I visited Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia last summer and was blown away by the different cultures and how friendly everyone was. I wish more people from the states would travel to lesser known countries and experience how amazing the world is.

I don't know, I totally think these countries should be more respected, but too many visitors might ruin their pristine and otherworldy beauty. That's the best part of Northern Europe in my opinion. But the gorgeous and clean cities, fascinating history, amazing governments and social systems, as well as generous and polite people is obviously amazing too! Let alone the natural beauty 😍

I agree with the fact that people in the US should travel more outside their country. They would understand more about international relations that way. Currently the US is only exposed to the things fitting into US pop culture.

Some notes:
1. The Baltic Sea trade isn't the historical reason behind people living on the Northern coast. That's a recent development (last 150 years or so). Viking age didn't change the settlement patterns.
2. Weather - as "Nordic" as Denmark, or more. Depending on the year.
3. Livonian war. "Estonia" means two things in that conflict. The Duchy of Estonia (the former Danish Estonia) and the land of Estonia (the whole area where Estonians lived, roughly the modern day republic). The Estonia that went to Sweden was the Duchy. Southern part went to Poland, for 70 years, and Saaremaa to Denmark. Only by 1645 did the Swedes get the entire land of Estonia.
4. During WW2, Estonia was first invaded by Soviets, then Germans, then Soviets again. The first Soviet time is important to note, because that was the main reason why many Estonians joined the Germans - enemy of my enemy.

To further elaborate on 1. , just century ago wast majority of people lived in rural areas, spread out throughout the country.
Behind this are late internal migration.
Prior to WW2 (aka "vennatapu sõda" "fraternal-killing foreign-war"), Sõrve in Saaremaa was one of the most populous regions -- it was one of the least populous after that war...
Another reason behind it is urbanization - in multiple waves, that already started from more than two centuries ago.
One of the bigger waves was after Estonian independence at the first half of past century (eg: Petserimaa became one of the most populous regions during this, Petseri became town from a village, full of new wooden architecture. The town was nicknamed "little America" - a lot/most of it burned down in '39)...
This was followed by Sovietization which had it's authoritarian ways with population transfers: while north-eastern area had seen population increase, urbanization and intensified industrialization. After the WW2, Narva became nicknamed "women's town", as there was period when it was genuinely hard/rare to stumble upon any males as there were that few of them. This happened in combination of losses from the war as well as population transfers. Many locals, especially males, were deported from the entire area and were banned to return (in certain cases, banned for lifetime) + Soviets brought in lots of workers from Russia, due to need for labor in textile industry - predominantly female (lots and lots of young women -- with nobody to date with: which turned locals "romantic dreamers" - well, sort of). Also, lots of people were deported from the islands and costal regions due to the border zone and it's militarisation, followed by "iron curtain" (eg: in Hiiumaa, the Soviets used local farmsteads for bombing practice to train their air force). Soviet also conducted revenge-airbombings on Estonian settlements after the Germans were pushed out (eg: there was hardly anything left of Narva after this).
Another notable migration wave to towns came after Estonia's reindependence. Major reason, plain and simple, economics -- as revenge for independence declaration USSR, which had total monopoly over all economic ties at the time, declared sanctions - many people became unemployed almost overnight. With independence, restrictions on free movement within the country became next to non-existent in contrast to what those were before. Towns had more opportunities to offer than rural areas. Cities more than towns. Tallinn was and is next to wealthier countries...
Germany forced the Russians to give up Estonian after WW1 in the first place. When Was "Estonia" independent before then?
I remember in Stockholm during the Soviet era when People demonstrated for the Baltic Sates independence (many Estonians in exile etc). It is now a reality :)
I'm a resident of St. Petersburg, I'm glad that my first trip abroad was to Tallinn, Estonia in 2018. I will never forget these first impressions in just 3 days: old city, parks, suburbs, people, interesting architecture, transport, free workspaces in a library, quiet ordinary life. Only 3 days, and it means so much to me that it was possible, the first Schengen visa for half a year.
I wish all the best to this country and people in them.
As a Latvian I have always looked up to Estonia and how they do things. I just wish my origin country would have followed Estonias example. Thank you for this video, it is amazing.

