In Tick Tick Boom Jonathan is told to write about what he knows, and when you look at his life you can already see the pieces of RENT coming together. The way he lived, the friends he had. Amazing.
So true the way his friends are portrayed you can see pieces of his friends in each character it amazing that they where able to show that link in the film

Just saw tick tick boom and came here. Jonathan Larson was amazing, its a shame he never got to see how big of a success his show was. I wonder what amazing musicals and songs the world could have had if he were alive.

It most certainly did for me, Tick Tick Boom sent me down a rabbit hole, even just ordered the book Boho Days to read up more on Johnathan’s story.

This makes me tear up. The memories of a theater kid who can't sing and dance but had a dream. Been given chances to do it in school and outside. Never the main cast but a proud member and ensemble. Theater made me the person I am today. I'm 29 and Jonathan made me think about where I am and where I am headed
Anyone else suprised that others have only more recently discovered the music RENT due to tick tick boom.. like makes sense but this has been one of my favourite musicals ever since it came out and I'm just so suprised how many don't know this musical!?
Good it’s getting recognized more now! I never heard of rent until my dad bought the DVD of the 2005 movie when I was around 13 years old and I loved it ❤ I forgot about it all these years until just recently at 30 years old 😢❤

I remember watching the BTS stuff on the dvd, and Tracie Thoms said she wasn't much of a singer. Like, girl, pls! 😂 She and Jesse Martin ATE here and left NO crumbs!

I'm gonna be one of those people who has no clue what tick tuck boom is (where can i watch it?), but I'm an old, longstanding fan of RENT. When it first debuted, my mother took me to see it at the Pantages. I was 16. If i recall correctly, she got seats in the 2nd row, which was insane. When i tell you it was one of the best musical experiences I've ever had, that won't even scratch the surface of how madly in love I fell. It was revolutionary at the time. The fact that it was such a massive success is nothing short of amazing.
I can't get through this song without crying. It's meant so much to me. It teaches us to be grateful for the little things and to never place so much importance on wealth, success, and goals. Taking the time to measure our life in love, friendship, sunsets, and something as simple as cups of coffee. This musical forever changed my perspective of life in general. Fighting for what's right, treating every day like a gift, and being a good person are important aspects we all should actively do.
The only song that reaks of the 90s is "I Should Tell You." The rock ballad aspects make me laugh, which i know isn't the intended emotion they were going for. The hell fo you expect when 90s cheese is shoved in my face? 😅 I say that with affection and a hint of cringe. It's also kind of an odd choice considering the musical is an 80s period piece. If you wanna include period music, it should've been 80s related. Oh well. I can't complain if that's my only gripe. Oh, and the poor dog getting offed. I get that Angel was desperate for money, but he could've lied to the old hag. He could've taken it to a shelter and she would've been none the wiser. I love Jonathan's work, but he could've thought of something else besides that.
Anyway, I'm glad a new generation of RENT fans has emerged. Hopefully it resonates with young people, even though their life experiences will be vastly different than someone in the 80s/90s.
I saw this 3 times with my late Dad. Still amazing.
My sister showed me this movie and I....I didn't expect to cry as hard as I did but alas...

If I recall correctly, they're called lofts. Considering how terrible ventilation was in them and the fact that most didn't come with anything (kitchenette, shower/tub, hookups for a fridge or oven, or even a room), they were a renter's last resort. They were like giant storage rooms.

Recently I've grown to love Larson's music, I've listened to the OG Tick Tick Boom soundtrack, seen Rent and also listened to a compilation record of unreleased material called "The Jonathan Larson Project" and I could safely say he could've been something akin to Elton John and Billy Joel had he lived, to me three of them are my musical trinity ❤️
More akin to Michael Jackson! Because like Michael, Jonathan knew what what worked. Not just the fans, but with the world. They both put their hearts and souls into everything they do. Also they both wanted to open the eyes of people that were and still dying. They both cared about human beings being who they where.

This song is instructive on the scale of large numbers. Numbers gets so thrown around these days... how many miles to the moon? I actually looked at the math, and indeed, a year is "only" 525,600 minutes. Seems like it should be more? We have no conceptual understanding of numbers.
I remember reading a list “You Know You’re A Rent Fan When….” and one of them was “You know how many minutes are in a year without having to do the math.”
