(Wasn't a stand up comedian) wasn't used to being a solo act, used to relying on another person, had done random sports stuff and radio crap. He's explaining how he get more vocal on his nightly show, because he didn't know what else to F'n do at the time as he was in a spot he wasn't really prepared for.
He's admitting he wasn't prepared and its how he ended up there, while Berts trying to blow him he corrects him and explains how it wasn't some kind of righteous act but rather panicked action. He got a job he didn't really know how to do. I think its a bit of humility to see him admit that, this is a LOT LOT more interesting than his talk show which all are almost the same cut/paste after Conan and Craig left.
