    Looks like they gave you one of the older versions. The model currently available on Drop has relief cuts for the thumb studs as well as an ostensibly improved clip.

      I wonder why they changed the name from Massdrop to simply Drop? Massdrop had a cool sound to it but Drop just sounds dumb.

      Nick Shabazz I have one of the first batch ones and it came very very rough. I had to take it apart and clean up all the matting surfaces to even get it to fire reliably. It took hundreds of deployments to get it smooth but now it’s my smoothest axis lock. Also I had to replace my clip with a titanium one because it caught on something while I was walking and broke.

    my first one broke an omega spring about 3 months in (and i've owned a mini grip for years without this issue). i wrote millit asking for a replacement spring and never even got a response; i wrote drop asking for the same and they told me they could only replace the entire knife. the replacement they sent had rust spotting on the blade out of the box. when i complained to drop again they told me no more replacements were available. i tried to put the blade from my original knife into the handle of the replacement, and both were completely slathered in red loctite and unable to be disassembled. the design had so much potential, but my experience with both companies involved was pretty uniformly terrible.

    This looks awesome! The ultimate hybrid of a CRK Insingo blade, a Benchmade lock, and a handle that will readily accept aftermarket scales. Sounds like an all around win to me. I just wish the liners were recessed and not flush to make it look a little cleaner. If they could make a version with a dark acid stonewash I would love that.

    Mine came last week and was totally non-functional out of the box. Lock was not engaging at all and very stiff action despite having blade play. G10 finishing was a bit rough as well along the edges. So I tore it down and once I got the pivot screw out (required a punch as it felt press fit in the liner) the first thing I saw right away was the omega springs were not installed correctly, hence the locking issue. The blade washers were also bone dry. So I cleaned up the scales, installed the omega springs correctly, and properly lubricated the washers. Once back together and giving it some break in time, it is now a good knife with smooth action, nice centering, and solid lock up.

    Yea gods...THIS knife. Besides the six months delayed shipping (long before the days that the Viral Endless Spring Break of 2020 made delays common), this was the worsr assembled knife I had every been sent, including cheap, no-name Chinese junkers. One of the spacers had stripped threads, the hardware was all torqued down out of balance, and the blade so tight I could barely get it opened. When I did, it was so off-center that it clipped a liner; further inspection showed that the pivot iteslf, i.e., the cylindrical metal piece the blade rotated around with threaded openings on both sides for the pivot screws, had been bent by a pair of pliers. You could clearly the lines from the pliers, which the person who assembled the knife had used to squeeze down so hard on the small piece that it collapsed the metal a little, making it no longer perfectly round.
    I probably should have sent it back right there, but I'm a masochist who likes projects, so I mostly fixed it with files and some sandpaper. And of course, even though it wasn't technically broken, there was that pocket clip. That awful, awful pocket clip. I was pleased to hear Millit had made replacements, and titanium no less, and excitedly went to their website. I wasn't expecting them to be free, but they cost 30 bucks for a blue anodized titanium version of...exactly the same design! I still bought one because without it the knife was almost useless. But despite the good things ive heard about them, i don't thibk a $500 Millit mid-tech will be on my shopping list any time soon.

    The prototype had more prominent thumb studs that got reduced for the production run. Epic Snuggle Bunny mentions this in his preview. The smaller studs interfere less with carrying and use. Or not. The broad range of perceptions in the knife community is always interesting.
    The clip isn't even spring steel but fortunately it is compatible with many Kizer and Kershaw and other clips. My Kershaw Barge lives in a tool box so its clip carries my Perpetua which has endured much hard use.

    I missed out on the first run, but I'm kinda glad that I did. I can't confirm but I read, heard, saw, that they made improvements on subsequent runs of the knife. I just ordered on the other day finally. I had forgot about it until I saw one on SliceyDiceys live stream. Checked the site out and they had them in stock ready to order. So I grabbed one up while they had them. The design seems very appealing to me and from what everyone has said, overall its a nice knife at a decent price point. I see a lot of people saying its ugly or boring, well I happen to like plain and simple designs like this. It's great that there is such a humongous variety of designs out there to choose from. I almost never like the next "hot fad" knife that comes out. I still think my delica or mini grips are the best looking knives I own. Anyways, To each their own, good video Nick.

    • @CNYKnifeNerd
      @CNYKnifeNerd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nitro V is one of those steels that WAY outperforms its "on paper" specs. It's also highly variable based on HRC. Once you get into the 61+ range, it outperforms nearly every steel in a similar price range.
      Definitely worth picking up an affordable example, to experience it, and at $100 this knife is a pretty great example.
      That being said, the specs state, i believe, 57-59 HRC which would be really underwhelming and nowhere near the potential of Nitro V. My experience with my example leads me to believe its definitely higher than 59 HRC, so take all that with a grain of salt.

    It is lighter (no steel liners) same blade length.
    Has a MUCH better clip
    If this didn't have steel liners and they offered it in Ti or CF as well as G-10 and possibly Micarta with a deeper carry better designed clip it would be great at $150 ish
    Right now they're selling the "improved " version for $100 which doesn't seem bad.

