Actually Pete my friend I've got some good news for you, Spyderco has gone and switched their standard production steel from S30V to this same S45VN so if you were to go and buy a new para3 then you'll be getting the upgraded steel for $147 US 👍😊

@@michaell397 This is true, but it’s a tad bit tougher at a higher HRC. According to zknives, the edge retention is better than S35VN, but worse than S30V. Just like all steels, it’s an upgrade in some aspects and a downgrade in some aspects. I’d honestly take a finer microstructure with good toughness at 60-62 HRC over a minute decrease in controlled edge retention testing.
It’s hard to argue that S45VN is an absolute upgrade over S30V, but it comes down to what you’re looking for in a knife.
Also wanna say that S30V is one of the best steels around despite its age. Especially since companies like Spyderco have basically perfected the HT.

Buck seems to have made a $50 knife and put a premium steel on it to charge a premium.
Exactly what they did. They pulled a crkt.
Why not? It's what they did with the Vantage. I bought a cheap 420 Vantage for a friend, and an S30v for myself, his had a better, cleaner, frame and lockup. Even the handle scales were the same, with milled out recesses on the "premium" model for carbon fibre inserts, rather than nicer scales on the whole. I would not be in a hurry to buy a "premium" knife from Buck again, the only premium is the mark-up.
It is basically a Ganzo, but without the attention to fit and finish the Chinese pay to fit and finish these days.
@@michealmorris3766 buck seems to think that premium only means premium blade steel 😂. I'm sure that they know that the steel isn't super expensive, and that people pay for quality and design too.
Ever the innovators, Buck has come to the party with a Hinderer-esque collection of features, but with a STEEL frame ==> a 4.9 oz knife with a 3.375" blade (1.45 oz/inch) at $180 US. Pete is spot on... that thick edge sacrifices some of the attainable slicing performance of S45VN with a good Bos heat treat. Will appeal to ... uh ... current fans of Buck knives?? Competition and choice at this price point is immense. What Buck has going for them is their huge distribution network ... from WalMart to Sporting Goods stores (Cabela's, Bass Pro, Dick's, Academy) to Mom & Pop gun/hunting supply stores. However, $180 is a tough sell in that network.

I just do not understand that an almost 200$ knife would have stainless steel handle. Hell, even aluminum would be better. There are dozens of knives in this price range with titanium.
Ontario even does titanium handles on one of their $50 knives. Can't be that expensive. But yeah stainless steel is pretty bad lol

Agree with your point. Just wanted to pick some nits and note that Aluminum would be an awful material for a frame lock. Even if you put in a steel insert for the lock face, the aluminum would fatigue over time as the lock was opened and closed
@@Phaminator525 Ontario makes $50 titanium framelocks because they’re made in China. That factory’s ethics are questionable at best. A harsh reality the knife community is not willing to admit or change, evident because we vote with our dollar.

I get a strong sense of "not mad, just disappointed". I'm convinced that companies like Buck and Gerber are really just not interested in our hobbyist side of the market at all.
You're right, they're absolutely not. This knife is made for them to profit off their name with people shopping at a fishing shop or camping shop. Those people see the Buck name and the price tag and automatically assume this must be the pinnacle of knife design and spontaneously decide to treat themselves to this apparently high quality knife. They buy it and then earn the praises of their fishing buddies. And if one of those people were to Google S45VN for a second, they'd immediately get the reassurance that this knife actually backs up the price by using the latest iteration of the most well known premium steel family in the world. Those companies know they can't compete with Civivi and other overseas powerhouses when it comes to price and most times even functionality, so the only market segment they're left with is kinda ripping off casual buyers.
I have had warranty issues with buck… actually about 6 times. I have a buck rush… the spring broke … sent it back… and when it came back it was terrible with actions and way off center. So had to pay and send it again. I bought a Buck 55 and the scale kept separating on me and I could get paper under the scale. I had it happen twice so they swapped it with an inertia at my request. The first one came in and was rubbing on the liner and because of that the action was garbage. Sent it back in and they sent me one that was so over sharpened the choil was gone… so I called again… and finally got a good one.

I sent Buck a 50 year old Buck 110 with a damaged spine and it came back looking like a new knife. No charges. And they put a nice edge on it.
I bought my ZT 452 CF for about $190 USD and it one of my grail knives still to this day!

