigrees and decide what kind of GSD you want. High energy? Lower energy? Dominant? Passive? Long coat? There are several different strains.

A few months ago I saw a lady in an outside mall with a gorgeous 6mo GSD that had it all over her.
Seeing that she was struggling I asked if I could take the lead.
Within 30 seconds he was sitting on my foot and leaning against my leg.
"How'd you do that?" she asked. "I just showed you."
If I was in better health and in need of a dog [I adopted a GSD rescue who is now 7 - 8yo] I would have offered to buy this beautiful pup from her.
There's no shame in admitting that a dog is too much for you.

My GSD is a terror. I have other dogs, but this one is so smart, and he uses it for evil. He can open his kennel, he opens round doorknobs, bar doorknobs and sliding doors. He knows turning my lights on in the morning wakes me up. He doesn't allow men in the house at all only women. If I'm walking him and someone opens the door of their car, he tries to get in for a car ride. He ate 3 couches and digs holes, he cost me like 10k in vet bills and he is obsessed with lights so if the sun shines into the house the wrong way he will destroy the spot the light shines on.
He is by far my favorite dog though. I moved to a 71 acre farm so he can just live out the rest of his days as he was meant to, being a complete asshole.

There is truth in this video but it's not all that dark. I have a working line, i keep him outside in cage, he is not vocal or anything, you just have to make plan to teach him routine. I have never went out with him and be like im gona train him or teach him. He learned much things just on his growing up way in some situations I needed him to stay or wait and walk beside leg. Just walk him and feed him at the same time every day and go out walk him around other people and animals when he is young. Smart dog he doesnt make any problems and he learns from situations.

Show line and work line GSD are two totally different animals, not really the same breed at all. It is amazing that this is not made clear right at the start in videos like this. Most likely the people who make these clips do not even know it, just make these blahblah videos to get views. Most points here are about workline dogs, but videos mostly are of show line ones.
