Janet 'Miss You Much' should be the number #1 of 89 , Phill collins spent 2 weeks in 89 and last 2 in 1990 and was on the charts for 18 , Janet 20 total.
I remember all 200 of these songs! After a three year break, I got back into charts in fall of 1988, and followed them heavily until January 1993. I just watched the 1988 video and was shocked at how many songs I did NOT know, by artists I was very familiar with!

I hope that you eventually make videos like this for all 15 years of what I refer to as "The '80s Era"(Theatrical release of Star Wars in late-May '77 through to Freddie Mercury's death in late-November '91)!
This would match up with Nirvana hitting it big and Guns n Roses with what I consider the last Great Classic Rock Stappe November Rain. I would like to suggest 2 sub eras, 77-Jan of 80 (Disco) and -May of 82 (up to just before Joan Jetts I love Rock n Roll hit the charts as Diaco Hangover when Yacht Rock Ruled.
1989 is a fascinating year in pop music. Was a great year for Adult Contemporary, Hair Metsl, Legacy Artists, Bubbbkegum Pop, Urban Contemporary, and some styles and artists were fading out. 1989 maybe the last year of so many tunes that never left the airwaves. Tube into any station with a name of The Breeze, Lite, or thr Jewel and many of these are staples 32 years later.
Actually, the peak position of the original version of Real Life's " Send Me An Angel peaked at no. 29 in 1983. And the original version of Sweet Sensation's "Hooked On You" peaked at number 64 in 1986.
Power ballads, R & B, some glam, the very first grunge songs and very few "feel-good" catchy pop tunes. No doubt it was the ending of the upbeat 80's and the beginning of the depressing, melancholic 90's.
I like to call it a move away from cheesy 80s pop and glam to a variety of beautiful masterpieces, but theres so much variety in the 90s charts its hard to label everything the same.
Thanks a lot for the video! I love '89 in music. There are countless incrdible songs in this video. I would like to know what criterion you use to break the ties for songs with the same peak position. Sometimes it is the total number of weeks that a song stayed on The Hot 100 and some others it is the number of weeks that a song stayed at its peak position. There isn't a one-off criterion.
I recognized a lot of these from the year I was 11 years old. I didn't appreciate many of them until over 20 years later. I didn't like 1989 as a child. 1990 was a bit better in my opinion.
Sharon Bryant's Let Go? One 2 Many Downtown? A crime to not have them listed if we're talking a song that peaked in the Top 40 (October 14th & May 20th, respectively).
@@carolaynstewartraitt9954 To each her own. It's a guilty pleasure, but the songs were good. "Blame It on the Rain" was written by Diane Warren, a huge songwriter in the late 80s and most of the 90s.
Some fond memories but then again some annoying ones. I remember trying to study or was feeling blue and I’d turn on the radio and hear some good, dance music... THEN they would play Phil “The Killjoy” Collins and I would like get so sad and depressed. His music really affected me and not in a good way.
The term should be ',Rob & Fab' didn't deserve credit' for those hits. Don't blame M. V. Or radio entirely for playing them, we record buyers got 'n to the top. Eddie Murphy? Yes but the song barely squeaked into the top 30. "Put Your Mouth On Me" was his only other hit. If you don't recognize some of the first 100 or just a bit more, it's because most of them weren't even Top 10 hits. They all made yop 40, top 30 or top 20 but, yep, only when you get really high on the list, do you get Top 19s and #1 hits. 1989 (just like 1988) had 35 songs go to #1 EACH! 70 #1 hits in a 2 year period. I followed the top 40 from 1984 to late 1994, so that's how I know. ☺️
Walter Campisano Plus, another reason why people may not remember these songs as much is the turnover rate was very fast. Even most #1s spent only 20 weeks on the Hot 100, and there was only one 4 week #1 song, Another Day in Paradise. Blame radio and studios, as soon as a song peaked, radio stopped playing them and was given the next single to play.

Walk Like an Egyptian peaked in Dec 1986. 2. Many of the pure Pop songs don't hold up. Songs from genres like R&B and Rock hold up better. Makes sense, the latter had to be decent to crossover. 3. However, it peaked at #5, I think.
