The Concert in Central Park, released in February 1982 on Warner Bros. Records, is the first live album by American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel. It was recorded on the 19th September 1981 at a free benefit concert on the Great Lawn in Central Park, New York City, where the pair performed in front of an audience reported at the time as 500.000 people. Later estimates determined that the maximum number of people who could fit in the park space was 48.500. A film of the event was shown on TV and released on video. Proceeds went toward the redevelopment and maintenance of the park, which had deteriorated due to lack of municipal funding. The concert and album marked the start of a three-year reunion of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.

Isn't there something great about being at a concert that you were excited to go to, but it turned out to be a HUGE event. I know this doesn't compare, but we were at the U2 Concert at Joe Louis Arena and Dana Carvey was brought into a live feed to play drums while he was playing Garth on SNL. A great night. We sure could use a bridge over America's troubled waters right now.........God help us find out way.

No one, and I mean NO ONE sings "Bridge Over Troubled Water" like Art Garfunkel. He was born to sing that song.
Considering the difference of opinion between Simon and Garfunkel, leading to heated arguments and so on, an interviewer once asked Paul Simon why he'd kept working with Art Garfunkel. Simon replied, "Have you ever heard an angel sing?"

"Bride over troubled water", "Scarborough fair", "wake up little susie" nobody sing that in a better way than these both.
It was said in a quote that Simon regretted giving it to Art to sing because "It was my song", but the fates did a wonderful job letting Garfunckel lead on that one. His voice certainly is out of this world. I watched some liner notes and I guess Art didn't want to sing it, amazing how things work out is it not? When I am warming up to lead singing at church, if I can I run through it once to make sure I can almost reach a low falsetto. Thank you men for your music.

In 1968, I was 21 year old Catholic senior in college. During a practice-teaching assignment, I met a 17 year old Jewish high school senior.
Seven weeks later, we were engaged. We couldn't date like normal couoles, for fear that I'd be disciplined for dating a student.
We sat at the Connectticut shore and listened to S&G for hours and hours.
In January, I lost this man--my husband of almost 54 years. The music of S&G brings me so much comfort now.

Wow. I was in Tennessee in college at the time and I just remember wanting to be there so very bad. I watch this concert now at least once a month. You’re very lucky.

I was 13 years old and went to visit my Dad in Mid-town Manahattan on his lunch / dinner break. We walked into Central Park and passers by told us that Simon & Garfunkel were going to reunite and do a show...for free! This is probably one of my happiest childhood memories! I remember Dad scrambelling to find a payphone to call-in and let them know he wasn't planning on coming back from lunch! I'm so greatful that this was recorded for properity and it showed up on my playlist! This was the NYC that I loved and remember! Yo, Ed! Best Mayor Ever!

I was there with my then girlfriend soon to be wife a month later and this was a great show. Certainly, brings back many memories of the early 80s. We will be celebrating our 41st anniversary at the end of this October.

When I was 10 ou 11 I used to listen to this concert in a cassete, almost in loop, everyday, in my home, in Portugal. I simply loved and knew all the songs by heart. I know I commented several years ago, but this concert was amazing in 1981 and is still appreciated today in 2023.
I was a teen in 1981 and was a fan then. I really enjoyed this concert and was able to see it multiple times on HBO.
Now I can view it on TH-cam and it is still a wonderful concert, establishing Simon and Garfunkel as legends in the music industry.
I am with you. Art nails Bridge live, better than the record. Paul was such a good song writer. Why was there such a rich songwriting period from 1960 to 1980, never to be repeated again? There was something very special about that time window.

NYer's, and many Americans, know and remember exactly where they were when this concert played. It's just one of those iconic moments in America's history.
I remember just where I was when JFK was shot. In 1981 I was a welfare mother with two EBD children, going back to college and I was too swamped with my own life even to know that this concert took place.
I am very happy to find it now when I have the free time to appreciate it.
I worked at Gucci on 5th Ave at 21 yrs old. We walked down the street and had the most Amazing experience of my life.
The best Era ever. In music history. You cannot hear that kind of singers and blending of voices, todays sounds is just noise.
I agree and so do so many others. I am a baby boomer born 1950 it was and is the best music era with different genres all fantastic. The singers today seem to scream and all they background sound drowns some of them out.

I was at this show and it was amazing. I remember it was a beautiful early fall evening - picnicking on the lawn and the crowd was fun because everyone was so psyched to be there. Watching this video 40 years later reminds me of just how lucky I was to be there.

My S&G story : I was wounded during the Tet offensive in 1968, Flown by Medevac chopper to Tan Son Nhut Air Base where I was stabilized and shipped to U.S. Navy Hospital in San Diego California, As the Plane lifted off and the wheels clunked into place the Pilot played Homeward Bound over the P.A. system, 66 wounded Men started to Cry as it sunk in that we were indeed Homeward Bound.