Apart from the blade thickness issue, I can't beleive they are charging $180 for a steel frame lock. That's $40 knife territory.
With this S45VN and the Boss HT if they would sell this for $130 it would be a home run. Made in the USA costs big money.

8:55 - Just for the sake of the conversation, whether or not that shoulder is a bad thing depends alot on what you use the knife for and preference. For instance, in alot of high end chef knives, having a little bit of shoulder there is desirable because when you cut alot of things that tend to stick to the blade, that shoulder kinda flips off the cut pieces to the side so they dont climb up the blade and pile over as much. But again, at the expense of slicing performance, it does make it chop more than it slices and usually with an audible clack on the chopping board. Sadly theres no free lunch in physics.
I’ve bought 3 buck knives, one from the custom shop, within the last 2 years. The quality was nothing short of disappointing. Centering we’re all off. The grind on the secondary bevel were inconsistent and the actions were terrible. I was raised hunting with buck knives and will never be purchasing more.
Same here, I was especially disappointed because it was a USA made knife. The grind on my Vantage Pro was visibly asymmetric, totally off center brushing against the liner, and edges on the thumbhole, liner lock and flipper tab very sharp and uncomfortable. Also pin construction. I fixed all the flaws myself but didn't expect to have to do that on a USA made knife

The explanation of behind the edge thickness was really good. I hear a lot of comments about the behind the edge thickness being dictated by the height of the blade, but it actually has to do with how steep the company does the grind.

Unfortunately I have had the same experience with Buck recently. I purchased a Limited Edition BOS automatic in S35VN and the edge was horrible. Looks like it was ground on a 20 grit wobble wheel. And over $200 USD spent. Many better knives for same price or less. Thanks for the video!! Cheers from Texas

Actually, my PM2 is in S45, and it's phenomenal. I got an employee discount on it, and for a first try of the steel it's: easy to sharpen, takes an attractive edge quickly, tough enough for my needs and doesn't shy away from a lot of cardboard. Great review of a stinky knife sir!
How do think it compares to S35 or M390?
Hey Pete, Spyderco has CQI'ed the Para Military 2 blade steel to S45VN. I finally decided to get one and it is the upgraded steel.

If you want a modern Buck my choice is the 110+ & 112+ slim carry. Unlined micarta scales, S-30v blades, & a pocket clip. Bucks S-30v seems to hold a edge better than any of my Benchmades. Oh, and priced sub one hundred dollars in the US.

Totally agree, the marksman was their best modern offering. If they brought it back with s45vn they would make a lot of people happy.
100%. I went to buy a replacement for mine and was devastated to find it's been discontinued. It's my favorite knife design by far.
It was probably discontinued for financial reasons. There are a ton of finicky parts that go into it, and it was likely being pushed out of it's natural price bracket over time. Or maybe the Hawks got a percent of the income and Buck didn't like it anymore
@@Acre00 Buck have been periodically putting out marksmans as there buck of the month knife, last one in D2 and the price was decent and it was this year, infact it was cheaper than a fancy 110 by a good margin. They have done two in s35vn, g10 handle varient for SK blades, so they still make them . Appears buck do not know what we want ha.

I bought one of the newer model 112's (little brother of the 110) mine has micarta handles s35vn steel, thumb studs and a pocket clip. Over the course of a year it has really performed well and essentially replaced my older spyderco Centofante3. Uncle Randy might find these newer premium 110 and 112's to be a real improvement and in the 100 usd range to boot.
If you take a look at BHQ, you’ll see that the base steel on the para 3 and pm2 is now S45VN and the price is the exact same as the S30V versions. So, yeah, that’s a thing.

