That song just tears your heart out. The first line sets it up perfectly. "He said I'll love you till I die."

This new generation I tell you..."all dressed up to go away" and "first time I see him smile..." this is where the funeral home dresses you up and puts a smile on your face..."soon they'll carry him away" was the key.

This is THE GREATEST COUNTRY AND WESTERN SONG EVER PERFORMED. There is ONLY ONE PERSON that is able to sing this particular song and bring out the tears. And, that particular person is George Jones and NO ONE ELSE!!!! NO ONE!!!

    Gracie
George Jones was married to and sang together with the beautiful Tammy Wynette.
    (The Love of His Life)
She divorced him and even took his band when she left. He always put on a good face although you could see it in his eyes that he never got over her. He always said this song was not about her, but everyone knew it was.

Ya, George did a song called "No Show Jones" and mentions Tammy in it. He was also known as 'Possum'.

Hi Gracie, I'm not a huge country fan but there are a ton of country songs I love and this is one. Many consider it the greatest country song of all time. George Jones has been considered by many the greatest country singer of all time. He died several years ago after a lifelong battle with alcohol. I hate this video because reactors always read the bio and miss the song and I could see you doing the same thing! But, aha, you went back and listened a second time. BRILLIANT and thank you! You got it and I could easily see on your face when the lyric said "they carried him away", right then you got it! All country songs tell good stories and the lyrics are as important as the melody. Just pick out some of the greatest hits of each decade and you'll enjoy most of them. GREAT reaction. I saw this song and had to check it out. Thank you.

This song brings to mind a person walking through life, and you see them there, they talk with you, but, they are really some other place or some other time. Their memories keep them in the present and give them hope. But, the the glimmer of hope you might see in their eyes and the smile on their face, is only there because they remember the past and how much they want their present to be like that! So, so, sad!

Yes, he died. In the beginning of the song he said he'd love her til he dies. They had a rough life at times. Like his alcoholic father, George drank and supposedly he and Tammy Wynette (his wife and love of his life, as well just as much of a giant of a performer as George Jones) had bad fights when he did. Not sure if he was violent then, but maybe why she left him over and over. I do believe they were each other's true, big love. Working it out is not easy for anyone, but what a couple!