500.000 people. no fighting, nobody spraying the crowd with gunfire. everyone just enjoying it like they should be. great performance. Anybody else notice the interaction when the line at the end older we get we are more a less the same {paraphrasing}. Simon gave a smile and the crowd reacted then Garfunkel put his hand on Paul's back. Great to see them both enjoying their company and playing together. The crowd danced all night.

In February 2009, I flew back to New Jersey to be with my only child, son, who was a US Coast Guard Seaman at Sandy Hook, New Jersey USCG station- #1343 BAINBRIDGE ISLAND. I'd never flown alone before - imagine that - 53 years old - flying alone. I stared out the United window the entire time, anxious, eager, listening to Bookends, Bridge Over Troubled Water, from California to Newark. It was the first time we'd ever been apart. After I landed in Newark and got my rental car withOUT GPS, I found a radio station, and just as Simon and Garfunkel's AMERICA came on the radio singing about getting lost at the New Jersey Turnpike - I WAS GETTING LOST ON THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE. I will NEVER FORGET THAT. AND my son and I had GREAT time celebrating his 19th birthday in Time Square at The Shark Fin where an East Bay California uncle told me his nephew cooked - and he indeed took 'care' of us. We then took flowers to Trinity Church for my Los Angeles coworker who died on Flight 11 on 9/11/2001. I will never forget the wonderful people of New York and New Jersey. And every time I hear 'AMERICA' and 'AMERIAN TUNE' I start to cry. Thank you, Paul and Art. From a young baby boomer military mom in kommiefornia. You have NO idea how much joy you gave hundreds of millions of us from the 60s until now. THANK YOU.

Almost 40 years have passed since playing this concert. The boy who was a middle school student is now faces 60 years old. Really time flows like an arrow.
Actually 42 years. A middle school student at that time would be between 52 and 56 years old.

I was a hard core metalhead back then, but I still enjoyed the heck out of this concert. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel have some amazing voices!

This is simply amazing. I was about 15 when our national TV broadcasted "The Concert in Central Park". Later on my mother purchased the double album. I couldn't have enough of it. At the time I was into Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Cure, U2, Iron Maiden, Marillion, Dire Straits... All very different styles. But these were songs from about the time I was born (1969). It was a surprise for both my parents and myself that I liked this so much. Today, at 54, I found myself singing along and remembering every word to every song. It's been some 30 years since I last listened to that album. This just proves that some artists and their songs are timeless.
Is it just me who loves the tone of Paul’s voice? Whilst Art is quite rightly lauded for his spectacular vocal skills, Paul’s voice has a luminous and really quite special tone which I absolutely adore! ❤

One of the greatest NYC nights. I was at this concert, nothing but joy all around. a must see video for all generations. It's a good reminder of how great they were and Paul Simon's younger voice and extraordinary songwriting talent.
Yep Paul was the dominate one but no denying how their voices harmonized to one perfectly. They have no equal.
These two had such a beutiful dark sound with their voices together. A beautiful dark sound, obviously recognized with the Sounds of Silence and Bridge. But all their other stuff had the same quality just so amazing it will never be duplicated., Simons guitar is so majestic just like John Denver, Garf wether his hands were in his front pockets, back pockets, or on the mic. The dude was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. Wish I would have seen them live.

They get along like brothers who always fought. They've known each other since they were in early grade school. Art grew up 3 too 5 blocks from Paul. So that's over 70 years so far, they are both still alive! Do you have a sibling that you love but can only stand to be around them for a certain amount of time?

@@giannecarlob3937 They have always been friends. When they stopped working together they still stayed friends. After their split they have more concerts and shows they have done together over the decades than many groups did in their entire careers.
Paul Simon said in front of Art Garfunkel on a talk show that they grew up together as kids. They were in elementary school together and formed Simon and Garfunkel in Junior Highschool.
Paul said because they knew each other so well since they were children that being around each other 24/7 for over 20 years had to stop because their closeness made them know how to irritate each other. When they were bored traveling together they would both try to get under each other's skin. They started this when they were just kids. You can probably find the video on TH-cam.
They both said there was never a time that they were not best friends. They mutually realized it was time to stop touring together and create music separately.
Doing the same thing years on end is difficult at best to do.
When I was in 4th grade our music teacher played their music over and over again. She then said u will never forget their music for the rest of ur lives.
I'm now in my 50s and I still remember it like it was yesturday. I wish I could see her again... just to thank her for introducing us to the best singers that ever played!!!
Me and my grandpa spent my teen years debating and inspecting every moment of this show... some of the healthiest moments of my growing up years.
The lyric "how terribly strange to be 70" hits differently these days.
I was there with my dad. We're from Indianapolis but went there 2 times a year for the jewelry show. I remember the day as clear as it was yesterday. Also talked to Paul outside an off Broadway show called Billy Bishop Goes to War at intermission standing outside. He was kind to me.
Paul Simon is a good man, very humble. He extended his hand to Art before they started.
I have to wonder if Simon and Garfunkel had any idea they would draw the crowd that they did. Estimated to be 500,000 people. I would have been freaking! This is one of the best live concerts I've ever seen!

