Watched this and your other Airpod Pro videos. Bought a refurbished iPhone and new Airpod pros. I can hear! Tested them at lunch in a restaurant and heard every word. I work with little kids and now I will be able to hear them. My hearing loss began 65 years ago with measles, worse with age. Thank you a million times.

As audiologist pointed out AP Pro2 are not hearing aids per se, they can cancel noise well, can amplify in presence of nearby your iPhone, but cannot replace a prescription hearing aids.
So with your already severe hearing loss (65%) you can not use Pro 2 as the only hearing aids, but you can use them like me (also severe hearing loss in high frequencies sound/speech range) as a music companion during your flight, or other occasions when noise cancelation is all you need to listen to music, podcasts, or else.
But yes Apple further improves this fall AirPod Pro 2 hearing capabilities especially in noisy environment.

What's nice is that these products are widely available and comparatively affordable. In my country, entry-level hearing aids can easily cost twice your months rent and most people are underinsured. The fact that these are mass produced and deliver good-not-great assistance can be very impactful.

I was researching OTC hearing aids when I stumbled across your video reviewing AirPods Pro2 as hearing aids. I have mild hearing loss and mainly wanted something to help me hear speech on the TV better. I am not ready to wear hearing aids full time and was really struggling with the thought of having to pay upwards of $1,000 for a pair of OTC hearing aids just for watching the TV. When I began my research I had tried connecting over the ear headphones to my TV via bluetooth. They did make speech clearer but they caused more problems such as not hearing what was going on around me and not hearing people speaking to me in the same room. They also became uncomfortable after an hour or so.
After watching your video I decided to try the AirPods Pro2 and found them on sale at Costco for $199. After setting them up per your instructions using a hearing test and tweaking the settings slightly for more clarity I am now sold on them. I can hear speech much better on TV while my wife sets the TV to a volume that is comfortable for her. I can hear what's going on around me and people can have a conversation with me while I am using them. I can't believe I've found a solution to my issue for only $199 rather than paying $1,000 for OTC hearing aids. They also have the benefit of my being able to use them for other things such as phone calls, music, and videos on my phone and computer with noise reduction. I have also connected them to my TV via bluetooth so there is no volume from the TV speakers when my wife is trying to watch something on her computer in the same room. Thanks again for taking the time to share this information on TH-cam. I know a lot of people can benefit from this little known use of the AirPods Pro2.

    • @Mall745
      @Mall745 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@karlaatherton The AirPods Pro are set as hearing aids as described in this video so they are not connected to the TV, they are just enhancing the sound of the TV. That way my wife is able to change the volume of the TV to her liking as she listens to the TV separately from the TV speaker.

i was wondering since today (Apple Event) that Apple (finally) branding their AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aid (pending patent for FDA and others) with the new iOS 18. Need some insight later how the software update will be game changer or not.
Still can't afford that 1.000$+ hearing aid prescribtion tho sadly.

My parents (Age 93 and 89) tried out this Apple feature with the Apple earbud.
For my Mom, It worked moderately well talking to their doctor during a recent exam. However, it really help my Mom using FaceTime to talk with her grand daughter and great grand daughter who live in Las Vegas.
For my Dad, who is technically legally deaf by the IRS definition for tax filings, this Apple configuration works ok in quiet room settings with minimal background noise since everything gets amplified. For my Dad, regular hearing aid works seem to work better than Apple (after taking it every 3 months back to The VA for cleaning/recalibration).
After all is said and done, my Mom’s hearing aids from Costco and my Dad’s hearing aids from the Veterans Administration are better than Apple earbuds. But the Apple Earbuds seem to be more comfortable and easier to stick in the ear for immediate use than the bulkier over the ear hearing aids.
Your video is great! The setup instructional part really makes it easier to get the Apple products configured.

I’m retired military with moderate (left side) to severe hearing loss (right).
I also have tinnitus episodes which is triggered by loud noises. So whenever an ambulance or fire truck passes nearby…the tinnitus kicks in again and usually lasts all day (which is miserable).
Unfortunately, my VA-provided hearing aids do not protect me from these periodic noise-triggered tinnitus episodes.
So, yesterday I bought the AirPodsPro2…not just for whatever hearing aid help Apple can provide, but also for the Hearing Protection they offer.

Hi, Thanks for the informational video!
Question: Does the Airpod pro 2 require a phone (Iphone) in order to perform its hearing aid functionality?
In other words, after I program and configure the Airpod Pro optimally for hearing aid purpose, can I leave the Iphone at home, and still able to use the Airpod as a hearing aid away from home? Thanks.

I have been using mine for several weeks, they help me quite a bit and I highly recommend them. I have not had issue with battery life as I find there are several times throughout the day I can place them back in case for 10-15 mins and get most of charge back.
What I am still trying to figure out is what I guess is ambient noise settings, I find they seem to flip in and out of sound isolation at times I don’t want them to. Not sure if this would happen with any other hearing device since this is my first.
The key point not mentioned is you do have to bring up to people you are using them as aids and not being rude by not taking your headphones out. So if you are vain about hearing aids this may not be your best option.

Very useful update Dr Cliff and interesting to confirm the relative merits of the APP2's against conventional hearing aids. The other feature I found very useful is that the APP2's when connected to a TV via bluetooth, with the accomodation on, provide an enhanced listening experience over a hearing aid as the drivers are larger and produce a wider soundstage. Used in this manner the person with hearing loss can listen at one volume whilst a partner can listen to the TV at their desired volume. The noise cancellation on the APP2 cancels any interference with the sound from the TV. Brilliant!

