I feel part of the charm is the fact that these old fighting games where he's in remember that his power is over the Electromagnetic _Spectrum,_ not just Ferromagnetism. Hence the lasers and other fun techniques he uses.
You could say something very similar about Capcom's game-design choices. "The middle-aged guy who's mostly known for the ability to control magnetic fields with his mind? We'll definitely need to give him a one-frame crouching kick."

I never understood why they decided to make an old man the FASTEST character in the game. I remember trying to walk with him in X-Men 2 the Clone Wars and it was like watching a turtle crawl uphill!

I remember when my first time PvP on MvC2. He uses magneto, psylocke and storm and i was speechless when he did an infinite using magneto alone. I just watch my 3 characters getting bodied.
A tip for you, always try to roll away even after getting hit by psylocke assist or throw so when opponent misses the otg on the last possible frame you will roll and recover. 11:14 & 12:14 are examples where you are actually safe if you tried to roll. Also, when playing as sentinel against magneto dashing in, try to first block high, then low and then immediately jump. This prevents magneto from doing a dash in jumping hk + assist combo since you are blocking high. Even if magneto does dash in crouching lk, you have super armor that prevents you from getting hit stun on the first light attack. And then immediately block low, timed it so that if the follow up from c.lk into cmk doesn't connect. After c.mk magneto will no longer be able to cancel into other normals and will most likely either call an assist to cover him to continue pressure, block or tries to tri jump you. You are basically safe after blocking the the c.mk since you can counter call an assist if he calls his to break his rush down momentum or you can just jump backwards if he blocks or tries to tri jump you. This blocking sequence nullify alot of magneto's rushdown options, apart from Yipes and Khaos, most other magneto players have problem dealing with sentinels. Which is why magneto is ranked below storm and sentinel. Lastly, try to push block as much as possible.
I'm gonna use this early comment to tell you how much I appreciate these videos. This is great for someone who is just getting into this game, like me. Plus they're just entertaining as hell. I'd love to see more of this.
0 frame moves exist. They’re usually supers. The move comes out before the opponent can do anything. So if a moves even minus 1 it’s punishable. The easiest examples I can think of is Phoenix Wrights Level 3 and most heavy supers in Garou mark of the wolves.

that infinite doesn’t fuck around, the amount of precision and execution required can’t even be put into words it’s so difficult, serious props to jmcrofts for doing the whole infinite just to demonstrate the undizzy mechanic

I remember posting some some tips on your old video when you wanted to learn it along time ago... great work! =D I like you mentioned how deadly his snap is (that's what's most scary about him imo) alot of people over look something so simple but so amazingly deadly and something that single handedly let's him surgically tear teams apart.
You should do a video focusing just on assists. It could be something like how to time them, what are some other A tier and lower assists that are playable, maybe do some teams with assists and explain some specific counter-picks. Idk something to that nature would be cool, its open to suggestions. I know this information is probably somewhere else if he hasnt already done it but I would like to hear it from jmcrofts
Great analysis, but just to add a couple more generic points, Magneto is top tier also because: 1. He has a relatively easy to do semi-infinite chaining Magnetic Tempest repeatedly. It has so many hits that even with damage scaling maxed out it still does a decent amount of damage and can usually kill someone by the third loop. 2. Unlike say Strider/Doom/Blackheart, Magneto works well with almost anyone, whether he's on point or as an assist. You have a lot of freedom with your team composition, and you'd rarely have a completely bad combination. 3. Magneto has fairly easy and safe ways to tag out and heal without using meter, the easiest being his throw. 4. His assists are also really good, apart from the projectile one, which is OK but nothing special. The launcher assist is super fast, while Hyper Gravitation keeps up constant pressure for you to maintain your offensive. All it takes is either connecting once, and you'd have your opponent wide open. Plus the positioning of Hyper Grav assist is fairly safe since he hangs back at the edge of your corner, so it's not easy for someone without beams to punish without having to deal with you first.
Skullgirls has an infinite prevention system where if you do certain normals in a combo again, you are able to break out of it. However, you can actually bait that shit into another combo. Reset.
Wish you would have made it a little longer and gone into the history of Magneto in teams from the beginning and how he evolved when people figured out how good he is with psylocke assist. Id like to hear more history about how team compositions evolved over time
Dude, I gotta say something here that is very real to me. You have a great attitude for fighting games. You're knowledgeable, you're skilled, and most importantly, you have a skill I fundamentally lack: you're cool under pressure. When you were getting beat by that Magneto player, you were still laughing and having fun and being a good sport. Against randoms, I just don't have that cool head. It gets under my skin, I get embarrassed and beat myself up. I appreciate your attitude more than anything man, and given how great the information and presentation is, that's saying a lot!
I had no idea about the starting frame data! All I know is that Sabertooth is my main character and I start all of my matches with that lightkick and regularly got the first hit even against players far better than me! What an awesome revelation!

One big thing you missed about Magneto is the fact he can cause untechable hard knockdowns using the flying screen glitch. If you do the 5 fierce combo with him they cant roll out of it and it takes a ton of damage. If you end it early though, they cant tech and they wake up in a really predictable way and have to take another mixup. And thats how the Yipes vortex was born.
I started playing MvC2 after watching this when it first came out and it’s now my favorite fighting game. This game is awesome I hope they bring it back. Tried CvS2 as well but I’m terrible and don’t understand what I’m doing lol

These games are my introduction to Marvel characters. I more so grew up with the Rockman series and street fighter I guess, but I never figured out that magneto in MVC2 was the one Sir Ian Mcellan played. I just couldn’t suss out his mutant power from MVC2.

just 3 things ROM inf has a lot of variants. Just depends on how fast you can confirm the hits and how far off the ground mag is Both Ice Grab and Hypergrab can be mashed out. Sentinel has a hard time getting out cause he's a big body from Hypergrab x Tempest.
It really was a magical time. I remember Iceman being confidently hailed as the first god tier because he didn't take chip from most projectiles and had a decent keepaway game(not to mention a devastating super). Iron Man and Warmachine got so much mileage off of repulsor blast assist and photon cannon alone, since they set up for and capitalized so well on pretty much everything. The one thing that stood out very quickly was that way too many iconic characters were practically unplayable because of their godawful health pools.
Magneto Storm Sentinel ^_^ I remember a friend trying to explain this game to me... went straight over my head... he won a bunch of tournaments using MSS, too bad this was before the era of smart phones

Both Ice Grab and Hypergrab can be mashed out. Sentinel has a hard time getting out cause he's a big body from Hypergrab x Tempest.

It really was a magical time. I remember Iceman being confidently hailed as the first god tier because he didn't take chip from most projectiles and had a decent keepaway game(not to mention a devastating super). Iron Man and Warmachine got so much mileage off of repulsor blast assist and photon cannon alone, since they set up for and capitalized so well on pretty much everything. The one thing that stood out very quickly was that way too many iconic characters were practically unplayable because of their godawful health pools.
