I’m a drum teacher at a school that does group/band lessons and I just started my group lesson yesterday with this video and then we talked about what parts of this are repeatable parts of a process that we can all do when we’re learning a new song, and parts of the process that maybe we should wait to attempt until we’ve had like 20 years of session work under the belt lol, such as trying to play along with a track before having ever heard it. One of them asked how chad could tell so quickly that the song was in 3, so we got to talk about how to count and feel rhythm, someone asked how he could predict when parts were changing and we got to talk about typical song formats and how you can train your instinct to hear buildups, cues, and implications for part changes in the music. What an incredible gift chad gave the world by putting this on camera. Thanks for sharing your reactions with us too!

      1. Yes! Thank you for your service to future musicians. As a musician dad, I seek people like you for my talented daughter.
      2. All of what you said is dead on, but there some people who would answer, “I can just feel it”. My brother, my dad, and my daughter are like that. It’s a blessing and a curse because they don’t need to know why, which to me is important. For my daughter, the challenge is making it feel less like homework and more about the means to an end. For her, she’s got the shortcut already (rhythmically, tonally and harmonically), so all I do is tell her how it will be useful for her in the future. I digress.
      3. Michael thanks for the reaction video and conversation. Chad thank you for the music. @zwsh89 thank you for your work with kids and your comment.

I believe that the fact he is used to play improvised jams with John and Flea for multiple years has helped him with this challenge. On those jams he has to experiment different things on the spot by trying guessing where the other two are going. Improvisation is something not many drummers are used to do and he became a master on it.

Yeap! His mind/subconscious is doing magnitudes more work per instance than an average person without much energy loss.
It's essentially the same as being a freestyle rapper/battler or improv comedian/standup crowdworker. He basically has an entire encyclopedia in his mind of the foundational patterns of music, as well as pre-made responses which gives him the time and clarity to be creative and make tasty choices in his music.

I think a lot of the Drumeo videos I have seen, it's (a) they don't know the song, (b) they get one listen to the ENTIRE song (including the drum track), and then they give it a go. Chad is listening to a DRUM-FREE version of the song. They caption that down in their video but I think a lot of people miss that. It is one skill to listen to a "whole" track and be able to replicate nearly flawlessly what the original drummer did.
This is something else entirely. He gets about 30 seconds into a drum-free track, says "let's do this" and just stomps on the gas... and most of what he comes up with is arguably equal to if not better than the recorded drum track. That is an INSANE level of musicianship.

They aren’t. If you watch Drumeo regularly and know who they’ve had on it’s definitely not the first time they’ve seen high level drummers.

He both nails the feel of the original and somehow makes it even better. The sign of a true musician, not just a drummer. Music is all patterns, once you know enough patterns, you can fill in songs like that easily. He clearly knows so many songs it’s insane.

I watched this Drumeo video yesterday, and enjoyed the hell out of Chad just so joyfully, artfully beating the all-living crap out of this song, lol!!! I don't listen to 30STM a lot, but this particular song is admittedly on my playlist. It's just SO dramatic and emotionally over the freakin' top that it really is quite cathartic to occasionally blast in the car and holler along with, when the mood requires it. I even learned it on ukulele, lolol :) :) :)
Much as many people seem to love to hate on "Emo" music, and on Jared Leto (for various different reasons), he does have a respectable set of pipes on him that I've seen TH-camr vocal coaches admire, even when he's singing live.
I really enjoy the obvious, authentic delight and passion that you find in music, Michael. Keep up the good work sharing it with the rest of us!

You see the same skill with experienced dancers - the ability to change your style, dynamic, level of activity based on what's happening in the music. In dance, it's making your dance moves work with the music phrasing and structure. Same thing here; Chad is following the music exceedingly well, listening and creating something that follows what he hears.
