"One woman show here!" sorry not sorry!....lol. I love how you always leave us hanging for more. Now you know we are super curious what this cake will look when finished. I have to learn the art of cliffhangers like you!
Mary you are simply excellent in getting the top of your cake soo level. I don’t know if my buttercream is too thick or if I’m not using the right spatula but, I’m so frustrated that I just cannot get my top smooth or straight. This time I heard you say not to press down hard and maybe that is what I’m doing. Is your buttercream on the softer side when you ice your cakes?
Putting the cakes in the freezer briefly helps because it firm's up the frosting a little as you are working with it, but you might need to move a little faster. I always suggest multiple thinner coats with chilling in between. Seems like a pain, but it is better then fighting with the buttercrram and overworking it. Also helps to keep the sharp corners.
How thick does the icing end up? It looks like there is so much on the cake. I've been trying to apply it as thinly as possible because most of my family and extended family aren't icing fans.
Honestly, I just use however much is needed to get the cleanest look. So they may all be a little different. Square cakes are always going to need more for the corners.
BY FAR the best video I have seen for this. Thank you 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾

th-cam.com/video/X0MioKuiELk/w-d-xo.html This is a whole tutorial about my buttercream:) It is an American Buttercream.
What size are the cake pans?

Can you do this with whipped cream
I wouldn't because it would be hard to get the sharp corners and it needs to solidify to be able to work with it.
