The Dar-ul-Islam Movement (also called “the Dar”) was established in the United States in 1962 by three African American converts to Islam: Imam Yahya Abdul-Kareem, Rijab Mahmoud and Ishaq Abdus-Shaheed. It has been called one of the first and most significant grassroots movements established by African-American, orthodox (Sunni) Muslims in America.
"Dar-ul-Islam is the people’s effort to return to Allah.” This simple yet profound statement appeared in the July 1974 issue of Al Jihadul Akbar, the Dar-ul-Islam (The Dar) monthly magazine. The Dar was established in 1962 and at its height, included a network of 30-40 Masjid across the country.
The People‘s Effort Oral History Project led by Dr. Kameelah Mu‘Min Oseguera addresses the gap in the documented history, significance and presence of this movement in the United States. In this webinar [March 6, 2024], MWF Founding ED and Peoples Effort Project Director Dr. Mu‘Min Oseguera is joined by Dr. Samiha Rahman [Assistant Professor of Human Development at California State Univ- Long Beach] and former Dar member El-Hajj Ali Muhammad do a deep dive into the lessons offered through this influential African American Sunni movement. It will also draw connections between MWF's year long reflection on Home & Hijra - how we aspire for freedom and well-being through intentional community building.
