  • Today, we'll take a look at a bigger-than-usual front flipper from Ray Laconico and Artisan Cutlery, the $266 (but actually $200) Artisan Centauri.

    So, it looks like the price they had listed was a fake price, and the real price is $200. That’s a lot better, for sure!

    • @faretheewell3711
      @faretheewell3711 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah if you look at all prices on Artisans website they are all like that kind of like benchmades site etc.

      There is now a smaller, 3 inch version, as well as liner lock versions of both the large and small at half the price. The liner lock versions are particularly strong in value because they use the same blade steel as the frame lock versions, but they are as dirty out of the box as this one was.

    I got the s35vn version and am blown away at how good this knife is. Aesthetically it's a beauty.
    Snaps right open with the front flipper and drops freely when closing. Gorgeous grind and glistening carbon fiber. It came very sharp, nice and thin behind the edge with an even grind. Perfect centering. Micro milled titanium and milled clip screwed in from the inside giving it a very clean look.
    The whole knife is very thin but still has a good purchase, the thumb jimping is just right, not too sharp.
    I feel like this is the best $200 I've spent on a knife. If you're thinking about getting one, just do it! You will not regret it.

    Thank you so much for the review Nick. You will be seeing the Centauri listed with a pricepoint closer to $200 with most of our major retailers, however the prices listed on our website are the MSRP, hence the $266 pricetag.

    Really like this design, with the lowered edge profile and nuanced belly. Reminds me a little of the Schwartz Perpetua. I think I'll wait for the small but this would make a good portable food-prepper.
    *Update--* I've been carrying the small in Damascus & CF (after returning the small in green micarta with a bad lock) and am quite pleased with it's slim & light dimensions, ease of flipping (mine is smooth with no grit), unusually thin blade stock, functional clip, pretty CF. The blade is probably too thin and tippy to be a good overall daily carry, but it is a great little cutter. $179.

    I'm really excited to see Laconico do something a little different; I can only stand so many gray titanium flippers with a drop point blade. This knife in particular just so perfectly matches my taste too: perfect size, perfect blade shape, nice looking CF scale, and an interesting deployment method. Though even at $200 it still feels like a bit much...

    Re: price, some details (clip, texture) really add up, and there might be some extra money tied up in distribution by the looks of things. It's actually only a little bit more than Ray's EZE, so the real question is how some collabs (like Ray's Gemini/Yorkie) get made for so cheap.

    I'm not sure why, but I'm just not a fan of knives that don't have scales on both side of the handle. For instance my Spyderco Calypso Jr. from 20 years ago has smooth Micarta handles that are just a pleasure to hold. Tactile can be aesthetic, ya know.

    File off the sharp corners myself? For a knife that sells for $2.66, I wouldn’t mind doing that. For a $26.60 knife, I’d consider it. But when they want $266 for a knife, they’d darn well better finish making the dadgummed thing before it leaves the factory.
