Budapest 2022: Public Transport Tickets, Fines, and Validation Guide

The fine is now 12 000 HUF on the spot and 25 000 HUF if you pay later. Also some tickets and passes are more expensive. (For example, the airport shuttle bus ticket is now 1500 HUF)

If you're planning to get around much and visit as much as you can, then the day pass (or multi-day pass) is an excellent deal. And if you travel on a group you can save even more with a group pass. And you don't have to bother with validation when you use a pass.
Pro-tip: public transport also includes some boats on the Danube so you can have a mini-cruise included in your pass

It's the same as our trams here in Arizona (in the United States for those who don't know where Arizona is), the system is called "proof of payment"...you have a validated pass, or a QR code that you have to have on you. They spot check you at random, and If you don't have a pass, or you didn't activate your pass, you get fined $50-$500, with $500 being more for the repeat offenders. I find most tram systems in the US also use this method, so it is nothing new for the tourists going to Budapest, I hope :).

How does ticket controlling staff confirm the identity of the passenger before issuing a fine?

They give a couple of options: you can pay 8000 Forints on the spot, even with a card, or they record your credentials from passport or local ID, as far as I know.

Once u bought it from the machine it is already validated. It will ask u a start date while u purchase it so u dont need to worry
