I have been listening to Noah for years now and there is no artist that comes close that makes me feel the emotions that i do when i listen to him, once i figured out he grew up where im from, i knew he had some stories to tell, love him and his music to death and cant wait to see him live one day!
I discovered Noah in February and have been completely obsessed with his music ever since. He is all I have been listening to since then. Once every ten years or so, one of those life-defining favorite artists comes along and absolutely changes my world - Noah is the latest for me. Just absolutely incredible.
As I watch this, I'm remembering the night I was watching SNL in 1994 while I was in college and Counting Crows played this song and it absolutely blew my mind. Changed my world right on the spot. I will never forget that moment or that feeling. When you discover a new artist that change your world forever. There are before and after moments of hearing a song that changes your DNA, that performance of theirs on SNL playing Round Here was that moment for me. Just unforgettable.
Absolutely feel the same way. Noah is one of the few artists I can listen to anytime, anywhere and never get tired of him. He has brought so much quality music and still continues to deliver.
I never clicked so quickly, so glad you picked this one. I've followed Noah for years and have enjoyed his journey. I finally got to see him play live a couple of years ago in an old church in Bristol, England, and it was simply phenomenal. I flew from Ireland just for the gig and it was something I won't forget.
I’ve heard this song 1000s of times and it’s one of my most favorite - and I never thought I would say it, but Noah, with his raw energy and authenticity, lifted this to a whole new level. Michael, your reviews and insight of your personal experiences are so valuable, thanks for that!
One of the best covers ever - the best Counting Crows cover I've heard. Noah is a true trailblazer. Trapeze Swinger cover by Gregory Alan Isakov is one I wholeheartedly recommend too
I love this by Noah. I watch it regularly. I was thrilled when he announced it could be streamed. I’ve seen him live twice. I will follow him as long as I live. I’ve shared this video with many friends/family and everyone has loved it.
First saw the Crows in 94 at The Greek. Loved them then, love them now. Love them forever. And yes, the lyrics mean more and more, 30 years later. But man. What a cover! Bravo.
Absolutely! Noah’s done it. Better than original. Cried all the way through. Noah is a storyteller, he fills each lyric with a memory n allows that memory to take on a different meaning for anyone listening to his voice. It’s haunting and fkn beautiful. Love u Noah. 🖤
I truly believe that August and Everything After is the most unbelievably perfect work of art of the 90s. It may be the greatest I’ve ever heard. My musical tastes span from Hip-Hop, to “Jam Bands,” to Post-Rock, to Alt Country, to Jazz. But I truly believe the lyrics and delivery and musicality of this album is an all-timer.
Just replied.......this is in my top ten of all time. I put this on whenever I have a road trip and just let it play. The production of this album is masterful.

Yes, it is Counting Crows. And ever since this album came out, and to this day, I feel like more than one song from this album are perfect examples of poetry in music. The album is called August And Everything After, and it's one of my all time favorites.
I’ve heard this song hundreds of times and never fully paid attention to the lyrics. Phenomenal song. Phenomenal performance. Going to immediately listen to more of Noah. Keep doing what you do, Michael.
I always understood the lyrics. the line "she knows she more than a little misunderstood" hit me like a ton of bricks when this came out, but in my middle age, a lot of songs have come back to me with renewed understanding. Great cover, great video.❤
I was a music major in college, and I so appreciate, breaking down the quality and the intensity and the intelligence of the music. People that don’t love music don’t understand that it’s all encompassing. It’s all I can do to listen without totally falling apart especially on this song.
I F-ING LOVE YOU MP --- Always introducing me to just epic and beautiful renditions and artists. This song was the firt ever song we played in our band and I use to try and belt it out and then watched this 25 odd yers later and had tears falling down my face. F-Yeah Real Men Cry!

