No offense to jaby and Achara but to be honest, Andrew has got a really good eye for films when he clearly identified Charlie the actor when he was killed in the video with snakes as he was the one who spit on Vikram in the beginning of the film. It is not easy to identify side actors especially when watching a completely different regional films. Also he made a good point about the Social message that vikram was delivering in the arena which perfectly reflected the sentiments of us when we watched this movie. Looking forward to more of Andrew's watch along's.

Shankar was the director who redefined the term "Commercial cinema" during the 90s and 2Ks. Everything he done during that time was pathbreaking and extremely innovative for Indian commercial cinema. He literally created a new genre called "Message movie" which he remained a king where other directors failed miserably. His songs have more story and screenplay than any commercial movie made that time(my favourite are "Poovukul" from jeans and "Athiradi" from shivaji) And also he managed to dig the best music out of ARR(first one was always Mani Ratnam).

Regarding the freezing and flying effect in martial art fight scene, there were 100 trained martial artists were used. Also 100+ cameras used to capture 270 degree angle. The flying effect was achieved by pulling the people through ropes up. A truck stationed outside the building would pull all people together on director’s command. The inexperienced truck driver moved bit quickly and around 23 fighters were injured as few of them hit the ceiling. The director was so upset and cried like a baby due to this mishap as narrated by one of the fight master silva. The fight choreography is done by Peter Heins. This is still one of the best action scene shot in Indian cinema.

  • @antonythesaint
    @antonythesaint ปีที่แล้ว +103

We were shooting for an important fight sequence which involved over 150 stuntmen. There was a scene in which almost 70-75 of them would fly up after getting hit. For this scene, we tied up all of them using ropes and we had to have them pulled up all at once. Since pulling each person would take up to 4-5 people, Peter Hein master had planned to tie all the ropes to a lorry outside the stadium in which we shot.
Unfortunately, because the lorry driver wasn't a stunt coordinator, he moved the lorry before the director said action, and when most of them were unprepared. This caused a major accident, where all of them flew up in the air, with no support and hit the top and fell to the ground. There was a bloodbath at the location, with most of the boys seriously injured and blood flowing out of their legs and hands. One of them suffered fits, while another was unconscious and his eyes were bleeding.
We were all alert, so we rushed them all to the hospital, and thankfully everyone survived. But that day, Shankar sir was extremely depressed and was crying so much, like a little child. It was very disheartening to see that.

Fun fact about cinematographer, vfx supervisors, production designer, editor, and story writer who are part of anniya film making. Their two cinematographer for this film. The first cinematographer guy ran away from the middle of the film making. The second cinematographer is done film like barfi, goliyan ki raasleela ram leela, Tamasha, Kaatru veliyadai, sanju, jagga jasoos and now pooniyan selvan. These are the film where jaby enjoyed the cinematography so much. He gave very praising review. This cinematographer came long away where he is now. 2nd. Both the vfx supervisors and production designers from this film played important role making film like rrr, bahuballi 1 and 2. Enthiran and 2.0. So these guys also changed the landscape of indian cinema. Screen play writer for this sujatha. This screen play writer is number one go to for Shankar. He also changed tamil cinema. Like s.s rajamouli has his father v.vijayendra prasad who is screenwriter for bajrangi bhaijaan, bahubaali 1 and 2, mersal, rrr, and now bollywood cashing in their money for to write the screen play for upcoming films in hindi. He also help indian cinema to the next level. Same goes to sujatha who made a amazing story for anniyan which everyone like. Lol the editor in this film is the bad one we have in tamil cinema after 2000. He loves hyper editing. He made more grounded editing before 2000. He edited film like sigham, agan, sammy 2, singam 2 and etc not grounded film. More like a serial editing we see in hindi serial. Lastly, shankar has been master class director in the last three decades for tamil cinema. Also impacted pan indian cinema and opened door for hindi audiences to watch south film. That why aprashite was praised until now. Lastly. S.s rajamouli. It not pan india anymore. It pan world. He took indian cinema to world cinema. But we have to give credit to production designers sabu Cyril and vfx supervisors srinivas mohan who started from local and regional to pan india film to pan world film. Without these guy maybe we would of not achieved who we are today as indian cinema. They made huge impact both in bollywood and south indian cinema.

Seeing Andrew talk so much in the movie review reminds you of the friend we all have seen. The one who seems to have been sleeping through all the classes and lectures in college. Seems like he's not listening to any classes. But cometh the exam day, has answered all the questions and got good grades 😅
Were you listening the whole time dude? Thought we were together in not listening 😅😛😂
    Nice observations Andrew.

There are certain scenes in the movie which are unexplainable and I've noticed when westerners watch those scenes, they call is "movie magic". To an Indian eye, most of us grew up watching movies like these which had over-the-top moments/action scenes and it was very normal for us and we just let it pass.
Jaby has been reacting to Indian content for years now and understands each era of growth of Indian cinema but I'm glad even Andrew, being new to Indian cinema, was more accepting of these movie magic scenes.
Great reaction and review guys ❤️.

Did you guys notice the guy at the end, who was thrown out the train, he was the same electric maintenance guy in the flashback, Ambi's father calls to inform about the broken electric wire, but the same drunk guy, just left the telephone hanging. So he was one of the reasons Ambi's sister died.
Ambi knows that he is the same guy, because cases were filled by his father against all those people who didn't do their job, which resulted in his daughters death.
If you also notice the way Ambi was standing near the train door casually with one of his legs lifted up, that wasn't Ambi. Ambi would never stand near an open train door because it's against the rules. It was Remo standing there. If it was Ambi, he would've left really shy when Nandini hugged him in public.
So basically the guy who came out of the Mental Hospital was Remo and Anniyan merged together, acting as Ambi.

So I'm a tamil person born in Canada, and this movie was apart of my childhood, I usually watched it when I got bored of rewatching the Raimi trilogy. Although slightly dated , with the comedy relying alot on Tamil references and norms, it's still a really powerful story IMO. There are tons of great Tamil movies to react to but one of the best have to be "I", also Vikram, but it's alot more modern so I think it won't be as jarring in terms of tone. The visuals are great, and all the songs actually work in with the plot. Would definitely give it a watch. Loved the reaction ❤️

The Hindi version flopped but the Tamil version was a hit since Vikram killed the role of the main lead role.
