  • Today, we're going to talk about a very interesting, and very effortful, knife from Gerber Gear, the US-Made Sedulo.

    Really, the Sedulo is more of a Griptilian alternative, rather than the Bugout. Nice job Nick! BTW, we are calling all of this lock style a "Crossbar Lock" to avoid confusion with every company trying to come up with their own proprietary names for it -DCA

      Good term!

      @Ice_Berg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Is there any plans to change the advanced search options on KnifeCenter to condense all the different trademarked names into one "crossbar lock" filter?
      There's been multiple times lately I'm trying to browse all the new knives with this sort of lock and every knife retailer I've seen lists them separately. I end up having to guess which names sound the most like a crossbar lock because I can never remember every trademark and you can only really see one brand at a time which makes it tedious to browse through them or compare them.

    I'll be honest, that pivot system is genius for the lock style.

    • @theknifeconnection9571

      Probably. Unless some how the brass wears fast or it somehow releases from the blade

    • @Olumin37
      @Olumin37 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@theknifeconnection9571 Its a press fit, its certainly conceivable that it could potentially come loose, however its very unlikely with reasonable use. By the color of it, it seems to be a brass alloy, rather then bronze. This means it is softer and will technically wear quicker, but I cant see that becoming a problem in a pocket knife.

    • @priority2
      @priority2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So, you don’t think the pivot itself won’t wear away the pivot hole? I think it might. Soft phosphor bronze or brass? Maybe the brass is hardened like on Henry rifles?

    • @theknifeconnection9571
      @theknifeconnection9571 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@priority2 honestly aslong as there's some oil in there. And the tolerances are on point (who knows with Gerber). If anything all it will do is polish the inside of the brass. I'm guessing it's not pure brass. It may be slightly hardened. But even if it's not I don't see it becoming an issue with Edc use in less then 10 20 years. Unless sand constantly gets into it

    The fact that I’m seeing people saying it’s copying multiple completely different designs shows that it’s not trying to be any one of those designs. Ive seen people claim it’s a bugout copy, a freek copy, and a griptilian copy. All very different knives. As far as the axis lock. Wasn’t benchmades invention, and other company’s are using it as well, so giving crap to one brand because of their past is pretty petty. Good effort shown from a brand that has a rough past, and a welcome sight.

    • @Heizenberg32
      @Heizenberg32 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It was Benchmade's invention. The patent is just expired now, so it's a free for all.

    • @Cry42
      @Cry42 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean, the other way of looking at it is that has Benchmade’s aesthetic; if it has a butterfly logo on it instead, nobody would question it being a Benchmade design.

      @@sethR69S I stand corrected. I did consider that possibility as I wrote my comment, but didn't put it in the effort to look it up. Although, what I said was still true - in the most technical, hair splitting, sense. After Benchmade bought it, it was "their invention". Even though they weren't the ones who invented it. It always really bothers me when I lose a knife. Even one from Wal Mart. Also... why does everyone give Gerber such a hard time about their economy grade knives? Most people think a knife.. is a knife. That a $100 knife is just as good as a $20 knife. I run into these people all the time. Showing off their gas station zombie killer to me at work with cringe worthy pride. Gerber makes expensive and well made USA made knives with high end steels. Wal Mart and other retail stores like Target do not stock expensive Gerbers. It's the consumer's fault for not pursuing their high end stuff if that's what they want. Benchmade started down the budget knife route and quickly decided they only wanted to make $150 knives or greater. Casio offers G-Shocks at $50 but you can get an $800 G-Shock too. I can't find a Mr.G at Wally world yet. Does that mean that Casio as a brand is fading out?

They're backed with a really flexible polyester instead of paper, so they hold up really well and can be rolled/formed around a small tool to get those hard to reach spots. But I find it funny is because it took me voiding my bugouts warranty to find out the last .24 inches of the blade WAS BENT/CURVED! I love American made and always will. But just like how "chinese" isn't synonymous with "bad", American isn't synonymous with "good". I understand my issue is an obvious anomaly, I'm sure the DLC is the same. I got this knife as soon as it came out. It has found a permanent home in my pocket. I absolutely love it over my benchmade super freek, and my gerber fastball, even my civivi elementum. That being said, the sharpening angles are really weird. But that's almost a gerber trademark at this point. And not a big fan of the handles, material or textures. But for some reason, I keep going back to this knife and love using it.

    I want to see Gerber make a comeback but after seeing how bad the QC was on Zach's (from Zach's Stuff) custom Sedulo and the way they still haven't returned a call to him, it looks like they might not have changed. Which is unfortunate bcuz the Sedulo had a chance to be a game changer for them. Regardless, great video once again Batman aka Nick.

But God damn I feel like a proud father watching Gerber show us what it can do 👍

    Rooting for them, but not letting them off the hook is a very reasonable way to approach Gerber. They have a good chunk of time to make up for that they spent releasing some less than ideal products. I may pick this one up though!

    Random questions:
    1. At what point is a steel considered one that has high Vanadium content?
    2. Is it OK to sharpen with Silicon Carbide (ex. auto sandpaper) on a knife with high Vanadium content?
    Thank you for your help!

    Nick, I finally created a channel just to comment here. I think you are letting a brand name skew the review. Happened a couple times and I almost commented on that AG Russell Lighting Bug for the same reason. You said a CRKT that you had to file down was a good knife... But roast others for slightly off centered blades...
    Hope you accept the observation... This Gerber looks great!

    • @EvilTwinRC51

    • @bfrazer4126
      @bfrazer4126 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, not the tightness of the fit necessarily, in that I don't think its going to come out, but might it tilt slightly? I don't know. It is only brass so maybe.
      Plus bearings/bushings should should always be used in pairs.
      Still, it is something new. Hopefully that's something they cover under a reasonable warranty.

    The rights design choice is super dump. Spyderco makes their smooth surface for the clip on both sides, for example the para 3lw and the Urban. And the compression lock isn't even ambidextrous although you get used to it dang fast. So Gerber stack up your game. I mean the strongarm has a fully ambidextrous sheath for example. I love that one.

    I got one of the first wave preorders on the Sedulo. The knife came so stiff and gritty with bevels so far off that it should have been embarrassing for anyone QCing these things. For my first “small batch U.S. made Gerber” it was very disappointing. I imagine I would have liked it if I had won the QC lottery on mine, but as is I sent it along it’s way.

    Great looking knife from gerber. But whoever they have doing the sharpening over there needs some practice. I looked at several fastballs the other day and they had the same issues. Uneven sharpening on all of them. Not a deal breaker if they are easily fixed. But the ones I looked at where gonna need some serious work to be made right.

    Been watching the vids for a while and like them. Do you ever review knifes made in France? I have recently explored websites for manufacturers making knives there and am enthralled by many of the designs. Many are too expensive for my budget and a lot of those are strictly for collectors. But, there are some EDC examples. Would certainly like to know an expert opinion of some French made representative examples. Best wishes from Washington State.
