I should have saved the game because that was something, and I'm sure I forgot something. The craziest part is that it was HO on HO and the match lasted like 25 turns at most We basically both look ourselves in the eyes and said "aight, that's bullshit" and my opponent just went "I definitely didn't deserve the win" and we simply laughed it off. There's a point where it just becomes laughable, like the infamous battle where KB just flinches an entire team to death with Iron Head, you can't even get mad at some point
I found it strange that Moody was nerfed in gen 8 to not affect accuracy or evasion, but Acupressure wasn't. I'm assuming what you mentioned in this video is the reason

Especially at the end of a turn without wasting your round. Even if your stats are lower, your mon will survive longer and make up for the stat loss. Or would lol
Moody is better without evasion or accuracy because it can roll important stats, for example if glalie gets a speed boost it can disable, sub, etc, to keep the moody going, same with defense.

Lower tiers often ban weather setting abilities so this leads to many mons losing what made them viable in the tiers that banned their ability so they tumble into pu
UU and under tiers outright ban weather abilities, meaning those mons are forced to use their shittier less useful abilities instead , just like shadow tag and how wobuffet is simultaneously untiered and ubers
Politoad was OU just beacuse it set up rain, even though it was terrible otherwise, it had encore and that was about it. Pelliper has instant recovery, defog, u-turn, and a garenteed to hit hurricane. once pelliper got drizzle it just became a better politoad, so no one used politoad and it fell down the teirs. however setting up weather without a turn invesment is still kinda broken cus of how much weather does, so the lower tiers ban the weather setting abilities due to them being broken. the problem is most weather setting pokemon are only good beacuse they instantly set the weather, so they are terrible with those abilities banned.
Pelliper is the best rain setter it has reliable reviver in roost, hazard removal in defog, u-turn for momentum or to get a dangerous rain sweeper in, heavy duty boots negate its stealth rock weakness, toxic to spread status or scald for burns and a powerful 100% accurate hurricane and is decently bulky
Weird. I play National Dex Mono constantly. I don't think I've literally ever encountered an Accupressure Drapion, and I've been playing this format since Gen7.
But that means that Z-Acupressure is also banned? It's so good on Sniper Drapion since it technically increases your damage by more than Swords Dance (guaranteed 2.25x crits on Night Slash and Cross Poison) AND a random 2x stat boost, which could turn you into a murder machine with +2 in Attack or Speed.

@@kgrg31 So Detect has the same effect as Protect, right? However, Z-Detect raises Evasion. So there was a somewhat common Riolu strategy of using Z-Detect and then Prankster Substitute to stall out the opponent. Some points brought up against it were that: 1) Detect is the same as Protect and nearly everything learns it, so Detect was basically used solely for the Fightinium Z combo 2) getting a free Evasion boost (since Detect protects you from damage and status) meant it was way more powerful than other Z-Evasion moves and 3) It bypassed Evasion clause. It was quickbanned, people got angry as hell that the council did the ban without any discussion and they reverted the ban a day later. Then they did a suspect test and it was banned for good. I'm planning a strat for my Monobug LC run of Unbound that involves Baton Passing Spider Web to a Skorupi with Acupressure so it can freely set up on Alice's Gliscor, which can't even hit Skorupi once it's out of Earthquakes. Acupressure is inconsistent, but it's still rather fun in Doubles when paired with Simple. I can't vouch for its viability, though.

Yeah, the reasoning here doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. I’d guess tht this ban only went through because monotype is a relatively small tier, so won’t cause a lot of waves. Reminds me of when NU tried to complex ban contrary Serperior after its hidden ability released. It actually got through because the NU council was pretty separated from the central Smogon community.
I miss gen 6 that was where my favorite team shined magic bounce espeon with hp fire, calm mind, stored power, and dark pulse, a crit focused drapion, pixilate sylveon with hyper voice were my main 3

To put it into perspective, something like Z-Sand Attack, a Z-MOVE that you can use ONCE and has insane opportunity cost, is banned cause it raises evasion in one stage.

I'm a big fan of Accupressure in general. Whenever the enemy gets an Evasion boost (at least on Showdown and Smogon lobbies), their brain just turns off and they let themself get ruined by Wide Lens, Scope Lens, Keen eye, Defog, Pain Split, Weather accuracy, Shadow Punch, Shock Wave, and even No Guard and Topsy-Turvey too sometimes which is crazy cuz those two are pretty obvious lol

It's the same idea, they're luck-based gimmick items. In many cases using one has very little opportunity cost; held items are important, but not enough that a gimmick item ruins your team.

