Well there are a lot of average or below average people. I don't think people should be ashamed of being below average because it isn't their fault. But unless you've had an official IQ test you don't know. More intelligent people apparently have more doubts about their intelligence, I've heard. Also there are other qualities that are very important too. Some smart people are terrible in other ways and lots of smart people do poorly in life.

But someone said "who got that one wrong? " I just sat in the back quietly. Ofc the person in front of me just HAD to be nosy and they looked at my screen and said very loudly "she did! " and everyone looked at me laughing and I felt terrible. Like big deal I got one wrong. Cmon ppl it was a fun TRVIA game. I can't be this awesome all the time yknow.

There are people with photographic/Eidetic/../ memories remembering every intricate detail they have done/said/learned/thought/internalised/acted/what everyone else has said.. and more. People who innately comprehend material the level of Masters with confirmation from students or teachers that it is a difficult subject to master let alone by a glance look into it and know more than the teacher has been taught. My moms cousin is an alcoholic he lives in his apartment covered with books, his bed has sanked in stolen/bought books he might or might not be intelligent but for someone like him to exist comparable to me who barerly reads the amount he does per day, it's hard to think I'm even slightly intelligent instead dumb stupid pathetic loser - that's literally what I am every day

8 and 9 are exactly how my life is. It’s weird how you can over do work and still be “lazy.” I can’t really agree with 7 because I never talk about my feelings, I was raised to know that it is only for bad people, so nobody can really understand me or not if I don’t give them anything to understand. For 10, luckily where I live finding a bully is like finding a four leaf clover. They’re very rare.

    • @Pikachu-nj3cx
      @Pikachu-nj3cx ปีที่แล้ว

I don't express my feelings either but there is a sense in people whether how the person is feeling. I have that feeling but as no one really likes me alot and I get bullied half the time on school, I can't help anyone. But then there is this sense. I agree with you.

After seventy years that included hundreds of dreadfully painful days, trying my best to "fit in and enjoy" family gatherings (holidays being the worst), Covid, in all it's forms, has given me the one impenetrable excuse, with absolutely no guilt or judgement, to say "no" and stay home. Yes, I'm a Mensan.

One of my professors once said: smart people struggle with motivation/procrastination because they never had to struggle much initially. Unlike people who have to learn how to overcome struggles, we are not taught how when life eventually gets hard. It can be especially hard to ask for help when people see you, or you perceive yourself, as the smart one who should have the answers.

Ahhh, I've heard this a lot, and I never really believed it until maybe two years ago. It's begun to resonate with my current situation in school, because everything has been increasing in difficulty and I've always expected myself to be able to accomplish what I need to. It's been quite taxing struggling to build up motivation and incentive that I really did take for granted a while back. Your professor speaks an honest truth, and I hope my school takes note of this and begins to reach out more to the students whose performance has been changing because of their own internal struggles and expectations.

I grew up having to take care of myself, because at age 4 my parents got divorced and were constantly working.

I was labeled as “gifted” in school and have an IQ of at least 149, which was the lowest I was tested. It started after I would frequently get in trouble at school for interrupting lessons too much combined with often not paying attention. It wasn’t so bad until high school where I become much more intently focused on my social shortcomings. I became obsessed over finding friends I could form close bonds with, but failed to seem to fit in to connect with anyone in a genuine way. I could get along with anyone by mimicking social norms, but always felt lonely. Plagued by that as well as an obsession of the meaning of life I became hopeless. I didn’t know it at the time but I had a major depressive disorder that wasn’t diagnosed until my adulthood as well as social anxiety. What made things so much worse is that during this time of existential rumination I stopped putting any effort in school above the minimum required to not fail classes. My parents, which alway though me so smart, responded with unkind words, restrictions, and other behavior that made me just reject life entirely. I developed a drug habit as they had such a profound effect in bringing back my motivation which only alienated me more from my family.
Life as an adult work has been trying as well. I pursued early childhood education and work with parents under the principles that would have helped me as a child. I am successful but constantly find friction with co-workers over my obsessive and over analytical nature. While they simply want to maintain the job status quo and keep the same effectiveness over time to lower job difficulty, I only want to make constant improvements and always strive to create even more work than is necessary. I chase a perfection (perfection that is unattainable, I know) but this frustrates my employers and coworkers. My life hasn’t improved much but I can cope much better than in my adolescence. I am of course a night owl as well and don’t seem to tire but I don’t find this aspect of my personality that trying.
I hope to continue to help parents to approach their children with a mindset of nurturing. More than anything we need to know we are loved no matter the results of our tests or whether we go to a high level university. Our personality and effort need be celebrated while avoiding labels such as “smart” or “talented”, which can be a burden one feels for life.