Don't overthink it really. Differences between us are so miniscule that if you add some other country (like Finland) to comparison you see that we are basically the same.
It seems to me that Latvia is ahead with some things compared to Estonia tho...
@@xanperia of course, we are all tiny and come from same starting position. Comparing country averages wont even give whole picture as differences between regions inside same country are bigger than differences between our countries. We all have poorer and richer areas (like every other country).
I find the Baltic Way so touching and beautiful. I’m from Finland and was just a baby at the time, but it must have been incredible to see. Best regards to everyone in Estonia, Tallinn is one of my favourite cities in the world.
I was a 7 year old kid, when it happened and i remember my mom and my older sister getting there by bus full of people, I don't remmeber where exactly we were but it was in the middle of the countryside, somewhere on the road, where we stood in the human chain. I didn't understand at the time, what it was or why we were there, but it did leave an impression on me for life. Seeing just kilometers upon kilometers of people standing side by side, hand in hand, flags of all countries flown was a sight very few people will probably ever see in the history of the planet.

Estonia is a fantastic country - I visited for the first time last year and fell in love with the place! Tallinn is one of my favourite capitals, and the islands off the west coast are amazing with superb ferries giving easy access. I'll definitely go back one day!

Somethings I wanted to add.
1. Estonians at the middle ages weren't pagans, they were animists.
2. Estonians also helped out Latvians during their Independence war.
3. Treaty of Tartu also gave Estonia modern day Pskov oblast area and the right shore of Narva river.
4. Estonia was first country to get cyber attacked.

It's not the oldest flag. It's the oldest national flag that has been in use ever since its introduction. The Roman Empire already had a flag-like item the legions carried around, quite familiar to any European, or non-European interested in European history.
Estonia doesn't have a Nordic cross flag, though. It has a continental tricolour style flag. You might say Estonia didn't feel Nordic when they created that core symbol of their national identity. It's only later a portion of Estonians did feel like their country should be Nordic.

Looking from Finland I think Estonia gets overlooked a lot in our public speech. Estonians do some things different to us, but there is a lot to share and relate to.
As an Estonian, I will always consider myself Baltic, considering our history. Latvia, Lithuania will always be our siblings

I've visited Estonia a couple of times from Sweden. It's like a mix of Sweden, Finland and some place with cheap beer, haha. Love it.
I believe historically Estonia has gotten a huge part of it's identity from Sweden over the hundreds of years we were under your rule. Also from the German rule. The western coast of mainland Estonia and the islands had extensive Swedish settlement even during the time when Estonia was "officially" under Russian rule during the 1800's and up-to WWII. There are several places in Estonia that have a "Rootsi tänav" or "Swedish street". A street name. On the island of Hiiumaa, there's also Rootsi küla or Swedish village.
Many of the names on some of our islands or on the west coast are totally foreign to me, but should sound very familiar to you, like: Rumpo, Söderby, Norrby, Fällarna, Sviby, Österby, Lyckholm, Persåker (I don't even have that å letter on my keyboard, that is on our official map of the country) and many more.
It was the Swedes that gave us Lutheranism, schools for ordinary people and many of our now traditional names like Kristiina, Karl, Erik, Inge, Magnus and so on. Also it was the Swedish king that started the University of Tartu in 1632. Our Oldest and most prestigious school.
Also, until we adopted the "Euro" our official money was called "kroon".
And these are only a few things from my limited knowledge. So Sweden had a major role in our History and development.

Estonia is the country that we estonians talk a lot of smack about but when times get tough, we unite like no other. I am proud to be estonian.
Honestly when I visited Talinn I felt like I was in Gothenburg.
Chill people, a small city with a lot of tech soul to it, and a nordic look to the old town.
I felt like I have not left home.
When i visited gothenburg there was a car on fire, trash all over the street and another car was on bricks lacking wheels and most importantly, there was no people out. Felt like i was entering a war zone, which was strangely eerie. It was starting to get dark tough, so the last could be that people were just turning in for the night. I think it was like 10 years ago or around there.

6:55 My father was born in Tallinn. Him and his mother were forced to flee their Motherland during WWII because of the Russians. My Vanaema tried to get to Finland where many Estonians tried to flee, only to have the Russians torpedo the ships leaving. My Vanaema and my father ended up n in the USA post-WWII (via DP camps in Germany) with my Vanaisa escaping Siberia only to be forced as an interpreter for the Nazis (long dark history of our family). My Vanaema, Vanaisa and father never made it back to Estonia (Tallinn) before they died. I am fortunate to have found my long lost family in Estonia via genealogy/DNA companies, and will FINALLY be able to bring my father's ashes home this summer 2024 as well as meet my family there. It brings tears to my eyes to have this opportunity to visit family AND to bring my father home. There are no words to express how much this means to not only myself but my family still in Estonia 💙🖤🤍
Update: I did ANOTHER ancestry/DNA website test, and it too shows that I have both Estonian and Finnish as well as a small percentage (2%) Swedish genetics from my father's side of the family. I am still going to visit my relatives in mid-June (and celebrate my birthday on midsummers festival -- yes, my birthday is a national Estonian holiday, very exciting!). Again, looking forward to not only visiting my dad's side of the family in Estonia but also my cousins in Finland, too. I believe Estonia 🇪🇪 is more of a Nordic country than a Baltic country, especially with much of my family's ancestry going way back in history to Finland and Sweden.

