I've been a rifle man for years and only decided to get into shotguns a couple of months ago. I took your advice and bought a Hatsan Escort (section one for PSG) love it to bits, it just works. I then followed your advice again and bough a Lanber for clays. I got a minter for 200 quid and it shoots great. Keep up the good work.

Escort was the second shotgun I've owned after a mossberg 500 tactical and other than the fact that it's Turkish and doesn't have too many after market parts I enjoy my escort far more and just feels so much more sturdy and less recoil

Great video by the main man himself.
Second-hand is always the way to go. You can then pretend to people that you bought the gun new. How well a gun shoots is only half a factor when making the purchase. It is equally important that you will be able to brag about said gun to your friends.
Would like to see a review of Huglu shotguns, (sold in USA as CZ).
also Khan arms, USA branded as Tristar.
The cz uses huglu barrels, the rest of the gun is made in the USA

Absolutely love this content. Single barrel, break action guns are really cheap. Good for teaching or learning! You should do a video about that.
I'd note a couple of differences on this side of the pond...
Our used gun bargains tend to be Mossberg 500's or 870 Expresses, basically because they are available new for $300-400. And on the O/U side, a forty year old Japanese O/U in shootable condition will typically fetch a couple hundred more than Academy will sell a Yildiz for.
Regarding pumps/autos, shooting driven birds isn't much of a thing over here. When flushing birds, the third shot is of more potential value than a rapid reload.
Interesting observations... Have over one million down range with my Browning Diana Superposed skeet & skeet. Decided to try some trap. Started out with a Browning BT99, which was nice. BUT, was offered a Browning BSS 20ga, chocked modified on the right and full choke on the left barrel. What a sweetheart! Ran 24 out of 25 from the 21 yard line first time. Side by sides can be great target guns.. IF... you take to them quickly. I really enjoy visiting TGS from time to time. Keeps me smiling and up to date on the shooting sports in GB. You bring forth interesting, insightful shooting stories. CHeers!
I have an old Yildiz probably 10 years or older. And I broke an ejector and they sent me brand new ones at no cost😊
I’m an American gun owner and know you buy what you can afford. I agree with the last point of a simi auto shotgun and own 2 budget simi autos but my first purchase was a reliable pump shotgun and has worked ever time I’ve brought it out. Just a mention of the pump brand is a Mossberg made Maverick 88, yes a little loose but very reliable. Great video man
I enjoyed that frank and concise review. Being only a novice to clays my ATA serves its purpose well, but having now seen the impressive Yildiz catalog, it would be interesting to hear a comparative review given that they occupy the same 'budget' category.

Any chance of a cheap to charming or back from the brink where you go completely over the top? I’d love to see you take something like a Yeoman or No 4 and rechequer, oil finish, re-blue barrels, colour case harden action and furniture etc.
Nice that you mention the Winchester. Just bought a Grand European 1/4 and 1/2 choke 28" barrels. A very nice gun, well balanced, beautiful wood and last but not least, it fits really nice.
Picked up a Yildiz Legacy HPS in 12. Liked it so much I got it's 20 gauge little brother. As for semi autos, love my Mossberg 940 jm pro.

Serendipitous moment only a week ago, Berreta s687 20 bore, been a sleeper for at least 6 years, nice wood, case with original oil, and paperwork, but most important of all I love it to bits and it cost me a lot less than a grand, I’m one very lucky person 👍🏻. Great video please keep them coming
My first gun was a Beretta s687 12 bore. £650 off my brothers mate. Barely a mark on it. Multichoke 30'' with original cardboard box and manual no less.
Budget is a relative term. I think my recent purchase of a Beretta 694 was a bargain!

I've noticed a handful of new and really affordable side by sides hit the market lately. Like the CZ Bobwhite. As someone who's side by side curios, whats your thoughts?
I've been looking thru reviews and the Bobwhite G2 seems to be a really nice SxS. I want one too.

I got myself a BC Miroku 350 for £250 a few years back, and have never had a single problem with it. Given a clean up and proper oil finish it looks better than most new guns under £2,000.
Also picked up an 1880s Cogswell and Harrison best quality boxlock for £600, perfectly balanced on the hinge pin, one of the best guns I've ever handled. It was serviced and rebarrelled at Westley Richards some time in the 1980s by the previous owner, back when people still cared about quality handmade boxlocks.
They're not too clever when it comes to high pressure steel shot, though, the Turkish guns and pogo sticks definitely have them beat there.

