I greatly appreciated your 4 part series on “car painting”. It gave me the confidence & basic knowledge I needed to paint my 1949 Willys. A genuine Thanks to you.
Thanks to generous enthusiasts like you Trev I managed to rust-repair, prepare and paint my '72 Lancia last month in my garage and it came out beautiful (after light color sand and polish), the whole paint process cost me less than $500. Now doing my son's '73 Datsun. Never painted or welded etc before. Many thanks to you, and Happy 2022!
What a great story. I reckon Trev has contributed so much to the restoration of cars and raised all of our skills to a higher level we’d have taken years to achieve. It’s like a free and fun apprenticeship…which I can say from experience don’t always go hand in hand!
Thanks for looking after the average joker who's trying to have a crack in their shed :) These videos do make a difference - I've learnt so many extra skills!
great vid as always, good bit of music.the cass carnaby 5 with the great Potty eye Parry were legendary local band in Bristol uk in 80s.Fantastic point stating behavior of different paints and also paint matches from different schemes.BMC Russet brown in ppg flowline matched with no drama ,sikken autofine big drama.the days of jga and 43 and 30 air caps.loads of overspray
Trev, Your videos helped me a great deal in my restoration project. I am now done with paint and am stating to put the car (MGB) back together. The point about practice with the paint and gun is the required step. Please add a little up front instruction on setting up the gun each time you spray. Paper on wall, proper spray pattern, fluid control all the stuff you take for granted given your experience. Thanks again.
Thank you for the update. I was just wondering how you guys were doing because there hadn’t been an update from either you or Bird in quite some time... and these are strange times! I appreciate your experience and how you break down and simply the steps for us. Certainly odd times we are in, and I loved the end! 🎚 Stay safe and healthy!!
Great timing for my nervous friend about to dive in to sprucing up his classic car! Always great content mate. Have an amazing and creative 2022 and thanks for all the effort you go to. Absolutely the best educator on YT.
Hi...Trev thankyou for all the great videos and blogs. I've been watching for a while now and I really appreciate you encouraging us to do. You gave me the courage and confidence to tackle the rocker panels on my truck. Cut out the old and weld in the new. It was a lot of work. But fun to see it to the finished result. That was two years ago. Happy new year's eve and all the best in 2022.
Happy new year! I appreciate all the tips you share. A little common sense goes a long way. At the end of the day we are each responsible for our own results. The info to get the best results per your paint is out there. A practice wing is great advice.
Thanks Trev 😁 brilliant covering flow rates, clarifies why I had so many runs in 2k panel going for a good finish, but rushing a bumper with the same mix gave a perfect'ish finish Happy New Year to all!
Hi Trev, great content yet again. You mentioned the old folklore theory of wet flatting adding moisture to primer, in my personal experience it unfortunately did. I repaired a rear wheel arch on my car 17 years ago and had the whole side painted. Unfortunately after almost 17 years of dry storage I have blisters in the paint on the sill cover, one has been popped which is showing the primer that was applied over the original factory paint.
Trev! Happy New Year, my friend!! Another great video! By the way, when I worked at a body shop, I used circular motions with a sanding block too. I had great results with it. Cheers, man!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill! Hope you and your's had a very Merry Christmas and wishing you a wonderful New Year! As an aside..... It seems you really like music and I was wondering if you've ever checked out the young Norwegian artist Aurora? Great stuff! Cheers!
Hi Trev, Thank you for this mini series it will be very useful in the spring when I hope to be at paint stage. However, I will be spraying my chassis at some point over the next couple of months using the same Rustbusters product you used. Their website was very helpful too and went on to talk about Dew Point and the implications it can have on your finished paint work. I guess it's not too much of a concern if you have a heated garage but it could be a tragedy waiting to happen if you don't have the right balance of conditions for any type of painting application. To be honest I hadn't given it a thought as I have a dehumidifier running 24/7 but now I know about it I will be calculating the Dew Point on any day I'm painting. Kind regards Paul from 48 Spokes 👍👍