Thick behind the edge is because Uncle Randy no doubt had a hand in designing this new Buck knife even though he despised it & gave it a bad review. He insisted on a thick, robust blade that would last a life time. Thank your Uncle Randy for this non-slicey blade. He would want something bomb proof.
*Edit: The white gunk is most likely white lithium grease. A good lubricant but a little too heavy for a folding knife. Also, it attracts all sorts of debris. Appreciated your non-biased review.
I have had to send several Bucks back because of poor workmanship over the last several years and there is no excuse for it, because their quality control shouldn't allow them to leave the factory. I personally am about to give up on them. I bought my first Buck 112 back in 1982 in the Navy and still have that knife and it has been a great knife so I have been a big fan for a long time but there is definitely a decay in workmanship and many times it's the blade edge grinding. I have had great experiences with the knives done by the custom shop though. They have all been beautifully done. The problem is it isn't across the board and many times you get a great knife but way too many times I have gotten ridiculously poor made knives and I send them right back. At least they don't give me grief and go ahead and refund the payment without arguing about it. It comes down to their worforce and I am sure Buck is suffering from the same problem many American companies suffer from and that is an increasingly poor work ethic among the up and coming generations. I said it and I'm not sorry either. It's the truth. It's just sad.
Grabbed a Buck Paradigm at a big discount (luckily) and the qc is terrible. A knife that sells for $179 and the G10 is pot marked along the back spacer and the blade is off centered (tried fixing it to no avail).
I literally just won this knife and now I think I might sell it haha that ending was solid LOL nice video and thanks for a great input
I like that new Buck, it's a nice medium between my larger full tang, and edc Civivi pocket. Looks really good too! Just not worth the money, price point is about 30% off imo.

13:00 I got a buck vantage force, where the stand-off chips the blade.
broke the tip on my old 110, was a hand me down from my father when he passed away. I ended up reshaping it, and creating a horrible job of the new edge :( I wish I'd left it alone now, but it does work, looks quite good considering, and since it has sentimental value to me, I will eventually have a professional look at it.

Yeah, Buck needs to do a revamp of sorts. Not much they do is of any interest to anyone anymore despite the few classics that are sold at your local Walmart. A SS frame lock is a joke in 2021 😂
I had an aluminum marksman that was great. Ended up buying a S35VN /G-10 version that absolutely sucked. It is so thick behind the edge compared to the aluminum version. They do a great hollow grind, not sure why they don’t use it more.
That's pretty shocking when you consider the quality other brands provide for that amount of money. Caribbean on the way to me tomorrow, I'll enjoy that.

Hinderer started this design, zero tolerance just made it more mainstream and a fun tid bit Chris reeves designed the framelock. Yeah I didn't expect it to be good, I'm sure they just looked at what's on the market and said we can do that too! I'm biased though I never cared for any buck knives. Also the fact they cheaped it out and then competitively priced it out to knives like zero tolerance is kinda insulting.
From what I understand the handle is stainless steel because Buck doesnt have the equipment yet to work with titanium.
Not sure why they didnt make it aluminum, like the Marksman or Spitfire, etc.
It works! Buck to the rescue 😎me no like the price tag though, so I will take a pass.

Pete I know you said you had shoulder issues from cutting so much rope. I know how you love subscriber suggestions (sorry) learn to use your left hand to cut, give your right side a break. as a waiter and construction worker I had to force myself to do so to keep back in good shape.
Now for the pain issues.
(Surfer here) I use *Arnica Gel* for when my joints muscles and tendons get sore hurt are fuxed. It is a non addictive miracle ointment, works on most injuries, not for open wounds though, stings like a m'fer 😬

Thanks for the review. I was considering buying this knife and think I'll pass now. That blade thickness creating a harsh shoulder close to the edge is a fundamental design flaw.

The best Buck I own is a 112 custom. I almost think you need to get a custom Buck for it to be any kind of decent, and the 112 actually feels small and light enough to carry in my pocket.
They should have put a hollow grind on it ( like the 110😄), but on the wonky primary grind i agree it should not happen.
But that say'd it happens with other brands too, i own a cf S90v Spyderco shaman(a much more expensive knife) wich also has a wonky primary edge bevel.
Pete, this is the first 5ime I've seen you actually critique a knife you were reviewing. I'm a big Buck fan and I agree with your criticisms of this blade. It would be interesting 8f you found another example in a store so you could compare grinds. I wonder if the entire run is poorly executed or if you just got a wonky one.
As a side note, I agree with Uncle Randy. I love the lightness and drop point on my Buck 286 Bantam but the first thing I did to it was to remove the annoying pocket clip and put it in a Buck 110 nylon sheath. At just under 4 ounces (including sheath) it is now an absolute joy to carry.
I generally buy knives I like and research well, I wasnt suprised this one was a bit wonky but it did still bum me out for the cash
I got one when they were first released and sent it back the next day. The grind was horrible. The edge was literally wavy. I know that it can be sharpened out but for $180 I don't think I should have to do this. Also the action was terrible. Buck has really gone down hill over the past ten years.
I know the buck has Alot of steel to remove to be a super slicy blade but can be done with good stones. It would be a painful job but definitely possible. 👍

