Susan Malone thank you! I was a Freshman when we did this, and at that same time I was OBSESSED with Rent. I was in Ensamble, and even that was great. Garfield High School really is great.
I bet most knew what it was about since Rent was really popular, and parents were probably in their early twenties in the 90s, but yeah I guess some parents didn't know 😨😳
Garfield high school. I am a student at this school... I would argue it has one of the best acting programs in King County, along with Mercer Island High School, and Kamikak High.
It was SO refreshing to see a high school perform this as it was meant to be performed, without sanitizing it and dumbing it down. Kudos for that. Well done.
I just love this Collins. That deep voice! I go back now and then to watch this again because of him. Santa Fe is my favorite number in Rent and he is just soooo good here
Why do productions always pick the Seasons of Love soloist solely based on who can scream out that top note? Pick the most dynamic vocalist and worry about that note later or do something different.
I'm so suprised this is performed in highschool. Not in a bad way, it's a great play, it's just that I've never seen a school allow content such as this. I call it progressive. Kudos. It's amazing to me how this play is 20 something years old and it still speaks on so many levels. I think it could really speak to someone dealing with any kind of life threatening illness, some kind of hardship. There's just a wide range. AMAZED to see Contact. I've seen a few highschool productions on here that nixed it.
Great job on this guys - for a high school production - it was awesome. I've seen Rent 5 times, and am seeing again next week . Kudos for keeping it original, and not censoring it.
Garfield theatre kids: You really were phenomenal. I was bummed that I didn't even hear about the production until closing night, else I would have gone probably every night! I've been a RENThead since before y'all were even born, and I was just in awe of how passionate your performances were. So happy that this was posted!
I give them all major props for tackling this amazing musical - Rent is not the easiest to pull off. Anyone who is down on these kids need to remember that in another 8-10 years it could be a totally different story. I'm a professional singer and things I could never do at 16 weren't so tough at 26. I think the main issue is the sound balance - the instruments many times overpower the vocals and the space echoes quite a bit. I would cranked up some of the vocal mics because not only would it help the balance, but having more volume can give you confidence when you're younger :)
You are absolutely right which is why I'm ignoring their stiffness and deer in the headlights look. Gotta admit I enjoyed the kids performance, so innocent and passionate.
Nahren Neno Rent pretty much just 1 set and they bring in things and remove them ween the scene over unlike other musicals where the have to keep changing sets
The best acting pulls off experience. They've never paid rent. Let alone been at that point of anxiety you're behind on rent, worried about ending up on the street with no solutions and no money. They don't have that pain in their voice. This a high school production. For that, it's amazing!
I do this for a living. Direct and choreograph with young people. This is great. Really appreciate the creative casting involving the increased ensemble size. Just like a high school should. So creatively directed and performed. Also vocally everyone sounded great. I saw Jesse Martin as Collins in June '96 and it was so emotional when he sang "I Will Cover You." This Collins while vocally still growing was so riveting. Perfect! Y'all betta work! Yaasss!
Mimi is a difficult character for a highschooler to play, very complex. Not many people let alone teenagers could relate to a drug addict, stripper with AIDs. Potentially too young to fully get the character, she did a really good job though
From the way she moves in her body and how she doesn't seem comfortable or to know her body every well. And her fake moan was a rock howl lol. And that it's highschool kids. She's likely a virgin, which would make it difficult to fully portray a street worker lol
After having been a RentHead since forever, and a retired teacher, I’ll grade the company... Ensemble: A Mark: D- He looked like he was just going through the motions. Roger: B- Mimi: C- Put more emotion into your performance Mark’s Mom: A JoAnne: B+ Maureen: C Collins A+ Benny: B- Angel: D Orchestra: A+ Director: A+
Lmao this comment is so awesome, I think I agree with you for most of it. Except Joanne's grade, I would have given her a slightly lower grade but oh well.
I agree with most of the grades I’d rate roger higher because he could play the guitar vs having to have a double. I also think orchestra and director were on point. Joanne’s score would be lower and I’d give angel a C+
Catdog550 Aladdin is still so much better than Snow White. Our production was a crappy 30 minute show with no songs and was written by the teacher, and that's one of the better shows we've done...