    As they fixed your two ugly issues with the second gen (no more perpetua-ly rebending the clip), my main concern with this knife would be getting new omega springs when they inevitably fail. I'll put up with it from Benchmade because I can always send in the knife for new springs. However, (Mass)drop isn't renowned for its customer servie and there is no telling how long Millit is going to continue support for this model.
    With the second gen they also offer a new color, so you can chose between grey and greenish-grey. Hurray for choice. I'd imagine the grey scales would dye nicely though.

    • @sqeeye3102
      @sqeeye3102 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this was a year ago but I would just like to add something incase it helps you or anyone else. I had a spring break on my 940-2 and didn't want to wait another 7-8 weeks for Benchmade to make it right so I just went on amazon and bought a pair of springs. They were a little too stiff but it was easy to tweak and they honestly look like higher quality springs anyway. Later I got a Hogue Deka which also uses omega springs but they are made by Wolff (they manufacture springs for firearms) so it might be possible to contact either of those companies quicker than Massdrop, or even Benchmade for that matter.

    • @dm3639
      @dm3639 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good info! Sadly, Drop (formerly massdrop) has gotten out of the knife market entirely, so aftermarket is probably the only option now.
      I've had enough failures on Omega springs that it has soured me on the axis lock design. I only own two knives with the lock and I've had three failures. It's kept me from buying knives (the perpetua and the hogue rsk specifically).
      I may give the hogue design a try to see if the problem is just Benchmade's springs, but it probably won't be soon.

    • @sqeeye3102
      @sqeeye3102 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dm3639 I'm sorry to hear that but I completely understand. My omega failure was my first Benchmade experience and within a couple months so I'm on the same page. That being said, I loved my Hogue Deka so much that I bought a second one in wharncliffe and just ordered a mini-RSK due to my experience with both. I think if anyone can do it right it would be Wolff.
      I can't blame you for being skeptical though. Spyderco looked like they did a really good transitional variant with the Manix but I can't say personally. I think the irony is that Benchmade already improved their design with the Anthem, but it's $450 and discontinued. So it seems they just don't really care.

    • @dm3639
      @dm3639 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love the ball bearing lock, especially the covered version in the manix 2 (the exposed ball in the dodo and other models is harder for me to use with gloves on). I wish Spyderco would use it in more designs. I've used my manix heavily for years with no issues. I was interested to try the similar spring design of the anthem, but I'm just not willing to pay the price premium for an integral. It's too bad Benchmade let that variant die with the anthem.
      You've given me a reason to reconsider a hogue, which I appreciate. I like to support domestic manufacturing when I can, so another option would be good.

    Haven't watched this review yet but this is one knife I'd recommend skipping. Mine has blade play and a clip that is bent out just from simple carrying and light use.

    There is a second generation of this knife. Thumb stud and clip issues have been resolved. The pivot was changed as well. I don't think it's fair to review the original version at this point.

    So glad to see Massdrop finally selling knives that are made by full grown adults who earn a real salary for their work. Instead of being made in a sweat shop in China by children. I like the blade shape but don't care for the blade finish or the clip.

      They also have the Mordax made by ProTech. Do you happen to have any evidence that WE has poor labor practices? I assume it takes relatively skilled workers to manufacture high end blades.

      @@SANDALxCORE I don't criticize anyone for spending their money how they want. I only speak for myself that i cannot in good conscious buy a knife made in China. Yes, I know, my TV, my computer, and phone, etc. are all made in China or has Chinese parts. I also know that there are industries that China has monopolized through unfair labor and trade practices, and that their communist government has for generations been guilty of inhumane human rights violations. The fact is, if I want any electronic device, I have to purchase something with Chinese parts. I know that General Motors is in the process of making cars in China to be transported back to the USA for purchase. If the trend continues, China will have completely destroyed all competition on every single item that is manufactured everywhere. This is the same country that lied to the world about the Covid 19 virus. This is the same country that murdered it's students for asking for a change in the human rights laws. I am sure WE knives makes excellent quality knives, but at least part their profits goes to a government that is a big problem for both our country and the world. Do I have any evidence that WE knives has poor labor practices? The answer is no. Whether they do or not, I know that there is a chance that they might, or they might not. I also know that both Chinese businesses and the government that controls those businesses has a long, long history of not telling the truth. BTW, I do choose to buy knives and other items from countries that are our allies, including Germany, South Korea, Italy, Japan, and Taiwan, so I'm not a "USA only" type of person. Also Taiwan, our ally, is a country that China still refuses to accept as a Country in it's own right. Once again, spend your money where you like. I myself see China as, if not an enemy, then at least a country I have huge issues with. I really believe the Covid 19 virus, should make the USA and the rest of the world re examine, and ask the question, "Who are and who are not our friends".

    The lack of imagination with these knife makers is disturbing , with the exception of Spyderco I see nothing but a series of rip offs with one or two very minor changes this is really an old new knife and I dont get why they even bother making it . To say they are lazy and a plain disappointment is a serious understatement.
