  • S45VN edge retention testing. What does this newer steel offer on this Spyderco Para 3? I will be able to keep this loaner longer and get a feel for how this steel does in use. Then I'll be able to give a solid comparison on how it is against S30V and S35VN.

    Thanks . It is always interesting to watching your videos. I have PM2 Sprint Run in S45 and i am very satisfied. Like you said its very easy to sharpen and takes laser sharp edge. It seams that S45vn has very fine microstructure. It’s great news that you can make HRC testing.

    My S45vn para 3 is in my pocket today, I can attest that it takes a bester edge than S30v and strops better than S30v. It is one of the only steels I have gotten to hair whittling, and it sharpens for me like 154cm, and I’d bet that it is at least 61 hrc

      I agree with you on that. I've always loved the Spyderco Chaparrals and CTS-XHP has always been a steel that I enjoy. I think it's underrated and doesn't get the credit it deserves. But, then again, there are so many great steels nowadays and the prices are excellent. 10 years ago if you told me that decent name brand knives with CTS-XHP, nitro-v, s35vn (45vn didn't even exist back then hahaha), 4v, m390, 20cv, etc, etc would be available for less than $100 I would've laughed in your face. Now we have D2, cpm154 (which is a steel I still love), etc knives selling for under $40 is mind-blowing to me 🤯. I love how much better and cheaper steel keeps getting. I haven't tried out MagnaCut yet, but I'm excited to test it out soon. I have been very impressed with the Vanax on my Quiet Carry Waypoint.

    • @holdernewtshesrearin5471
      @holdernewtshesrearin5471 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. CTS-XHP is just one of those steels that I would be perfectly happy with on any of my knives. Great stuff!
      It's a shame the market tends to always move to the new. XHP is hard to find these days even though truth be known it's equal to or superior to many of its more popular contemporaries.

      S45VN is going to be more wear resistant but have equal corrosion resistance to S30V and be close in toughness. If S30V last a good amount of time for you and you are happy how it performs then just keep with it. I'm going to touch on things like this in a video very soon.

    • @nonammmmme
      @nonammmmme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought S45Vn has higher corrosion resistance but less in wear resistantce? Do you find it to be harder to sharpen S45VN?

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@nonammmmme I'll back it up a little. Going from known hardness tests on Spyderco S30V and S45VN, the S30V is usually 59 to 61 and the S45VN was 61.4. Since we know what hardness they usually run these are the take aways. Since the S30V is softer it will have less wear resistance, toughness with a 1 to 1.5 rc hardness spread is going to be about the same. For corrosion resistance the heat treat done plays a part and can have an effect. It's not just a cut and dry that X is better for wear resistance or corrosion resistance. I'll cover it much deeper in a video.

They are nowhere near budget steel for me, and I'm not interested in paying over $300 for a pocket knife. Not trying to argue or disrespect, but I don't think most people see it that way. For most people a budget knife is less than $100.
      Again, to each their own. I guess if all you use is magnacut or maxemet then maybe s45vn does seem budget to you, but most people are on the other side of the situation where s45vn is an expensive step up for them

      @@chimchu3232 its not to each their own. Look at the data. 14c28n is a budget steel. Its cheap and plentiful and easy to heat treat. Its on lots of China knives in knives around $50-60. Now compare that to s45vn which has a similar edge retention. You may gain some performance but pay much more.
      The whole industry is stupid. They don't account for performance and they don't care much about heat treatment, they care about how many knives they can make and sell through marketing.