They act like its a given, and it does not feel goooood. I get so anxious when I take tests and my heart drops every time they signal progress reports or (god forbid) report cards coming out. I’ve been drilled with this message that I’ll never get into a good college if my grades arent always on top, and I feel so much pressure because my parents are basically relying on my grades to get scholarships to pay for tuition- they’re expectant, and I’m afraid of what will happen if I *cant* get any financial aid, and I dont want to discuss that with them because they might get angry and become inquisitive as to why I would need to rely on anything other than my grades.
This quarantine has also made my sister do a lot worse in her studies, and seeing my parents get so angry and disappointed in *her* makes *me* terrified to see my grades drop also. Nowadays, waking up to “attend” school doesnt feel the same, and only brings foul emotions, and reminders of how I could spiral downwards like my sister did. And i used that to help my students after class if they wanted the help. I love being able to teach others. I find it satisfying, especially when they really want to learn and the regular class hours ain't doing them a lot of good. I one day spent about half an hour breaking down one technique for a guy. And how i showed it to him worked for him. It clicked for him. Knowing that, i was able to help him easily grasp the material. All my students eventually graduated to becoming coworkers. We could say that I "was" smart.
Back in my childhood (including middle school period) I was always stressed and anxious going to school. Even though I had really high marks, and it satisfied me, this happiness was too little compared to what I had gone through everytime (FYI: I was almost always suffering from fatigue, mostly because I'm introverted and y'know...) on top of that, I had really high expectations from my parents, which destroyed me psychologically because they always checked on me.
I didn't know what I really wanted, until the first year of high school
I finally knew that I wanted peace, that's why I stopped being the "smartest one" and I can't be prouder to say that. My parents for some miracle stopped to analyze what I did everytime so I was as fresh as ice: I went to school happily almost everyday (except tests but that's obvious, nothing wrong here 😂) and I mainly focused on tighting some friendships (even with teachers) and aimed at becoming a better person, that's when I was finally proud of myself. Yeah, I wasn't the smartest, but I was an educated and happy fella, probably the best feeling I ever felt (and still feel today).
I'm still in high school, fourth year, still have to fight some obstacles, but I feel like nothing can stop me.
I felt like sharing this here so there you go, it also made me feel better somehow

Exactly! I was identified as a gifted student in elementary school, still am, and people always expect me to do the best. Like, I lost so much just because I am “gifted”. I’m depressed, have anxiety, and have no friends I can relate to all because I was isolated from my peers since a young age. I have terrible social skills, no motivation for anything and procrastinate everything. Then, everyone says that I’m lucky because I’m smart. I’m not lucky, people, okay? I just want to be normal, which I can’t be because I have no other identity apart from being “smart”.

That interesting, because there’s a quote in the Qur’an says something along the lines of” The intelligent people are the most afraid of god” because there intelligence makes them aware and see how vast and complex the world we live in is, and it also makes them realize just how limited we are as human beings.
Though, I feel like the sadness mentioned in the quote above is a result of one not accepting these limitations and focusing on what we don’t know and can’t do, rather than what we do have and can do. Reminding ourselves of what we do have no matter how little, makes us feel more grateful, content with life and is a good way to happiness. and the whole “seeing the cup half full” is a very underrated message, imho.

It doesn't have to be finding nerdy people. I have a 1000 friends but hardly a handful who i get excited to talk to regarding anything and be returned the same passion. It's rare you find a soul who's intelligent and also not cocky and arrogant. You end up being lonely all your life. Not able to share what you have and reciprocated. I had and still have problems with how much I talk. I never thought of it as being linked to my mental capabilities. That enlightens a few things. Thanks for this video.

When I was a kid, one teacher told my mom I was gifted and overskilled.... from this day on I've never had peace, the expectations were way to high on me, since I'm the oldest daughter. It caused me a lot of stress, a lot of disapointness when I got bad marks and a lot of pressure. Nowadays I'm really good at everything I do, but I have OCD and overstress that always conducts me to a burn-out times to times.

I get u, they said the exact same thing, but instead of feeling pressure from being the oldest, I constantly live in my siblings' shadow ( me being the youngest ) , causing me to have a burn out at least once a month and lots of stress

@@neonctx yeh but so do the dumb people who think they are smart .... Hmm. It's a bit of a twist if you think about it. I find the patience part galling. As the saying goes stupidity is the only disease other people have to suffer from.

When teachers started telling my parents I'm smart and overskilled, i started to feel stressed and gave up on trying :). Now I'm not good at anything other than my brain overthinking me into depression every single day :)

To understand more about someone you label as smart, (i think everyone is smart tho).. being smart is not always happy thing, so yeah, i think there's nothing to get jealous..

I’ve always had issues with the saying “knowledge is power” because, although it is true in a way, it makes people forget it is also an incredible struggle.
