Nice job on the new front end. Super glad you got to get back out for a run before the weather gets bad. Looks like a storm is coming over the hill tops. Thanks for taking us along and take care. BigW;-)
The buggy is running great and a pleasure to drive on the dunes . Job well done on getting it dialed in. Take care and enjoy the week. Nice sound tracks too.
Hi, I just love this footage, it looks so relaxing, here in the UK if a two wheel drive is allowed generally you have go to a private off road site that has limited amount of permitted days a year and is usually small and muddy in winter then deeply rutted and rock hard in summer and pay a lot of money, there is nowhere like this that I have found, jealous you bet haha, I hope you all appreciate what you got
Good morning. Good tip on the fuel regulator. I get sand in the breather box coming from the valve covers. No problems with my air filters on the carbs. If your make the trip to Sand Mtn , Let me know, dinners and beverages on me. I Enjoy your take on the world .. 😎 from sunny Calif. it's suppose to be 90 today... Yikes!!!
Don't you have foam rubber in your breather box? It's self oiling but you have to watch it close. I wonder on your set up if you could get some of that outerwear material and make a cover. Might not look real cool but engines aint cheap. I've looked at Hobby lobby in there fabric's and I think you can buy it there cheap. I don't have a good way to sew that stuff. Was thinking of stapling it for a test hehe All that nats a$$ on jetting stuff is for guys that run on the street. I'm just to cheap to buy fuel injection and with the complexity I would still carry around my carbs in case the fuel stuff went out. Simple is always better but seldom efficient or perfect.
This is the kind I like best. I had it on there but it sat up so high I took it off. I may try to put it back on if I go to Pismo. carcraftstore.com/offroadcrankcasebreather.aspx No foam, has a K&N style filter the oil drains back down to the valve cover if you install it right. It will puke out a little if you don't maintain it. Let's face it. It's a necessary evil thing and if you don't have one oil will start leaking out somewhere else. Take care
Nice, have a street legal rail myself, has a ball joint front suspension, looking to replace the beam and go mid travel or long, upgrade to disk brakes, just finished air bags on rear swing Axle
Sounds great! If your at all into saving weight don't buy the Empi disc brakes they are very heavy and make a lot of noise. If I could make my rail street legal I would trade my link pin for ball joint any day. So much easier to align and maintain. The long travel front end on my rail has combo spindles (basicaly International Harvester tractor spindles) great for offroad but horrible for street. Literally no ackerman effect at all. Good Luck with your priject
It would just be 2 adults I live in Tampa. On the other side of my backyard fence in train tracks. I was thinking on following train tracks out of Tampa to less populated area and go from there
Hey i know its unrelated to the video, but if you could give me some advice it would be wicked appreciated. Is there a certain torque spec that a vw should rotate by wrench? I assembled my motor and it feels a little tight with jugs off, and very tight with jugs and heads on (no plugs). I know its not going to just go away due to expansion, im going to recheck the specs on the case nuts, but if i had to guess it takes around 40ft/lbs to turn the motor over with a ratchet. I reused my old crank, and didnt get any machine work done. What should my first step be?
With the case together and the rods hanging out it should spin like new ball bearing. Really easy both directions. I use motor oil on everything as I put it together. Same with the jugs and pistons. Oil it as you assemble. Yes there is some drag but a short 3/8 ratchet wrench should turn it. After you get the heads and valve springs and rocker arms you will feel more drag with the springs. If you have any doubts take it apart NOW! .Everything is clean and nice. The case half's are easy to clean up and reassemble. It's very easy to get one of the main bearing pins to shift and crush the bearing. Even if you screwed it up you might not have to get new bearings. But take it apart and check it by separating the case
TheEZGZ jeez youre a fountain of information my man.....one more quick one, i dont want to bother you. The tranny i have now is probably junk, it shifts rough and the gear oil is junk after about a month, as well as hard shifting (synchros?) Super low gears, great for offroad but i use it on road more than off and 50mph at 5200rpm is not desirable and certainly gets old not to be able to go fast. I Mostly just drive to and from the beach. Do you think if i were to buy a stock rebuilt trans from GEX, would it be a decent balance for off road and on road cruising? Keep in mind its a rail so its super light, and im going to have 30 inch tires in the rear. I can't thank you enough for all the information you have given me
Also I'm aware of the issues with freeway flyers, that's why am staying away from them. I heard they are not durable Offroad and can cause overheating issues due to lugging
50 MPH at 5200 with 30 inch tires doesn't sound right. You didn't say what kind of tranny you had but those numbers sound like a bus? Then you mention freeway flyer sedan. GEX stinks. You didn't even mention if it was swing or IRS? If your just playing around wait for a swap meet and see what you can find thats stock for a couple hundred and see how ya like it. Good Luck my friend.
