    Thank you for posting a time-corrected version of this. Only w/ perfect synchronicity can we see the perfect incision of his pulse, and how CK would move 'ahead of the beat' from time to time. It allowed room for rubato of every sort, and music-making of a sort hardly ever seen anywhere. This was the first concert I ever saw him conduct. It changed forever my notion of what great conductors could do. I suspect it was the same for thousands of others.

    The greatest Conductor of all time by a long way.

      There’s no “greatest conductor of all time”, period. There have been, and there will be, precious Great Conductors. Kleiber was definitely one of them but he wasn’t “better” than Fürtwangler, Mahler, Mitropoulos, Walter, etc etc

    Carlos Kleiber was a phenomenon. He is so beautiful to watch. Like no other conductor, with his expressions and gestures he literally becomes the music. I have his legendary DG recording of Beethoven's 5th and 7th. They are both as if you are hearing the works for the first time.

    Rerhaps Carlos contagious friendliness is because his youth was in Buenos Aires. The best interpretation of the 4th of Beethoven

    CK was very special. He enjoyed gardening more than conducting, and performed less than 100 concerts during his whole career. His father Erich Kleiber was a genius too.

    Honestly, this is one of the most impressive and impeccable orchestral performances I've ever seen. Music just lives with Kleiber. And of course the Concertgebouw is absolutely fantastic.

    One of the orchestra members once told me this anecdote: "We never played Beethoven with double woodwinds in those days, that was already deemed old-fashioned. But when Kleiber came to conduct us, everybody wanted to be there. So we just doubled again. When Mariss Jansons, our chief conductor in a later period, saw our Beethoven-Kleiber video, he asked: "but why the double winds?" And we answered: "Because...Kleiber!" And he understood"
    If you watch Beethoven's 7th, from later that night, you'll notice that the woodwind principals have switched. They 'divided the loot', so to speak ("You do the 4th, I do the 7th")

      Great anecdote, Thank you! I know that Jansons held Kleiber in very high esteem. Jansons said he wrote to CK, and explained that his father played under Erich Kleiber's baton. They they met in 2003 after a rehearsal when he was chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony, and spoke for several hours about many topics. Jansons was reportedly very happy and in awe about the encounter

      Yes, Kleiber insisted on split bowing with the orchestras he worked with, the idea being to get a more seamless legato.

    ESSA SINFONIA No. 4 DE BEETHOVEN, FICA MAIS INEXPRESSIVA AINDA, QUANDO É INTERPRETADA POR UM MAESTRO PEDANTE, GROSSEIRO E DE PÉSSIOMO RELACIONAMENTO COM OS MÚSICOS DA ORQUESTRA EM QUE ELE ESTÁ REGENDO. CARLOS KLEIBER, SUBTRAI MUITO MAIS, O VALOR DA OBRA QUE INFELIZMENTE ELE REGE. ELE NÃO TINHA EMPATIA COM AS OBRAS QUE ELE REGIA. OS MÚSICOS QUE ESTIVESSEM SOB SUA REGÊNCIA NUNCA ESTAVAM À VONTADE, PORQUE ELE TOLHIA A INDIVIDUALIDADE DE CADA UM COM SEU JEITO TIRÂNICO E MAU HUMORADO.

    The members of the orchestra don't even look at him: why should they? He doesn't do anything. He just performs this little ballet on the podium occasionally waving his arms. What his few gestures communicate to the players is anyone's guess. This guy was so over rated.

    • @mochkis2

    Why is Carlos loosing his time to conduct these frozen protestants ?
    For God's sake, stay in München or in Wien !!!
    (same thing with Bernstein trying to play Mahler in Wien, with an antisemitic and hostile orchestra)

    • @MrTann2010
      @MrTann2010 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Well, he never conducted the Concertgebouw again after this. Kleiber considered the orchestra “stolid and uninterested.” He didn’t like the resistance he got from several of the members even though most liked him.
