The first line almost tells the story... "He said I'll love you 'til I die" - and he did. That was the day he stopped loving her. In the chorus "they placed a wreath upon his door, and soon they'll carry him away..." are they confirming lines. He died the day he stopped loving her. Very sad but it does happen sometimes. George Jones was, as Garth Brooks said at the Kennedy Center awards, "simply the greatest voice to ever sing country music".

Everyone thought this was his tribute to his 2 time wife Tammy Wynette.. not true.. but love hearing him sing anything.. this man was popular in my Grandparents time.. but it's George Jones.. the Possum.. incredible. He was a drunk from Hell back in the 60's and 70's but got clean finally and got even better with his music. Country Legend

She went to his funeral! The song says, "They put a wreath upon his door. Soon they will carry him away." The very first line that was hard to hear because the audience was applauding was about how he would love her till he died. Read the lyrics. It's obvious.

I always thought the wreath on the door was the big clue. I know funeral homes in the south put a white wreath on the front door to let neighbors know someone has passed away. I'm sure it's not done everywhere but still, tv, movies depict these things.
