perhaps a spinning reel on the rod would help you. Birds nests (line tangles) can be a problem with those reels for a beginner. Put your thumb lightly on the line when casting or reeling in to help prevent it happening. As for sharks...they will only eat you if you are wet.
You guy’s are hilarious, I love listening to your conversations, which are “real” and appreciated! Although, I’m worried about that “fishing”.......🤣 Seriously, after watching what’s happening in Melbourne I must admit that you’re either the most intelligent or the luckiest prior residents.... and definitely the “HAPPIEST”!!
Great video. Thanks ALWAYS identify your fish. Some are poisonous. Some species are safe to eat in one area and poisonous in another because of what they eat. Looking forward to your next one.
I run a charter fishing boat and we deal with backlashed reels and novice anglers all the time. If you don’t think the fish will run all the way down to the backlash, just crank over the top of it and clear the tangle after the fish has been landed. Learning to not open the bail when you have a fish on is important, but don’t dwell on a tangle, just land the fish first.
You guys are so funny (in a cool way). I smiled and laughed all the way through. I love how you share with us that sometimes you have no idea about something, but you learn as you go. It gives great encouragement for those of us watching. Great viewing, thanks heaps. 😉
Wow, that was a breeze! Wide Bar Bar can be horrific, I have been through there with breaking waves far too big to measure but to give you an indication, we lost sight of the mast head of our friends yacht by a long way and that's some 65ft above deck height. So you picked a great day! You're bring back some fantastic memories! I hope and planning to be back out there in the coming years, perhaps we might be lucky enough to exchange stories at an open bbq at some remote yet beautiful location. Treasure you're journey! Life doesn't get any better, you're at the pinochle!!
What a great video blog! I`m totally hooked. A tip: When you prepare fish caught at or near reefs try to wash the surface with some fresh water before filleting them. The slime on the skin has some algae on it and that can have an affect on the taste when cooking (I got this tip from a sailing chef). Following you from very dark, very fast cooling Finland.
Kristina: you can reduce the boats rolling at anchor in side on waves if you attach a line to the stern and then bring the other end up to the anchor line (or reverse the sequence depending on you chain handling method), and attach so you have a triangular shape section. It will help pull the stern around, to reduce roll
As I was scanning through videos on TH-cam last night, I said to myself. Self, you haven't seen a new video from my mates down under (then I realized that you post on Sundays). It's always good to see a new video from you guys, I look forward to it. Have a great week.
I am so behind on your videos but catching up. Little trick I found with the drone when your on an unstable platform and trying to catch it was flying it in reverse to the person catching it. With all the sensors in front and below it is hard to bring in, but backwards works well.
Great video guys, had everything especially humour, and what a wonderful place to be in. Take your time and enjoy your experience. Making memories for the future.
Hey guys always great to get another brilliant video & Kristina, your reporting skill shows thro with the way you present each episode. You guys are certainly living the dream & its so good to see you both enjoying it so much. It does appear also that John is cool all the time & does seem to know what he is doing even tho this is your 1st time sailing. Fraser Island is brilliant & you may even see some Southern Right whales off Harvey Bay as I think that they should still be calving there. Enjoy what you have & may God be with you as you travel further north in coming days/weeks.
Thank you for such a lovely video! Good work catching the fish - hope the next one tastes better! Lovely to see you exploring the coast of Aus, looked like a lovely walk! Looking forwrd to the next video already :-)!
LOL you can only take the best Cuts for Sashimi on Mack Tuna, the rest of it Garlic and Butter or soy Ginger and lime and sear in the pan gently and it melts in the mouth.
I have watched some of your older travel vlogs and they're very good but I really like your new Fishing channel or is it a Sailing Channel ? What ever genre it is is, it's fun to watch ! I hate Bait Casting reels ! Spent more time dealing with 'Birds Nest" than fishing ? ✌️💜🎸
Great vid guys. You had me smiling and laughing the whole way through. Life is good when your only troubles are just a tangled line and a fish that isn't the greatest thing in the world to eat. Just because a fish looks edible......well, you know. It was so great seeing you guys tether yourselves to the boat. Very smart. Other YT sailors really could learn a lot from you guys there. Better to have redundancies(the anchor line) and safety gear on and not need them than to be caught without it.
John agrees and says "the tethers aren't very useful in the cupboard" 😂😂 Haha! Thanks so much for your generous words. John and I are sitting here reading your kind comment and we feel a lot of love 🥰🥰🥰 Hope you have a wonderful week! ❤️x
Still trying to cook while cruising... Tip. Don't try making too much, best to either cook in advance and make the rice/noodles as required, or have some quick to make meals available. Once your sailing and the boat is heeling, you won't enjoy cooking any more... hahahaha
Great episode guys, my understanding as a fisherman, no sharks when dolphins are around, always look up to what fish is edible, not all fish taste good, congrats on your first 🎣.
Commenting on previous videos - adjustable spanners are good for turning hex nuts into round nuts, as well as finger damage. And waiting on your comments on water generators. other TH-cam vloggers seem to think they are essential, but then they are in ports with suspect fresh water supplies whereas Aussie water is generally better quality.
interesting the way you 2 react to the new things in your life , had a few smiles watching your vlog , especially about the dolphin shark thing , when you see them together will be an eye opener ahahah all cruisers will tell you any fish you catch tastes good ,
G'day from a sunny Sydney. As novice fisher-folk, I'd suggest you dump that reel and get yourself a large spinning reel or overhead reel....the one you have is infamous for getting horrible snags like you got when in inexperienced hands!!! And yes, Frigate Mackerel aren't worth keeping unless you're starving and have had no luck catching anything else. But, one lives and learns. I'd go into your next port to the local Bait & Tackle shop or (BCM if it's available) and get yourself a new reel. While you're there get yourself a hand reel with some heavy duty fishing line so you can fish by hand (which in certain conditions is easier than using a rod), just make sure you have good gloves that will prevent cuts or heat burn from the line if you hook a decent sized fish. Happy fishing!
Hey guys what was the most important thing the sailboat had to have in order.to buy it. With 50 ft do you feel that you have plenty of space? Another great place you shared with us thanks👍
@@KristinasTravels where do you get the snapshots of the Aussie maps from etc? ( the ones you often zoom in on ). It really adds to the informative storytelling :)
Therefore to avoid this you have to apply a s;oght drag so that the reel retains line which is being pulled by the resistance of the lure in the water...or better still if there is a fish. however the fish in instances can swim faster than the boat in which case the slight drag prevents line going out faster and coiling up in a birds nest. y two cents worth.
Actually, sharks do prey on smaller dolphins but pods of dolphins banding together usually can handle sharks trying to dart in and get at the young. And a full-size adult dolphin male isn't usually in any great danger from sharks although that seems to differ a little from one location to another. Meaning that for one reason or another there are spots where shark attacks on dolphins are more frequent than usual.
Hi Guys great video, and glad you stop putting names on your self in the video. You should have bleed the fish it helps a lot. Also I have been following Simon for a very long time. When you showed where you were I said that’s Simon yacht there. So glad you both meet.

Bleed those Tuna immediately. Those winch type reels always need a little drag or they will backlash. That is how you get those tangles.