Lara Mullings I wish my school could do plays . We don't get to have them. But if we did I know my shock would never allow it sadly! It's such a great musical
As a huge Rent fan who grew up with the Broadway show and movie and has dreamed of being in this show since I was a little girl, this performance was absolutely amazing. I am so impressed. Wow.
This was a damn good performance. For a high school to do ALL the original script and performances is damn impressive. The set design worked well with the blocking. While these kids are definitely green and have a lot of life experience to live, their performances were awesome for how young they are. Definite stand outs were Joanne, Roger and Collins! Overall a very well put together production! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
It's probably nerves. I feel like it was really good for what it was, with a lot of room for improvement. This is such an ambitious project. I give them a lot of credit.
The kids who played Tom, Mark, Roger and Mimi were amazing and has the perfect voice for their roles. It's funny how Angel can't move properly - this one was miscast. Today For You, Tomorrow For Me supposedly a fun and energetic performance. PS: I want Tom Collins to cover me and be my mote. I love him so much haha
Lucky you guys. School in Texas, we got in trouble for doing Once Upon a Mattress. Couple has premarital sex. Can't portray anything that the kids don't already know. Can't portray homosexuality even though 11% of the school is queer. Can't portray premarital sex even though I had a parent or soon to be one in each class due to a lack of sexual education and access to condoms/birth control. Guess we'll ignore the AIDS crisis just like Reagan did. Great show, guys. Jealous I wasn't able to get this when I was in high school.
i thought that Mark was okay but compared to some of the stronger performances like Collins and Roger, he didn't stand out quite as much. plus i though his stare looked a bit dead most of the show
Stephen Rees The guy who played mark was bland imo. He lacks energy, emotion and volume. All the things that other guys who played Mark in other productions have.
There are a lot of comments about could have been a little bit more anger in that one part. Mimi isn't quite gritty enough.. These are children with almost no life experience. And this is one of the hardest most gut retching human stories that barely any of us will experience. Homeless Drug addiction Prostitution to feed the addiction Aids. These kids did fkin amazing!!!! They hit all the notes! And they played off each other perfectly which is what ensemble cast of RENT is all about! I hope some of them go on to do big things!!
Good Job. I liked it especially because when most High Schools do it they edit it to fit what high schools normally do, which kills Rent. Not the case with this production.
I’m not against making the musical easier to do so KIDS can do a better job on it. Plus, they are amateurs. In other words, they are not getting paid to do this.
Also I go to a Christian school and our drama department is pretty good - my Drama teacher is OBSESSED with RENT, she’s seen it like 7 times live and we all want to do RENT so badly. Like if there was a way for us to talk the school into letting us do it, we would. But we’re a Christian school, so it’s totally out of the question 😂😂
Writing this at time 1:35:15 first off, Collins hella cute. second, i think he had the best chemistry with Angel but could work on not being so stiff. Once I realized Mimi was making it her own more than most productions, I gave her kudos. Mark....7.5/10. Maureen, no. Angel, that was some hard work. Best I've seen so far in a HS production. Oh yeah, I like Joanne even though she didn't so "We're ok" with the right context
Just one criticism, and it's common in a lot of high school level musicals. The music drowns out the singing in some parts and is just too loud in others.
Okay........ G.H.S! The show was awesome!! So many people will voice their opinion on the way they think YOUR show should've gone! That's fine because we are all entitled to their opinion. Was it perfect?? No. But, neither is the touring productions!! You guys did a fantastic job your show!!! Please be proud of yourselves and don't listen to negative people!! Celebrate the fact that your school put on a great show...
Helen Petersen true, they are expecting professional broadway singers or something. Anyway I don't understand the need to insult and bring others down instead of giving constructive criticism.
i feel like everyone had the means to be an amazing singer in this but just weren’t given the right notes to show that off except for maybe the actor playing rodger but that set is amazing for a high school production
Props to the kids and the school for doing RENT. My issue is that 1) I can’t hear the vocals. 2) Much like Rent LIVE, it seems like they are phoning (pun intended) in the notes. Still, it looks like a good production.
Kudos to this high school for allowing this to be performed.
It took us a LOT of begging/asking/protesting. I gotta say.