Linda Ronstadt is thee greatest but most under appreciated voice of all time. The woman could literally sing the phone book and make the hair on the back your neck stand up.

Paul Simon is a musical and poetical genius. Art Garfunkel adds an almost angelic, other-worldly quality to it.
Paul Simon is such an amazing musician, but there is something so magical when Art sings lead and Paul harmonizes. Bridge Over Troubled Water is a masterpiece and Art sings it perfectly, and Richard Tee is on the piano I swear he's one of the best pianists I've ever heard!!! I used to listen to The Boxer on replay years ago and never got tired of it! The Sound of Silence is still my all-time favorite song. Disturbed's version is excellent, but imo Simon and Garfunkel still did it best!
They were 40 years old here. Had nothing to prove. Had done it all by then - together & solo. At their peak. How lucky to have this concert for posterity. How great to be a Baby Boomer to have lived thru these years with Simon & Garfunkel as our musical voice.
I'm a genX'r barely(I think it ended in 1965) lol and I love SIMON & GRAFUNKEL. I was almost 17 at this concert. I will say this, my parents had S&G albums,8 tracks, cassettes all over the house. I heard their music and Fleetwood Mac's RUMORS, CCR, almost daily back in the 1970's. EDIT: additional content.

"I have come to look for America" as a flight attendant with Swissair in the early 80s. I always listened to Simon & Garfunkel sitting in the crew bus after long flights from Europe, the bus, that brought us downtown. Their magical songs, the landscape passing by, it felt like everything was possible. And it was. Thank you for this very special music.

Whether you're a fan of S and G or not, it's hard to deny that "Bridge over Troubled Waters" is one of the greatest songs of all time.....a masterpiece, brilliantly performed here

One of the greatest concerts that I can remember! And I've seen a few in my time. Loved these two,,,,, My new husband and I insisting on watching them against my beloved Dad's objections. Not that he disliked them, just that he thought it was a waste of time. Well, needless to say it was the BEST!!!

@@pouetpouetdaddy5well they had adifficult period just prior to this concert if I remember correctly. They did a comcert later for new orleans, that was almost as mesmerizing, and the lyrics hit home even harder them visualising the actual age of most of their lyrics
poor artie. at the beginning, he was very nervous and trying to relax. his arm movements at the end of songs were so stiff his new harmonies didn't always work. especially in 'america'. paul could have made it easier.

Walking around the eerie streets of NYC during the pandemic lockdown the lyrics of The Sound of Silence seemed prophetic 😮 Anyone else felt that?
The world may never again see a vocal duo like these two men formed. Their voices formed perfect unisons and translucent harmonies of crystalline clarity and effortless beauty. It is a pity they were so ill suited to be around each other personally. Their voices sang of peace and harmony but they were imperfect men who could not abide each other and were easily set to anger by any perceived slight. Who knew that this concert would offer the world the last opportunity to hear these musical giants in peak form? The musical wonders that could have been created by these two as partners since 1981 are too great to contemplate. Instead this concert is a sort of musical epitaph for one of the greatest musical duos in music history. We can only marvel at their brilliance as we observe this remarkable document of musical expression in living form. I wish for peace for these two giants of music, but somehow I fear they will leave this planet very unsatisfied with how their lives turned out and the many questions of what might have been.
Well hardly an epitaph as they reunited several times since for tours and released the 'Old Friends' album very successfully.I also doubt either of them will leave the Earth less satisfied for not staying, musically, where they were in the 60s. Simon is equally remembered for putting World Music on the map with some ground-breaking solo records. Garfunkel has also produced his share of solo work. There is no saying they want to be back in their youth just because we prefer their music then.As for their arguments; they've had an on-off friendship for 70 years - more than any of their marriages have lasted but professionally they don't want the same things. I hardly think either of them will lose any sleep over it. They sound pretty chilled!

I put this show up there with Queen in Philly in '76, Pink Floyd in 19⁷7 on their Animals tour, and seeing Frampton in 1976. Al EPIC! I was about 15 then.

Loved this album back in the day and still do of course. Twenty five years later it still inspired me to travel from Australia to the USA and made a point of visiting Central Park New York! ... An added bonus was stumbling across the John Lennon memorial and seeing the building where he lived across from it. Thank You USA.

Art's vocals were over dubbed post production for the most part, because his actual vocals weren't very good. Also, he doesn't use his higher harmonies for a lot of the parts he does on the album version. He mostly just sings with Paul on his scale.

I'm from Brazil, when I was 14 years old I watched this concert on a black and white tv, I always imagined what it would be like to be in a spectacle of this magnitude, I never managed to, but I had the opportunity after 7 years to live in Boston, where I had the opportunity to visiting Central Park and I imagined them singing there where I was at that moment, in a place where I saw on black and white TV, it was very emotional that marked my life.

I was going to Rutgers in Newark. I took the day off to go early to this concert so I could get a good seat. I brought a Purple Fiorucci T-shirt. It was an amazing experience. I bumped in to a couple of people from North Bergen, NJ.
