Ruger "Precision" Rimfire 22.lr Rifle

  • The Ruger Precision Rimfire rifle has a lot of features for the price, fully adjustable stock, AR15 pistol grip, adjustable trigger, free float hand guard, 30moa pic rail and a threaded muzzle! I was able to get .9" 10 shot groups @ 50 yards and 1.5" 10 shot groups at 100 yards using Eley Edge. Overall the rifle is good but I don't honestly think I achieved any greater accuracy over my standard Ruger American Rimfire Rifle.

I got this rifle a little more than a month ago and every kind of ammo i put through it it loves. The last time i was out i had Winchester bulk ammo from Walmart and was doing 1 inch groups at 100 yrds. It was a calm day with very little wind.

First of all, thank you for your great reviews on your channel. I really enjoy them.
I am a new shooter.... I used to shoot a bit on farms when I was younger (many years ago), but decided to get back into shooting, but try it properly now, at ranges in Brisbane (Belmont), paper targets.
I purchased this exact rifle (my first rifle ever), and a Vortex 6-24 FFP diamondback scope. I purchased the rifle and scope from Cleaver firearms in Brisbane, Australia, as that is where I live. As I was going straight from the shop to the range after, I had Cleaver mount the scope for me.
I took it to the range, the first 20 shots were horrific, as it turns out the scope wasn't sighted in, but luckily another friend of mine, (not an expert ) was with me. When I was shooting, I couldn't get on target, and could not see where the bullets were landing. Luckily he was able to get a shot on the paper target, so from there he roughly zero''d in the scope, and he handed the rifle back to me.
At 50m, I was able to get 2 groups (with 2 different types of ammo), in just under an inch (apart from one "flyer" which would have extended one group to 1.5 inch - probably technique rather than equipment). They were 10 shot groups. For anyone interested the first group was CCI Standard Velocity, and the 2nd was Federal Auto match. I also purchased some CCI Stinger, for longer range, but haven't fired a round of that yet.
We had limited time (visit to Cleaver's, voting, lunch etc), but I will go back in a fortnight when I have time to put in more hours at the range. I was really happy with this rifle's performance... it was a brand new gun, and I believe it takes a number of rounds to break in a rifle. Plus I expect it will take many more rounds for me to get to know the rifle and also for me to acquire better skills.
I would like to ask though, if you happen to read this comment, where can I find a rife coach in Brisbane? Id appreciate any comments from other viewers also.
I want to learn to be better, but I frustratingly haven't found any coaches from google searches. I'd like someone good to use my rifle and scope, with a few different types of ammo, help zero my sight properly and help me decide which ammo I will use for training/practicing, so when I go to train or practice, I can blame any bad shots purely on myself, not my equipment... I think that will help me be a much better shooter. Plus I'd like coaching on the technical aspects of shooting...
I would really appreciate any suggestions you may have to offer, or any constructive comments from other viewers. I'd also like to encourage anyone else thinking of getting into shooting, just to go out and give it a go, it is lots of fun and I found it quite rewarding to see how you can group shots. You don't have to purchase a rifle like I did, you can rent one at a range or buy a cheaper (or better) rifle. And if you choose a 22LR to practice on like me, the ammo is only 10-15 cents a round if you use similar ammo to mine, and can actually get cheaper rounds if you wish.
As a final note, I did my safety course at SSAA Brisbane which was hosted by Warwick. Warwick was a great teacher and instructor. He made the course fun, interesting and I really enjoyed it. I cannot compare the safety course at SSAA to any others, but I doubt anyone would be disappointed if they did the course at SSAA with Warwick. (Im not a friend of Warwick's and the only time I have ever met him was at the safety course).
Sorry this comment was so long, but I hope it may inspire people who aren't currently licensed, to just go out and give it a try. The first time you go to a safety course or to a range, you will see that shooters aren't blood-thirsty nuts, they are nice helpful people with a common interest in the sport. I hope you like it as much as I did, and I am certainly looking forward to my next visit to the range.