I would be interested to see what your thoughts are on the CZ Bobwhite G2 series of SxS. I've read several articles about how much people here in the states like them, but I haven't seen anyone on TH-cam do a proper field review . I figured since you guys have handled every quality level of SxS, it would be interesting to see how they compare and perform for their given price point.

I have an old Nikko SV712 that I bought 40 years ago, and it was probably at least 10 years old then. It’s a good gun. In many ways I think I like it more than my more modern Fausti that I bought for multi-chokes and using steel. I once had an Ithaca/SKB 100 that I sold, like the foolish young guy I once was. I’d probably pickup a Charles Daly (Miroku) 500 in a heartbeat if I see one come up, though given California’s lead shot bans I’d be pretty restricted as to where I could use it - perhaps on trips out of state.

Bought a Hatsan Escort 1st gen when they were first out, had my fair share of jams but once I found the ammo it liked I couldn't help but smile when I beat the people that mocked me with my "cheap" gun! I believe the newer ones are less fussy with ammo!?

Best money a man can spend is on an older japanese gun!! I've never felt undergunned shooting my miroku 3800/700 and winchester 6500, built to a standard only matched today when spending £2000 plus and then some, everytime i look at a new mirook i come away feeling i have better guns at home
@Richard S yes the quality gap in finishing to todays stuff is easily seen, and you can find them for less than a new turkish ata , easy choice

Last week i traded in my old fixed chokes Miroku mk70 and got a Yildiz SPZ.
Only real reason was to be able to fire steel through it.
Not the gun of my dreams but an upgrade that'll serve me well for the forseeable future.
+on the SPZ is adjustable stock
- could possibly be that it doesn't come with an ejector, just extractor for the cartridges. Less to pick up though..
I love my Armsan A612, got it for £200.

Think i would still advise a first time shooter to make his first gun an Over & Under or Side by Side. Other than that, just another great video.

I think you should rethink why (mostly english) sporstmanship means only over-unders and side-by-sides. Semi autos are not a "barbarian's" weapon of choice.
Which British maker makes the equivalent of the Beretta Silver Pigeon or the EELL?
Just bought an immaculate Parker Hale O/U 36 years old.
As a Turkish shooter, I would recommend Akdaş and Akus guns as well. I dont know what name they have in UK. Akdaş is named Dickinson in USA. They are really good and solid
I own a number of hunting shotguns. Some are budget guns and I truly enjoy them. The best thing about taking to the field with a budget gun is I'm less concerned about field damage to them. I do like the Italian guns like Beretta or Benelli, but I picked up a Turkish gun in 28 bore that shoots great.

Can you do a similar on 20 bore looking for something for my partner she just getting into the game is youse a 410 and like to bring her up in power try my 12 bore but saying it’s a bit much for her thanks
My shooting buddy and I were perusing the pawn shops one weekend and he died a kreighoff model 32, since he has 3 Remington 3200 we know the guns well. Looks like it had MAYBE 10 boxes through it. He talked Them down to $2200

I paid about 330 pound for a 1937-1939 16 ga webley & scott side by side. Was super happy at first...but a few days later i relized the rib was loose in the middle. The gunsmith in the store i bought it from glued it with epoxy.
Repairs would cost more than the shotgun itself 😭
Looking for a decent 28 gauge over/under. A well used 101 diamond grade was at $1900.a bit over priced I think!

picked up a hatsan extrema... didn't need it but it came up on gunstar in my area.. 5 mins away, for 80 quid. 🤣🤣 its brand new (200 shells)...it ejects my 26g HVs ok....
I'm looking for side plated over and under shotgun with English stock. my budget is 700$-1300$. please, can you give me advice where can I find them?
Also semi autos often have lower recoil so they can be better for people with some medical issues

You asked the cultural difference between the UK and the US when it comes to "budget shotguns" here in the US that would typically mean something like a Mossberg 500 or Maverick 88 pump shotgun retailing under $300 (USD) with not a single O/U in sight.
870 express can be thrown in there also, AGREED NO O/U IN SIGHT.
There are currently 24 over/under for sale on gun broker for less than $500

So Jonny, how long do you think that a pretty 3 shot semi auto of a certain look and spec will be acceptable on a game shoot bearing in mind that in truth, they actually take longer to reload than any side be side or over and under when empty ?
It has been observed that while you can get a third shot of quicker with a semiauto, with a double you’ll get four off faster.