I have to admit, I was shocked to watch it and realize you guys got to do it .... without any editing... kudos... a great job kids!
Susan Malone thank you! I was a Freshman when we did this, and at that same time I was OBSESSED with Rent. I was in Ensamble, and even that was great. Garfield High School really is great.
Why not? Also am I late?
@@kerwwyngonzales9547 Rent has alot of subject matter most schools won't allow (a stripper, Aids and gay/trans characters)
I wonder how many parents came to see the show without knowing what it was about 0_0
I bet most knew what it was about since Rent was really popular, and parents were probably in their early twenties in the 90s, but yeah I guess some parents didn't know 😨😳
THIS PRODUCTION DID EVERYTHING! From every curse word to actually mooning people! What High School is this!?
Garfield High School in Seattle
Google their jazz band, too, and be amazed.
a good one
Garfield high school. I am a student at this school... I would argue it has one of the best acting programs in King County, along with Mercer Island High School, and Kamikak High.
MY SCHOOLS ISNT EVEN LETTING US DO THIS!!!!
I fell in love with the Collins' voice
He's the star of this show. ❤
It was SO refreshing to see a high school perform this as it was meant to be performed, without sanitizing it and dumbing it down. Kudos for that. Well done.
I just love this Collins. That deep voice! I go back now and then to watch this again because of him. Santa Fe is my favorite number in Rent and he is just soooo good here
zipzapkpop What you Own is my fav
Who is he.
The girl who played Joanne was amazing!! Xo
They were all def spot on, but I loved Collins the most!!!
Roger and Mimi absolutely nailed that ending, so emotional and so powerful. Well done!
Why do productions always pick the Seasons of Love soloist solely based on who can scream out that top note? Pick the most dynamic vocalist and worry about that note later or do something different.

AMAZED to see Contact. I've seen a few highschool productions on here that nixed it.
The guy playing Mark just wasn't Mark. He didn't understand the character very well at all. The kid who played Roger on the other hand?? He nailed it.
Glad to say my boyfriends played the hell out of the drums during this production
THE COLLINS WOULD MAKE A GREAT JD
Emerald Greene I THOUGHT THAT
Emerald Greene I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING 😭
Omg
the best one was collins, he was on the ball at all times.
He's soooooooooooo cute
The people who play Mark, roger, Collins, and Mimi are really great
wtf why cant my high school have a theater program like this!!
i loved the guys playing Rodger. and Collins.
I give them all major props for tackling this amazing musical - Rent is not the easiest to pull off. Anyone who is down on these kids need to remember that in another 8-10 years it could be a totally different story. I'm a professional singer and things I could never do at 16 weren't so tough at 26. Mark Cohen is literally my Dream role I want to do this show at my high school
The people who played Mimi, Joanne, and Collins have amazing futures ahead with those type of performances
This production is great, all of the cast is fantastic. But I was pleasantly surprised by Collins in this one in particular.
The set is amazing!
Mark could've emoted a little bit more but MiMi, Rodger, and Collins were SO GOOD
Maureen was a little pitchy
Roger was awesome!!
They all could use some work with singing and acting lol, this show was not at all good haha
The Collins sang in his throat the entire show, this is not an opera 😂
How is this a school production? The drama department at my school has no money, but they still put on amazing productions
Nahren Neno Rent pretty much just 1 set and they bring in things and remove them ween the scene over unlike other musicals where the have to keep changing sets
Rent sets usually aren't very expensive. A couch, a table, a stage, and a lot of metal walkways xD
In the "How we gonna pay?" Mark and Roger are usually screaming at eachother. I don't think either of them were angry enough
Agreed.
The best acting pulls off experience. They've never paid rent. Let alone been at that point of anxiety you're behind on rent, worried about ending up on the street with no solutions and no money.
They don't have that pain in their voice.
This a high school production. For that, it's amazing!
This was one of the most amazing high school productions of Rent I’ve seen. So good. Well done!
mimi & roger...wow...just...wow
I do this for a living. Direct and choreograph with young people. This is great. Really appreciate the creative casting involving the increased ensemble size. Just like a high school should. This Collins while vocally still growing was so riveting. Perfect! Y'all betta work! Yaasss!
