"Nobody ever had an existential crisis while stalking deer", How true that is. This video is full of eloquent people, but all inevitably struggle to express the unique and ineffable completeness of being experienced by hunters. I suspect it is actually beyond words, and always has been. The words enable hunters to recognise the experience they share, but without that experience those words can only be partially understood, and those who are repelled by hunting will unthinkingly or wilfully misunderstand and deride them.
Their refusal to empathise aside, we understandably struggle to find the language to convey the spririt within what we do to those who don't hunt, and to those who oppose hunting, wrapping it up in the worthy, tangible externalities of healthy food, wildlife conservation and management, social bonds and general mental and physical wellbeing. All have more value than those who hate hunting in its many forms can bring themselves to recognise, but all come about only because of of the act of self-realisation that lies at the heart of the hunter's experience.
This is why the most unspoiled and diverse natural environments I have ever experienced have all been encountered within hunting preserves, and why land not conserved for hunting is so much more readily lost to development undertaken for commercial or political gain. Hunting provides many livings, but makes no millionaires; while the low-density human populations inherent to land conserved for hunting are at a fundamental disadvantage in the face of the urban and suburban masses, whenever votes are harvested or clicks tallied. In evoking the democratic principle as justification for eradicating hunting, that is, to eradicate a minority culture with deeply-held beliefs and traditions and a generations-old connection to the land, those who persecute hunting betray this very principle.
All this notwithstanding, the repulsion experienced by opponents of hunting is their right, and evidently something they cherish. Consequently, it would be as wrong to deprive them of their bitterness as it is for them to seek to deprive us of our joy. All I would ask is that they respect our joy, and savour their bile, in peace.

Well done Johnny and Co very well put together. It’s such a shame we can’t get a film like this one put out on one of the national tv channels.

Fantastic film. Just a thought for future films, do you think it might be worth looking at the people who spend hundreds of hours training dogs to assist with the hunting and retrieving of game.
I’m a keen shooter but a keener dog handler and nothing brings me more pleasure than successfully shooting a bird and having my dog retrieve it quickly and efficiently to hand.
I feel if the general public could see the passion that goes into a good dog it could act as a stepping stone to understand the passion that goes into shooting.
    Just a thought.
Thank you again and keep up the good work.

Hunting to me, for westerners, is as much an aboriginal right as any other culture in the world. Some call us backward and cruel. They are usually people who never experienced it. I have learned, over many years, to ignore "antis". Their views are not mine, they have ownership of theirs, me mine. We hunt to eat mainly, but the process is also beneficial to mental well being. Excellent video.

What a fantastic film, well done TGS, I myself fish, shoot game and pigeons and stalk deer, the only pleasure I take in the act of killing is a job well done, cleanly and humanely killed, I am far from religious but creeping quietly through the woods in the half light or sitting beside a lake at first light watching the world and wildlife wake up is something special that so many people never experience and that is such a shame, I couldn't imagine not having all that in my life, I have done these things for 50 years and long may they continue

Absolutely fantastic film - well done. It rang so very true with my own experiences and reasons for hunting. Thank you.
One thing that was touched on, but perhaps need emphasizing more is (driven shoots aside), what would happen if we did not hunt and manage the populations of deer/pigeons/other pests/invasive species. While not a prime reason many of us hunt, it is an increasingly important consideration especially as humans encroach more on natural environments.

Great short film. I too have an outsized prey drive and I find that only hunting humans for sport can sate it. I understand that other people think it's wrong to hunt, but I just ask that they don't try to stop me from pursuing my passion because they disagree with it personally. The focus, clarity, and euphoria of hunting my prey is hard to put into words. I'm no longer just passing through the city but really participating in it. And ultimately, my harvesting strengthens the human herd and lessens the burden we place on our environments. Thanks to TGS for this beautiful and reasoned defense of my favorite pastime.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. I would love this to be shown in British schools. I live in Finland and thank god we do not have the same detachment of what meat is. 5.5 million people and 300,000 registered hunters means that our kids grow up connected to the land. Yes, we buy meat from the store, but I don't think there is a family I know that doesn't also handle locally hunted meat and share the back story. The animal's life and the hunter's journey that brings it to the table is something that our children understand. Thank you TGS.

Growing up in a rural area, by far the biggest reason, was that less financially fortunate families could split a box of 30-06 and afford to put good healthy food on the table. It truly is about survival. The image of the wealthy man shooting for sport has ruined the image of shooting for a lot of people.

Jonny, I'm not a hunter of live animals myself, but I don't object to those who do hunt. In your video 'Why We Hunt' - I think you might just be missing a very important point here to show the general public what hunting is really all about and why it is not in fact as cruel as many people may first think
I think there is a very informative video to be made and broadcast here at some point, where their meat actually comes from that so many people casually take for granted and purchase on a daily basis from the local supermarket. How the mass slaughter house killing of animals differs very much from the single hunting and killing of an animal whilst in its natural habitat and actually how much more humane to the animal hunting is compared to mass slaughter house breeding and killing
Obviously there are people who strongly object to both forms of meat production, their thoughts and feelings should be respected and should be discussed by education rather than confrontation, in my opinion
I'm defiantly no expert in this field, but I'm sure there is an educational video to be made explaining the difference between a hunted and killed animal or bird in its natural habitat vs a bread to be mass slaughtered animal in a 'factory' bread environment. Maybe then the general public might understand a little more how hunting is not quite as cruel and unacceptable as it might first appear?
Just my random thoughts Jonny - have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year
    Cheers
    Dale