Thank you so much for all those videos, as informative as they are entertaining to watch. It's mostly thank to you that i started a new project: a pedal car version of a 1920 hudson super six racing car for my daughter. I may use a bit of advice concerning the bodywork. I planned to use 0,8 mm steel, but i'm now considering 1 or 1,5mm aluminium to reduce the weight. Is there any differences working with aluminium that i may be unaware of? Thanks again!
Aluminium is different from steel. There are different grades which have different characteristics. To be able to weld aluminium you will need to use an ac/dc TIG welder. Aluminium is softer so in many easier to shape. Definitely a lot lighter. Check out this channel, he makes kids cars from aluminium! th-cam.com/users/scarlettsgarage1
Hi trev,i will be doing my own resprays soon, and will be practising how to mix paints, how long did it take you to get the correct ratio's as i have a car I want to respray, it will be a high gloss black, but wondered if you can give us some tutorials on how to mix to get the correct amount each time, and what type of spray gun would you recomend for best results, cheers trev...👍
This is part 4 I think I covered equipment and guns a bit in part 1 of this series. I also did a useful video on mixing small batches of paint acutely here th-cam.com/video/nyP9A-WqxuA/w-d-xo.html cheers Trev 👍
Thanks trev, I'll watch it,i just want perfect the technique,as i don't want to make any mistakes, although being a newby to this thing i will expect some marginal errors..👍
i was interested in how you set the gun? I thinky ou said before you put it so its on full amount comming out? also how to set the fan? I painted a mini bootlid in 2k white today, and i got a run, i think i was going for too much of a finish as you said and it has flowed. thanks for the vids and happy new year
Great tips thank you. What paint do you use for guide/trace coat black spray can? I use upol guide coat aerosol but it's not ideal and meant more for dry sanding... Is there a 2k friendly guide for wet sanding you can recommend? Something that won't react (like cheap enamel) in case I miss a tiny pit or edge.
I’ve personally never had a problem with cellulose type semi matt black aerosol. Another guide coat in an aerosol I’ve used is made by HB Body, I personally liked it because it was less like powder more like light paint. Cheers Trev 👍
Good to see you back trev. I noticed you had a filter mask on spraying 2k mate Iv alway bin under the impression I need air feed mask for 2k as in had bad things init is this right?
p100 masks will do if the time is short "in the booth" all day as a job yes forced air/fresh air is best and youll go through less filters. a p100 will last a few hours maybe 2 shifts (read the mask and paint data)
I’ve wet sanded my primer to 3000 grit ready for metallic paint and clear coat. I’m being told that this is too fine and the paint won’t stick. Can you provide some advice please.
Hi Dominic yes 3000 is probably too fine. You’ve got to get the surface to a point where the sanding marks won’t show through but it’s rough enough for the paint to stick. The paint sticks in the grooves that the sanding material leaves behind (mechanical adhesion) If you’re applying base coat silver can be a bit tricky with leaving sanding marks, I normally flat it down with 800 then finish off with 1200. If it’s a metallic blue red etc then 800 is normally absolutely fine. The best advice in the world is to do a test panel. You’ll know in advance of painting the car that your procedure was correct 👍

Painted my Mx5 with direct gloss using a devilbiss FLG5 gun... So easy to use and finish was awesome. Highly recommend this gun for hobbyists
Thanks for the recommendation. A few other viewers have also raved about this gun, sounds like a great choice 👍

But it wasnt epoxy primer back then and this is why. Acrylic primers did drink water. Leave a car in that primer for long and it would rust out.

@@trevsblog thanks, we've been working hard over Christmas to get it all sorted.
Who makes the sanding block? Is that Dynabrade? I have their vacuum DA and vacuum cleaner. Works awesome, zero dust
Sounds great 👍 The one in the video is actually a 3M block, I often use Mirka Abranet on it 👍

General rule of thumb, paint volume maximum and fan maximum for top coats. Adjust air pressure to suit. 👍

It seams like a distressed sign could have some dents, scratches and imperfections.

Any old farts besides me remember spraying single-stage Centari with either 792S or 793S hardner???