Wow it is insane that I could've been in a similar situation as you or not even born. My Great Grandmother was supposed to be on one of those ships going to Sweden, she was planning on leaving with a friend of hers from school. She decided against it due to falling in love. The ship she was supposed to be on was eventually sunk and her friend died in the sinking of the ship. There's a likely chance that I wouldn't exist or would be from Sweden instead of Estonia (I know a few friends from Sweden online who can trace their ancestors to Estonia or at least had some family members living there who came back to Sweden during the war)
And I don't think you should be ashamed of your Grandfather's time as an interpreter. Pretty much almost every Estonian who fought with the Germans were only doing so in an attempt to get the Soviets to leave, hoping that while under Germany's sphere of influence they would be a free and independent nation, obviously now we know how terrible it would have been but in those days people chose the Germans over the Soviets due to the terrible treatment they received during the initial occupation in 1940-41. He most likely would have been in the 20th Waffen SS Grenadiers (1st Estonian) "20. Waffen SS Grenadiers (1. Estniche)" which while sure committed war crimes on the battle field have had no significant claims of true war crimes against civilians which many German and foreign units had. The war crimes on the battle field were an every day occurrence on the Eastern Front, it is the bloodiest theatre of battle in the history of human kind. The link to the SS and Nazis is a big talking point about modern day Russians as to how Estonia is a "Fascist" or a "Nazi" country. But that is only because they were doing what they thought was right for their Fatherland "isamaa" and in an attempt to never again be under Soviet rule.
And I'm happy you are returning to your roots and letting your father rest in his true home. No matter where you are or when you were alive, Estonians are one large family

The only aspect is the Uralic language - which is still no less European than any Indo-European language

I am from Germany and visited northern Finland in March.
Now planning a weekend trip to Helsinki and Tallinn for next month.

As Norwegian, I fully believe Estonia can into Nordic. After all, we need to become *even* stronger, and Estonia is my favourite country, so o would be happy to have them.
As an Estonian, i love all of our Nordic neighbors, but out of them all, i think Norway is my favorite. Have been there a few times, last time during the winter season a few years ago, up north in Tromsø. The way the city hugs the giant mountains, the fjords, everything in early christmas season lights.. Oh lord, such a mindblowing and beautiful place, absolutely magical. I miss the place already, last time, we didn't have much time to go sight-seeing and such, but i'm thinking about grabbing the family and visiting this summer, my kids would love it for sure. The mountains alone are just amazing.

as Estonian, there is one small thing i'd like to add. In the II world war, soviets occupied Estonia first, then came germans and then soviets again. After the first year under soviets, estonians welcomed the germans as saviors, so horrible had the soviet occupation been for a year.
A very similar situation developed in the other territories occupied by the Soviets in 1940 - Latvia, Lithuania, Western Ukraine, Western Belarus and Bessarabia. Consequences of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact...