You are great guitar teacher!. I’ve learn so much from you! My one piece of feedback would be to say the name of the song at start of every video. Remember people are hearing this music for the first time. Keep up the great work!!
Its the emotion he puts into the song. Singers who can do this reach right into our hearts and sole. This song is an amazing story and with the right teller, it hits us in areas that not many songs can do. After 48 years of listening to music, I feel complete now..... thanks to Noah.
The song character Maria clearly means something to Noah. And 'she' very clearly meant something to Adam Duritz, because the character was recurring on the album 'August and Everything After' and elsewhere in his impressive catalog of songs. And it really doesn't matter if Maria is a 'real' person. Clearly she's real to Noah. Great reaction to a great performance of a great song by a great lyricist.
Not sure if you care, but in case someone does: Adam has said that Maria is an internal distaff counterpart that he, basically, created as a muse to talk through his lyrics with. Worth noting he's stated he has dissociative disorder, which, among other things, creates a mental (and emotional?) separation between experience and emotion. From what I've heard, the line "I walk through the air/between the rain/through myself/and back again" is a perfect description of the sensation. In that understanding, Maria as a idea to place that experience upon makes a lot of sense, IMO. It's probably difficult if not impossible to associate it with oneself as effectively in such a situation.
No dry eyes on this side of the keyboard, what a powerful performance. Like you, Michael I've heard this song countless times, but it takes that one artist, that one version to make it mean something more than what it was before to each one of us. As, always, your insight is always worth the time and it never fails to shed just a little more light on the creative mind. Thank you.
Michael you have turned me on to so many of those artists who live and thrive doing their own thing their way. They may not be popular as in mainstream, but that is fine by me, because when they sing those songs that are so personal and stab your heart and speak out loud and relate about all the demons we carry in our souls in a way no video can ever capture. What ever Noah's demons may be, he confronts them head on Thanks for what you do for the Travis Meadows and Noah Gundersons. Keep posting and I will keep watching. I appreciate you brother. 🙏
I loved this song for years, but this version is so awesome…gave me chills. You can tell this guy is singing from his soul and absolutely loves this song also.
I have loved that song for a long time by the Counting Crowes, I grew up with it as Micheal did but the way Noah presented it was very special. As a musician, I love to see the feelings different people get from music and that is something that is truly on display with this video. Very well done!
I started listening to Noah in 2008 when I was in middle school. One of my favorite memories was seeing him play live in a room of just 20 people. He was such a kind man. I'm 28 now and still listen to him every day
Dude, the performance was amazing by Noah and between his performance and your perspective on creating art that you shared in the first 3rd of the video, I felt very inspired. Started creating a painting.. I play guitar too… but this inspired visual art for me. Thanks for the inspiration 😎🤘
Hi Micheal recently found you ,love the song breakdown s, but your empathetic comments are better ,I love the openness you share and are not afraid to share.there is far more to music than words and cords ,some send a hand to grip our hearts and caress it ,which make our eyes leak . Keep if flowing .also you loved your pal doing mike and the mechanics ,may I suggest peter Gabriel’s “father and son “ the version with him using personnel video 8 films of him and his dad ,we are so privalidged he filmed and then used the films to punctuate the song ,so very, very lucky for the intamacey of the video ……watch and enjoy the moment .regards john ( London)
:) love your expression watching this.....I have to keep watching Noah over and over and over again singing this.....he is in it, breaking, crying, laughing it.....its just insane.
One of the best covers of just about any song is Lexington lab band... for Instance What Cha Gonna Do For Me. Chaka Kahn song. The list goes on and on.
I feel a bit like an idiot… I’ve been a guitargate lifetime member for a few years now and I watch all of your videos. They are always beautiful, moving re-learning experiences for me because I have nearly everything someone suggests already in my playlist. I really need to make a submission on the next performance I fall in love with because Noah killed me with this cover. Actually using the word “cover”’is rude because he feels every note, every lyric, every second because he’s loved it. Sold. Done. I first watched it a couple weeks after it came out and I notice and takeaway more every time; but, it’s so captivating I literally haven’t taken away the chords because it’s so powerful I get lost just listening, captivated. Thank you Michael for having flawless taste, your undying humility in admitting you’re open to anything and haven’t heard it all. You’re real to your core because it’s just who you are… my mother is 67 and a faithful subscriber of yours because she says she’s never seen anyone ready to music so wildly close to my own completely genuine, unabashed, raw emotion as you. The words flow out of your mouth because it’s truth and you can’t help it. Keep doing what you’re doing, my friend. We are so lucky to have you and this was a really beautiful breakdown and reaction. Thank you Noah for reminding me why I loved Counting Crows but more importantly making me fall in love with this song for the first time all over again.
And by the way... ‘WE’ was absolutely accurate. So well said, ‘can someone/anyone see through this crazy and just see me?. We don’t get to pick what people feel about what we make but I think when you find someone who feels something so akin to what you’re intending you feel seen and that’s the stuff
Carry the ghost is for me his best album … the later ones weren’t really my thing. But those songs like Halo or Heartbreaker. I will listen to those till the end of my days …

"There's a piece of Maria in every song I sing...."
A. Duritz
Thank you.
you can tell this guy lived this song for sure.. such passion
Tremendous observations and commentary.
What ever Noah's demons may be, he confronts them head on
Thanks for what you do for the Travis Meadows and Noah Gundersons.
Noah is a gem
Wow, performance and comments got me to the edge. Thanks
Totally awesome performance! I see it differently now. Thanks.....
I started listening to Noah in 2008 when I was in middle school. One of my favorite memories was seeing him play live in a room of just 20 people. He was such a kind man. I'm 28 now and still listen to him every day
I couldn't stop crying..Thank you
Dude, the performance was amazing by Noah and between his performance and your perspective on creating art that you shared in the first 3rd of the video, I felt very inspired. Started creating a painting.. I play guitar too… but this inspired visual art for me. Thanks for the inspiration 😎🤘
The emotion he brought is insane. Brilliant performance.
Love this song
Beautiful analysis and commentary. You are one of a kind, which is to say you are authentic and true. Cheers Michael, Taylor
Fantastic version.. Wow.
Wow. This performance gave me chills! I'm gonna have to listen to more Counting Crows!
:) love your expression watching this.....I have to keep watching Noah over and over and over again singing this.....he is in it, breaking, crying, laughing it.....its just insane.
I love Noah singing this song. I listen to it over and over! He's just amazing!