And to answer the other items, is just why the hell do you want them to stay? Also the evasion stuff benefits to everyone, and the king rock only benefits fast offensive Pokémon who don't rely on a boosting item (being Cloyster the only exception because of his boosting speed move, multi hit and the fact that he doesn't need any power boost object at all, a life orb don't make him closer to a 2HKO or a 0HKO of an important check/counter and his bulk is really good even when lowered so no need of sash or white herb. Kinda stupid that they just dont ban the move in other tiers, considering that it would be considered banworthy for being unhealthy as long as it is has a minimum resemblance of viability.
The thing is, Drapion (the only viable user of Acupressure given it is reasonably bulky and hits hard anyways) would never run a risky set up move when it can hit hard anyways and also is known to be able to be a crit machine so it may not even have to set up with Acupressure. It is also the fact that Acupressure is a move wasted unless it boosts the stat you need, so they don’t need to ban Acupressure because no one would ever seriously run Acupressure.

There is nothing that makes Acupressure stronger there, only that you have other pkm slots with poison stab and toxic spikes. Acupressure is a gimmick but it could potentially became viable in a tier where Drapion counters something (most likely a psychic), granting you a turn where Accupressure has a 1/6 chance of getting that +2 evasion boost that might win you the game. If you can sweep Mono ground with knock off + eq + substitute, i dont see how that couldnt work (albeit inconsistenly) in a lower tier as well. Sure, swords dance might be more consistant but that doesnt prevent someone from getting a win with Accupresure in a situatiom where swords dance wouldnt have made it. Tldr: yes, acupressure its bad, but if it became any good, it would get banned. Then just ban it alredy.
So basically it was actually viable and we can't be having something unconventional being viable. If they hate random chance, why are moves with percentile chance secondary effects and moves with less than 100 accuracy allowed? Why are the Confused and Frozen statuses allowed? Why are multi-hit moves without Skill Link allowed? Why is Harvest allowed? In fact, why are any direct damage moves allowed considering damage variation rolls? The only moves should be dealing damage with hazards, status, Seismic Toss, Night Shade, and Dragon Rage!
I was confused by what Monotype was for a while there. I thought it meant no Drapion cause you couldn't use dual-types. Then I figures it out. Wonder if there is a format where you only use single-type pokemon.
One thing that still confuses me is how you say people don't use something for being unreliable and inconsistent but than mention alot of things similar to that are banned. Is there some kinda line in the sand where something loses to itself/ works just often enough to be worth using in smogon ( for example galar slowbro has around a 40ish % chance to move first which is insane but pretty meh )
Probably they aren't banned because they are always strong, but because they rely too much on luck. They could go very bad or very good. I think they are banned because having to face them can be a pain, and not fun.

A good example of a not-that-broken-but-only-by-luck ability is Quick Draw. It sometimes makes a Pokémon go first in a priority bracket. If it got to go first all the time, Quick Draw would be banned for being uncompetitive especially since Galarian Slowpoke is not awful. Instead, as it is not it is banned for being too luck-based for be reliable and for being uncompetitive if it goes off.
Hello as someone from Monotypes community we blame Dieu for popularizing this strat which we all made fun off. Less than a year later it got banned. I will miss this strat but the French man will probably come up with something that sounds stupid at the time but will become viable later All I can say is we apologize for the French power shown off in this video and pray the menace of Dieu will never make such a viral strat again (Also note my comment is a joke I am not on council or anything just an avid player of the tier lol, this is one of the quickest times I’ve seen near the end of a gens lifecycle for a strat to be introduced and banned in a while)
they banned acupressure since it has the 'least collateral damage'; Drapion is a very important component for mono-Poison teams and is serviceably useful on mono-Dark, while all Acupressure really does is enable evasion cheese strats since there are better moves available for the purposes of offensive boosting
acupressure's boosts can be stacked though; if acupressure only allowed a +2 boost to a stat at maximum it might have been ok (and even then, fishing for +2 evasion might be all that they really need so it's still debatable)
I'll always think the evasion clause is stupid. especially having the abilities banned. its also really dumb in general that "luck based strategies" are always banned, like playing the odds isn't a legitimate strategy.
I agree, I'll always see a "luck based strategy" as a "risk/reward strategy" I could be running the more consistent Rough Skin Garchomp on my sand team or I could take the on average debuff in exchange fot the ~10% chance chance of dodging the opponents counter

