We start building the stem of the boat which is part of the bow. Very exciting! We also rent a sky lift to fix the leaking barn roof so we get a dry roof before we start planking the hull.
We are a Swedish family who have sailed the world since 2016 while sharing the adventures here on TH-cam. While we are still sailing our main focus now a days is building RAN III, a 50 ft sailboat that we are building from scratch. We post a new episode every Friday so make sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be the first to know when there is a new episode!

Love,
Malin, Johan & Vera
Johan is such a pro in woodwork, and Malin turns out professional quality videography and narration week after week. Instead of worrying about yet another mistake, we know that Johan will succeed, the project will move forward, and we can relax and enjoy viewing this unique story unfold on a farm in Sweden.
I love RAN sailing. So many TH-cam channels that follow couples' sailing adventures just drip with privilege, and I can't stomach them. Malin and Johan seem so down to earth and aren't afraid to get their hands dirty.
Not sure if I said this before but I’m just as happy watching these “non-sailing” videos as I was watching your “sailing videos.” 😊
Your new woodstock is such a blessing. To be able to walk into the next room and select the required pieces of oak, is a huge cost and time saving. Good to see the roof fixed up for now. I hope you can keep the place long term as an off season home and workshop. RANIII will deserve excellent care under cover.
What a beautiful place to bring a child up. Vera is so lucky ❤
The dolphins at your bow have been replaced by deer, cranes and pheasants! What a treat.
Lovely laminating, giving the stem more strength. Regarding the barn roof, the old asbestos corrugated sheets deteriorate badly over time and one wonders about deadly fibres being released. Maybe when summer returns you can give it a pressure hosing off and then spray it with an acrylic paint to seal off those fibres making it safe forever?
Those cranes flew over my house last week. In Luxembourg, they come and go every spring /autumn from Scandinavia to Spain
It's easier to do projects when you have your own cheerleader. Go daddy! Go daddy! So cute.
A significant milestone, this is the first bit of your boat you have made
And we now have the 1st piece of your sailboat!!
Well done! Let the process truly begin
Fair winds ⛵️
Hello. what I enjoy, Johan, you handle a "lift", like any professional, yes, we don't worry about Snickeriet. Malin lovely pictures, cranes what a bonus to all the wild spirit. "Tip", But if you were sitting on the hood, then the VOLVON, m, front wheel drive would have done it right away!!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your contribution! It really means a lot to us. Best, Malin and Johan
Wow! talk about the right tool for the job. Just imagine trying to do that off of ladders or scaffolding.
Love the part about "If at first you don't succeed..." Glad Johan made it! Thank you from Victoria BC for this and all these wonderful insights into your lives. They make Fridays so good that even the whole week now seems better.
Fantastic view from the lifter, but precarious lol. Great job on the roof Johan. Wow, amazing to have Cranes walking around. What a great process to be able to watch you start making actual pieces for the boat. Fantastic job. Love the vlog :)
I remember years ago when I started out as a floor covering installer.
We would go in on a old vinyl asbestos tile floor and sand it down real good and install another floor on top.😮
This was long ago and we just didn’t know any better.
I hope you guys get more subs. Best sailing channel on youtube!
I don't believe that a homeowner would be allowed to remove asbestos panel in the USA. Glad you took precautions. I really appreciate your content and your adventures!
Johan is a superhero! I don't think I'd have been brave enough to go that high in the air to deal with asbestos tiles. Vera was right to cheer him on. 😳 You might consider laying down some gravel on that driveway, or at least on the stubborn part of it.
That's going to be one tough stem. May it never be tested.
Thanks for taking the time to explain asbestos precautions, working with and around it, and the disposal of hazardous waste in a proper facility. Keeping Malin and Vera safely away. 👍Thanks for sharing the views from above. Beautiful winter day.
OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!! SO Exciting to be Part of..
Wow the CNC is worth its weight in gold, there will be lots of jobs it will fulfill during this project.
Well done, time for a little heat? You were shivering a little whilst working.
Only for as long as the build is exactly true to plan, which it probably won’t be, or they would have to 3D scan everything all the time and make elaborate designs in CAD first. Not sure that would be very efficient but would be interesting to see if that could replace the traditional ways of taking patterns🤓
@@rutgerw.
As a model boat builder I have spent hundreds of hours transferring blueprint information to all manner of building material.
I am impressed how quickly they have incorporated new technology into what might be one of the oldest of man’s skills.
Well done all.
There’s 2d scanners that can make patterns directly into a cutting files. Expensive though… 😊
You may have already heard but your last boat Ran II has been renamed to Tela Ru and I just finished watching their maiden trip from Coconut Grove in Florida(Miami Area). She is still in very good shape and a nice young couple are sailing her hopefully around the world. I am really fascinated by your latest project of building Ran III. It's going to be beautiful. Keep up the great work.
Hi , nice work , that first piece makes one realize , just how big and how much wood is going to be used . Your timber store and your views are amazing , thanks for your family video , have fun and enjoy .😉❤👍👍👍
Cranes everywhere you look!