One word when it comes to my favourite budget gun Lanber better then a new turkish gun and you’ll never here a bad thing said about them
Save up for another month or two and get a Browning 325 - awesome gun - or a Beretta 680. Also awesome. Both have soaked up the price drop and will hold every penny of their value, whereas new Turkish guns will lose 50% value, at least, if you trade them in.
Since economy is part of the equation, in this price bracket.
My first shotgun, years ago, was a Hatsan Escort. Many people love them, which is fair enough. Mine popped a rubber o ring, in its first outing to the clay ground, which induced me to trade it in and take the hit, replacing it with a used Beretta 391 Urika. That was bloody marvellous!
One of the few guns I regret selling.

There is a brand that sells here in the US that is under the name tristar and they are a Turkish over under and sell for right at 400 dollars us and are great budget guns and people love them... they seem like they may be a American branding of the one at the beginning.. not the Ata but the other one
In snooping around some forums, I saw probably four manufacturers associated with Tristar; none of them were Yildiz. The Yildiz SPZ follows the basic Rizzini pattern (underneath locking bolt like a Browning, but hinged on trunnions to reduce receiver depth); that being the most common design used by Turkish makers, many brands resemble it.
The Lazer etched engraving receiver and barrel setup looks identical to the one in the video...supposedly the tristar is built to resemble a browning or Beretta can't remember which

You have to think about the conditions in which the gun will be used. A double in a goose pit can present loading problems. You don't want your semi-auto ejecting shells in someone else's ear.
Do you want your treasured example of the gunmaker's art wet with swamp water? A whole day in the upland game field with a 9 lb. double can be a lot less fun than with a light 20 ga. Best solution to all these "problems" is to have a LOT of different guns. I'm told that there exists a perfect gun for every application. Finding it is a quest worth the effort. I'm sure Jonny will disagree with that.

Hello there, im going to buy my first gun in a few weeks, im swedish and waiting for my licence. Do not have the biggest budget and looking to buy a turkish gun, looked at an EGE arms over and under for 5999kr, its like £600 i think. Anyone knows if its a decent brand? Not alot of turkish brands close to where I live, so have to drive a few hours get a yildiz or something like that.

A friend and I each have an ATA SP with an adjustable comb, I got mine second hand in mint condition for about £500, friend's new was maybe just shy of £700. Both recommend them.
I've been offered a beretta 682 for £650, I've shot it and strip cleaned it all the joints are tight but there's signs of age wearing, 5 chokes. Is this a bargain?

Bought a miroku o/u for £70, just needed some cleaning and a new buttplate. Here in Sweden miroku is cheap guns.

My clay ground requires the bolt to be locked back on semi autos unless you're in the box, that's it.

I'm going to both agree and disagree with points in the video.
Agree: Japanese-made guns present very high quality options for the used buyer. If you are newer to guns, buy from a reputable gun shop.
Disagree: Semi autos ARE a good option for beginners. Mainly because gas operated semis greatly reduced recoil and make shooting more enjoyable for the beginner. Recoil IS an issue for beginners, if we want them to stay in the sport, it needs to be addressed.
Semi autos are NOT less safe. Total myth. There's nothing more or less safe about any modern gun type, the rules are the rules.
I'd argue a semi is far less safe as there is always the chance a new shooter misscounts how many shots they fired and the obvious one that the gun can't be broken open when carried, to people new to these guns those mixed together can be a very unsafe situation
Firearm safety rule #1. Treat every gun as a loaded gun. Doesn't matter if it holds 1 round or 30.
Autos can be locked bolt open and that is as safe as a broken double.
@@JHruby unfortunately its not yourself you need to worry about, people new to those guns can make them unsafe pretty quickly, hence why some claygrounds won't allow them, a double gun is easy, a semi does pose a new shooter more challenges
