Im not buying that fancy simulation wheel (for 2k). He is happy that next year he is not going to pay that much for his appartment anymore. That is great ! And he studied 3D design which I really common and also very hard earning money with.

    Great advice. Especially about coming up with new ideas to earn.
    On a NatWest piggy note - I once had to relicense and rerecord part of the piggy song. I tracked down the original arranger who was a guy called Fred Tomlinson. He was in his 80s by that point. Turns out, he did all the arrangements for Monty Python too - the Spam song, the Lumberjack etc. Absolute legend. If that wasn't enough, his brother was also Ernest Tomlinson!

    Another good video. And I think the last part is especially important for anyone looking to start a TH-cam channel: make no mistake, Christian is as much an entrepreneur as anyone else he mentioned at the end of the clip and the *proof* is just how often you, the viewer, think of Spitfire’s products whether Christian is mentioning the company by name or not: this Vlog stirs excitement about his great company’s offerings. The best marketing is marketing that doesn’t look, sound or feel like you’re being marketed to.

    i actually get paid Mechanical rights quarterly every quarter via Tunecore Publishing. They collect from digital mech rights like: itunes , spotify etc. It's a nice extra.

    I'm starting to have a hard time negotiating these deals and the split of publishing, mechanical, etc. Usually companies where I live didn't pay attention to the backend. But recently an animation got a massive check from the PRO and now it seems that all eyes are paying attention to this and thinking all checks are and have been massive.
    The mentality is becoming 'this music would never exist if it wasn't for this film project, so the rights should be ours and you should be happy we payed you an upfront fee' - a fee that is usually around 1%-2% of the overall budget. And they are not necessarily paying for the recordings. Its one creative fee and they just expect you to deliver everything. I usually reason with them because I take care of everything related to the music and deliver the final product, but they just don't really care.

    Thank you for this video Christian, absolutely brilliant. I’ve adopted the entrepreneur mindset and thinking outside box of how I can generate income through music; all the traditional avenues as well as merch (off the back of a personal brand / solo artist once the following is built), online courses for musicians and more.
    These are dark times for many, but the few who adopt the entrepreneurial mindset can see the gold beneath the dirt. It’s not easy, but it’s completely possible.

    Tyler Henson: Welcome to Rights Club! The first rule of Rights Club is: you always talk about Rights Club. The second rule of Rights Club is: you ALWAYS talk about Rights Club! This is a very good video, and briefly explains a lot of things. The cake, biscuits and piggys are undoubtedly a work of genius. ;O) You might talk about PRS and PPL at some length in a future video for those that unlike us, are not members yet. You could also talk about limited companies, becoming your own label, publisher etc. I suppose also.

    I'm a big fan of these vlogs- they're excellent, and I always advise that young composers learn about rights so they don't get exploited - but I have to query some of the explanations of the terms in the "cake" section of the video . It's a hugely complex area but my understanding has always been this - Publishing rights, which relate to the composition itself (which are inherently owned by the composer of the work until negotiated and subsequently signed away) are split into performance and mechanical rights. Performance payments and Mechanical payments are triggered by different uses of the work, but they both come under publishing. In the UK these are collected and administered by PRS and MCPS who now operate together under PRS for Music or can also be distributed directly by a publisher. The person or organistation who pays for a sound recording can lay claim to owning the Master rights which in terms of commercial music (chart releases for want of a better phrase) are generally handled/owned by record labels and administered by PPL. Library/production music use does not trigger a PPL or Master rights payment. Hope that's helpful!

    Using the two halves of a Victoria sponge cake to explain the division of income was a nice touch. When you fetched out the blanket I laughed. When you introduced the toilet roll, I burst out laughing!
    Using the Nat West Piggies and HRH was fun too, although I couldn't help thinking about the 'Piggies' promo in comparison to the new PRS membership grading...."when you save/earn £x, you get a bigger piggy / Membership voting rights"
    I don't know which bright spark decided to change this, but when I see Stuart from the PRS in February, I'll be trying to find out.
    Also worth mentioning, for those of you who own their own recordings and don't already know, you can join the PPL (BMI Stateside?). As I understand it, this gets your recordings a performance royalty too.
    Thanks Christian :-)

    1. What happens if you only work on a few cues, do you get a percentage of the various royalties (like working on a few tracks on a traditional album)?
    2. Thoughts on profit share projects, i.e. no initial fee but access to a share of more potential cakes? Obviously on a picture with distribution already agreed!

    Wonderfully Informative video, Christian, Thankyou so much. You didn't mention fee's involved with using companies such as PRS to discover your earnings - What % do they take, if any? Again, very helpful to this 19 yr old starting out in the business.

    • @MarioTorre
      @MarioTorre 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Stuart Bramwell Composer/Violinist they vary a lot but are not that much. Gema fir example charges around 50 euros per year, with a one time fee of 90 when you enroll. But you need to consider that enrolling only makes sense if you actually publish work, I been doubt it makes sense if you simply upload your stuff to sound cloud, and you then have the weird situation that you get to pay to use your own music for commercial purposes :) if you start publishing like for library music it makes a lot of sense though. Take care of the publishers that want you to wave your copyright, some online library publishers ask you that.

    • @thosesmallyesterdays
      @thosesmallyesterdays 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, you get to choose your publisher (when talking about libraries, sample packs, loops, etc and think about international sales) or you are "stuck" with the one responsible for your country?

    Such a complicated concept, great ground for trial and error! This project of yours is really helpful and inspiring though:) Here's one rookie's question.. If, let's say I have a great library of samples, field recordings etc, all produced by me and decide to create a sort of an online store, and name a price on each pack by its value, the behind-the-scenes work, etc, for everyone who decides to buy this package, these money come to me I guess.. So this pack gives back (package price) * (nr. of buyers). If a buyer then uses a sample as is, what happens? Depends on the agreement ? Varies on different countries?

    • @Woolookologie
      @Woolookologie 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never seen a paid sample pack that didn't give its users full rights to use the samples. Imagine having to pay percentages every time you use a Spitfire library, that would be terrible...

    • @thosesmallyesterdays
      @thosesmallyesterdays 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I had in mind.. But let's say you are a band, a musician or something.. You put your album in music stores, from iTunes to your very own site's online shop, physical and digital copies. People pay to have a copy of your work. If this music is used for a commercial use though, it needs another type of license, and I think you should get paid for that too (pennies or not, not the subject at this point). So, does the same model apply to libraries? A branding company for example pays for and grabs one of your packs and uses one of your loops in a commercial.. They bought it, yeah. But then that commercial brings also money to them or their customer and your (or theirs now?) loop is streamed over and over again and gets exposure.. What's the deal then?

    As always, thanks for the video Christian! I have a question for the people here who submit music to libraries: when you're submitting production tracks to your PRO, can you do it online or do you have to send them a form, where you write all your tracks and the needed information by hand? In Finland it's the latter one and I've always thought that the process of doing that is frustratingly inefficient. Just curious...