If you make every optimal move against evasion, there's still a very good chance you will lose decisively. That's the problem, you can often look back on a loss against stall and go 'ah, I should've done/predicted this instead.' With evasion, you often just go 'f**ing bs misses cost me the game and there's nothing I could've done to change anything' and, unlike stall, this happens to _everyone_ evasion faces.
Acupressure may be uncompetitive but it's shit. Having to run black sludge and sub and accupressure just to have a +2 special attack or defvs a special mon or speed when you outspeed.. Like just tap sword dance my dude

Either Zacian form is also uncompetitive in Ubers but there is no luck. You know it will take a Pokémon down. Any Kyurem set in OU is uncompetitive because you know it will stall and kill by stalling or by its good moveset; there is also no luck to that. Any Aurora Veil shenanigans in UU or lower is uncompetitive because you know there will be a setup sweeper ready to 6-0 an opposing team; there is not luck to that. Not every uncompetitive aspect is luck-based.
the peak of uncompetitiveness is full Baton Pass teams; you either lose to the team on preview because you don't have a specific countermeasure to handle any of the 6 Baton Passers at once (since if your BP counter loses to one member of the team, it can't stop the BP chain), or you do have the appropriate countermeasure and basically insta-win. Imagine battles being decided before they even start, that is the epitome of uncompetitive.
Not sure that I agree with luck based strats being uncompetitive. If it’s a high risk high reward strat then it’s not a guarantee to work every time. I get that Drapion has the best way of utilising the move, so why not just band Drapion from having it instead of making the move entirely redundant? I just don’t think it’s right to get salty if someone decides of their own fruition to use a move that isn’t guaranteed to give them what they want. Luck is part of the game after all.

Unfortunately anything that boosts evasion by even a single stage is enough to make Smogon shit itself, so this was inevitable after the Moody ban.

I'm a big fan of Accupressure in general.
Whenever the enemy gets an Evasion boost (at least on Showdown and Smogon lobbies), their brain just turns off and they let themself get ruined by Wide Lens, Scope Lens, Keen eye, Defog, Pain Split, Weather accuracy, Shadow Punch, Shock Wave, and even No Guard and Topsy-Turvey too sometimes which is crazy cuz those two are pretty obvious lol

It's the same idea, they're luck-based gimmick items. In many cases using one has very little opportunity cost; held items are important, but not enough that a gimmick item ruins your team.

And to answer the other items, is just why the hell do you want them to stay? These items only benefits luck based, not teambuilding, not strategy, nothing else than luck, so they don't add anything good to the meta aside from making it more luck based that already is. Also the evasion stuff benefits to everyone, and the king rock only benefits fast offensive Pokémon who don't rely on a boosting item (being Cloyster the only exception because of his boosting speed move, multi hit and the fact that he doesn't need any power boost object at all, a life orb don't make him closer to a 2HKO or a 0HKO of an important check/counter and his bulk is really good even when lowered so no need of sash or white herb. That's why it's ban)

@@darkotazy Cloyster works very well to setup against any physical threat (even the ones that hit him super effective) and that's what matters and that's it's utility, the spdf doesn't matter for him. It's like saying blissey is a bad ESPECIAL wall because it have bad physical defense.

Kinda stupid that they just dont ban the move in other tiers, considering that it would be considered banworthy for being unhealthy as long as it is has a minimum resemblance of viability.
The thing is, Drapion (the only viable user of Acupressure given it is reasonably bulky and hits hard anyways) would never run a risky set up move when it can hit hard anyways and also is known to be able to be a crit machine so it may not even have to set up with Acupressure. It is also the fact that Acupressure is a move wasted unless it boosts the stat you need, so they don’t need to ban Acupressure because no one would ever seriously run Acupressure.
@@iantaakalla8180 Similarly as how you can run Acupressure in Mono, you could run it in standard tiers. There is nothing that makes Acupressure stronger there, only that you have other pkm slots with poison stab and toxic spikes.
Acupressure is a gimmick but it could potentially became viable in a tier where Drapion counters something (most likely a psychic), granting you a turn where Accupressure has a 1/6 chance of getting that +2 evasion boost that might win you the game. If you can sweep Mono ground with knock off + eq + substitute, i dont see how that couldnt work (albeit inconsistenly) in a lower tier as well. Sure, swords dance might be more consistant but that doesnt prevent someone from getting a win with Accupresure in a situatiom where swords dance wouldnt have made it.
Tldr: yes, acupressure its bad, but if it became any good, it would get banned. Then just ban it alredy.