Those are jazz trumpet cranes. Look, I’m not trying to be facetious. The boat is quite some distance from the water! You can thank me later!
Great stories, love them - take care on that cherry picker - I recommend a harness - there is a risk to being flicked out !!
Thank you for this wonderful episode. I look forward to you each week. I enjoy that you share other parts of your lives and not just the build. And it is good that you show the how and why of your decision making processes. You are a true craftsman and I enjoy the beautiful work that you do..
First visit and I am impressed!!! I would suggest that when storing the wood planks, please consider using strips of wood to separate the layers to prevent any dampness ruining them. Looking forward to more episodes.
Love your videos, Juan I was a carpenter and cabinet builder in a past life. Now I’m a trucker here in the states and I enjoy seeing your videos on my times off I will say though be very cautious with table size they are a tricky piece of machinery, and I have a couple of fingers that can testify to that you should invest in a deadman for your outfit. Specially, if you’re gonna plan on doing a lot of cutting by yourself and using that size of materials, safety is first I’ve done many air jobs on lifts as well replacing windows on skyscrapers and stuff so I know how wobbly those things can be enjoy and I’ll be looking forward to seeing your next video. Thank you.
You have your cranes, we have our Blue Heron. Life on the water with big birds. (my logo)
I tested the limits of a lift once and had to call the fire department in order to get down from 17m high up. Turned out a hydraulic hose got squeezed in max position and could not release 😂
I have learned from other boatbuilders that you should be using white oak, never red oak, which acts like a big sponge when submerged in water. Please check your stock, and please invest in a grade AAA ladder for safety reasons. Thanks for the videos. I've a lot of catching up to do; just subscribed. Cheers from Oregon.
The first piece! How exciting!
The beginning of your next “home”. Bit by bit it will grow and take shape into your dream boat. Also Vera will start to grow with this and hopefully start helping with some simple tasks given to her. Onwards and upwards to your goal 🤓
This is a part that will be in the final boat, this makes it very exciting for me. Can't wait to see how it progresses.
Thank you so much for taking all of us on this adventure.
The views are amazing.
This Yacht is going to be amazing I can already tell as the attention to detail and search for perfection are evident at even these early stages.
I just wish I had the funds to build another barn next to the one you already have and all of the materials for both vessels as then we could help each other build our dream hulls.
Sorry if that sounds invasive as I do not mean it that way it is meant as a compliment as to the level of skill and dedication you're showing in this build.
Had I the money I would happily pay for the materials for both vessels and work under you as your apprentice, the education would be more than worth the cost of materials.
It would also help in that you'd have another set of hands dedicated to the build of both vessels and I would get to finally finish a dream I've had my entire life.
Build my own Yacht while at the same time being able to help someone else build their's.
I've always wanted to see someone building a custom Yacht with another person building their's right along side them as I truly believe even though you'd be building two vessels it would be as fast if not faster to build two together with a friend.
Just the silly ramblings of a now old man but I've had that dream since I was a teenager...
Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...
Congratulations. Ist piece of your new boat. A proud moment.
Another great video from the Ran team! Your content is always such nice quality. Thanks for sharing your ventures.
Thankyou 👍
The stem shape reminds me of Viking ship
Thank you for sharing another "week in the life of". It was reassuring to see you taking the risks with asbestos seriously and wearing the appropriate Hazmat-suit. Also, the "Building Inspector" approved of your roofing job, I heard her!!! Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪.
I enjoyed this video, especially the time you took to show us the beautiful cranes.
Nice content this week. Very fortunate the low wind day for the lift work. One cannot minimize the ppe issues in asbestos contact situations. Love your content dudes.🎉🎉🎉🎉👊🤙🖖🖖🖖👍👍
Stay safe and we'll see you next week.
First real plank is a champagne toast kind of a day!
Nice to see the work boots!
Volvos...ya just gotta love them!
Have been around almost since the beginning and will be there for a long time to come . Thanks as always!!
I have been watching Acorn to Arabella since their first video. While I love the hand tool building of Arabella I am equally enjoying the more modern techniques you guys are doing here. Its been great sofar
Amazing. Johan is there anything you cannot do? (Malin you are an amazing video creator!)
Shaping:I know you will use an electric planer but for the final strokes you really need a farrier's rasp. Work from a centerline. Get some mylar packing tape to put on anything you don't want your epoxy glue-ups to stick to. It works better than masking tape because it is slicker.
I didn't know about the Mylar. I use regular packing tape which works fairly well, but occasionally it lets epoxy under it. Must see if I can find a supplier of the Mylar.
Great to see the next video. I just commented, before watching.
That roof looks perfect! Great job!
You had a crane and Cranes! The birds sounded like little elephants.
Nice editing with wildlife around your farm..😊
great repair to your roof, i`ve just watched the video of the couple who bought your boat kinda sad to see the name taken off and changed but it will not be long for RAN III happy days
Whats the name of the video?
What channel please?