Thank you for uploading this, what an incredible cast, and wonderful staging.
The kid that played mark really didn't do it for me
I feel like his mike wasn't on at all
I agree
Gerardo Galarza honestly... this is by far the best school Mark I’ve ever seen
This is a hard musical to do. I think the girl who played Mimi could have gotten more into her character.
Rachel Sawyer I believe so to.I saw no emotion really coming from her portrayal of Mimi...well the ending was a definite improvement
Mimi is a difficult character for a highschooler to play, very complex. Not many people let alone teenagers could relate to a drug addict, stripper with AIDs. Potentially too young to fully get the character, she did a really good job though
The ultimate scorpio
From the way she moves in her body and how she doesn't seem comfortable or to know her body every well. And her fake moan was a rock howl lol. And that it's highschool kids.
She's likely a virgin, which would make it difficult to fully portray a street worker lol
Oh my god this school did Contact, I can't even imagine my school doing this, and we just finished our production of Rent. I'm super surprised
When Tango Maureen came on, my eyes got so wide when mark cursed because I wasn’t expecting that!
"what kind of high school did y'all go to" "public school"
omg who plays Collins I love him!
Samantha O'Donnell Like for real. I hope he goes into musical theater professionally. Same with whoever played Roger.
Angel's performance in Contact was so heartbreaking, I loved it!
This is amazing! I’m glad theatres are still performing this amazing musical🖤
This was incredible! What a fantastic job by a high school cast - and kudos to the faculty and school for pushing to be able to show it. Well done!
After having been a RentHead since forever, and a retired teacher, I’ll grade the company...
Ensemble: A
Mark: D- He looked like he was just going through the motions.
Roger: B-
Mimi: C- Put more emotion into your performance
Mark’s Mom: A
JoAnne: B+
Maureen: C
Collins A+
Benny: B-
Angel: D
Orchestra: A+
Director: A+
BTW: 2nd Act had more energy than first...
I give the whole play a C
They are high school kids my goodness. And I really liked this mimi. Could've had more emotion but once again, is in high school. Great voice on her
The filmmaker cannot see . . . his movies on Amaaaaaaazzzzzoooooooonnnnn! Couldn't resist. Great job, everyone.
Well done everyone. And just like that a new generation was created.. ‘no day but today’
I want to do this show so much! Unfortunately my school would never allow it, we have to do really boring stuff like Snow White!
Lara Mullings same, we did Aladdin last year but we actually get to do Legally Blonde this year
Catdog550 Aladdin is still so much better than Snow White. Our production was a crappy 30 minute show with no songs and was written by the teacher, and that's one of the better shows we've done...
Lara Mullings I wish my school could do plays . We don't get to have them. But if we did I know my shock would never allow it sadly! It's such a great musical
You americans are so lucky to can do it! We in Brasil have no culture in our schools.
Same -_- I just got done doing the musical Cinderella at my school
As a huge Rent fan who grew up with the Broadway show and movie and has dreamed of being in this show since I was a little girl, this performance was absolutely amazing. I am so impressed. Wow.
Wow wow wow !!!! Amazing ! What a well done production in every way. Lots of talent for sure. Thank you for that !
not feeling Maureen, loved Joanne though omg
How were they able to do this in hs so lucky
this roger reminds me so much of hyde from that 70s show and i love it
This was a damn good performance. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Amazing work, for all I know is a public high school, doing this. Bravo!!!
I don't feel the excitement... it's like they're bored ... I feel like if they were more enthusiastic about it, it would be decent to watch
same i was just saying how tired angel looks
Thank god I’m not the only one that thinks this!!!!
It's probably nerves. I feel like it was really good for what it was, with a lot of room for improvement. This is such an ambitious project. I give them a lot of credit.
I think most of them were pretty good...but Mark was...not it
Oh nvm Maureen was.....oh lord....same wt Mimi
The guy that played mark seemed so unenthusiastic tbh. However, the singing was great for a HS production
I really loved Collins and Joane
Bravo!
We need more RENT, we need more seasons of love!
How did they get away with mooning in a high school performance???
The kid playing Angel isn't really singing, but is more talking. I think they forgot that this was a musical.