Reading some comments there seems to be some confusion about Estonian Independence. which I will try to clarify.
Estonia declared independence in 1918. It was part of the Czarist Russian for approximately 200 years.
At the end of World War 1 parts of it were briefly occupied the Kaizar Germany .
When WW 1 ended there German Freikorps , along with White Russians Red Russian and of course Estonian Independence fighters helped by Finns who in turn also helped Latvian independence fighters.
By February 2020 independence fighters had pretty much full control of the country. These fighters also received some help from the British navy. The Soviet Union which was still engaged in a Civil war with pro Soviet forces willingly signed a Peace Treat in February 1920
with Estonian Independence fighters and it was from that date which the Estonian 1st Republic began. During the he war of independence there was a lot of government by Estonians.
The period before 1920 is known as the Russian era not the first Soviet Era. Even though the Tartu Peace treaty was signed with the Soviets it is important to note that the Soviets (Reds) were still engaged in a Civil war with Czarist Forces (Whites) so their involvement in Estonia was practically non existent . Apart from the Estonian Independence fighters who were well organised the residual German Freikorps and White Russians still in Baltic's only the Soviets had some organization. The Tartu Peace treaty was signed with the Soviets because it was clear that among the German Freikorps, White Russians and Red Russians only the Reds had any future so their recognition of Estonian Independence was needed .
The first independence period lasted 20 years until 1940 when the Soviet Union invaded. This occupation which lasted one year is the first Soviet period.. In 1944 Nazi Germany and the axis powers launched Operation Barbarossa (the largest ever invasion) and Estonia and the rest of the Baltic's came under German control. until 1944.
In 1944 the Soviets ejected German forces from Estonia and the second Soviet period from 1944 to 1991 began.
Despite a lot of propoganda by the Soviets accusing Estonians of being pro fascist it is important to point out that Estonia unlike Vichy France (for example) was occupied by Nazi Germany between 1941 to 1944 until the Soviets became the occupiers
During world war 2 Estonians were drafted into both Armies and faught on both sides or joined the Finnish Army if they could. Consequently Estonia was never a Fascist State , just as Finland is not considered as such although they were at war with the Soviet Union during this period.
I hope this clarifies some questions. 😊

You can see this in variations of different paternal haplogroups. Finns and Estonians came at the same time to Estonia, and from there Finns moved upwards north. So we aren't descendants of Estonians, rather we were connected and part of the same tribe once.
You also claimed in a previous thread that Rurik was Estonian. He was most likely Swedish, but if we are buying the genetic study of him, he was Finnic man born close of Sweden and Finland, he had Finnic haplogroup specifically found in Sweden and in some parts of Finland.

Estonia is colder than Denmark and Estonian summers are usually colder than Finnish

Estonian weather can be rather moody and surprisingly variating over quite small distances - even in temperatures.

Seeing many comments complimenting Tallinn here. Just for reference, for most estonians, Tallinn is quite depressing. Go see the islands and southern estonia aswell (strongly recommend visiting during the summer).

I've just always thought of Estonia as an unofficial southern Finland
It is not and Finland was never a part of the Soviet union. Estonia 🇪🇪 was and it is a Baltic country with Latvia 🇱🇻 and Lithuania 🇱🇹. Economics of the Baltic countries are far behind the Nordic countries.

I visited Estonia in 2018 during my solo trip without much knowledge about the country. Initially, it was just a stop I was adding to my trip but as I read more about its culture and technological advancement (as I am a tech enthusiast), I became intrigued. As a lover of Finland for its music and nature, I was also interested to see Estonia. Despite visiting during a dark and depressing time in my life, I am grateful to have spent two weeks there. It has become one of my favorite places to visit, and I plan on going back one day.
You didn't really refer to it during the Danish rule part but:
Tallinn is even called the "danish city" in Estonian, Taani (danish) Linna (city)
The cathedral St. Olaf's Cathedral in Tallinn was built by the Danish rule and was even the tallest building in the world for a while
On top of this the Lyndanisse castle walls that still stand were also built by the Danes.
Besides this the coat of arms of Estonia is a direct copy of the Danish one as well.
Is it a natural (regular) vowel contraction that it is Tallinn but not Taallinn, or is it a change unique in this name? I'm a linguist and always curious about various phenomena in languages.
"Danish castle", not "danish city". Not proven, but almost general consensus and at least I don't know any other versions.
St. Olaf's Cathedral has probably never been highest building in the world. According to one source (and only one!), it's height between 150x-1625 was 84 fathoms. But which fathoms? In Tallinn fathoms it makes just 134 meters. Also according to various drawings it's height was same as now. Spire was restored in 1651 with height of 135 meters, which is another good hint, that 84 Tallinn fathoms was probably right. And this isn't enough to make it the tallest building in the world at any point in history.
Goat of arms ... well, colors are more or less same as of Danish, but lions are more English. Historically it is not proven, where these 3 lions came from. And also, why they look as they do, on modern GOA.

The only thing the differentiates them is that the Danish coat of arms has hearts (waterlily pads) and that the lions on the Danish CoA look to the left while the Tallinn lions look towards the viewer.
I'm afraid you made a big error. In WWII, Estonia was invaded by the USSR in 1940, then Germany kicked them out in 1941, only to be pushed out in 1944. That invasion of 1940 was very important in that the Estonians were treated brutally by the Russians. Life under the Germans was actually better....then the Russians returned.
