    I absolutely admire your modification efforts, it amazes me that Buck forgot to make this knife slicey out of the box. It’s good to see Buck producing newer designs, but don’t leave behind basic Buck concepts like thinner blade stock, slicey low angle grinds, while still remaining a cut sturdy tool for expected applications.

    Well done. You now have a functional working knife for your tasks around home. Don't leave it laying around; Uncle Randy might just pick it up & decide it's good enough to keep. You could always send it back to Buck Knives so they can copy your revisions/improvements & sell a better a knife in the future. Just make sure you get the percentage of royalties sorted out first.

    Bloody good job mate! Why not finish it off with a micro sharpening choil at the tang. Just a few minutes with maybe a diamond file / round. Thanks for sharing.

    • @jameshealy4594
      @jameshealy4594 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sharpening choils aren't always necessary or beneficial IMO. I always seem to get loose material caught in them, one of the reasons I like Spydercos is the lack of them on most blades. I find it relatively easy to keep the edge straight all the way to the plunge but I have a fair bit of sharpening experience so YMMV. Just putting it out there that it's not necessarily a universal upgrade.

    • @haywoodf
      @haywoodf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jameshealy4594 I agree with you. To put in context, my experience with say a CRK Sebenza style sharpening choil is it's on the large side and sometimes interrupts use. But, something like a Lionsteel SR2 or TRE which have much smaller choils, don't jag in use and allow me to more conveniently keep the edge sharpened evenly at the root/plunge. Certainly MMV.

    Remember back when the Buck Micarta came out and you was into thick blades that were durable and wouldn't break. I just watched it and caught your comment. I can't remember the name of the video, but I thought it was a bit humorous how overtime we learn this and that and our views change. I bought the Buck Paradigm and after watching your video on the benefits on slim blades with good edge retention it had me wishing I would have been more patient and picked out a knife with a slimmer blade, In any case I lost the receipt and am now stuck with the knife, but I don't think it is a total loss as all though it may not cut as good as a slim blade it is as you felt early in your knife career valuable as a sturdy knife that can hold a edge and can be sharpened to do most jobs I will need it for but I will not have the luxury of having a supper slicy knife of which I could quarter a deer by using only the weight of the knife as all the force needed to cut away the meat. I am new to the knife hobby and enjoy your shares and see you as one of the more logical Knife gurus to follow, Thanks.

    Bet you read Larrin Thomas' article titled, "Does Sharpening with a Grinder Ruin Your Edge?" I noticed you kept the edge away from that Work Sharp grinder's belt. Without fail knives sharpened on a dry belt including Work Sharp did not make as many cuts as a hand sharpened knife did even with an 'as measured' better sharpness. Most factory edges failed too because the final edge is ground without coolant.
    It is why I converted my old Delta 1x42 belt grinder to wet grinding. The edge is so thin you re-temper the steel no matter how fast you go down to a thousandth of an inch or more. I bought an American made S30V knife and when I went to sharpen it by hand it felt soft. I ran it across my diamond hone until it felt harder, about 10 passes both sides. Then it felt like I was polishing glass on my ceramic stone. I sometimes get D2 that way as well.

    420 cuts with factory edge to 600 with convex edge?! Your reprofiling must have removed some burnt edge steel. Curious what that Buck heat treated S45VN would do now with your standard KME 17° polished edge.

    • @marrenmiller

      The thinner behind the edge, the more rope cuts it does. Sure burnt edge may have been removed. But rope cut testing has to be shown with context. Its why cardboard cut testing should be used as well as it relies less on bte thickness. Puts things more into perspective. not really like he needs defending but he has had the tormec for years and years, also realistically s45 is just s35 with bumped performance to compete with m390, 20cv

    • @tacticalcenter8658
      @tacticalcenter8658 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reaper117nobody7 unfortunately s45vn cannot keep up with m390 class steels when m390 is heat treated well (only a handful heat treat m390 well). The results your seeing are due to reduced behind the edge thickness and removing the burnt factory edge. S45vn still is a budget class steel. And m390 is being heat treated poorly in most mass manufacturing brands.
      The results need context. The reason why you generally see higher numbers in rope cutting is generally due to thinner edges. The thinner the edge and behind the edge thickness, the higher the score. So the results of rope cut testing is hard to corelate without context between the different examples.
      With cardboard cutting, edge angle matters, but behind the edge thickness matters less (there are exceptions as with any rule). What I think I'm trying to say is, you can always improve your edge retention by edge angle. But also with heat treatment. And different brands provide a better heat treatment allowing more edge retention without changing the angle too much. For example 420hc vs 420hc with buck's BOS heat treatment.
      You gain more edge retention with a proper heat treatment with same behind the edge and edge angle knives. Peter's results with s45vn improved because of the geometry and perhaps also removing the burnt edge. With that said the belts and motorized sanding could have heated the blade and tempered it slightly, but probably not as they were low rpm. I enjoy data, and peter does a great job at providing it. Check out some of the cardboard cut testing and get more context with Pete's results. Outpost76 also did an s45vn cut test 2 days ago, worth checking out and take in more context.
      S45vn is better than its predecessors. But is still a bit far from what m390 class steels is capable with good heat treatment and geometry.
      And I shouldn't say budget class. But a step out of budget class. I'm sure some custom makers will provide some exceptions at a higher cost.

    Real shame it comes like this, the only satisfactory way to do this is grinding the full height of the blade. You can be a masochist and use a extremely low grit stone (sub 100 grit) or take the risk with a belt sander.

    I have a Chi-com Brother fixed blade I gave exactly such an edge and it's evil now. I did it all using stones like Grampaw Bucky would

    Freaking sad seeing what's going on in your country mate ..the stuff I've seen is horrible. Ya won't find it on screwtube , they delete everything, my comments seldom post anymore so 🤷
    If this does post ..I'm praying for Aussies and my own country . ..something is really off with these mandates its not normal. Big stories are breaking here , the news won't share it but it will get out eventually.
    I thought maybe it would stop but dang bro it's way worse esp with summer coming .

    I’m sorry but no one should have to regrind a $180 knife. Buck should be embarrassed and contact you to make it right

      Yeah, they should contact all of the thousand or so customers who bought the knife and make it right, but they won’t. They made this particular model the way it is.