I have wanted to make that film for a while. The problem is that one could not make
It without throwing farmers under a bus. The other issue is that Farming in the country is so damn good that it’s would be hard to say anything they do is what I would consider bad for the animal (with the exception of some styles of chicken farming).
Like a lot of the films I would like to make, and a lot of the things I would like to say and do - I cannot out of respect for my friends

    • @dale_ch
      @dale_ch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@tgsoutdoors Hi Jonny, I understand your dilemma here, in the best interest of the hunting community this production would be hugely beneficial, I'm sure of that. So, maybe there's room for a debate in the room, presented by you, for significant representatives of both hunting and animal farming communities - to have a sensible filmed debate together with each other? - that would be an epic debate, something few to date will ever have seen / experienced? I once read an article (sorry I've looked but can't find the specific article) where members of the public were asked where the meat that they regularly eat actually originates - and a large majority answered 'from the supermarket - not even the local butchers shop was mentioned' ! - so many folk are totally detached from the original source of the meat they eat, but then are often very objectional to the hunting community. Enough said?

To stalk and bring down a deer is a test of skill and ability. Sitting in a hide up a tree waiting for something to cross your path is not so much of a test. I would say that nature can be manipulated the whole of the UK is an example of how we have manipulated the countryside; hence the deer population issues in the Highlands

Though I understand why it might even be appropriate or necessary to stoop to this level (dramatic music, slow motion camera shots, general attempts to get emotional responses) as it's kind of an overall cultural standard.
Imo, there's a few core points that can land with people:
    - If you eat meat at all (as most of us do), you shouldn't have an issue with responsible hunting. The modern disconnect from the meat on our plates and the death of that animal is a more pressing issue of personal morality and character. If you think hunting is just bad and needs to stop, you need to be a vegetarian to be consistent
    - We are not outside of nature. We're a natural anomaly, but we're still part of nature. Humanity has been influencing the balance of nature like every other predator since we've existed. The difference is that we can, and have been much more destructive than most other species when we do not think about what we're doing. So we have to think about what we're doing. If we use our abnormal intellect irresponsibly and over hunt, we unbalance our environments. If we just stop hunting, we unbalance our environments.
    - We've inherited human managed ecosystems. In places like the UK, humans have to control populations of animals like deer because we've killed off any other predator that can manage that. We cannot stand outside of the ecosystem. We're a core component of many ecosystems. To deal with the irresponsible hunting of past generations, we need to hunt responsibly in the modern day. Though I should add that it's quite understandable why those generations over hunted (concerns over livelihoods, primarily). Also, do most modern people really want wolves to be a common sight around their homes so that they can regulate certain prey animals? That's perhaps an uncomfortable and specific question (to certain prey animals), but I think it's a thought provoking one
Also, for what it's worth; I think that the "traditional clothing" many of you are working with is causing you problems. I'm not going to delve into why exactly, but imo, this guy 2:49 gives you a better image than a bunch of upper class folks surrounded by dogs and dressed like this 13:36 I'm not saying it's right or wrong - it's just the environment that exists. There's definitely a class component to this that needs to be noted. If you bring out the common man as your standard bearer, you're going to get a much better response than if you roll out someone who sounds like their dad's a Lord. The lower classes have been especially disconnected from hunting over the course of the past hundred years or so

At 13:36 I see 2 people in a shirt and tie below an outdoor coat, unless you zoom in to see labels or something, from that distance they could be coats from primark or matalan. If you tried you could look identical to that for around £100. Even if they are expensive, its no different to someone at a gym wearing top sports brands beside someone in cheap running kit. Why would you begrudge someone the ability to buy and wear the clothes they want to

@@robertstewart1464 I'm not really expressing my own feelings here; I felt like I already alluded to that. I'm trying to articulate my sense of what the overall environment is. This style of dress is like a uniform of a subculture that most people do not identify with, or even want to be associated with. I'm saying that if you're trying to change public opinion, give people something relatable.

Nonsense, No one is going to let a stranger wonder around their property with a gun, you have to work at it, the easiest way is if you live in the community, if you went to school with farmers sons or your kids went to school with a gamekeepers kids, go to farmers markets and talk to them get yourself known to be honest and helpful.

Observing - hunting a weird sick difference. Cognitive dissonance and talking codswallop does not justify you - any of you ! If you appreciated nature you wouldn’t kill it. It’s not far more complicated, you’ve just got yourselves a nasty hobby. Could you control this ‘over population in a more humane way’ yes you could but you enjoy hunting so you don’t try and think around it.

I have listened to some absolute rubbish spoken to try and justify killing. But this tops the lot, hunting is on it's final death throws. And guess what YOU have done it to yourselves. Personally I would have more respect and understanding of individuals if they just admit they just enjoy killing. + of course gamekeepers are trying to hold on to their demising job vacancies.

Politically Paul , you could not be more wrong. For decades the left has infiltrated our institutions, chipping away at our rights of choice and free speech and cancelling its opponents. The most recent manifestation of this is the cult of "woke" which is now being ever more robustly rejected as an outbreak of common sense reverberates through the corridors of power. Your outdated class warrior rantings are recognised for what they are really about, your hatred of people more successful in life than you. Hunting us increasingly recognised as a vital tool in wildlife management and is on the verge of a renaissance. More people " hunt" in the UK than ever before and it is your side that is losing political traction.