spyderco para 3 is s45vn. it would be interesting if u compared the s45vn straight edge vs fully serrated.
Push the geometry to 13 degrees per side and go full scandi and you have yourself a nice whittler. I'd be interested to see how the S45 holds up.
It would hold up ok I guess, looking at the formula it should be a little less tough than 35vn, 35vn was a 12 lbs C notch test and 45vn got an 11lbs. The whole deal from what I understand is that crucible wanted to improve corrosion resistancewithout sacrificing any edge holding and toughness etc…

Those A3 sheets made me think you're shrinking at an alarming rate. Shame about the uneven grind you got out of the box.
Forget what it's called but I've used that white lubricant when replacing a hinge on my car door.

I never buy buck knives for the simple fact that it’s a roll of the dice whether or not you’ll get a well done blade and I don’t mean knife but just the actual blade aka the most important part of a knife. It boggles my mind that a company who’s been making knives for longer than most companies has such a difficult time with their grinds on every part of the blade.
As time goes on I have to imagine that there’s fewer and fewer uncle Randy’s out there blindly buying a buck knife over and over just because it’s a buck.

Have never owned a Buck or understood the ‘mystique’ of the brand. In my eyes they do one thing reasonably well and that’s it. For the money you paid, a dud grind and a pivot full of sunscreen is inexcusable.

Lots of competition at that price point
Something about the basic design of this knife that stood out is the size of the guard and flipper. They limit the usability of the blade. The distance between the tip of the flipper and/or guard limits the length of usable blade. This is especially important with small knives like this. The Spyderco is also better designed in this regard.
Even some of their new 7CR knives are better designed and ground. They need to get it together.
Being born and raised in Idaho...it kinda sad to see the once iconic brand being left behind.
Almost like Buck has lost their passion...and their just looking for ways to make a Buck...no pun intended.
It’s truly sad to see. As much as I love my 110 buck has been stuck in the past for a while. They just sit back as the other knife company’s evolve. With that said I’ll always have my 110 which buck will hopefully always make.
Hopefully the next generation of the Buck Family will again have that creative spark...lots of good memories with Buck knives...especially the 110.

Lately, it seems like Buck is sacrificing quality for innovation. The Paradigm Shift and Onset being good examples. I’m glad the heat treat was good. My S30V Bucks have terrible edge retention.
This video makes me feel a lot better about my first TwoSun knife it also has an offset main edge grind but I at least didn’t pay $180.00 for it (it was $117.00), it’s also not a stainless steel framelock instead it has a titanium integral handle with slotted carbon fiber inlay and a modified sheepsfoot blade in m390.
Yeah and how is that warranty? Oh wait it doesn't exist😆

That differs a lot, sometimes they replace the knife or parts but that’s not always possible because they never keep knives in production and they sell all of them, other times they just refund the money and with smaller defects they pay back part of the money.
It is kinda hard to communicate with the guys because they have no hired customer support so you have to communicate with one of the two owners and they don’t communicate in English too well.
I have one knife that has a little deviation on the bevels of the handle and the owner payed back $20 on a $89 knife (it’s just a very small deviation that almost disappears when I put on my glasses).
The white grease is probably lithium grease or a marine style
So it appears to me they packed that pivot with white lithium grease, which is a real head scratcher to me. I bought this knife as soon as it came out and it was such a huge disappointment especially at that price point. It was just poorly finished with sharp edges everywhere, it looked rough the lock stick was horrendous not to mention mine was ground badly as well. Buck's factory is pretty much stuck in 1950s/60's manufacturing processes I'm not sure they can make a decent modern flipper with any consistency because this isn't the first one from them that I've had that was a bust however it will be the last, I wash my hands of them.
Its Teflon grease. I use it in some of my knives and a few bearing knives too. Its best in a folder with washers. Its better at keeping gunk out and not attracting crap unlike what peter said in his review. Liquid oils are magnets to dust and debree. With any newly manufactured knife it will have lots of gunk in it. So that's likely why it was dirty and gunked from factory.

It looks like a poor man's Kizer Gemini - the Para/PM2 in S45VN over this any day - and I was hoping Buck would have something nice as their break out modern folder