1:45:55 I feel bad for laughing, but Contact was so bad 😂😂😂
This would be great with time stamps.
Lucky you guys. School in Texas, we got in trouble for doing Once Upon a Mattress. Couple has premarital sex. Can't portray anything that the kids don't already know. Can't portray homosexuality even though 11% of the school is queer. Guess we'll ignore the AIDS crisis just like Reagan did.
Great show, guys. Jealous I wasn't able to get this when I was in high school.
I WISH my school did this
So good. From reading the comments, surprised nobody mentions the guy playing Mark. He nails it.
i thought that Mark was okay but compared to some of the stronger performances like Collins and Roger, he didn't stand out quite as much. plus i though his stare looked a bit dead most of the show
The guy who plays Mark lacks energy.
Stephen Rees The guy who played mark was bland imo. He lacks energy, emotion and volume. All the things that other guys who played Mark in other productions have.
Are you kidding me? He had no excitement or energy like Mark has.
Wow I would have never thought any High School could have pulled this off Jonathan Larson would have been proud
Man the kid who played Roger is on fucking point.
i'm so glad you guys got to do this show!
its pretty cool that they got Anthony Padilla to play Roger
Isaac And shayne topp for Mark!
omg rodgers mom is so good!!!!
Um okay but the ensemble is so good?????
The kid who played Collins looks exactly like Ansel Elgort!
Mimi, Roger, Collins and Joanne were so good!!!! the whole show was amazing!
There are a lot of comments about could have been a little bit more anger in that one part. Mimi isn't quite gritty enough..
These are children with almost no life experience. And this is one of the hardest most gut retching human stories that barely any of us will experience.
Homeless
Drug addiction
Prostitution to feed the addiction
Aids.
These kids did fkin amazing!!!! They hit all the notes! And they played off each other perfectly which is what ensemble cast of RENT is all about!
I hope some of them go on to do big things!!
Angel needs more energy
you did a f**** great job. Nailed it! NO DAY BUT TODAY!
the singing is not that good but they did fantastic and props to the adults for letting them doing it
43:26 why is she doing that with her face
MiMi was amazing !!!!!!!!
Good Job. I liked it especially because when most High Schools do it they edit it to fit what high schools normally do, which kills Rent. Not the case with this production.
I’m not against making the musical easier to do so KIDS can do a better job on it. Plus, they are amateurs. In other words, they are not getting paid to do this.
Bravo to the kid playing Roger tho. Holy shit 👏👏👏
I really love Collins and mark though
But why do they sing “minnnnattss” (minutes) like that thoooo 😭😭😭😭
Writing this at time 1:35:15 first off, Collins hella cute. second, i think he had the best chemistry with Angel but could work on not being so stiff. Once I realized Mimi was making it her own more than most productions, I gave her kudos. Mark....7.5/10. Maureen, no. Angel, that was some hard work. Best I've seen so far in a HS production. Oh yeah, I like Joanne even though she didn't so "We're ok" with the right context
Overall, really great show. Will probably come back and watch it again later.
Mark & Roger should be on the stage at the beginning, not upstairs. Same thing with Light my Candle.
Man, Roger and Collins are great!
Collins is the cutest!
holy shit without you was absolutely breathtaking
im in love with the mimi
I don’t like how they cornered mark and Rodger in the beginning there suppose to be center stage
Just one criticism, and it's common in a lot of high school level musicals. The music drowns out the singing in some parts and is just too loud in others.
This guy done very good but I think Rodger should have a slightly deeper voice
Actually Roger usually needs a more belting voice, like the capacity to get to high notes like Pascal did.
These are also high school students... puberty.
THANK YOU. I was like "Why these people gotta be so negative? Geez."
I thought angel and Mimi could've gave a little more
Props to the kids and the school for doing RENT. My issue is that 1) I can’t hear the vocals. 2) Much like Rent LIVE, it seems like they are phoning (pun intended) in the notes. Still, it looks like a good production.
one song glory was so good wow
*high pitched shrieking running around my house*
Did they forget to put batteries in their mics?
No they just had a really old sound system with many issues. It's a work in progress trying to fix it
I just wasn’t feeling no day but today. The rest was pretty good for a high school production
