Worth to mention and also to consider when you calculating the costs. Public transportation is very good in swiss and it is also expensive (as everything in ch) if you live ~1h commute time from a city where you work, and you need to commute lets say twice a week, each commute time may cost you CHF30 (30 Euros) or even more, so monthly it will be around 240 just for a commute. Of course you can buy monthly travel card for adults it will be CHF340 per month, and then you can travel how often you like wherever you wanna go. Which is pretty awesome, if you are moving around a lot
Good point, however I would say that 250-350 CHF per month is very affordable for transportation. A car costs you twice that each month and while more convenient sometimes it is technically less safe to travel by car than by train, even in Switzerland. If you make 10K gross salary per month in CH as a senior dev, the cost of the all inclusive train travel in 2nd class is less than 4% of your salary and often tax deductible or sometimes paid for by your employer. And it means you can use any public transportation in Switzerland and Liechtenstein 24/7 without having to worry about buying a ticket. Sometimes it's even valid for the funiculars to go up a mountain (selected places).
I just subscribed to your channel, you have very good content. Do you think it would be a good idea to move to a far place from Zurick to live in and use a car to to move work to Zurich? or cars ar too expensive? Thanks.
hi Raphael, thanks for making this video. What’s your take on living in Lugano and commuting to Zurich for work? I’ve seen that the train takes about 2 hours, which is not so bad, but I wonder about the drawbacks… I also wonder whether I’ll be spending on transportation essentially the same money that I’d be saving by not living in Zurich
What I am suggesting only works if you work the modern way, i.e. you work mostly from home, remotely, your own office near your home etc. while your clients / employer is usually somewhere else. Commuting every day from Lugano to Zurich is too much IMO and not what I would recommend. Also keep in mind that while rents are lower in Lugano, income tax is higher. So if you also lose quality of life and money by commuting every day, it does not pay off. If however you mostly work from home, it can make a lot of sense, esp. if your salary / profit is below 100K CHF.
The tax rates are just generally a good deal higher than in some other regions in Switzerland. So if you have an income above 100K, you will pay hundreds more per month, thousands more per year in income tax which you need to factor into your calculation when thinking of cost of living, rent etc.
I'm currently living in Italy and doing a bootcamp for Webdev in the MEAN stack, do you think I can find remote work opportunities in switzerland? is my stack in demand there? does already living in Italy gives me an advantage for potential recruiters?
@@38countries Not yet, like I said, I'm still doing the bootcamp so once it's finished I would apply to some remote jobs, the thing is I'm a junior webdev right now that doesn't know german let alone swiss german or french, so maybe my profile is not that attractive for potencial recruiters and companies, even though I can speak english, spanish and italian. What do you think? Do I have a chance in the swiss IT job market with my current knowledge and little expertise?
Hi Raphael, great videos! Just wondering, if I'd was considering moving to Switzerland (from DE), what are the job platforms most used by recruiters in tech in Switzerland, any recommendations? I work in UX design and have been working remotely for the past few years easily... here in Germany LinkedIn still is the most popular one, but for some reason not many positions show up when trying to search for CH. Also, since you moved from Germany as well, how do you feel about the acceptance of remote work in CH? In tech in Germany I feel nowadays it's no problem at all anymore to find a 100% remote job, in CH however I see a lot of hybrid roles with at least some days in the office in various job platforms. So does that mean remote work isn't as far progressed as maybe in DE, or how do you perceive it?
Yes, Switzerland definitely has many hybrid roles. Hard for me to say what the percentage is. I would say that you can definitely find pure remote roles as well which do not even require relocation to Switzerland at all. Or you could turn things upside down and work for a US company for example from Switzerland. I do not feel like the Swiss generally have a very different approach to remote work than the Germans. It's rather that full remote work is still a niche in most countries I can think of. The current trend goes away from 100% remote roles everywhere in the world unfortunately. Curious to see what it will be like in a year or two. I wrote an article about job platforms in Switzerland here: 38countries.com/ch/tech-job-websites-switzerland
hey raphael just subscribed you i found your content very informative very genuine I'm from india and i'm a computer science student and i'm planning to move to switzerland for a job i'm a web developer and i need a job in this field can you help me with some information that how i can find jobs in switzerland please. if you do so then i'll be so grateful to you😊 !!
Hi Deepakkumar, that’s a broad field. Do you have a specific question I can make a video on? Finding a job as a web dev in Switzerland is not fundamentally different from finding one as a web dev anywhere else. In Switzerland like many other countries you have a quota of people who can move to the country (non EU citizens), so it’s beneficial to be very good at eg. React.