Thanks much. I picked up a pair of the Airpod pro 2 to try as beginner hearing aids. I get along pretty well without hearing aids, though at times my wife disagrees. 😃 I was struggling to make sense of the wide open OTC market, and by the time you get to something waterproof enough for sweat producing exercise, hiking in the rain, and bluetooth for streaming, the costs are pretty high. And I had no real idea if I would even notice much of a difference.
I picked up the Airpods on sale for $200. I find they actually help quite a bit, and if the charge gets low they can go back in the case and pick up a decent charge quickly. They do cause comment as people don't understand you are using them as hearing aids. And I don't find them super comfortable after a while, but maybe my ear will break in and get used to them.
They actually help enough I am now wondering about just biting the bullet and getting real hearing aids...

The Mimi Hearing Test software made a real difference, and after entering the results manually and following your AirPods settings tutorial, there is a marked difference. I have mild to moderate hearing loss, sometimes severe on a bad day. All down to varying levels of congestion. I bought the AirPod Pro v1, maybe a couple of years ago, and I heard that they could be used to boost hearing. Gave them a try and found them excellent. I use left one and then right one to maximise battery life as my hearing fluctuates in both ears. I wanted an in the ear hearing aid but have narrow ear canals so these AirPod Pros have been brilliant for me. Completely plumbed in to all my Apple devices. Bought the AirPod Pro 2 and just trying to compare like for like. Only issues I have had with both versions is that the Headphone Accommodations sometimes randomly switch off. Usually, just opening iPhone re-enables it but sometimes toggling it off and then on again fixes it. On rare occasions, I have to run through the setup again. I’m really looking forward to the 18.2 changes that are coming to the hearing functionality.

There is an important point to be kept in mind. With my mild-to-moderate hearing loss, I only use my prescription hearing aids when I go out. They're fine for that. What they're not fine for listening to music or podcasts. For those they're clumsy.
If you watch Steve Jobs original announcement of the first iPhone you see why it was world-changing. For the first time there was a device that was a cell phone, a music player and an Internet browser all in one. That was revolutionary.
The APP2 is a similar transformation. The emphasize has been on it as regular earphone for listening that, to the amazement of many, can also help with hearing. But that doesn't capture all that it is. By doing both well the APP2 becomes more than each separately. The whole is far more than the parts.

The great thing about TH-cam videos is that on the settings wheel just below the video you can slow down speech. I use it for also streaming foreign films or languages I do understand. I also recommend it to my conversational English language learners to practice listening. Its great.

Does anyone know if the amplification reaches higher levels than 85db? I’ve finally set them up and maxed out the amplification and they are life changing now. I’m just concerned the amplification is too much? Or am I over thinking it.

    Do they intelligently amplify?

I still don't understand how you would use these as hearing aids after setting them up. Do you just put them on and switch them on? Am asking for my dad who would benefit from these. He does not always carry his iPhone around, so if he set them up and was away from his iPhone, would he just put them on and switch them on? Can you do that? Apologies don't have AirPods so am unaware of their functionality.

Please enlighten me. I'm an Android user. After setting up the AirPods, how will I use them? I didn't understand. Will they be used like a regular hearing aid, or will they amplify the sounds from the phone? Can they pick up sound from their own microphone? It seems that the live listen feature needs to be enabled, according to my friend's experience.

When its working its not to bad, but more often than not the apple earbuds seem to stop transparency mode when i lock or reboot my phone, I have not been able to understand why this is happening. For my severe ranges it understandably does not work that well. None the less its fine when I do not want to bother with my Oticon's R1, and just want to pop these in, if I could just figure out why it stops acting like a hearing aid from time to time. Do I need my phone on and nearby for this to work? I assumed no since you said a friend can set it up with their iphone.

I just happened to see your video but for whatever reason, after having done an audiogram using the Mimi App and having it connected to my Health App, I go into Headphone. Accommodations, in which Audiogram is checked, then into Custom Audio Setup, continue, my latest Audiogram is checked off, I chose Use Audiogram and it tells me to "connect your headphones to continue", and it never finds my AirPods Pro 2, which I checked and are connected to my iPhone, so I can never proceed. I tried resetting the iPhone and the AirPods Pro 2, but the same message occurs when I get to the "recommended settings", where in can't find my AirPods as it thinks that they are not connected. Sorry for the long winded description, but it's. very frustrating, as I can't complete the process of trying out the AirPods as a hearing aid device. I'm. hoping you can help out, even though your video has been out for a year.

This is all good and well but doesn't really say that much - whether one graph matches another, perceived "ideal" graph, well. The lay watcher does not know how well an actual prescription hearing aid matches the ideal graph, so that information is absent and I guess one can read into those graphs whatever one wants - or at least it is has a lot of room for stretchiness towards whatever opinion somebody favors.
It would be interesting to know how the affected hearing aid user judges the airpod path vs. the prescription solution and or actually see a reference for one of those expensive prescription hearing aids side by side.
It would also be interesting to understand - assuming this is a shortcoming - is it systemic to the hw or is it a software problem that will be overcome soon or at some point in time. Software is first always some kind of tar-paper shed but then over time it may develop into a pyramid or the Empire state building. It's in the nature of software and this is (at best) release 1.0 - maybe only 0.9 as it will only be released tomorrow I believe?
