    Great job, had one of these when I was 17, overhauled the engine myself, I was a mechanic. Don't throw the old engine away!!

    Well done. It's great to see these old cars being resurrected from the grave. Mind it's a sobering thought when I remember them first coming out back in the sixties bringing back great memories. Thank you.

    Lovely motor! Great work and it's so nice to see people like yourselves keeping these parts of motoring history alive and well 😊
    Definitely keep the original engine though and maybe carry out a few cheeky mods, valve and head work, crank regrind and mains and big ends, slight overbore and fresh pistons etc... a few period tuning ideas from the book of David Vizard maybe!
    Main points the A series can leak from: Tappet chest covers at the rear of the block, gear selector housing gasket, rocker cover gasket( usually due to the metal being deformed from over tightening, you can try gently tapping the area where the bolts fit through with something like an old socket and use some gasket goo on the cork seal, helps keep it in place when fitting as well!) And also known them to leak around the timing chain cover, oil filter housing and crank seal. Sounds bad but all relatively easy and cheap to remedy. Also make sure the oil trap/separators aren't blocked as this will force the oil out! Not sure now how many on the older A series but there's at least one on the timing chain cover and maybe the clutch side of the gearbox at the top. Also make sure the breather pipes aren't blocked or loose fitting. You should be able to blow through the pipes and breathers relatively easily, if you can't then that's a sign of a build up of carbon. Remove, fill with warm water and caustic soda for a few hours then clamp a piece of hose pipe on and use mains water pressure to flush, should work a treat 😊

    Well done on that headlining Mum! I never understood why more manufacturers didn't opt to glue the headlining to the roof, it gained so much headroom at no cost. I used to love my 1967 Connaught Green 1100, whining non-synchro first gear and all.

    Love what you've done. To me this is what a practical classic is all about - restoring a loved car on a budget. Not everyone can afford tens of thousands on a full, professional restoration, and it's good to see a loved car get back on the roads. You should be rightly proud.

    Great stuff ! Way back in about 1971/2 the clutch failed on my mini van . It was pretty normal for the crankshaft seal to fail and let oil onto the clutch. Anyway being a fit "pig headed" so and so l stripped off all the easy to get at bits, wrapped a rope around the engine / gearbox , stood on the bonnet slam panel and proceeded to lift the assembly out of the van ! What a twit ! 5ft 8" , 10 stone & 18year old ! Needless to say that doesn't happen any more ! Thanks for sharing !

    I love my Fords (I am restoring a 1974 Cortina Mk.3, I have owned 45 years!) on my channel, but I "Loved" seeing your videos on Maggie, as I remember these lovely old cars, brand new, on the road when I was young, and so nice to see someone your age into classics, well done, she is a lovely little car, nice to see her being loved, and that your doing the work you can on her, that builds a bond between you and the car, which in my case has lasted 45 years!, and I hope you and Maggie last as long, I like all classic cars, and little Maggie and your efforts certainly deserve to be admired,

    Watched both videos & it's amazing what can be done on a tight budget.
    I bought a 2003 Holden VY S Series I Ute back in mid 2014 for AUD$1800. Mechanically it was spot on but the body was tired. A friend bet me that I couldn't restore it for AUD$10,000 & that included the cost of the ute. Everything in it was replaced with NOS, prepped & painted the body. In the end I went just over $100 over the $10K. I still won the bet & it looks as though it came off the showroom floor. Sadly now that Holden has no NOS around so I was lucky.
    You did some great work at getting the old girl looking like new & I'm sure you'll be hunting around for bits & bobs. keep the old engine in case you get a better budget to do a full rebuild.

    Fantastic what can be achieved on a budget and she looks amazing.
    A second hand engine can be a real time saver but is itself old, so don't go giving away the engine that came out.
    A set of new bearings, gaskets and carefully gapped oversize rings, will likely see that fit for many more miles to come, done at your leisure without the pressure of the car being off the road.

    Excellent work Emily! Don't be too quick to trash the original engine though as it could be a fairly straight forward repair. Look for worn valve stem seals, stuck piston rings, worn timing gears. Ovaloid cylinders could be lined. Also check to make sure the correct oil is being used as per the manual - inferior quality oils can cause many problems.

    My Mini 1000 was always leaking oil. I'd change a gasket, and then the next one would go. Same with oil seals. Oh, the joys of old cars.

    Could you imagine owning a car now without all those electronics that want to fail - Simplicity is great

    • @skylined5534
      @skylined5534 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And I think only two main fuses in the engine bay!
      Modern (even relatively modern, simple) cars are terrifyingly complex by comparison. If something electronic fails out on the road the only way home is usually via a flatbed!

    That takes me back to when I was about 12 when my dad bought a new Morris 1100 he also had a MG1100 and MG1300
    I also had a Austin 1300 and a Austin 1100 in the 1980s

    Funny how certain cars have a pull on memories. I learned to drive in my Dad's red 1100 in 1964 aged 17. Same strip speedo as Maggie! He worked at Morris Garages in Oxford at the time and I was apprenticed at Shrivenham so he would let me drive to my work early Monday mornings and still be in to his work at 9. He always picked me up at Oxford Station Friday evenings.
    Sadly he passed away 4 years later but I always remember that red 1100 and the time he put in when he was not 100% to help me. Someone is peeling onions here!
    Currently restoring a '78 Mini 1000......

    Great videos. I am somewhat surprised thst you did not open up the engine and try to identify the culprit and repair and replace parts as you went along...after all you took half the engine apart to repair the damaged valve previously.

    It's a British car and it is a British tradition as with British motor bikes to leak oil. I think we ended up owning with a Wolseley 16/60

  • @Radfordperson
    @Radfordperson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Brilliant video, loved it. Stupidly, I gave away my 1300 Vanden Plas Princess a few years ago. Did you use the old engines cylinder head on the new engine? It would likely be a 12G295 head, somewhat better than the 12G202 fitted to the standard Austin / Morris 1100s?

    In my view (and when they were released I was completely anti,!) the MG Riley and Wolseley variants have a really pleasing frontal appearance and since I wa a kid and Old Bill had Wolseley Squad cars I’ve always had a weakness for the illuminated rad badge!