Sailing Tela Ru 😊
In Asian cultures Cranes are a good sign of health, safety and a good life. In these cultures mothers pray the wings of a crane will keep their children safe. 👍😊🖖🇺🇸
Nice work, & glad you made the hill in the mud. Guess Plan B would have been to get a neighbors tractor to make it up the hill.
Lucky you to all the Crains, the most beutyfull birds i know! I have this year one pair flying over (yet)our old farm🕊🇸🇪 Barbro EvanderLindquist Sweden (Sorry for the bad spelling) A lonly Crain was aktually one of the cause that done our bying of this place!
All the necessary jobs that come alongside building a boat but don’t actually count directly are a pain. Good job on the roof and congrats on the first real piece of your boat
I love that CNC Router. What an amazing tool to make the best of the situation always. I'm intrigued by this stuff every week. I watch from the Philippines with joy.
Great Video !
Hope you get to sail in your little boat soon!
And hope your family all is well.
Oh, this will take a year or two. Soon is not the right word to describe the timeline. But they will get it done!
@@boomerangfishact6754 Thanks, but I refer to the little boat they bought last summer.
We hope so too! Summer is on it’s way! 😊 Cheers!
Wow mate my hat off to you that’s going to look awesome a real shipwright looking forward to seeing this project till the end your channel tally ho and sailing yaba our the best
The cranes must have got a grant from John Cleese‘s „ Ministry of Silly Walks“! 😂
😂
@RANSailing Jokes apart, thanks for your amazing videos!
Lost my sh*t when you said “right now we have so many cranes around the farm” 😂
I am still amazed at how you know all of this. I can barely change a lightbulb without a TH-cam video of it. 😄
When laminating wood together with epoxy it is important to wet both meeting surfaces to ensure a good bond. Wetting just one face can result in the joint failing. Slightly thickened epoxy (with colloidal silica) is recommended too.
That depends on how much epoxy you apply and the clamping pressure. Cheers!
I cannot get my head around how the CNC router works, it’s an amazing piece of equipment.
I did software engineering and I can almost figure out the program required. Back in my day it would have to be attached to an external computer because the memory and storage would have been too big to fit in a machine that size. A 1 gig disk drive was the size of a shoe box back in the early 90s.
Now you have a unique and characterful roof. 🙂👋
Love the cranes that came to visit you. They are magical birds.
Ive seen some French Elen production Catamarans with shaped solid rubber bow blocks ....to absorb nocks with docks and floating objects...
Its the same as they ise on HGV trailers to protect whilst reversing into loading bays or careless car drivers ...
that's a bunch of great wood, was so lucky you found that.
Looking great, can't wait till finished
Superb job
Looking good.
Great work Johann🤙
Peace and love to your family.
Drone shots without a drone!!!!!!!
Thank you
Yay 🎉 this is exciting. I’m learning so much. Thank you for sharing your life with us. 🙌🤗❤
I know your not at work! But you are
doing a high risk activity on a Boom Lift. A Safety Harness clipped onto the bucket will prevent you being flicked overboard. Ouch, sorry to criticise. I love the country you live in, different to Australia. Best wishes. Pat
Instead of a boat, I`ll bua a crane! It seems more fun!
Kul att följa er, Ni är grymma. Skulle det gå att hyra in sig en vecka, har alltid drömt om att segla!
Allt gott, Mvh Henning
In Britain you are rarely far(in the countryside)from the sound of Pheasants Like Rabbits bought into our country to be hunted by Nobility So the Canada Geese we have is the nearest we get to wildlife, Cranes I imagine are twice the size and twice the danger to country folk Love that which you do Thank You
the mighty Volvo wagon :)
Awesome!
Interesting! I'm just right now figuring out how should I make the stem as well. And it's going to be quite different from yours! We'll see how that goes! 😅
We have similar cranes in out fields in michigan. Still under a foot or two of snow so it will be a couple months before they show.
Great job on the roof repair ,video and beginning of the oak bow. I like that your using that shaper router to cut the shape out that really cool. Wondering the reason why your use epoxy glue would regular wood glue work also ? Thanks Jason from Athens Al
I guess you could use regular wood glue for this, especially since this piece will be glassed over. But epoxy is stronger, cures better when it’s cold (in my opinion) and doesn’t need a lot of clamping pressure.
Thanks for watching! 👍Cheers! /Johan
Johan: Jack of all trades and evidently master of them all too -- except automotive hill-climbing. LOL!
Outstanding….you seem to have the right set of tools..and the right brand as well😊
Thanks Frans! Hope all is well. Cheers!
yes!! loving the progress! good work :)
I always stagger joints in timber laminates. I think you have the central joint in the stem all along the same line. It could be a source of weakness perhaps
If you think that lift is scary (and you'd be right) check out the 70M+ lifts in use on SpaceX booster in a rather windy Boca Chica Texas.
Seeing as you had a small problem getting the lift to the farm because of the road condition, have you thought about moving a multi ton boat from the farm to the water? Great Video.
Did Vera get a ride in the lift???
And yes, they do move a lot. I used to drive a 120' lift at work and that really moved around.