TheEZGZ sorry shouldve mentioned its a swing beetle trans, im not sure where the trans came from but it was in the rail when i got it. Doesnt have 30inch on it yet but it will.
8000 ft !!! You say....😮 Cool ride .. Do you have a formula for jetting the carbs for altitude ? I'm having a problem with sand getting in the breather box, any suggestions? Do you like those desert trac tires? Colorado is a beautiful state, I lived in Grand Junction a long time ago. Heading to Sand Mtn outside Fallon NV this weekend with my sand rail. You have a great day..
Here is where I get air filter. as you can see I have the oiled cotton with outwear over that and finally Uni foam filter. I don't worry about jets. I use the standard formula for sizing on the street and don't worry about altitude to much because your always shifting and bouncing and accelerator pumps are squirting. I use a fuel regulator and set it at 1 PSI that helps a lot. It was loading up when I climbed that mountain going over the rocks. You need to stop and rev it and let it idle to use up that fuel that builds up. Some day I want to go to sand mountain.
I have a question for you. Would you consider a vw Baja bug to be a great bug out vehicle. You have always been honest good or bad? Let me know what you think. Thanks for all your great videos I have learned alot
It depends on where you live and what the terrain is like. If your serious you might want to consider a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The roads will be jammed up and watched closely. It also depends on the weather and what you need for shelter. The Baja Bug would make a fun scout vehicle that is not to aggressive appearing to catch a lot of attention. 20 years ago there would have been VW sedans all across the country to scavenge parts from. Not so much now. It also depends of your flying solo or have friends coming along. You have to sleep sometime..... The fact that it is air cooled and no electronics means that it is reliable and simple which in and of itself is very valuable. It .depends on what your needs are and what you can afford and where you live. I have a great book I will send you for free called ( Lights out) it's a 600 page PDF file and a great read. It's in story form and is full of practical information. It gave me a new insight on my bug out prepping. You can only buy so many beans and bullets and eventually you will run out or someone bigger and stronger will take them. Better to dig in and be part of a group. Give me your E-mail address and I will send it to you and then I will delete that info so the whole world don't see it.
That's what I was thinking too. It was my plan to get from work to home. I was going to go the 12 miles on a bike and kept a backpack in my locker with things to help me do that. I figured the roads would get plugged up quick and If I had to ditch the bike it wasn't a big deal.
It was a kit of cut out peace's you weld onto the stock Link pin it added about 4 inches to the shock tower. Any more than that and your tie rods start hitting the frame
Like I say, It depends on how wide your car frame is. I can't use all my travel because the tie rods hit the frame. The guy that had it before me must not have cared. I got a little bit more travel out of it but you can tell by the shaft where it was running. The springs were to stiff too. They cut and twisted the beam for lift but then the suspension didn't move unless you smacked something hard. It beats the heck out of the driver. If you get the front loosened up the back starts moving more and you get a nicer ride. Even the carbs are happier.
I mostly live in 3rd gear of my close ratio transmission. If I'm going slower up a long steep hill I may drop to second. A stock tranny with large paddle tires will spend more time in second gear. Also depends on sand condition. Deep dry fluffy sand will slow everyone down
Hi EZGZ, what a delight for me to get to meet you in person my friend, after years of watching your videos. Guys, he looks even younger in real life! LOL. 23 minutes into this video, was that a ground hog crossing the road?
I'll have to look. It was great meeting you as well. I wish we could have had more time. I could just see us out on this trip to Walden dunes to show you around and let you drive the car. I hope I have a rich uncle somewhere to leave me some cash so I can visit you in Petrolina. Take care my friend.
Hey EZ, Thanks for the video. I've been watching your channel for years, but I rhink this may be my first comment. I was hoping to find some good resources on what to do with a king and link pin front/Swing Axle Rear suspension in order to provide it with a conservative/moderate but quality all around off-road performance increase. I would like to think my 63 bug has been adequately converted to a badass baja, However, the reality of the situation is that the 7 piece fiberglass kit and bumpers, that from a distance - deceitfully lead you to believe the car has a cage, DO NOT provide much more than mental inspiration and underserved/unwise confidence when straying away from the pavement. The vehicle serves as my daily driver and logs 65-100 miles per week commuting to work and getting me anywhere else i decide i need to be. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to max out the offroad, high speed, desert type romping capabilities while not completely eliminating the road handling i will need 75% of the time. Everything is stock, but all components have been restored, and ceramic coated. Would love a little more travel, and to decrease the frequency of bottoming out i currently experience. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Even if it is a point in the right direction.
You have just described my own frustration. This is why I have a sandrail, manx replica and Street Baja. This book would be your best resource. www.cbperformance.com/product-p/2858.htm
@@TheEZGZ Gotcha, I just bought a buggy with a swing axle suspension and king-pin front end, that's why I asked. Probably going to turn it into a road buggy instead of an offroad buggy.
