John Maxwell is the most widely recognized expert in the field of leadership. But his accomplishments did not come easy, and he experienced plenty of setbacks and failures along the way. On this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, John C. Maxwell explains why everyone has to go through adversity, and shows the best way to learn the most you can from experience. Specifically, he details the precise questions you should ask other leaders, describes the methods he uses to reflect on both hardships and successes, and explains exactly how you should go about having hard conversations with your peers and teammates.

This mans impact is bigger than what he carries himself as. He's so humble. You don't actually know how influential this man is until you realise how his literature is literally part of the bedrock of leadership and Christian devotionals and Study Bibles. Growing up I didnt even know the person existed, I always thought John Maxwell was a foundation/name of a organisation and now as an adult to see it's a real person is shocking. I'm sure eveyone has at least one John Maxwell book, devotion, study Bible or literature of his in their home.

    "Add value"
    "Encourage others to add value"
"Do-overs don't encourage you to learn from your life mistakes"
"Leaders should talk about their weaknesses. Everyone knows about them anyway"
And of course...Claude. How could you not love Claude?
So many gems. I couldn't possibly write them all down here. One of my favorite parts of the interview was in the beginning. John and Tom talked about how John introduced himself to each and every one of Tom's staff members. That story illustrated one out of a million reasons why John Maxwell has had the influence he's had in the worlds of leadership, business, and personal development.
Definitely one of my favorite Impact Theory interviews ever. Thanks, Tom!

I was in an entry level position at my last employer. I was taking the job I had for granted. I thought I had to be In a manger role to make a difference. It wasn’t until I got to the employer I am with now, where I made a promise to myself to give encouragement to one employee, and one customer each day. I have been doing just that. Since I’ve started that, my managers have seen the change in me, and they asked what else they could do for me to make my job easier. And I said, “I want to be able to help my peers be the best they can be, while still be the best I can be. So I’m planning on giving a training class on passion, and why it’s important to be an example of hope for others. I love when the guest said, “in the middle of that five years, I asked myself, when will I get there to, how far will I go.” Thank you for this video!

This is the best of Tom on the receiving side (interviewer) I’ve come across. Great leading questions, letting John (guest) fill the content. I have developed a hobby of watching this podcast & taking notes, I’m definitely taking notes of both participants 🙌

"The lessons I learned out of my failures probably are a lot more valuable than if I had just made a successful decision and moved on. Who I am today is based upon not having do-overs and learning out of my adversity and difficulty and struggles and darkness." What a powerful quote from a CEO John Maxwell was talking to.

Tom, this was the first of your programs I've watch. You ask John about what questions he ask, but then I was thinking how good questions you ask in this interview. You make John tell more and go deeper so we understand more about what he is saying. Well done.

I never saw myself as a LEADER, until recently when someone explained the difference between a MANAGER, and a LEADER !!!!!!!!
A MANAGER, manages a problem, whereas a LEADER finds the solution, that was a lightbulb moment for me.
This changed my perspective on life completely 💯
Having spent years studying and practicing WHOLE HEALTH, and discovering how simple is really is, only most people are confused about this simple area in their life.
Now I see myself as a LEADER who is helping to bring SOLUTIONS into peoples everyday lives.
Building people up has to be the most rewarding experience EVER. ❤️

Power of connection - value people. Everyone is a factor of success.
    Liability/asset.
    Everything rises/falls on leadership.
Leaders can be made. Leadership is a skill, it CAN be developed.
Sometimes you win sometimes you learn.
How long could it take? Or How far could I go?
Growth~ allows you to expand yourself. How much you know is a potential on how much you could share.
Influence~ add value to people to increase your influence to people.
Think of ways to value people
    Encourage others to value people
    Be consistent.
Dont be afraid to talk about loses and failures.
Before you lead people, you need to find them. Find out who they are and build relationship. Understand on how to lead an individual instead of doing it collectively.
Lead the people with their best interest in mind.
You cant grow yourself if you dont know yourself. I am not afraid to be critisized.

Evaluating experiences. I have to pause and look back and learn from it. Experiencing something does not necessary mean you learn from it. Use it to improve your life.
I see this This interview is my invitation to the leadership table. I will use this to ask questions. Give my inputs. I care thats why im here.
Give a path for improvement. Am I willing to do it? Yes.

Loved this conversation! I had so many lightbulb moments listening to it. Especially the parts where Maxwell explains that growth doesn’t happen automatically-rather, aging happens automatically. Unfortunately I know a few people who are older but have not worked on themselves. It’s not a good look and I wish they’d go to some serious therapy and counseling. I also love what Maxwell said about the importance of working yourself out of a job and training others!