Andrew Moroney hey mate, read (and know) your scope details and how much your clicks are set to move your point of aim at a given distance. Then get a large target that will help you see your fall of shot and help you adjust your zero.
Zero the scope and rifle yourself and your eye (don’t worry about someone else doing it for you) with 3 round groups for a while, save your ammo and frustration. As time goes on (in varying weather conditions) you will achieve a zero that suits your eye and position.
Don’t worry about fliers, they’re either you or the individual round for that individual shot, not the scope or rifle.
Try different brands of ammo as you go, you will work out what your particular rifle likes. Rimfire is notorious for liking a particular brand to an individual rifle.
Don’t go chasing a zero too much too, if it’s good it’s good. The brand and quality of ammo varies greatly, but even a batch of ammo can be poor. Weather (wind/rain/humidity and more) affect accuracy and don’t forget 22lr is a tiny, light round that will be affected by nearly everything, especially past 50 meters.
Good on you for getting out there and having a go. We need more shooters both here in QLD and Australia in general 👍🏻

@@Owl566 Thanks Daniel. I hop you, your family and friends are well with the current virus situation.
Speaking of virus restrictions and how Australia is stacking up against the rest of the world... perhaps this may give some faith to the politicians that most Australians are trustworthy and want to do the right thing... this extends to licensed firearms owners as well.

Definitely the best and most honest review I've seen on this rifle. I also own it, and can agree with everything you say. Mine particularly likes CCI Standard Velocity and Mini-Mag. Very handy, as they're some of the cheapest rounds available. It also performs impressively with Eley Edge, but that's in a slightly higher price bracket. Other expensive target ammo works just as well, but there seems little point in using it when the CCI performs almost as well, if not better than some at twice the price.. I've fitted the rifle with a Vortex Viper PST FFP 6-24x50mm scope on a high cantilever mount (slight overkill I know), but the combo works great. This may be no Anschutz accuracy-wise, but for the price, it sure is one heck of a lot of fun. Thanks once again for your many enlightening videos.

Amigo, the first box of Eley Club ammo was used to sight in my RPR Rimfire and it did .4” at 50yds consistently and some less. If you’re not getting 1/2” or better at 50, it’s you not the rifle. There are others that don’t do well. Green tag and Std CCI are OK each under 1” at 50. Tried Norma match, Federal GM, Eley Match, Target, Club and velocitor CCI. Mine limes thecCLUB and Match Eley best, green Tag next, the rest I shoot in pistols. Oh, I do have an EC Tuner but haven’t done any tuning yet. Just have it on the muzzle set to 0

Excellent honest review as usual - I own a couple of tactical 22’s in the form of a Ruger American target in a MDT chassis with a Timney trigger & a Keystone 22PT - both shoot super accurate using Eley Club ammo - I was hesitant in putting $$ down on a RPRR & your review confirms my intuition. Shame as I love my Rugers & own 2 tack driving RPR’s. Thanks again for your review👍

I noticed that subsonic ammo is more accurate when shooting 50-100 meter range. I think it has to do with supersonic bullet becoming subsonic at these distances, thus having some disturbances in the trajectory.
Supersonic are more accurate at distances less than 50 meters.

  • @longhairsviewoftheworld119
    @longhairsviewoftheworld119 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'll add another vote for the CCI Standard Velocity. It averages 1091FPS out of my RPRR, so it's faster than advertised but still subsonic, and here in the States it's only $25/500rnds. It rips bug holes @ 100yds with such regularity that it becomes boring. I've taken to shooting @ 250yds for a challenge.

The extended bolt throw is intended for people who own the precision center fire. So you don't build muscle memory on the short throw and screw up working the bolt on your center fire when switching between.