So basically it was actually viable and we can't be having something unconventional being viable.
If they hate random chance, why are moves with percentile chance secondary effects and moves with less than 100 accuracy allowed? Why are the Confused and Frozen statuses allowed? Why are multi-hit moves without Skill Link allowed? Why is Harvest allowed? In fact, why are any direct damage moves allowed considering damage variation rolls? The only moves should be dealing damage with hazards, status, Seismic Toss, Night Shade, and Dragon Rage!

One thing that still confuses me is how you say people don't use something for being unreliable and inconsistent but than mention alot of things similar to that are banned. Is there some kinda line in the sand where something loses to itself/ works just often enough to be worth using in smogon ( for example galar slowbro has around a 40ish % chance to move first which is insane but pretty meh )
Probably they aren't banned because they are always strong, but because they rely too much on luck. They could go very bad or very good. I think they are banned because having to face them can be a pain, and not fun.

@@alexisdipoalo9443I guess that's why in this case it's only banned in the format where it's most common/usable because if a lot more people are playing the set, then naturally the times where people get screwed or annoyed will happen more as well.
A good example of a not-that-broken-but-only-by-luck ability is Quick Draw. It sometimes makes a Pokémon go first in a priority bracket. If it got to go first all the time, Quick Draw would be banned for being uncompetitive especially since Galarian Slowpoke is not awful. Instead, as it is not it is banned for being too luck-based for be reliable and for being uncompetitive if it goes off.

Hello as someone from Monotypes community we blame Dieu for popularizing this strat which we all made fun off. Less than a year later it got banned.
I will miss this strat but the French man will probably come up with something that sounds stupid at the time but will become viable later
All I can say is we apologize for the French power shown off in this video and pray the menace of Dieu will never make such a viral strat again
(Also note my comment is a joke I am not on council or anything just an avid player of the tier lol, this is one of the quickest times I’ve seen near the end of a gens lifecycle for a strat to be introduced and banned in a while)

Because Drapion’s the only mon competitively using it and has other sets it can use. Maractus, for instance, isn’t using Acupressure in monomons.

they banned acupressure since it has the 'least collateral damage'; Drapion is a very important component for mono-Poison teams and is serviceably useful on mono-Dark, while all Acupressure really does is enable evasion cheese strats since there are better moves available for the purposes of offensive boosting
thank goodness because last time I encountered acupressure in monotype, it was the most depressing experience of never being able to land a hit ever 😭

acupressure's boosts can be stacked though; if acupressure only allowed a +2 boost to a stat at maximum it might have been ok (and even then, fishing for +2 evasion might be all that they really need so it's still debatable)

I agree, I'll always see a "luck based strategy" as a "risk/reward strategy" I could be running the more consistent Rough Skin Garchomp on my sand team or I could take the on average debuff in exchange fot the ~10% chance chance of dodging the opponents counter
A better question is why it's banned when Stall is authorized. Since both strategy are no brain anti fun.

If you make every optimal move against evasion, there's still a very good chance you will lose decisively. That's the problem, you can often look back on a loss against stall and go 'ah, I should've done/predicted this instead.' With evasion, you often just go 'f**ing bs misses cost me the game and there's nothing I could've done to change anything' and, unlike stall, this happens to _everyone_ evasion faces.

So uncompetitive means losing to luck.
it means losing to something you have very minimal or no control over. So yes that includes luck, but also things like shadow tag.
Either Zacian form is also uncompetitive in Ubers but there is no luck. You know it will take a Pokémon down.
Any Kyurem set in OU is uncompetitive because you know it will stall and kill by stalling or by its good moveset; there is also no luck to that.
Any Aurora Veil shenanigans in UU or lower is uncompetitive because you know there will be a setup sweeper ready to 6-0 an opposing team; there is not luck to that.
Not every uncompetitive aspect is luck-based.
the peak of uncompetitiveness is full Baton Pass teams; you either lose to the team on preview because you don't have a specific countermeasure to handle any of the 6 Baton Passers at once (since if your BP counter loses to one member of the team, it can't stop the BP chain), or you do have the appropriate countermeasure and basically insta-win. Imagine battles being decided before they even start, that is the epitome of uncompetitive.
Not sure that I agree with luck based strats being uncompetitive. If it’s a high risk high reward strat then it’s not a guarantee to work every time. I get that Drapion has the best way of utilising the move, so why not just band Drapion from having it instead of making the move entirely redundant? I just don’t think it’s right to get salty if someone decides of their own fruition to use a move that isn’t guaranteed to give them what they want. Luck is part of the game after all.
