  • Door handles are kinda important. This is obvious especially when the handle breaks. Replacing the busted plastic with metal should do the trick!
The work is performed on a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The processes shown here will apply to similar vehicles.

Literally have had 4 broken handles in the last year. Before that, no issues. Had tried original parts and aftermarket. Continued wondering… why hasn’t anyone made full metal parts? Thank you so much.

Boys driver side door is very hard to open from the outside. It feels like you have to pull up on the handle to the point it will break! Is there an adjustment for this? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance

There is some adjustment in the lever rod the handle acts on. The previous video I did on this should show it (link is in the description). You'll be looking for a yellow tab on a connector that holds the handle rod to the latch mechanism. This tab opens up a grooved holder, and the handle rod can be adjusted inside this connector.
If memory serves, you will want to "push" the handle rod as far up in the connector as possible, then close the yellow tab. This should allow the exterior handle to open the latch sooner in its travel arc.

    Any advice on handle hardware?

I used bolts with locking nuts/washers. Because this is a common failure, I didn't want the hassle of drilling out rivets in the future.

@@SoloRoosterGarage yeah I want to use bolts but what size …

1/4 bolts with a hex head is what I used, 1 inch length. I would go with the nylock nut over locktite (less mess).

Still holding up well? I was one of the people that suggested these. And I think I’m gonna do this for my ‘99 Ford Ranger, but have them painted first though.

So far holding up well. They've only been on the Sport Trac for 4 months as of this writing. After this coming winter will be a better time to review.

Will these handles fit a 2002 ford explorer sport? All I see are exterior handles for the sport track.

These handles should fit the Sport Trac, Explorer Sport (2 door), and the Mountaineer.

Just ordered one myself for testing after coming across on partsgeek. My back passenger handle is the only original as well, is this common for some reason?

It really depends on use case. They're not a strong design from the get go.
