“How much more harmful are the consequences of anger…than the circumstances that aroused them in us.” -Marcus Aurelius
According to a recent poll, 42% of Americans say they are angrier now than they were last year; 22% report feeling angry “a lot” during the day, which is a 30% increase from the previous year and a level of visceral discontent we have not seen since 2011.
It is the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher, Marcus Aurelius, who will show us how. Like all of us, Marcus had a temper. Unlike most of us, Marcus had no reason to tame it. He was a man of almost unlimited power. He could say and do whatever he wanted with no concern for the prospect of consequences.
And yet, as a man dedicated to self-mastery, he saw the importance of prevailing over the instinct to anger. In a world where people were often driven by passion over reason, where restraint was a principle followed by few, Marcus Aurelius struggled to be better. Because, as he saw it, “the nearer a man comes to a calm mind, the closer he is to strength.”

Yes, the repitilian part of brain is our reflexive reactive/subconscious mind part. The neo cortex/ logical reasoning part gets into awareness only if one is mostly in calm down state. Make more time to calm state- exercise, meditation, mindfulness, breath excercise of yoga, nature walks, pets, etc help to gradually increase calm states of mind and tame the anxious amygdala.

I agree. It’s easier said than done. For that reason, stoics put into practice certain things to gradually develop the mind to withstand sudden external stimuli. It’s just like we would lift weights to create hypertrophy just so our body would be prepared in things which require physical strength. Few examples are: fasting, early rising, enduring heat and cold, simple clothing, exercise, reading, listening well in a conversation (which is on decline), cleaning, turning boredom as a chance to self reflect and a good hobby. It all helps in literally exercising and strengthening our patience.

Raised by a man that would and did several times bite cats and dogs back. This was normal behavior to me and I was very confused when that man was always allowed to behave that way but when I acted out my learned behavior was punished. His excuse was always 'I did the best I could'....he got away with much worse. Had to leave my entire family behind to get away from the madness.

I find the Mr. Rogers comment true; I was just telling my wife that when my parents were sick, first in the hospital, then in the nursing home, there were many kind, generous, and helpful people that came out of the woodwork to help. A lot of people in those settings don't give a damn, and they are quickly forgotten soon after - the helpers you remember for a long time!

People I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous and bitter. They are like this because they do not understand the difference between good and evil. But I have seen the beauty of good and the ugliness of evil and so recognise that the wrongdoer have a nature like and related to my own, made of the same dna, stardust, with the same potential for self-awareness, self-consciousness and enlightenment. So prepared, none of them can hurt me nor implicate me in their ugliness. Neither can I hate my family, for we are all made for cooperation and the common good.

I am having issues both inside my home and directly outside of it. I suppose the only thing to do is walk away from everything and hope I dont run into issues on my walk. And if I do, keep walking?

Maybe if you take that walk not running away from something, but toward something?

The 29 folks who disliked the post don't dislike the stoic principles--they're just mad, because they ARE the angry drivers lol

I’m a black cab driver in London. That makes driving a cab in New York look like a piece of piss.
    Any ex-pat Yank knows that.
    This helps.

Can't recite the excact quote because I've forgotten parts of it, but it went something like this:
"An angry man is like an angry bull. He charges blindly straight ahead and won't stop for anything except a brick wall." -Fyodor Dostoyevski, Notes from Underground.

Socially anger is to repremand others for the benefit of the group. Absolutely it can be determental to us as an individual, but bibbing someone in a car is an attempt (usually pointless) to tell someone they're behaviour is socially unacceptable. Of course we don't do this with animals, because we know they wouldn't understand: they're (mostly) not part.of our social environment.