Bloody awesome review thanks mate. I just recently bought one of these babies, but have not put a round through it yet. I thought it would get a lot better groupings though. I have a Ruger charger fitted with a 10 bull barrel from Kidd Innovations in Texas, (gotta say it the best barrel I have EVER used also), and it gets groups of less than 3/4” at 90 yards (using 40grain Blazer rounds made bu CCI/Speer) so I really expected a lot more from this precision rifle. Only time and pricy will tell. Thanks again champion, and keep up the awesome work.

I use the CCI standard velocity ammo and it holds MOA or better at 100 yards. Fired with a can using those loads, and it is Hollywood quiet, hearing only the firing pin hitting the case and the impact of the bullet. Have used Federal Gold Match as well as Aguila match, Norma Tac22, and Ely loads. Some do a little better, but for the money, the standard velocity CCI's are the best. Have used Remington high velocity Thunderbolts and they fly all over the place.

Hi Ozzie,...so good to see you up and at 'em again .
I've been waiting to see a good review on this model Ruger, my choice is going to be , " do I buy this Ruger Precision 22, or do I wait for the Tikka T1X MTR?"
So now, I'd like to see what you think of the Tikka, whenever you can get your hands on one.
Here where I live in Canada, it looks like I have to wait until September before these Tikka's will be available. ( now there's a drag !)
My thought's are pretty well confirmed that the Ruger Precision, is more or less a 'jazzed up' American Rimfire. The only way to tell, for me, is going to be at my range.
Cheers Ozzie,..in the real sense of the greeting!

I can’t get anything to group better than what you have demonstrated here. I believe they all have the standard .22lr chamber with fancy bits added to tart them up. Good video. Was considering moving to rimfire. Im impresed how can I be getting better groups sith a good pcp airgun set to 42J with 38gr ammo. Im starting to see advantages shooting with it. Cheaper to shoot, can do it anywhere and more accurate. 50ygroups 5cent euro and 100y 50cent euro.

You need to try shooting some CCI stingers. I have this exact rifle with a Nikon bushmaster scope and at 50 yds with the stingers it shoots a lot better than what your showing in this review. I'm talking 15 shots in a ping pong ball or less.

Good to see you back doing what you do well Ozzie. To be honest though mate, I'm not sure there's much point in this rifle? These "precision" rifles are surely intended for long range shooting and the .22lr hardly falls into that genre and maybe it's not intended to be. A lot of people like the tactical look and I guess this is a cheap option for those who want something like that. It strikes me as just a fancy plinking rifle. I'm not likely to ever own anything like this but if I were I would be looking at something like a 6.5 Creedmoor or similar. I certainly wouldn't be spending my money on the Ruger given some of the disappointing results you got. Some might disagree with me but that's just my view. Cheers Ozzie and keep going.

Paul Ayres I think the intent with this is to emulate the feel of a larger rifle for training purposes while shooting cheaper .22 ammo. Ozzie discusses the ability to change the bolt throw to match a standard short action throw which fits with that idea.

You must fire more than one 10 round group to deside the ammo. One group tells you nothing because there is dyrt from the last ammo in the barrel. Fire 4 or 5 gorups of 10 shoot and you will se results ;-)

I've got much better results with a cheap Filipino .22 and Winchester rabbit ammo - and for that matter with a Ruger 10: 22 and Winchester rabbit ammo. Subsonic seems the way to go?

for something called a precision rifle its pants just enquired about buying one of these i think i will forget it . QUESTION.... why dont you test with sub sonic ammo ??? 100% of uk shooters will be using a moderator seems nuts you never use subs in rimfire tests since its almost the entire point of the calibre .

    • @14bonanza
      @14bonanza 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Philip Alpers ..not one of the gold plated models. A sporter...can’t recall the model number...but it shot well, just nowhere near as good as the Ruger does. And then only with Fiocchi Maxac...no longer available. All holes touching at 50 is more than good enough for anyone I know of. And with multiple brands. Best group was .125. At 100 yards, and a slightly breezy day, .71 inch groups. Been too windy to try 100 with dead calm. This is my favorite rifle. Only my Remington 700 in 270 Win, with handloads does better. .31inch groups with that one.
